2 Accidents can happen anywhere, especially at crowded places like schools. It is our collective responsibility therefore, to be alert and cautious at all times. Also, always talk to your parents and teachers about situations that may be of concern to you. Here are a few tips to make your time at school safer.

If you take a school bus or van to the school, take a look at the following safety instructions and inform your friends about them. fo Even if someone from home drops you to school be sure to follow E tthe road safety rules given below. When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing. Do not stray onto the street, alleys or private property. Line up away from the street or road as the bus approaches. Wait until the bus has stopped before approaching it. Use the handrail when boarding. Don’t speak loudly or make loud noises that could distract the driver. Stay in your seat.

While at school, be on the lookout for danger or anything that may be out of the ordinary, such as a support staff member hanging around the kids too much or an area that might not be too safe. Be sure to report any unusual activity that you see within the school premises. Do not go wandering around the school alone. Do not go to secluded areas. Report any bullying that you witness in the playground to the school authorities immediately.

Don’t put your head, arms or hands out the window. Keep aisles clear of books and bags. Get your belongings together before reaching your stop. Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat.

Be careful in the science lab; do not touch any equipment unless your teacher asks you to. Do not goof around in sensitive areas like the science lab or go near the school pool. Ask your teachers about basic school safety and emergency protocols. Follow all the procedures that are taught during your school safety drill. If you are put into a pressure situation that you are not comfortable with, such as a dare from a friend, try talking yourself out of it, or better yet walk away.

Hi-light

Be careful during the time you spend on the road, between home and school. Do not make after school plans without informing your parents. Also, make it a habit to inform your parents the moment you get home so they do not worry about you. If you are waiting for your car or school bus once the school day is over do not walk out on the street. for your car or school wan within the school premises, but do not wander off, stay within in the range of the school gate. If you notice anyone suspicious hanging out near the school gate, a few days in a row, let the school authorities know. If you spot any unusual activity outside the school, do not go to investigate, inform the school staff about it. Discuss a backup plan with your family in case of emergencies when they cannot pick you up from school. Never walk while texting or talking on the phone. Never cross the street while using an electronic device. Do not walk with headphones on. Be aware of your surroundings. Always walk on the sidewalk if one is available. If you must walk on the street, make sure to face oncoming traffic. Look left, right and then left again before crossing the street. Cross only at crosswalks. Do not stray from your route or take shortcuts through abandoned places.

Bullying is serious business. If you or one of your friends is getting bullied, you should talk about it with elders. The closest available elder might be a teacher, so go and tell them what is happening. If, for some reason, they do not take action or try and make light of the situation, talk to your parents or elder siblings about it. Do not stop talking about it until someone takes notice. Bullying may not always come from other children; there are some cases where adults pressure you for information so discuss how to tackle those situations with your parents. Do not give out any information about yourself, your family or your school to any stranger without your parent’s consent. Discuss the amount of information you are allowed to share with people you meet and ways to evade questions that are personal or threaten your privacy.

Q: What is harder to catch the faster you run? A: Your breath

Fun Facts about dates The word ‘date’ comes from the Greek word daktylos, meaning finger. One cup of dates has about 400 calories, 27% of the recommended daily requirement of potassium and 48% of daily fiber needs.

Q: Why is tennis such a loud sport? A: The players raise a racquet

Q: Why did Tarzan spend so much time on the golf course? A: He was perfecting his swing

They also provide calcium, zinc, iron, copper, magnesium, calcium and other minerals that may help lower blood pressure, stroke risk and labor complications. Dates are rich in antioxidants known as polyphenols, which fight disease-causing free-radicals. Very few people are allergic to this fruit. Their low water and high sugar content gives them a shelf life of many months.

Q: Why did the ballerina quit? A: Because it was tu-tu hard

Q: What is an insect’s favourite sport? A: Cricket

Dates made nomadic life and trade possible in the very dry and hot regions of the Middle East and North Africa. Because the tree and its fruit have so many uses the date palm is known as the “tree of life” in the Middle East, and it’s the national symbol of Saudi Arabia and Israel.

? w o n k u o y Did The formidable blue marlin Blue marlins are among the largest, fastest and most recognisable fish in the world. Their cobalt blue and silvery white bodies and spear-shaped upper jaws make this big fish stand out in a big ocean. Female blue marlins can grow up to 14 feet (4.3 metres) in length and can weigh more than 1,985 pounds (900 kilogrammes)! This incredible predator lives a solitary life from the time it is born. The mother lays her eggs in the open water and they float along until hatching with no parental care. From then on, the fish spends most of its life alone, far from land, in the warm surface waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. They can swim long distances and will follow warm ocean currents for hundreds and even thousands of miles. Blue marlins usually feed at the surface where the water is warm, but they have been known to dive deep to feast on squid. To catch prey, blue marlins swim through dense schools of mackerel and tuna at full speed, slashing their upper jaw. They then go back to eat their stunned victims.

Real dreams It’s fair to say Marko Rojnic has accomplished an awful lot in his first three months of life — based on these incredible pictures, at least. From riding a unicorn and flying a plane to driving a car to becoming the king of clubs, the super cute baby has already had plenty of adventures. And, incredibly, he managed them all without leaving his bed. It’s all down to the creative genius of his mum Marta Rojnic, who used bedsheets and towels to create the scenes, with socks and gloves providing the finer details. Marta said she decided to create the images after watching newborn Marko sleeping and wondering what he was dreaming about. She added, “On the basis of MarKo’s wiggles while he was dreaming, I visualised what he must be thinking about. Based on that I got some of our bed linens and constructed them into adventures about what I thought they would be. I will watch Marko before deciding what scene to make on our bed, so in all it takes about 15 minutes. But he wakes and it’s all done in a cosy atmosphere. All of Marko’s dreams are made of warm bedding, blankets, scarves, baby clothes and textile nappies on my bed. MIRROR.CO.UK

Aerial attack Keith Mead, 70, and his wife Ruth, 67, heard a loud bang and he rushed outside thinking their had been a car accident. But the couple were astonished when they saw a hole in their roof and found the seven-inch long chunk of ice on the lawn. The lump of frozen urine and faeces had fallen from a jet about 30,000ft overhead after being flushed from a toilet on the plane, they claim. Mr Mead, from Melksham, Wiltshire, bagged up the ice ball and put it in his freezer to show insurance assessors who visited that day. He said: “It was just as if someone had crashed into our house. “I looked up and there was a gaping hole where a large lump of ice had impacted the roof. Ruth added: “Thank goodness it didn’t hit anyone. It could have killed them.” Around 25 ice falls in the UK are reported to the Civil Aviation Authority each year. EXPRESS.CO.UK

When police in Bavaria, Germany, unveiled their new protective gear last week, some thought the helmets looked like the one worn by Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” films. But others saw a much less ominous similarity — comparing the new gear to Dark Helmet from Mel Brooks’ 1987 parody, Spaceballs. The new gear includes ceramic composite plates and a titanium helmet, which can supposedly withstand being shot by an assault rifle, RT.com reports. But it can’t protect them from ridicule. Already, images of the uniform are being used as fodder for a classic reddit Photoshop battle. And “Spaceballs” is just the beginning of the jokes: May the Schwartz be with you. HUFFINGTONPOST.COM

Return of the relic A Pakistani attorney has filed a court petition seeking the return of the famed Koh-i-Noor diamond Britain forced India to hand over in colonial times. Once the largest known diamond in the world, the 105-carat Koh-i-Noor is one of the Crown Jewels. It is set in a crown last worn by the late mother of Queen Elizabeth II during her coronation. Attorney Jawaid Iqbal Jafree filed the court petition naming Queen Elizabeth II as a respondent in the eastern city of Lahore. The application asks that Britain hand back the diamond, now on display in the Tower of London. India also has made regular requests for the jewel’s return, saying the diamond is an integral part of the country’s history and culture. Britain’s then colonial governor-general of India arranged for the huge diamond to be presented to Queen Victoria in 1850, during British colonial rule. India and Pakistan became two different countries in 1947 when they became independent of Britain. Jafree told Reuters that the Koh-i-Noor rightly belonged to Pakistan’s Punjab province and was forcibly and under duress taken by the British from the local ruler at the time. Now it should be returned to Pakistan. UK.REUTERS.COM

Lost By Mumtaz Mir “Mom, dad, are we there yet?” Sara asked. “Just in an hour, Sara,” her mother replied. Sara had been waiting desperately for the summer holidays when she could finally visit Dubai. Right now she was in the airplane and could not sit still. The excitement, the nerves were all making her jiggle and wiggle like jelly. The air hostesses had a hard time keeping her buckled up. Finally, the hour was over and the pilot announced that they were about to land. “Shhh” the airhostess said as Sarah let out an excited scream. People don’t even let kids be happy, thought Sara. The same day, her father had booked a tour called Desert Safari. Sara was excited again and started jumping on the bed. She had never been to a desert before and she had no idea what was going to be there. But she was happy. A taxi drove them to a far off place. A huge jeep with large tyres was waiting for them. The driver was an Arab. “Ahlan wa Sahlan,” Sara said to him and the driver laughed so loud that it felt like thunder. Sara decided not to talk to him again without her earmuffs. When her father explained to her that the jeep and the driver were going to take them through the desert, Sara could not believe it. “But, but, but,” she stopped. There was no point. She wanted to walk through the desert. Like those guys on National Geographic. “humphhh” she said. Dada always watched those shows until she was ready to scream. Sara sulked. Most of the time. When they stopped for pictures at the highest sand dunes, Sara decided to slip away. When the driver was busy taking Mom and Dad’s pictures, she slid behind the jeep and ran off. She ran and ran and ran until her socks and shoes were so heavy with the sand that she couldn’t move an inch. Now she was living the life on National Geographic. There was no shelter. The sun was biting into her skin. She saw something green. A plant, she thought and crawled towards it but it was not just any plant. It was a cactus. the needles poked into her hand. “Ouch, ouch ouch,” she said when the needles poked. Then she heard something approach, sure that it would be a dangerous animal, Sarah started running fast while screaming. Sara jumped up to stand but bumped her head against the sunroof of the jeep. She looked around, dazzled. “What? Where?” “Come on sleepy head,” her father picked her up in his arms.“Lets go and have the barbecue dinner on the cool sands of the desert. You slept all the way here.” Sara was both happy and sad that her great adventure had been just a dream.

Dr Seuss flicks Here’s a look at some of the best Dr Seuss books that were turned into movies: How the Grinch stole Christmas (2000) Inside a snowflake exists the magical land of Whoville where the Whos live. Rejected by the Whos as a child and living in spiteful seculsion for most of his life, the Grinch has always hated the citizens of Whoville. That especially goes for Christmas with the Whos noise, phony sentiment and wasteful materialism. When little Cindy Lou Who’s attempt to transcend the festivities’ empty commercialism by inviting the Grinch ends with his public humiliation, the Grinch hatches a supreme scheme to ruin the holidays.

The Cat in the Hat (2003) Conrad and Sally Walden are home alone with their pet fish. It is raining outside and there is nothing to do. Until The Cat in the Hat walks in the front door. He introduces them to their imagination, and at first it’s all fun and games, until things get out of hand and The Cat must go, go, go, before their parents get back.

Horton hears a Who (2008) One day, Horton the elephant hears a cry for help coming from a speck of dust. Even though he can’t see anyone on the speck, he decides to help it. As it turns out, the speck of dust is home to the Whos, who live in their city of Whoville. Horton agrees to help protect the Whos and their home, but this gives him nothing but torment from his neighbours, who refuse to believe that anything could survive on the speck. Still, Horton stands by the motto that, “After all, a person is a person, no matter how small.”

The Lorax (2012) In the walled city of Thneed-Ville, where everything is artificial and even the air is a commodity, a boy named Ted hopes to win the heart of his dream girl, Audrey. When he learns of her wish to see a real tree, Ted seeks out the Once-ler, a ruined old businessman outside of town in a stark wasteland. Upon hearing of how the hermit gave into his greed for profits and devastated the land over the protests of the Lorax, Ted is inspired to undo the disaster. However, the greedy Mayor of Thneed-Ville, Aloysius O’Hare, has made his fortune exploiting the environmental collapse and is determined to stop the boy from undermining his business.

Materials: Ingredients: Flour Sugar Cocoa powder Salt Cinnamon Water Canola oil Vanilla extract

1/4 cup 1/4 cup 2 tbsp a pinch a pinch 1/4 cup 2 tbsp 1 to 2 drops

• Basketball • Tennis ball

Directions: • Using your body as a point of measure, drop each ball from shoulder height and take note of where it bounces back up to (knees, waist, chest, etc). • Hold up both balls with the smaller, lighter ball balanced on top of the other. • Drop the balls at exactly the same time, making sure they are perfectly aligned. Note what happens.

What is happening: Method: • Place flour, sugar, cocoa, salt and cinnamon in a microwave safe ceramic mug. Stir with a fork or spoon to mix well and break up any clumps. • Add the oil, water and vanilla to the cup and stir until the mixture is smooth. • Place in a microwave with the heat on high until the mixture is cooked through, about a minute and 40 seconds. • Allow it to cool for a minute and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a teaspoon or two of whipped cream.

Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.

When the balls hit the ground, the small ball on top will, shoot off very high. The larger ball on the bottom falls dead when it hits the ground, as though it is flat. Energy transfer during a collision is a part of everyday life. The bottom heavier ball has transferred most of its energy to the smaller, lighter ball. The energy has been transferred to the small ball during the collision. Because the energy has left the larger ball it now only has a small amount of energy, which results in a small bounce. When you lift a ball up you are giving it energy. In this case you are giving it potential energy, which means the ball has the potential to do some work. When you drop the ball, it gains moving (kinetic) energy as it loses its potential energy. When a ball is dropped, it will not bounce up to the original height from which it has fallen, as you discovered in step 1. This is because some of the energy has been transformed to other energies when the ball hits the ground. If all of the moving energy was kept in the ball, a would bounce back to the original height that it was dropped.
