Hi light

2 Dresser Crabs

Did you know that parrots name their children? Or that chimpanzees play with dolls? There are so many things that we still don’t know about our friends in the animal kingdom, but we learn new, fun, and weird animal facts all the time. Check out these crazy animal facts:

Lots of animals can hide themselves by using camouflage and their surroundings, but the dresser crab bests them in all by b dressing up! As it moves, the crab scans sca the ground for any objects it can attach to velcro-like patches on its exoskeleton a to best match the surroundings. If it senses m danger, dang it will freeze in its tracks and flawlessly d merge into the background. The dresser crab is a i super-model under the sea!

Veined Octopus V

Whales W O Obviously, humans aren’t the only animals that sing. Birds do it and even killer whales do it. Wait, what? Whales love to sing and they usually sing just one song at any given time. But once they get bored of that song, a whale in the group will start singing a new one. Scientists have found out that a song on ng doesn’t stay limited to just one population. A does catchy enough tune will actually spread all overr the Pacific, from Australia to French Polynesia, thousandss of miles, over a couple of years! You know what would be a great idea for a television show ... Whale Idol! g

The Th Vampire Squid The vampire squid lives way down in the parts of the sea where barely any light can reach and it is one of the sneakiest animals in the world. Its eyes glow in the dark and when it senses danger, it runs away... but it doesn’t move! The squid first uses its black underbelly as a cloak and illuminates its eyes and slowly contracts them, giving the illusion of running away, but in reality it just stays in the same place! Don’t worry, vampire squids only eat really small fish... or do they?

Octopi are known to be quite crafty O creatures; some can hide by squeezc ing i into spaces ten times smaller than themselves. Others are expert mimics, t morphing their colour and appearance m to to look like bigger and more dangerous creatures like a sea-snake or scorpion fish. cre e But the t veined octopus is the coolest of them th all. ll It will ill hide itself by squeezing into shells or any other waste it can gather to form a makeshift fortress. If the octopus can actually get a hold of materials like a coconut shell, it will take its defences on the road. It will wrap itself in the shell and roll out on the ocean floor like a bunker on wheels. It’s like they are ar The Transformers... except that they are not robots and they live underwater. Octo-Bots roll out! ro

S Cucumbers Sea M Most Mos people would say that the sea cucumber is possibly the most boring cuc animal in the animal kingdom. But the ani sea cucumber can do something really cool and no other living being in the world can do it: The sea cucumber is capable of transforming iitself into a liquid. The sea cucumber will transform its solid tissue structure into a liquid, and then transform back into a solid, just like that. This special ability allows them to literally pour their bodies into tight spaces and solidify again to hide from predators.

Hi Light

Wood Frogs Every autumn, most animals head E d south for the winter but the wood frog stays put. It simply lies down n and freezes solid. When it thaws,, months later, it just hops away and a gets right back to eating flies and an stuff. So how do they do it? It’s not like the frogs just slow down their l metabolism and take a nap, like bears. The m t b li he frogsicles are dead dead, in the sense that they have no brain acctivity. tivity The reason the th frogs can do this and you probably can’t an’t is that living cells are damaged when the water inside them freezes, so when the frogs feel winter coming on, their liverss increase the production of sugar, which is then pumped into the cells in place of water. Since the sugar won’t lose shape when it’s frozen, the cells take exactly zero damage. Frozen frogcicles anyone?

The Horned Lizard This is actually quite cool, when threatened; the T Horned Lizard stops the blood flow to its head, building up pressure in the small vessels inside its eyes. At the right moment, it will break these vesssels and propel a jet of blood up to five feet away from fro o its eyes! The idea is that the blood tastes so bad b d that the predator then just runs away.

Parrots Dolphins, crows, monkeys and parrots all use D special calls when they want to talk to a specific member of their groups. Scientists have discovered that parrot parents gave each chick unique name. Much like a human, the adult a uniq will choose a name for its young soon parrot w p after aft ter it’s born. The parrots later make changes to t their name as they grow older. Polly has a name!

Chimpanzee Did you know that chimpanzees like playing with dolls! Scientists have found that young female chimps will ttake sticks, bark, small logs and vines, and cradle them as if they were baby cchimps themselves. When playing with their doll-sticks, the W yyoung females will cuddle with them, put them to bed and rest with them in p their nests. A few times, the chimp girls will even build separate nests just for them to pretendlive in. And it’s not just girl chimps, one young male chimp was seen using a stick to play “airplane,” resting on his back and holding the stick up with his hands and feet, the way that many parents play with their young children.

4 Make a Sssssssnake! Bet you never thought you could make something cool and funky out of an empty carton of eggs! Well, ToffeeTV’s Ayesha Mehmood figured out a really creative way to put those empty cartons to use!

Supplies needed:

How to make it:

• An empty carton of egg • Green or a color of paint • Some string • Scissors • A cutter or blade • 2 pencils • A foam sheet or coloured paper to make the snake’s tongue • A thick needle

2

1

• First, use the scissors or the cutter to cut out each cup in the egg carton. Be careful when using sharp tools. It’s always a good idea to have someone older supervise you. • Next, paint these pieces in different shades of the color. • Now you need to push the needle with the thread, through each of the coloured cups as shown in image 4. • Go ahead and tie a knot at the very end. You can make these pieces as loose or as tight together as you want, depending on how smoothly you want the snake to move. • Finally, use the pieces of the foam sheet or coloured paper to cut out a tongue and glue or tape it on to the front of the snake. • You can use two pencils and attached strings across the snake’s body and see how you can control your very own slithering snake!

Pin the tail When you’re happy and you know it wag your tail. Don’t believe it? Here you go… A wacky inventor has created a fluffy tail for humans that wags when you’re happy. The “Tailly” hooks up to a heart rate monitor — and is programmed to wag faster the more excited you get. Japanese Shota Ishiwatari, the brains behind the accessory, is planning to launch it in the UK this year. He hopes the gadget, which comes in four colours, will put a smile on people’s faces and even help couples communicate better. He said: “Tailly is fun to wear to parties, while out with friends or playing with kids. You could even wear Tailly on a date and express your true feelings through the wagging tail. Even better, your partner could also wear one for the both of you to add a level of subconscious communication.” SOURCE: THESUN.CO.UK

Caught cat-handed Prison guards in Brazil’s northeast Alagoas state say they have foiled a jailbreak plot with a surprising accomplice: a black and white cat. The cat had a cell phone, drills, assorted batteries and two saws taped to its body when it was spotted by guards as it was about to enter the prison in Arapiraca. Prison officials maintain the items attached to the cat were to be used to facilitate a prison break. The prison’s more than 250 inmates were all considered suspects as officials said they did not immediately know who the cat was supposed to be aiding. The incident is under investigation, and the cat has been handed over to animal control. SOURCE: EDITION.CNN.COM

When Alicia Atkins of Glendale, Arizona, was undergoing a routine C-section in October, something extraordinary happened. Atkins’s baby girl — still inside her mother’s womb — reached up and grabbed her doctor’s finger. Realising how special the moment was, Dr Allen Sawyer, who has also delivered Atkins’s other two children, called to her husband Randy to grab the camera. In a split second, he was able to capture the special moment just in time. “I think it’s an amazing, beautiful photo; it’s just a precious photo at this point,” Atkins said. She is actually a professional photographer herself and owns her own business called A Classic PinUp Photography. She shared the remarkable photo on her business’ Facebook page the day after Christmas, and it has since gone viral, having been shared more than 2,000 times. Atkins said she did not expect how popular the photo would become. “We are so thrilled beyond words at how positive and grateful people are that we shared it,” Atkins said. She and her husband have named their new baby girl Neveah, which is ‘heaven’ spelled backwards. Meanwhile, the irony that her husband used her camera to take the photo is not lost on her. “It was a little weird that my husband took one of the most popular photos on the site,” Atkins said. Motorcyclist 1 Koala 0 Don’t worry mate, the koala is fine. However, the same cannot be said for the biker or his bike. The footage from one of the motorcycle’s on-board camera shows the animal running along the tarmac when it encountered the group of motorcyclists. Every single bike managed to avoid him... except for one. Thankfully the biker slowed down enough to avoid killing the koala. Instead, the koala got knocked over, looked adorably dazed for a second and ran back into the bushes. There is no word on the current condition of the koala or the motorcyclist who could have possibly fled Australia to escape his shame. SOURCE: JALOPNIK.COM

s n i g i r O d r o W Swashbuckler Do you know the origin of swashbuckler? To swash is to make a loud noise with one’s weapons. A buckler is a small shield held by a handle on its back and used to deflect blade slashes of an enemy during a sword fight. A swashbuckler was a show-off soldier who made a lot of noise with his swords and shields and other weapons. The swashbuckler or the boastful soldier used to be a popular character in Roman comedies. The word swashbuckler soon evolved after being applied to bold pirates who captured ships with swashbuckling derring-do.

Goat’s eyes have rectangular pupils, which allow them to watch over their broad, flat grazing area for predators. Honeybees have hair on their eyes to help them collect pollen. The giraffe has no vocal cords and communicates by vibrating the air around its neck. Dolphins sleep with one half of the brain at a time, and with one eye closed. A snail can sleep for 3 years at a stretch. Most elephants weigh less than the tongue of a blue whale. A rat can last longer without water than a camel.
