THE EXPRESS TRIBUNE, JANUARY 19, 2014

Hi light

2 Have you seen small, yellow, cylindrical, creatures who have one or two eyes in movies or toy stores? Yes, we are talking about the Minions. The minions have been featured in movies Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 and are set to make a comeback in a third movie. Let’s take a look at the personalities, languages and the characters of these movies.

The minions are creatures with little self-control, but cute, innocent and friendly that makes the viewers fall in love with them. Evolving from yellow single-cell organisms into beings they have only one purpose: to serve history’s most ambitious villains. They work for Gru (the villain) and keen to please, willingly help with evil plans, but at the same time they are friendly and fun-loving. They are capable of building weapons, operating those weapons, using computers and even driving, so don’t be deceived by their simple and funny appearance. Minions love bananas and apples and just the sight of one of these fruits can result in minion chaos. Minions also have range of surprising characteristics; they can survive without air, as one is seen in outer space without oxygen in Despicable Me (read about it on page 3).

Felonius Gru, often referred to as Gru, was a supervillain and jelly manufacturer and is now a consultant for the Anti-Villain League. Gru is a tall, bald man with blue eyes, long nose and broad, powerful physique. He dresses in a light grey sweater underneath a black collared coat along with a striped scarf, black trousers, and shoes. He is very strong, athletic and also intelligent.

Minions are all a similar size and shape but each has a different feature, such as height, hair, clothes and number of eyes which help to tell him apart from the others. Minions wear metal goggles according to their number of eyes, blue overalls with Gru’s symbol made on them and small black gloves.

is a one-eyed short minion with combed hair. He is playful, funny and a master of video games. He is also the most innocent minion.

is a two-eyed minion. He is intelligent, kind, caring, funny and just like Stuart good at video games. He is good at making weapons and the ‘Rocket Launcher’ is his signature weapon.

is a two-eyed, skinny minion; with nice combed hair.

is a small, one-eyed minion, with buzz-cut hair. Carl is a fun-loving minion and likes to skateboard and make noises.

has two eyes and combed hair. He is sweet and nice to people and is very similar to Dave.

Hi light

3 Minions choose to express themselves through actions not words. They speak in a strange language. Take a look at some of their words:

Despicable Me is based on Gru, a super-villain, his yellowcoloured minions and three orphans namely Margo, Edith, and Agnes. An unknown super-villain steals the Great Pyramid of Giza which leads Gru to team up with his colleague Dr Nefarius and construct a plan. Gru bases his idea on his childhood dream of being an astronaut and decides to steal the moon. The plan is expensive and Gru seeks a loan from the Bank of Evil, , but will only be provided the money if Gru can obtain the necessary shrink ray first. Gru and his minions steal the shrink ray from a secret base but this is not the end. You have to watch the movie to find out the adventures of the team.

Despicable Me 2 is the sequel to Despicable Me. A secret laboratory near the Arctic Circle is stolen by a mysterious vehicle using a giant magnet. The Anti-Villain League (AVL) hires Gru to find out who person stole it. Watch the movie and find out if Gru and the minions are able to uncover the mystery.

Home sweet home A home in the Staffordshire countryside comes with five bedrooms, three reception rooms, an extensive amount of land and a golf course. Despite the huge price tag, it’s doubtful that many people would expect to get a six-hole golf course when purchasing a house. But that’s exactly what you receive with this property in Betley Hall Gardens. The listing of the house describes the course as a ‘professionally landscaped and drained six-hole golf course with bunkers’. But you’ll probably have to make some sacrifices if you do go ahead and indulge yourself. You may have to put up with a few broken windows as a result of flying balls and your golf-loving friends will also want to visit every weekend. If it does get a bit too much then you could always relax by the lake or watch a movie at the mini-cinema, which are both built into the home. Sounds fancy doesn’t it? METRO.CO.UK

Banana theft A hungry criminal smashed his car through the front doors of a petrol station just so he could steal a banana. The fruit thief repeatedly crashed his car into the doors of the station in Newington, Connecticut, before breaking the glass, getting out of his vehicle and taking a banana off a shelf. He then stood in front of the CCTV, making no effort to hide his face, and began peeling and eating the stolen banana. The break-in set off the station’s alarm, alerting the police, but the man had time to carry out his strange crime and make a swift exit. A police statement read: “Review of surveillance video depicted a suspect, operating a light-coloured Ford Freestyle station wagon with Connecticut registration plates, back into the store entrance door several times creating an opening in the glass. The suspect selected a banana from a shelf, peeled and ate the fruit, and then exited the store. No other items were taken during the burglary.” We certainly have not heard of such a theft before. Sniffing danger

A three-year-old boy has a nose for danger, like his firefighter father, after sniffing out a blaze. Eli Burns-King, of Saltdean, East Sussex, smelt burning in a charity shop and told father Matthew. The 40-year-old looked up to see smoke coming from a faulty light and raised the alarm. Matthew, who has been a fireman for 16 years, said, “I am very proud of him and have always tried to teach him to be on the lookout for signs of danger and I think that has hopefully rubbed off. He turned to me and said “Daddy I think I can smell burning”. I looked to the ceiling and I couldn’t believe it, there was smoke pouring out of the light fitting.” With the shop full of clothes it could have turned into a serious fire; he managed to smell the smoke just in time. Eli’s into Spiderman so he thinks he’s got Spiderman powers. Volunteer shopkeeper John Kirby quickly switched off the power before removing the faulty fitting. John said: “I understand his dad is a firefighter so I think he must have cottoned on to some of his knowledge. Thankfully he brought it to our attention very quickly and I managed to shut off the power and remove the fitting. It was red hot when I tried to take it out. He almost certainly saved us from a fire — I can’t thank him enough.” Hero Eli was given a free toy for saving the day. METRO.CO.UK

Ride me Why bother walking when you can have someone carry you around? Those were probably the thoughts of Akita the dog. May be she thought if humans can have cars, she can have her own version of a four-wheel drive and stood on a turtle’s back for a ride. This picture which became popular on social media had people fascinated and questioning the dog’s intentions. One thing is for sure though, the dog won’t be getting anywhere in a hurry if he adopts this means of transport. METRO.CO.UK

Word Origins Pizza Pizza is one of the yummiest foods and we all love to eat pizza. When you don’t like dishes made at home the solution is always to eat pizza but where does the word originate from? It was derived from an Old High German word ‘bizzo’ or ‘pizzo’ which means ‘mouthful’ and was brought to Italy in the middle of the sixth century CE by the invading Lombards. And hence the process of making pizza was derived from Italy. The flattening out of the dough was derived from the Latin word ‘pinsa’, from the verb ‘pinsere’ which meant to pound or to crush. Plucking the pizza quickly from the oven is derived from the Italian word ‘pizzicare’ meaning ‘to pluck’. The blackening of bread in the oven or the black ash that gathers at the bottom of the oven is derived from the Latin word ‘picea’. All these words and processes played an integral role in the making of pizza and the final product is what we eat today loaded with cheese and yummy toppings.

Cool facts Compared to other animals, dolphins are believed to be very intelligent. Dolphins are carnivores (meat eaters). Bottlenose dolphins are the most common and well known type of dolphin. Dolphins live in schools or pods of up to 12 individuals. Dolphins often display a playful attitude which makes them popular with humans. They can be seen jumping out of the water, riding waves, play fighting and occasionally interacting with humans swimming in the water. Dolphins use a blowhole on top of their heads to breathe. Dolphins have excellent eyesight and hearing as well as the ability to use echolocation for finding the exact location of objects. Dolphins communicate with each other by clicking, whistling and other sounds.
