Hi-light Hi light

ock music has been around for a long time. It will be an impossible feat to try and give you an insight into everything that has ever happened in the industry. The genre has seen the rise and fall of many legends. It has also been the genre that has seen the most diversity and innovation over the decades. This is why we have decided to bring you a very small chunk of modern rock history to you, along with the names of a few bands destined for rock music’s hall of fame.

2

With the ascension of Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ in 1991, alternative rock became the dominant popular music. But while other bands soon sprung up as part of the so-called grunge movement (a merging of hard rock and punk), other groups, like Soundgarden, straddled the worlds of alternative and mainstream rock music. One of the first bands to capitalize on mainstream rock’s comeback was Limp Bizkit, which melded hard rock and rap into a new hybrid call rap-rock. Groups like Staind and Puddle of Mudd followed in Limp Bizkit’s wake, though these bands focused on melodic hard rock rather than integrating rap into the mix. At the same time, bands that had thrived during grunge’s heyday but didn’t easily fit into the alternative subgenre, such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, continued to find audiences throughout the ‘90s. As rock music enters the 21st Century, the most successful acts possess the same spirit as their ‘60s predecessors, even if they sound quite different. Linkin Park fuses hip-hop and metal, while 3 Doors Down emulates hard-rock traditions of the past while providing a contemporary spin. Undoubtedly, rock music will keep evolving in the future, drawing from its rich history while continuing to keep its ear open for the next sonic reinvention.

No group taps into a more varied tapestry of classic-rock influences than Radiohead. You want a crushing, guitar-centric single? There’s Creep. You want world-conquering arena rock the size of Bono’s ego? There’s all of ‘The Bends.’ You want a socially conscious concept album at par with Pink Floyd classics? Check out OK Computer. You want sonically adventurous experimentation in the tradition of Brian Eno? How about Kid A? Radiohead continues to mutate and innovate, finding even new ways to create music and new ways to release it. If you think that Thom Yorke and friends have become too computer-y for classic-rock status, think about the music’s legacy of experimentation — from the Beatles and tape loops to Pete Townshend and synthesizers to David Bowie and, well, anything. Radiohead align perfectly with the tradition in which artists seek new and different sounds to serve as the framework for great music. Because of their talent and creativity, many Radiohead albums are already classics.

This British trio is the modern torchbearer for progressive rock, a label that Muse sometimes resisted. Call it whatever you want (space-rock, symphonic rock, experimental rock), Muse’s musical universe allows for ambitious mini-epics. Prog-rock and pop acceptance haven’t co-existed this seamlessly since the ’70s, a tribute to the balance that the band strikes. But it’s not just Muse’s big, glossy, mysterious sound that ties it to classic rock; it’s also the intellectual subject matter of Matthew Bellamy’s lyrics. His musical ruminations on politics, uprisings and the end of the world put him in excellent classic-rock company, not limited to The Who, David Bowie and Rush.

3 With fuzzy guitars and fuzzier memories, Queens of the Stone Age can be found floating above the intersection of stoner rock and stoner metal — which certainly qualifies them as one of the ‘Modern-Day Bands Destined for Classic-Rock Greatness’ list. Josh Homme and pals are like the Grateful Dead rising out of Deep Purple: They hit hard, but hang around long enough to make sure they left a bruise. Homme pays tribute to the glory of rock radio and howls about classic subjects like money and drugs. He steals song titles from Elvis and sounds from Blue Oyster Cult. And we can only be in awe of a guy who got to create a side project with classic-rock legend John Paul Jones and one-time QOTSA co-conspirator Dave Grohl.

Hi-light

Let’s face it, even if you enjoy the Black Keys, Kings of Leon, Cage the Elephant, or whomever, this is a pretty crappy era for rock stars, with both personality and artistic achievement becoming rare. Then Paramore enters the scene with Hayley Williams (who’s got star charisma and sass to spare, inspiring none other than Taylor Swift to attempt revenge-punk homageon 2010’s ‘Better Than Revenge’). What makes the band stand out is the fact that Paramore’s songs have gotten better as they’ve grown in popularity. Starting with too-good-for-emo standouts like ‘That’s What You Get,’ they began carving quartz-hard hooks out of tougher sounds for 2009’s album Brand New Eyes and blew the walls off entirely for 2013’s Paramore, which went to No. 1 for great reasons, like the too-adorable ‘Still Into You’ and the gospel-climaxed powerhouse ‘Ain’t It Fun.’ Last but not the least, the epic ‘(One of Those) Crazy Girls’ reaches classic status solely because of Williams.

When the Followill boys (three brothers and a cousin) released their first album in 2003, some called them the ‘Southern Strokes’ because of their edgy, post-punk vibe and twangy guitars (plus plenty of cowbell). Over the course of a few albums, the Nashville band’s sound became bombastic (opening for U2 certainly didn’t hurt), featuring bigger guitars and catchier choruses. With 2008’s blockbuster ‘Only by the Night,’ the Kings of Leon truly became rock royalty, boasting multi-platinum sales, arena tours and huge radio hits like Use Somebody.

5 myths debunked

Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He’s all right now

Chewing gum will stay in your stomach for seven years No it won’t. It’s true that it doesn’t digest but that doesn’t mean it lingers in your stomach forever. It will come out with everything else, probably looking a lot like it did when it first went down.

What did the new chemistry teacher say to the class? I’d tell you a joke but I know I wouldn’t get a reaction

Dropping a penny from the Empire State Building would kill someone Pennies only weigh about a gramme and they tumble as they fall so the air resistance is significant. If it reaches its terminal velocity it would be falling at about 100miles per hour. So when it finally hit you on the head, it would hurt a little but you would quickly forget about it.

Why is reading a book about anti-gravity difficult? It’s impossible to put down

What did the ex-banker say at the job interview? I used to be a banker but I lost interest

What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing — but it let out a little whine.

The Great Wall of China is the only man-made structure visible from space The Great wall of China is not even visible from International Space Station, which is only about 173 miles above sea level which is considered low Earth orbit. That’s barely even space. There are other man-made structures visible from that height, however, one being the Pyramids. The five-second rule The belief that it takes five seconds for bacteria on the floor to hop on a piece of dropped food is misplaced. The truth is, it only takes a second. Fingernails and hair keep growing after death Once you die, everything in your body will start to decay, even your hair and fingernails. Although the origin of this myth is disputable it probably stems from the fact that when skin starts to recede from a dead body it makes hair and nails appear longer.

Extreme experiments The 1mm-long tardigrades were collected from a frozen moss sample in Antarctica in 1983, according to a new paper published in the journal Cryobiology. Japan’s National Institute of Polar Research stored the eight-legged, segmented critters at -4oF for just over 30 years. They thawed and revived two of the animals, which are also known as water bears or moss piglets, in early 2014. One of them died 20 days into the experiment, reports the BBC. But its companion survived and managed to reproduce with a third tardigrade that had been hatched from a frozen egg. It went on to lay 19 eggs, of which 14 survived. Tardigrades, found living in water across the world, are renowned for being tough and have previously survived several days after being blasted into space. Their metabolism shuts down and they enter a cryptobiotic state when faced with low temperatures. The previous record for tardigrades surviving extreme cold was eight years. “The present study extends the known length of long-term survival in tardigrade species considerably,” researchers wrote in the newly released paper. Lead researcher Megumu Tsujimoto said the team now wants to “unravel the mechanism for long-term survival by looking into damage to tardigrades’ DNA and their ability to repair it.” The tardigrade still has some way to go to beat the record for surviving in a frozen state, however, which is currently held by the nematode worm — which managed 39 years in deep freeze before being revived. Researchers in New Zealand got a surprise when they were presented with what appears to be a two-legged Frogfish. The creature was sent to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in a bid to discover where it came from and what it is. The black fishy, frog-looking oddball was picked up by holidaymakers Claudia Howse and James Beuvink at New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. But the pair had no idea what it was so decided to hand it over to science. Unfortunately the creature was dead when it was given to researchers who are now attempting to work out exactly where it came from. But its discovery has sparked intrigue with some even suggesting it looks like Toothless the dragon from a wellknown animated movie. Experts are now probing the rare find. The museum said, “This weird creature is likely to be a species of Frogfish, but we won’t know until we have a chance to examine it closely!” MIRROR.CO.UK

Smart plant Horticulturalists have spent years carrying out grafting trials to produce the dual-cropping plant named ‘Egg and Chips’ which grows aubergines from its stem and potatoes from its roots. Experts experimented with more than 20 varieties of aubergine, commonly known as egg plants, before selecting one that was deemed best for size and performance. They then carefully cut the delicate 2-inch tall stems of the aubergine and potato plants in half at an identical angle before grafting them together. The lower end of the potato plant and the top part of the aubergine then naturally fused together and grew on. The end result is a batch of about four big purple coloured vegetables and two kilogrammes of potatoes under the soil. The ‘Egg and Chips’ plants are now being sold by British seed company Thompson & Morgan for the first time. A spokesman said the new dual-cropping plants will save space and are ideal for keen growers with small gardens or confined spaces like a balcony. It is also hoped the wacky product will excite children and get them interested in horticulture. The new plant can grow is most sunny, sheltered spot, in the garden or in a pot on a patio or balcony. Michael Perry, the product development manager for Suffolk-based Thompson & Morgan, said, “Egg and Chips is a real innovation. For seasoned vegetable growers this is a really novel development.” EXPRESS.CO.UK

The arachnid of the opera Late one night, a musician heard his violin start to play all by itself. As he lay in the dark, he summoned the courage to get up and see what was making the ‘soft sound, certainly audible and unmistakeable’ as his violin strings, wondering if it could be a ghostly spirit or a poltergeist moving the strings. Picking up his camera, he moved quickly to snap a photograph of the instrument, hoping to capture any creature or apparition on film. What he managed to capture was a spider, making use of all eight legs to walk around playing the strings like they were made of web. METRO.CO.UK

6 • Begin straight across on the inside (grey section) and out through the bottom eyelets. • Both lace ends angle upwards to about the level of the next pair of eyelets, forming ‘empty loops’ above before angling back down and crossing each other in the middle of the shoe. • Both ends continue angling down to the level of the current pair of eyelets, looping around the shoelace at that position. On this first pass, they will loop around the bottom straight section, but on subsequent passes they will loop around the empty loops from previous passes. • Both ends then angle back up and feed in through the next higher set of eyelets. Don’t pull tight because the slack will be picked up on the next pass. • Repeat the above steps to create another set of empty loops above, then loop around the loops below, then feed out through the next higher set of eyelets. • Continue weaving up and down between pairs of eyelets, at each pass alternating between feeding in or feeding out through the next higher set of eyelets. • At the top of the shoe, the lace ends once again pick up the empty loops from the previous pass before meeting in the middle. In honour of the 10-year anniversary of High School Musical this week, here are some random Zac Efron facts you may not have known:

His favourite city in the world is London.

Sixteen-year-old Nix has sailed across the globe and through centuries aboard her father’s time-travelling ship. But when he gambles with her very existence, it all may be about to end.

He was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, which dubbed him ‘The New American Heartthrob’ in 2007.

Meet Scarlett Epstein, BNF (Big Name Fan) in her online community of fanfiction writers, world-class nobody at Melville High. When her real life classmates find her online, they discover what she really thinks of them.

In an article, Zac revealed he wished to one day play an action hero.

If Zac could swap lives with anyone, he says he would like to be the Queen of England.

He gets starstruck whenever he sees Angelina Jolie. According to Zac, he turns into a ‘fifth grader’ in her presence.

Zac’s favourite TV shows are American Idol and the World Series of Poker. Zac has an autographed baseball collection with signatures from every San Francisco Giants player of the past 10 years. Zac reportedly learned to ride a motorcycle from Tom Cruise after the two bumped into each other at a party.

The followup to Red Queen, one of 2015’s most popular debuts. We pick up with our resourceful heroine Mare Barrow running for her life with the remaining rebellion after a killer betrayal.

When Max Cobb receives an invite to the prank-pulling Chaos Club, he jumps at the opportunity. When he and the four other misfits who received similar invitations realise it’s a set-up, he decides it’s time for payback.

Forced to reveal her power to save a friend, Henrietta Howell is shocked when instead of being executed, she’s named the first female sorcerer in hundreds of years and invited to train as one of Her Majesty’s royal sorcerers. Some of Zac’s favourite musicians are The Postal Service, The Shins, The Gorillaz, and John Mayer.

In 2012, he voiced Teg Wiggins in The Lorax.

Zac plays the piano. The first song that he learned how to play was ‘Heart And Soul.’

The lives of four teens intersect by chance during a freak thunderstorm in New York City. When they are struck by lightning, they embark on an epic all-nighter to follow their dreams, fall in love and reconcile the past. He was accepted into the University of Southern California, but deferred his enrollment to continue acting.

While using scissors in the fifth grade, he accidentally cut off one of his eyebrows. He promptly cut off the other one so he could look symmetrical.

Since his singing is so good, Zac was offered a record deal by Simon Cowell, but declined, saying, “Acting is my main priority.”

Some of his favourite cereals include Kashi, Granola, Honey Nut Cheerios and Quaker Oats.
