Long live the tortoise! Meet Tommy the tortoise, one of Britain’s oldest pets. Tommy, who is 116 years old, has been alive through the reign of six monarchs in England, survived two world wars, and has witnessed mankind go from horse and cart to astronauts in outer space. Even more surprising than her age (yes, Tommy is a girl tortoise) is the fact that she has never once been to the vet, making her the healthiest pet ever. Tommy was bought at a market in 1909 and was believed to be 10 years old at the time, making her year of birth 1898. She is currently the pet of 57-year-old Sheila Floris — the granddaughter of her first owner — in Croydon, south London. This means that she has passed through three generations of the family. For years, Tommy was believed to be a boy until she laid eggs about 20 years ago, but by then it was too late to change her name. “The name had stuck for so long, we couldn’t change it,” said Mrs Floris. Tommy was a teenager when the Titanic sank and she has been a witness to mankind’s greatest advances, including the aircraft, the television and the internet. METRO.CO.UK
Lightning baby Miracle baby Kimberly Gordon has been nicknamed ‘Flash’ after she came into the world in a bolt of lightning. When she was still in her mother’s tummy, her parents were struck by lightning while they were sheltering under a tree. The thunderbolt passed through Kimberly’s father’s ear and hit her mother, exiting through her thumb. Both parents were taken to the hospital but the doctors were mostly worried about the baby. Fortunately, baby Kimberly arrived in the world alive, just with her hair standing on end. Shocked dad Gordon immediately dubbed his daughter ‘Flash’ after the 1930’s comic book hero and says he hopes she “will run fast, or save the universe.” He added: “Somebody’s definitely watching out for us. Everybody we’ve seen says it’s a miracle she’s alive.” MIRROR.CO.UK

Cow parade
Residents of a village in England were given a rude awakening early one morning when a herd of cows escaped from the fields and marched down the main street. The cows’ impromptu parade caused chaos among the community members. Community matron Cathy Ryan said that she felt the road shake and there was “loud bellowing” coming from the outside of her bedroom window. “I looked out of the window and a herd of about 30 cows including Long Horn Highland cattle were running down the road.” She quickly went outside and tried to round up the cows, leading them in a marsh area behind the cottages near the area where they usually graze. Two police officers also arrived on the scene to help block the cows’ escape from the marsh area. The question of how the cows escaped remains a mystery as all the gates of the fields were shut. Magical wedding A Harry Potter-obsessed couple recently had a wedding dedicated to the popular books. When Alex, 26, and Zoe Pitas, 25, celebrated their marriage in March at the Wroxeter Hotel near Shrewsbury they wanted to make sure everyone knew how much they loved J.K Rowling’s famous books. The Harry Potter-themed wedding included potions, waving wands, having make believe duels and a special Harry Potter book cake. In addition to all the Harry Potter trappings, the couple also incorporated the values and ethics from the Harry Potter books’ in their wedding vows. “We didn’t use exact quotes but a lot of the values in the books were the sort of things we had included in the service,” said Zoe. “Things like keeping friendships and being there to help each other prosper as well as being a husband and wife.” METRO.CO.UK

6 Did you know? Why do we laugh when we get tickled? Imagine someone coming towards you, their fingers wiggling towards your ribcage just where it meets your underarms. They have a mischievous look on their face because they know that soon you will be an uncontrollable mess of laughter and giggles. You draw your arms tightly together to stop this sensitive area from being tickled but already you have a smile on your face. Have you ever wondered why getting tickled and laughing seem to go hand in hand? According to science, when a person is being tickled, they can’t help but laugh. It is an involuntary response, something they can’t control. But why is laughter the response? To understand that, first we have to look at the physiology of tickling. Underneath your skin there are millions of tiny nerve endings that inform your brain about all kinds of touch. When these nerve endings are lightly stimulated — by another person’s fingers or by a feather — they send a message to your brain, and this message alerts the part of the brain which governs pleasant feelings, causing laughter. But that is not the only reason why we laugh when we get tickled. Evolutionary scientists have also said that laughing while getting tickled is a way for the body to show the tickler that it does not mind getting tickled, so that the situation does not become too serious. After all, the places where we are the most ticklish are also the places which are most sensitive to injury. By bringing about an involuntary laughter response, the tickle attack remains fun and playful, and doesn’t turn into an attack where someone might actually gets hurt. It is also fascinating that we don’t laugh when we tickle ourselves. This is because a predictable light touch from your own fingers apparently is not be worth your mind’s attention, so your brain discards the information before it has a chance to reach the pleasure sensors.

Cool facts Rabbits and parrots can see behind themselves without even moving their heads. Butterflies taste food by standing on top of it. Their taste receptors are in their feet unlike humans who have most on their tongue. Most of the dust in your home is actually dead skin. Although the Stegosaurus dinosaur was over nine metres long, its brain was only the size of a walnut. Humans get a little taller in space because there is no gravity pulling down on them. Because of the unusual shape of their legs, kangaroos and emus struggle to walk backwards. A hippopotamus may seem huge but it can still run faster than a man. Even if a clock is broken, it still shows the correct time twice a day. Sneezing with your eyes open is impossible. The trickiest tongue twister in the English language is apparently “Sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick”. Give it a try and see for yourself. Elephants are the only mammals physically unable to jump. This is because of their enormous weight.

Instructions: You will need:
1. Fill the plastic bottle with water until it is three quarters full.
• Water
2. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid.
• A clear plastic bottle with a cap (that won’t leak)
3. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter (this will make your tornado easier to see). 4. Put the cap on tightly.
• Glitter 5. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it by the neck. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds, stop and look inside to see if you can see a mini tornado forming in the water. You might need to try it a few times before you get it working properly. You may experiment with more or less water, or change the amount of dishwashing liquid, or the brand of dishwashing liquid.
• Dishwashing liquid
What’s happening? 1
Spinning the bottle in a circular motion creates a water vortex that looks like a mini tornado. A vortex is the part in fluids (liquids or gases) where the fluid flows in a spinning mortion. When you spin the bottle, the water rapidly spins around the centre of the vortex due to an inward force which forces the water towards the centre of its circular path. Vortexes found in nature include tornadoes, hurricanes and whirlpools.
