Father’s Day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, though it is also celebrated widely on other days. Father’s Day was created to complement Mother’s Day, a celebration that honours mothers and motherhood.
Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised six children. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. It did not have much success initially. However, she had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties and other traditional presents for fathers. Since 1938, she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematise the commercial promotion. Americans resisted the holiday during a few decades, perceiving it as just an attempt by merchants to replicate the commercial success of Mother’s Day however, it finally gained momentum.
This Father’s Day treat your father and show him how much you love him. You can start the day by making your father’s favourite breakfast with the help of your mother. You can buy him a small gift such as a tie or a pen or make him a card or photo frame with a picture of you and him in it. There are plenty of activities you can do on this day by spending time with your father such as going for a movie, taking him for dinner or reading books with him making this day special for both of you.
Father’s Day complements similar celebrations such as Mother’s Day and Sibling’s Day that are celebrated to honour mothers and siblings. Mother’s Day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. The celebration of Mother’s Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years. Siblings Day (sometimes called National Siblings Day) is a holiday recognised annually in some parts of the United States on April 10 commemorating the relationships of siblings. However, unlike Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it is not federally recognised.

Argentina Father’s Day in Argentina is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, but there have been several attempts to change the date to August 24, to commemorate the day on which the ‘Father of the Nation’ José de San Martín became a father. Australia In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September, which is the first Sunday of Spring in Australia, and is not a public holiday. YMCA Victoria continues the tradition of honouring the role fathers, and father figures play in parenting through the annual awarding of Local Community Father of the Year in 32 municipalities in Victoria. The Father’s Day Council of Victoria annually recognises fathers in the Father of the Year Award. Canada In Canada, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and is not a public holiday. Father’s Day typically involves spending time with one’s father or the father figures in one’s life. Small family gatherings and the giving of gifts may be part of the festivities organised for Father’s Day. Finland In Finland, Father’s Day (Isänpäivä) is celebrated on the second Sunday of November. It’s an established Flag day. Germany In Germany, Father’s Day (Vatertag) is celebrated differently from other parts of the world.[44] It is always celebrated on Ascension Day (the Thursday forty days after Easter), which is a federal holiday. Regionally, it is also called men’s day or gentlemen’s day. It is tradition for groups of males (young and old but usually excluding pre-teenage boys) to do a hiking tour with one or more smaller wagons, Bollerwagen, pulled by manpower. These traditions are probably rooted in history as on Ascension Day, men would be seated in a wooden cart and carried to the village’s plaza, and the mayor would award a prize to the father who had the most children. Pakistan Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The Rutgers WPF launched a campaign titled ‘Greening Pakistan-Promoting Responsible Fatherhood’ on Father’s Day (Sunday 16, 2013) across Pakistan to promote active fatherhood and responsibility for the care and upbringing of children. Fathers’ Day is not a public holiday in Pakistan.

Moo-ve A wandering cow sparked an armed police chase after escaping from an animal park in Sheffield. The lost Highland cow was spotted making its way through the Manor Top area. Three police cars and a firearms team were called to the scene to recapture the animal. “I looked out of the window and saw all of the police first, then saw a cow wandering up my drive,” explained one local resident. “It wandered around the back of my car and as I opened the front door it actually tried to get in the house. The rescue teams blocked the bottom of my drive with a car and there was a stand-off for a while as it stood chewing my plants. They brought a van up and it ran down the road,” he continued. Apparently it knocked an elderly lady over shortly after as she was trying to stop it. Inspector Rebecca Chapman from South Yorkshire Police said she was unsure how long the cow had been on the loose. “It had been wandering the streets of Sheffield for some time and had become frightened,” she said. Animal park staff said the cow was one of a number that had escaped but was safely brought back. METRO.CO.UK

Godzilla at the beach
A Godzilla-like statue is seen to be emerging from the sea in Bournemouth. The eight metre tall (25ft) figure was erected overnight to the east of Bournemouth Pier as part of a Virgin Media PR stunt. “For a moment I thought we were being invaded,” stunned passer-by Alex Borland told a local newspaper. It took a team of sculptors more than 500 hours to design and produce the creature which weighs over six tonnes. Virgin Media created the creepy tribute to promote its new Big Kahuna quad-play bundle offering television, broadband, landline phone and mobile as part of a value package. Richard Larcombe from Virgin Media said, “We wanted our market-beating quad-play bundle to make a big entrance so naturally we thought what better way than having a giant Big Kahuna monster literally bringing it to the shores of the UK.” METRO.CO.UK
Puppy vows Who let the dogs in? Forget dog-friendly parks and think about a purpose-built dog swimming pool. One dog lover has taken his love for his four-legged friend to the next level by designing a doggy swimming pool complete with fountains, slides and sloping sides. Federico Cano created the Resort Canino Can Jane just outside Barcelona to offer fun and relief from the summer heat for pet dogs. “I don’t see why dogs should not be allowed to enjoy a swim when the weather gets hot just like people can – especially here in Spain where it gets really hot.,” he said. Further adding, “I designed it so that it was a little bit like a beach with a gradual slope that is exactly what dogs appreciate.” He has had some technical issues to get past, including having to create a more powerful filter system. The pool has a lot more to handle than human-only pools — just think of all that shedded fur. One problem that owners will find at the resort, according to Cano, is actually getting them out of the water. “Take the dog to the resort for an hour and I can guarantee that it will sleep for the next two days,” claimed Cano. Pugs are affectionate little creatures and when they find their soul mate, they just know. Such was the case for a pair of love-struck pugs, Betty and Albert, who recently tied the knot in a ‘lavish’ wedding ceremony. The pair met as puppies and were inseparable. For the wedding the bride had her nails done and her fur trimmed and wore a custom-made wedding gown with a train. Groom Albert opted for a traditional morning suit. Wedding rings were exchanged and attached to the dogs’ collars. Once married, Betty and Albert walked back down the aisle, watched by all their pug pals. Then it was off for a slice of dog-friendly cake and a night of dancing at a local hotel. Christine, the owner of the dogs admits it was all a little surreal but she just loves her pugs. “I am pug-obsessed. My whole house is covered in pug photos, pug decorations, pug pillows and pug duvets. They are just so sweet!” she said. Her husband Julian however, thought the ceremony was a little too much. 6 Word Origins Is white chocolate really chocolate? The answer depends on who you ask, but chocolate connoisseurs on a whole would say no. Chocolate is a range of products made with liquid cocoa, cocoa butter and cocoa solids among other ingredients. Depending on the proportions of cocoa there are several different types of chocolate such as dark chocolate, milk chocolate, semisweet chocolate etcetera. White chocolate is not usually included in this list because it misses two of the key ingredients, namely liquid cocoa and cocoa solids, which are the primary flavourful ingredients in any type of real chocolate. White chocolate in many places does contain cocoa butter which is a type of yellowishwhite vegetable fat, but other vegetable oils are often substituted. However, since 2004 in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforced that for a chocolate to be labeled ‘white chocolate’ it must contain at least 20% of cocoa butter. This was done mainly to stop manufacturers from using vegetable oil or other fats rather than including cocoa butter. Among other standard ingredients the FDA also predetermined that white chocolate should contain at least 14% milk solids, 3.5% milk fat and no more than 55% sugar or other sweeteners. Finally, there are also flavourings (most often vanilla) in the white chocolate as the cocoa butter itself isn’t very pleasantly flavourful and thus, isn’t typically used as a standalone flavor. However, despite the firm requirement of cocoa butter in the US and European Union, most still don’t consider white chocolate a true chocolate. In order for something to be officially ‘chocolate’, in many parts of the world, the product must contain the thick chocolate liquid produced when cocoa beans are roasted and ground. It should also have cocoa solids and white chocolate does not include either.

Cool facts Zoologists study the behaviour, physiology, classification and distribution of animals, whether they are living or extinct. Important subjects related to zoology include biology, physics, chemistry, English, algebra, calculus and statistics. Observing animals in their natural habitat can be a time consuming process, zoologists who work in the field need to be patient and willing to spend time in a variety of locations and environments. As well as observing and studying animals, zoologists may spend time writing research articles and reports. Zoologists can also be involved in conservation, protecting endangered animals and their habitats. Zoologists may find jobs working for government agencies, nonprofit organisations, universities, museums and zoos. As part of their job, zoologists may find themselves organising studies of animals in their natural habitat, studying specimens under microscope, fundraising, writing reports and scientific articles, making presentations to schools and interest groups, identifying and classifying animals, estimating wildlife populations and much more. The word ‘zoology’ comes from Greek words meaning ‘animal’ and ‘knowledge’.

What to do: You will need: • 1 dozen large eggs • Vinegar • Food Coloring
1. Gently place the eggs in single layer in a large saucepan. Add enough cold water to cover the eggs by one inch. Now cover them with a lid. Bring the eggs to boil on high heat and then remove them from the heat. Let the eggs stand for 15 minutes. (Adjust the time up or down by three minutes for each size larger or smaller). 2. Pour off the hot water and cool the eggs by running them under cold water (or place them in ice water) until they are completely cold. 3. Mix half a cup boiling water, one teaspoon vinegar and 10 to 20 drops of food coloring in a cup to get the desired colors. Repeat for each color. Dip hard-cooked eggs in the dye for about five minutes. Use a slotted spoon, wire egg holder or tongs to add and remove the eggs from the dye. Allow eggs to dry.

All chemicals are either acids, bases or neutrals. Whether a chemical is acid or base depends on the type of ions it contains. Ions are charged particles that are very small and are invisible to us. If a solution has a lot of hydrogen ions (H+), then it is an acid and if it has a lot of hydroxide ions (OH-) then it is a base. Scientists use something called a pH scale to measure how acidic or basic a chemical is.
