Hi light
2 Movies on cowboys or Westerns, revolving around stories primarily set in the late 19th century in the American Old West, are sheer entertainment that will leave you fixated. Below are three 2016 cowboy flicks you should watch this year:
The origins of the cowboy tradition come from Spain, beginning with the hacienda system of medieval Spain. This style of cattle ranching spread throughout much of the Iberian peninsula and later, was imported to the Americas. Both regions possessed a dry climate with sparse grass, and thus large herds of cattle required vast amounts of land in order to obtain sufficient forage. The need to cover distances greater than a person on foot could manage gave rise to the development of the horseback-mounted vaquero. During the 16th Century, the Conquistadors and other Spanish settlers brought their cattle-raising traditions as well as both horses and domesticated cattle to the Americas, starting with their arrival in what today is Mexico and Florida. The traditions of Spain were transformed by the geographic, environmental and cultural circumstances of New Spain, which later became Mexico and the Southwestern United States. In turn, the land and people of the Americas also saw dramatic changes due to Spanish influence. The arrival of horses was particularly significant, as equines had been extinct in the Americas since the end of the prehistoric ice age. However, horses quickly multiplied in America and became crucial to the success of the Spanish and later settlers from other nations. The earliest horses were originally of Andalusian, Barb and Arabian ancestry, but a number of uniquely American horse breeds developed in North and South America through selective breeding and by natural selection of animals that escaped to the wild. The Mustang and other colonial horse breeds are now called “wild” but in reality are feral horses — descendants of domesticated animals.

As English-speaking traders and settlers expanded westward, English and Spanish traditions, language and culture merged to some degree. Before the MexicanAmerican War in 1848, New England merchants who travelled by ship to California encountered both hacendados and vaqueros, trading manufactured goods for the hides and tallow produced from vast cattle ranches. American traders along what later became known as the Santa Fe Trail had similar contacts with vaquero life. Starting with these early encounters, the lifestyle and language of the vaquero began a transformation which merged with English cultural traditions and produced what became known in American culture as the ‘cowboy’. By the 1880s, the expansion of the cattle industry resulted in a need for additional open range. Thus many ranchers expanded into the northwest, where there were still large tracts of unsettled grassland. Texas cattle were herded north, into the Rocky Mountain west and the Dakotas. The cowboy adapted much of his gear to the colder conditions, and westward movement of the industry also led to intermingling of regional traditions from California to Texas, often with the cowboy taking the most useful elements of each.
Natalie Portman starrer Jane Got a Gun tells the story of a woman’s quest of defending her ailing husband. Panic strikes Jane Hammond when she sees her outlaw husband return to their farm with bullet wounds. Expecting the situation to worsen, she brings her daughter to safety and travels to the home of her ex-love interest, who may be her only hope in helping defend her husband against a vengeful criminal and his gang of killers in the Old West.
Remake of the 1960 blockbuster, The Magnificent Seven, is scheduled to release in September this year. The story revolves around seven gunmen who gradually come together to help a poor village against a band of outlaws in Mexico. Desperate townspeople hire the seven American gunslingers to battle the ruthless industrialist.
Set in 1872, this brooding Western, Forsaken is about an embittered gunslinger who attempts to make amends with his estranged father whilst their community is besieged by ruthless land grabbers. John Henry returns to his hometown in hopes of repairing his relationship with his father, after abandoning his gun and reputation as a quick-draw killer. A local gang is terrorising the locality and he is the only one who can stop them.

3 Mustang-runners or Mesteñeros were cowboys and vaqueros who caught, broke and drove Mustangs to market in Mexico, and later American territories of what is now Northern Mexico, Texas, New Mexico and California. They caught the Mustangs that roamed the Great Plains and the San Joaquin Valley of California, and later in the Great Basin, from the 18th century to the early 20th century.
Clothing cowboys wore special apparel that helped them with their jobs. They wore large 10-gallon hats to protect them from the sun and the rain. They wore special cowboy boots with pointed toes that helped them slip in and out of the stirrups when riding a horse. This was especially important if they fell so they wouldn’t get dragged by their horse. Many cowboys wore chaps on the outsides of their legs to help protect from sharp bushes and cacti that their horse may rub up against. Another important piece of clothing was the bandana which could be used to protect them from the dust kicked up by cattle.
The history of women in the west, and women who worked on cattle ranches in particular, is not as well documented as that of men. However, institutions such as the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame have made significant efforts in recent years to gather and document the contributions of women. There are few records mentioning girls or women working to drive cattle up the cattle trails of the Old West. However, women did considerable ranch work, and in some cases ran them. There is little doubt that women, particularly the wives and daughters of men who owned small ranches and could not afford to hire large numbers of outside laborers, worked side by side with men and thus needed to ride horses and be able to perform related tasks.
Hi light
The heyday of the long drive was short. By the early 1870s, rail lines reached texas so the cattle could be shipped directly to the slaughterhouses. Ranchers then began to allow cattle to graze on the open range near rail heads. But even this did not last. The invention of barbed wire by Joseph Glidden ruined the open range. Now farmers could cheaply mark their territory to keep the unwanted steers off their lands. Overproduction caused prices to fall, leading many ranchers out of business. Finally, the winter of 1886-1887 was one of the worst in American history. Cattle died by the thousands as temperatures reached fifty below zero in some parts of the west. The era of the open range was over.
Each spring and fall the cowboys would work on the “roundup”. This was when the cowboys would bring in all the cattle from the open range. Cattle would roam freely much of the year and then the cowboys would need to bring them in. In order to tell what cattle belonged to their ranch, the cattle would have a special mark burned into them called a “brand”.
1. Live each day with courage 2. Take pride in your work 3. Always finish what you start 4. Do what has to be done 5. Be tough, but fair 6. When you make a promise, keep it 7. Ride for the brand 8. Talk less and say more 9. Remember that some things aren’t for sale 10. Know where to draw the line
The most important possession of any cowboy was his horse and saddle. The saddles were often custom made and, next to his horse, was probably the most valuable item a cowboy owned. Horses were so important that horse stealing was considered a hanging offense!

Bear necessities Like any ordinary family member, Stepan eats at the dinner table, watches TV with his parents and does his fair share of household chores. But he’s not your average relative — because he’s a BEAR. Svetlana and Yuriy Panteleenko, from Russia, are loving parents to 23-year-old Stepan, who stands at 7ft tall and weighs over 21 stone. He’s so domesticated that he sits at the dinner table and waters the plants. Stepan gets through more than a bowl of porridge a day and also chows down on around 25kgs of fish, vegetables and eggs. But the sweet-toothed creature’s favourite snack is a can of condensed milk. Svetlana and Yuriy adopted Stepan when he was just three-months-old. According to the couple, that’s why the bear’s temperament is extremely gentle and he can often be found cuddling up to them on the sofa. Fortunately for Stepan, he’s also a football fanatic, so he works off the gut-busting amount of food his parents serve him every day. Svetlana said, “Stepan likes nothing more than to cuddle up with us on the sofa at night while we’re watching television. When we adopted him, he was only three-months-old and had been found by hunters in the forest having lost his mother. He’s got so many talents and loves a picnic. It’s a wonder he doesn’t eat us out of house and home.” MIRROR.CO.UK
The amazing race An Australian man attempted to show off his athleticism by running up an escalator in front of a cheering crowd at a Sydney train station. Instagram user Johnny Liew shared the video of the man, who wore his hair in a mullet, running against the downwardmoving escalator at Kings Cross train station. Members of the crowd on the opposite side of the escalator can be heard shouting words of encouragement to the man as he attempted the feat. After travelling up a section of the escalator and struggling to press onward for a few moments the man ultimately decided to abandon his efforts and rode the escalator down to the bottom. His final decision quickly turned the emotions of the crowd as a collective groan can be heard as he turned around. UPI.COM

People know surprisingly little about snowy owls — including what sparks the iconic Arctic birds’ occasional mass migrations south. That’s one of the main reasons scientists Scott Weidensaul and David Brinker launched Project Snowstorm in 2013, when thousands of owls flew south in a movement known as an ‘irruption’. The project tracks the travels of snowy owls using small GPS transmitters attached to the birds like little backpacks. NPR’s Adam Cole decided to take the idea even further. A video showing the details has been published. It shows Cole’s journey along the route of one snowy owl, a male named Baltimore that had logged 14,000 GPS locations from Maryland to Canada. The video is a step in the right direction toward finding out more about the elusive owl species. HUFFINGTONPOST.COM The red sea A drone has captured footage of more than 70 tiger sharks feeding on a humpback whale off Australia’s west coast. The feeding frenzy, which left a trail of blood across the clear ocean surface, occurred in the state of Western Australia near Shark Bay, known for its large population of tiger sharks. It was filmed by Eco Abrolhos, a tour company, during a cruise along the coast of Western Australia. ‘Feeding frenzy at Shark Bay — Tigers having a whale of a time’, the firm said on its Facebook page. The dead whale was believed to be almost 50-feet long, with an estimated weight of almost 40 tonnes. It is not clear whether the whale was killed by sharks or was already dead. “Some sharks were as big as our boats,” Jay Cox from the tour company said. “We got as close to the sharks as we wanted. It was absolutely amazing.” Western Australia has had a spate of shark attacks in recent years, including numerous fatalities. The attacks led to a controversial trial cull by the state in 2014, in which authorities killed about 70 sharks. Mr Cox said the sharks which fed on the whale “weren’t at all aggressive” and did not threaten the two small tour boats which viewed the incident. TELEGRAPH.CO.UK Just keep swimming A diver, Tim Samuel, took an incredible photo of a fish trapped inside a jellyfish, which it then steered around the sea. While free diving in Australia’s Byron Bay, Samuel found the fish had somehow managed to swim inside the jellyfish and then was unable to see itself out. “He was trapped in there but controlled where the Jellyfish was moving,” said Samuel in his Instagram post. “The fish was able to propel the jellyfish forward and controlled its movement to an extent,” he added. The jellyfish would, however, throw the fish off-balance and they would wobble around and sometimes get stuck doing circles. The photo went viral when the popular Instagram page for ocean enthusiasts shared Samuel’s photograph. Soon, the story was taken up by National Geographic and even CNN interviewed Samuel, inquiring about the odd encounter. The photograph has also made its way to a newspaper in Poland. MIRROR.CO.UK

By Sameen Amer Six years after Tim Burton brought his rendition of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland to the big screen, director James Bobin continues the peculiar tale in Alice Through the Looking Glass. It is a fantasy romp inspired by, but not quite based on, the well-known Lewis Carroll novel. After sailing the high seas, the brave and worldly Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to London, only to find herself forced to choose between giving up her beloved ship and losing her mother’s house. But as luck would have it, once again, she finds her way back to her previous escape Underland, where she is reunited with familiar faces, including the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry), Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas) and the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The story sets its tone through Alices’ Underland friends being worried about the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), who has “grown darker,
friends with loud music on and realised you had no speakers? Or maybe no electricity to power the amplifiers? Worry no more. Use an empty cardboard roll and two paper glasses to make homemade speakers with these simple steps. Step 1: Cut a hole in the shape of your phone in the middle of the roll and place your phone in it. Step 2: Cut holes in either side of the paper glasses, in the shape of the cardboard roll. Fix the roll in the cups, appearing as horns on either side. The sound of the music will echo in the walls of the roll, making it sound as good as actual speakers. Say thanks to science! Fight the bugs One thing we cannot avoid at this time of the year is the buzzing of flies and mosquitoes around us. On top of that, mosquito repellents smell bad enough to give us a headache. Make homemade bug repellent that

Coffee in a cube Have you ever been told it is too hot for coffee? Not anymore! Make easy cold beverage by brewing strong black coffee and pouring it in the ice tray. Freeze it overnight and add the cubes in milk whenever needed. For a better lasting taste, add sugar and a drop of vanilla essence. Get rid of the zit If you are someone with skin problems occurring due to rising temperatures, here is an easy way to get rid of the unwanted zits. Peel garlic, cut the cloves in half and dab the over the zit. This will not only reduce the size of it but if dabbed a few times a day, will make your skin completely spot free.
less dafter” and “denies himself laughter”. To save Hatter from fading away due to his sadness, Alice travels to Time’s (Sacha Baron Cohen) castle and borrows the Chronosphere he possesses to use it to travel back in time and save Hatter’s family from being killed; thereby, saving him while trying “not to break the past, present, or future”. The perfunctory tale serves as an excuse to deliver the backstory of Hatter. Meanwhile, it explores the origin of the sibling rivalry between the White Queen and the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and explaining why the latter is as angry and (literally) big-headed as she is. The lessons that are dispensed along the way are as worn-out as the time travel plot itself. The movie should have been a madcap laugh, filled with joy and whimsy, but the film-makers have robbed this quirky tale of its magic. They produced a dull, predictable slog instead and amplified everything that was annoying about its confusingly successful predecessor. Although the cast could not do much with Linda Woolverton’s flat, lackluster script, some of the actors still tried to make the most of the material they were given. Carter and Cohen easily stand out and provide the most entertaining performances in the film. Wasikowska, who may not seem like the best choice for Alice, is still quite charming as a protagonist. It is also touching to hear the voice of the late Alan Rickman (to whom the film is dedicated) as the caterpillar-turnedbutterfly Absolem. However, Depp is more subdued and does not really have anything memorable to do, although the actor does appear to be trying to deliver a performance. Hathaway, on the other hand, just seems to be going through the motions. There are impressive visuals throughout this colourful film but there is no depth beneath its shiny surface. Ultimately, Alice Through the Looking Glass comes off as nothing more than an attempt to cash-in on the success of Alice in Wonderland (2010), which grossed a whopping $1 billion. It delivers an unnecessary backstory and fails to match the wit and playfulness of the ludicrous tale that inspired it. Rating:

• Sophie Turner was born on February 21, 1996, in Northampton, England. • She was signed up to the Playbox Theatre Company when she was just three years old. • Her amateur-level performances paved the way for her to play the role of a powerful Lord’s young daughter on HBO’s series Game of Thrones. • She had her first big screen role in the 2013 film Another Me. • She’s a natural blonde. In order to play Sansa, Sophie dyes her hair the trademark auburn of a Tully. The dye also bagged her the role of Jean Gray in the recently released X-Men: Apocalypse. • She owns a direwolf in real life. In an awesome example of life imitating art, Sophie’s family adopted the dog who played Sansa’s direwolf on the show. If you recall, Sansa’s wolf, Lady, was killed off early in Season 1 at the command of Cersei Lannister. With the dog out of work and in need of a new home, the Turner family swooped in. • Sophie had a twin who died before
birth so she is always drawn to stories about twins/ doubles such as The Thirteenth Tale and Another Me, two films she’s already starred in. • Her favourite actors from her generation are Hailee Steinfeld, Saoirse Ronan, Jennifer Lawrence and Miles Teller. • She is good friends with actress Maisie Williams. • She can rap and beat-box. • Sophie is a die hard Hannibal and Breaking Bad fan. • Of all the animals she comes in contact with, Sophie happens to be allergic to horses, which sometimes hinders her on the set of Game of Thrones. • She starred in a Bastille music video. The hit debut album Bad Blood of the famous British rock band Bastille starred Turner in the hit single Oblivion. At a demolition derby arena, she lipsyncs the song that was originally sung by Dan Smith. She always had a love for music and said she can’t even survive for five minutes without music.
