Hi light

Do you feel that you’ve been told off for eating a lot of junk food lately? A good way to keep your eating habits in check is to acquaint yourself with the food pyramid. It’s a food guide that shows us how different food groups are separated. The pyramid also guides us about the number of items from each group that should be a part of our daily diet. Once we get to know these things striking a balance becomes easy. The pyramid has six layers. Each layer comes with the number of items we should eat from each category every day.

The first layer is for foods like chocolate, candy, chips and other junk food. We should choose one item from this layer each day.

The second layer is for proteins like beef, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans and peas. Protein builds up, maintains and replaces the tissues in your body. We should include two items from this layer in our daily diet.

The third layer is made up of dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt. Dairy is one of the most important food groups and every day we should add three items from it in our daily food intake.

The fourth layer is made up of fruit. We need to take at least two items from this layer every day. A good idea for increasing your fruit intake is to drink a lot of smoothies.

Another vital part of our daily diet is water. Although it’s not included in the pyramid a healthy lifestyle requires us to drink at least six to eight glasses of water each day.

The fifth layer consists of vegetables, another vital layer. We should ensure that we include at least three items from this category into our daily diets.

The sixth layer is made up of cereal, bread, tortillas and pasta. This layer provides us with the highest amount of fibre. We should include six items from this layer in our daily diet.

Hi light

Since you spend a long time at school it’s important to eat something while you’re there to keep your energy levels up. But the school canteen does not always have the best lunch options; they usually sell chips packets and biscuits which are neither filling nor healthy. It’s important to develop the habit of packing yourself a lunch-box every

day for school. You should ask your parents to help you pack your lunch and together you could come up with some creative ideas. The best idea is to slice some fruits and squeeze some lemon juice on them to keep them fresh. There are also a lot of different sandwiches that can be prepared in a no time. For example a cheese or egg sandwich. One great idea is to make a weekly plan for you lunch-box and sticking it on your fridge. Try packing lunches for a week and you’ll feel the difference yourself.

Do I really have to eat vegetables with every meal, even breakfast? The answer is no, but aim at eating items from a variety of food groups during each meal. And if your breakfast doesn’t include a vegetable, consider eating one at snack time. Is it okay to have a snack? Yes it’s okay to snack but it is important to learn how to control your portion sizes and limit the number of snacks per day. It is also vital to know the difference between being hungry and being bored.

After all this talk about packing a healthy lunch, you must be excited to try some recipes for lunch. Here is a recipe forr an unusual, yummy and healthy sandwich.

How do I keep track of my water consumption? That’s easy. Keep a water bottle with you and use a marker to mark portions outside it. Drink only from that bottle and by the end of the day you’ll know exactly how much water you have consumed. Aim to increase your water consumption gradually.

Bread Peanut butter Apple

Is junk food completely off limits? It is okay to have a pack of chips or a slice of cake once in a while. In fact if you ban it completely, you’ll crave it more. The key is to strike a balance and to limit consumption. Make a pact with yourself, saying if you eat a bag of chips now, you’ll have a salad for lunch. It’s a good idea to note down everything you eat in a diary so at the end of the day you have a record of how well you did that day.

2 slices 2 tablespoons grated finely

1. Spread peanut butter on both the slices of bread (only one side). 2. Sprinkle a hearty amount of the grated apple on one of the slices and cover it with the other slice. 3. Make sure you press the slices down firmly so that the sandwich does not fall apart. 4. It’s a good idea to wrap your sandwich in cling film so that it does not dry out before you put it in your lunch-box. SOURCE: ALLRECIPES.COM

Is just keeping track of what I eat just enough to keep me healthy? No, being health conscious is not the only thing that matters, you need to stay active and keep your body moving as well. Play a sport, go for a swim or even a short jog to stay fresh and focused. You don’t have to have a hardcore workout plan but you still should have some healthy outdoor activities.

s Fun Facts about Animals’ Eye Dogs are the only species besides humans known to seek visual cues from another’s eyes. They only do it with humans.

Q: Who says sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me? A: A guy who has never been hit with a dictionary.

Black lemurs are thought to be the only primates besides humans to have blue eyes. Chameleons can move their eyes in two different directions at the same time.

Q. Why did the banana go to the hospital? A: Because he wasn’t peeling well.

Camels have three eyelids, to protect their eyes from sand blowing in the desert. Some lizards squirt blood out of their eyes as protection against predators.

Q: Why can’t you tell a joke while standing on ice? A: Because it might crack up.

Shark corneas are similar to human corneas, which is why they are used in human transplants. A scallop has roughly 100 eyes around the edge of its shell to detect predators.

Q: What do postal workers do when they’re angry? A: They stamp their feet.

Snakes have two sets of eyes — one set used to see, and the other to detect heat and movement. They also don’t have eyelids, just a thin membrane covering the eye. A dragonfly has 30,000 lenses in its eyes, assisting it with motion detection and making it very difficult for predators to kill.

Q: What starts with E, ends with E and only has one letter? A: An envelope.

The largest eye on the planet belongs to the colossal squid and measures around 27cm across.

Did you know? Wind energy Did you know wind energy is one of the best sources of alternative energy? Wind is the movement of air from high pressure areas to low pressure areas. It is caused by uneven heating of the earth’s surface. Hot air rises up and cool air flows in to take its place. Winds will always exist as long as solar energy exists. Wind is a primary source of renewable energy. Human civilisations have harnessed wind power for thousands of years. The first windmills were created in 2000 BC in China. Early forms of wind mills were used to crush grain or pump water. Modern wind turbines are far more complex structures and are used to create electricity. The best part about wind mills is that they do not produce any pollutants or harmful emissions during operation. Unlike other forms of energy, wind energy requires virtually no water during production. Another great thing about wind turbines is that they can be erected offshore and send energy back to land. Wind energy is harnessed by wind turbines which are as high as 20-story buildings and have three blades, each 60 meters long. They resemble giant airplane propellers mounted on a stick. Large turbines can harness energy to power as many as 600 homes. A small turbine in the backyard can easily power a small business or a home. A wind farm is a collection of wind turbines in the same location, it can be built to trap wind energy in large quantities. European countries tend to utilise wind energy more than other countries because of their favourable climatic conditions. Germany leads all other countries in terms of the amount of wind energy that is produced per year. Some countries use wind turbines to supply up to 20% of their electricity needs.

Angry badger A “crazy” badger has besieged a luxury hotel in Stockholm, Sweden, blocking the entrance and stopping frightened guests from leaving. Police were forced to intervene in the unexpected crisis, which unfolded at the Radisson Blu Waterfront early in the morning, on March 7th. The angry animal was caught on CCTV footage, pacing outside the hotel and charging towards the doors as trapped businessmen watched it from behind the glass. “A crazy or stressed-out badger is preventing the staff and clients at a major hotel from leaving their cars and from picking up their bags,” a Swedish Police statement said. “The stressed animal was refusing to leave the place. The police called in the local wildlife services to settle the problem.” The badger appeared shortly after 5am and four hours later, police updated their website saying it had “chosen to leave”. The police authorities commented that the badger was irritable because it had recently woken up from hibernation. INDEPENDENT. CO.UK

Unusual attraction at hotel The sleek RedDot Hotel in Taichung city, Taiwan, has installed a 30-metre long spiral slide that cost a whopping £100,000 to install. The slide spirals from the second floor to the first floor. General Manager Steven Wu who designed the slide, admitted that the hotel faced many difficulties while trying to install the slippery attraction. It was in four segments when it was transported to the hotel, five craftsmen had declined the offer to create the slide before finally finding someone ready to take on the challenge. The installation itself was a big feat of engineering, but was worth the effort as every time passengers side down, they have the time of their lives. Steven said, “I truly believe that the slide is not simply for fun but rather it is a symbolic object, reserving time and space for travellers.” The spiral slide consists of 102 stainless steel sheets, adding to the boutique feel of the hotel. With the stainless steel and accompanying neon lights, it becomes a tunnel which brings back memories of childhood. The slide is not the only unusual attraction in the hotel. The place has many unique pieces of furniture and ornaments, including a barber chair in the main lobby. MIRROR.CO.UK

Dead python investigation

The reticulated python was found floating in a canal close to Norden Bridge in Rishton, Lancashire, by walkers last week. A reptile expert went to the scene and recovered the snake, which measured over 16 feet 5 inches. The python is believed to be 12 to 15 years old and could have been living in the wild for a number of days before it died. A post-mortem examination found signs of respiratory disease that could have contributed to its death. Police are investigating how the python came to be in the canal and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Experts believe that a python of this size could have been capable of attacking a person so it is fortunate that no one suffered any serious harm. There are specific offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and Animal Welfare Act in relation to releasing a python, therefore the matter is a serious one. The police are considering the possibility that the python may have outgrown its home and was therefore dumped in the canal. ITV.COM/

Thoughtful young boy A thoughtful boy named Oliver penned an adorable note to a postman who he thought was missing out on receiving letters. His mother posted a photo of the postcard addressed to the postman online, with the caption, “My kid thought the mailman should get post too.” The youngster clearly realised that it must be tough for postmen who spend hours delivering thousands of letters every day without ever seeing one addressed to them. He decided to do something about it with the note, which read, “To Mailman. Don’t send this to anybody. This is yours. Sincirilly (sincerely), Olivier.” His mother said the postman shook his head in disbelief when he received it, but was clearly delighted as he walked away chuckling. The photo has attracted hundreds of comments online sparking some bizarre conversation threads between some users. TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

Before the sunset Asim and Adnan were twin brothers, who lived on the outskirts of their town with their father. Although their father was not wealthy, he was very wise. He always tried to teach his sons valuable life fe lessons through small examples. Often he watched as Asim tried to grab the bigger share of mangoess or better-looking clothes to wear. On the other hand, Adnan never complained, he just let things be the way they were. Knowing that greed could be a nuisance, their father decided to teach Asim a lesson. On the weekend when the boys were home their father said, “Come here my boys, I think it’s time we find out which one of you is stronger and smarter.” The boys looked excited, their father continued, “Both of you shall leave the house and start walking through the fields, from every field you cross, you should pick the fruit or vegetable grown there, the one who picks fruits and vegetables from more fields, gets a prize.” The boys started to walk out the door ready to get started, when the father said, “There is one more rule, you have to return before the sun sets.” Soon the boys were out in the fields, picking the fruits and vegetables field by field until it was evening. Adnan, remembering what his father had said urged his brother to turn back but Asim did not listen, he was adamant to visit the next field and pick mushrooms before he returned. When Adnan saw that there was no way his brother would listen to him, he left Asim to his own devices and started walking back home. He got there in time and told his father what transpired between him and his brother in the fields. The father did not utter a word, he just kept his gaze fixed on the door. As the sun set, Asim was still picking up the mushrooms, happy that he would win the game and be awarded with the prize. Once he was done, he started walking back home and realised that he couldn’t see properly in the dark. Soon reality began to set in and he found himself to be lost in the field. He started to feel scared, when he saw a light bobbing towards him in the dark. He started walking towards it and soon recognised his father’s silhouette. As they approached each other, Asim threw his sack on the ground and hugged his father. “I was so scared”, he whimpered and began to cry. His father patted his son on the head and said, “Now you realise how harmful greed can be? In trying to win the prize by picking a few extra mushrooms, you lost your way home.” That day Asim vowed never to be greedy again and learnt to be content with his fair share.

Book Review Horrid Henry Horrid Henry is a series of books by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross. It’s a series of stories revolving around a completely horrid boy who loves doing unimaginable and horrible things. He throws food, snatches things, pushes, shoves and pinches. He has a younger brother called Perfect Peter, who happens to be an extremely perfect boy. Peter always does good deeds. He says, “Please” and “Thank you”, he loves vegetables and refuses cake and never ever picks his nose, but he is also the reason why Henry often gets into trouble. Henry wears a blue T-shirt with a yellow stripe, blue jeans and green sneakers. Leader of the Purple Hand Gang, he continuously exposes Peter to malicious verbal abuse, domineering him and deceiving him continuously. Henry’s primary interests consist of violent programming and monsters. He has a short temper and is often rude to his parents. It is made obvious to the readers that the parents actually favour Peter over Henry. They often try to discipline Henry through a number of different punishments, most of which don’t work. When things don’t go Henry’s way he often makes plans to play pranks on people who get in his way. Henry’s Great Aunt Greta thinks that Henry is a little girl called Henrietta, despite being told otherwise countless times. This is why she often becomes the target of many of Henry’s pranks. Among his closest playmates are similarly arrogant children, such as Rude Ralph. Henry viciously hates Moody Margaret and frequently plots against her. However, he does care about Peter’s safety occasionally, showing that he isn’t completely devoid of compassion. Each Horrid Henry book comes with four horrible, yet funny stories. There are currently 26 books in the series. Do you have a favourite book or movie you would like us to review? Write to us at hifive@tribune.com.pk and tell us all about it.

You will need: • Water • Microwave-safe measuring cup • Microwave • Five small cups • A clear glass to display your rainbow • A wide spoon • Red, orange, yellow, green and purple Skittles

What to do:

Ingredients: Plain chocolate cake Condensed milk Skewers Milk Butter Chocolate

1/2 cake 4 tablespoons 6 to 13 75 ml 1 tablespoon 125 grammes

Method: • • • •

• • • • • • •

Break the cake into tiny pieces in a bowl. Add warm condensed milk into the bowl. Use your hands to bind the mixture together. Start making balls out of the sticky mixture and place them in a plate. Make sure the cake balls are not too big or the skewers will not be able to support their weight. Once all the cake balls are ready, stick the skewers into them, making sure that the balls don’t crack and crumble. Ask an elder to help you melt chocolate and butter together. Once the two have completely melted, add sugar and keep stirring. When the chocolate sauce starts to thicken, take it off the heat and let it cool down. Now carefully dip the cake balls in the sauce using the skewers. Make sure the skewers don’t get dirty. Dust the cake balls with sprinkles and refrigerate for 45 minutes to set. Your cake-pops are now ready.

Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.

1. Warm a cup of water in the microwave for about 30 seconds. (Ask an adult for help with this step.) 2. Put 2 tablespoons of warm water into each of the five cups. 3. Cup 1 will be red: Add 2 red Skittles. 4. Cup 2 will be orange: Add 4 orange Skittles. 5. Cup 3 will be yellow: Add 6 yellow Skittles. 6. Cup 4 will be green: Add 8 green Skittles. 7. Cup 5 will be purple: Add 10 purple Skittles. 8. Allow the Skittles to dissolve in the cups for 1 hour. (It may take longer for them to dissolve. Using warm water will help.) Remove or ignore the waxy film that will float on the surface. 9. When the candies are entirely dissolved, begin with the purple cup. Pour the purple water into the clear glass. 10. Use the backside of a spoon with the tip touching the side of glass to carefully add each new layer of color, beginning with green. Slowly pour the green water over the backside of the spoon so the green water rests on top of —instead of mixing with — the purple water. 11. Repeat with the rest of the colours, in this order: yellow, orange, red. 12. Your rainbow won’t last forever so enjoy it while it lasts! What is happening: Plain water is less dense than water mixed with other ingredients, such as dissolved candy (sugar). In this experiment, you dissolved different amounts of candy in water. The water that contains only two dissolved candies will float on top of the water mixtures that contain four, six, eight, and 10 dissolved candies. Why? The water mixtures that are less dense, as in, have fewer candies, will float on top of the layers that are denser.
