When we talk about the greatest fighters in the world, be it myth or fact, Ninjas and Samurai are always mentioned. Vicious as they may be, by no means are the only fighters and warriors who once existed. We took it upon ourselves to compile a list of some of the other great warrior nations and cultures in this week’s HiFive.

Of all the greatest ancient warriors — the Romans were perhaps the most pragmatic. The Roman military took whatever worked and gradually made it into their own. A Roman legion normally indicates the basic ancient Roman army unit recruited specifically from Roman citizens. The organisation of legions varied greatly over time but they were typically composed of up to 5,400 soldiers. They were the backbone of the Roman army that led to an empire that was unrivalled in terms of size and power. They were usually heavy infantry with armour and a shield modelled after the ancient Greeks. They were masters of the sword and spear combination going along with a shield. They were made up of the wealthiest soldiers that could afford to make the best weapons and armor. Because of the enormous military successes of the Roman Empire, they has long been regarded as the prime ancient model for military efficiency and ability.

“The Mongols had a mission: to conquer everything; dominate everything in their path; destroy everything in their path,” says Jason Ngyuen, an expert on Mongols. The Mongols were the vicious Asian horse warriors who used brute savagery to conquer more territory in the 13th Century then any other empire in history. They dominated Europe and Asia and were most famous for riding on horseback lead by one of the greatest military commanders in history, Genghis Khan. They were highly disciplined and masters in using the bow and arrow on horse back. Their armoury comprised of a variety of bows for reaching a multitude of targets with special ‘howling’ arrows used to disorientate the enemy and cause panic.

The Apachean tribes were historically very strong and strategic, opposing the Spanish and Mexican for centuries. Their warriors were like the ninjas of America. They are still legendary for their fierceness, relentlessness, and the hardship of their upbringing. Young Apache warriors were tested almost to the point of destruction. Boys were often trained to go without sleep, to sit for long periods of time without moving or making a sound. They would sneak up behind you and slit your throat without you even knowing. They used primitive weapons made mostly of wood and bone. They were also the greatest knife fighters the world has ever seen and were pretty good with the tomahawk and throwing axe. They terrorised the southwest United States and even the military had trouble beating them. Apache earn the number four spot on the Top 10 Legendary Warrior Cultures of Ancient History list.

The Spartan city-state was without question one of the greatest warrior cultures in human history. It reached the height of its power after defeating rival city-state Athens in the Peloponnesian War. Spartan culture was centred on loyalty to the state and military service. At the age of seven, Spartan boys entered a rigorous state-sponsored education, military training and socialisation programme. Their culture was all about war and training men for war their entire lives. They had a saying: “come back with the shield or on top of it” which means don’t come back unless you are victorious. They were masters of the shield and spear combination. Any weakness was intolerable to the Spartans. Their warriors were feared and marvellFed at among all the Greek city-states of the time, including the Spartan women.

Viking warrior were highly feared across Europe for their brutal attack, while their weapon of choice was a battle-axe. Well know for their close quarter fighting style and berserkers, most Viking warriors were modestly armoured with only the king’s guard usually having chain mail. They were big and mean and used their axes, swords and spears expertly in the conquering of cities. Even their religion was about war and they believed when you died in battle you fought once again in a never-ending battle. They were all you would want in a soldier and proved it on the battlefield by destroying all in their path. The Viking fighting style was based on rapid attacks. With their home-made clothing and weapons they would rely on their quick and ferocious attack style to ensure success. This all added up to make it easy to see why the Vikings had a fearsome reputation within Europe.

Even though it started with a warm first instalment that was populated with lovable, amusing characters, the Ice Age series has since been losing its charm with each new addition to the franchise. As Blue Sky Studios prepares to release the fifth film in the series this summer, they have decided to whet our Ice Age appetite with a television special. The short episode titled The Great Egg-Scapade celebrates two springtime occasions: The main arc revolves around Easter while a side plot focuses on April Fools’ Day. Set after the events of the fourth film Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Egg-Scapade finds the prehistoric gang dealing with the consequences of one of clumsy sloth Sid’s (voiced by John Leguizamo) latest goofs, while opossums Crash (Seann William Scott) and Eddie (Josh Peck) try, very unsuccessfully, to prank young mammoth Peaches (Keke Palmer). After nurturing “three beautiful dinosaur eggs” in a previous instalment, the sloth comes up with the idea of an egg-sitting service, much to the concern of mammoth Manny (Ray Romano) and saber-toothed cat Diego (Denis Leary) who are certain this enterprise will not end well. Sid convinces a bird mom (Taraji P Henson) to entrust her precious, soon-to-hatch egg to him. At her recommendation, other animals also decide to avail the service, and Sid soon has a dozen eggs in his care. But, predictably, he falls asleep on the job, giving pirate bunny Squint (Seth Green) — who is seeking revenge for a prior slight — a chance to steal the eggs and hold them hostage while he demands that the group build him a new ship. It is thereby up to Manny and the gang to rescue the eggs and reunite them with their worried parents. With each new Ice Age adventure, it becomes more and more obvious that the studio is eager to capitalise on the brand’s success, but hasn’t really been able to come up with the kind of compelling stories and interesting scripts that would make these outings a must watch for animation fans. In the same vein, this 25-minute special is fun and watchable, but doesn’t really offer anything particularly innovative or memorable. As the proceedings are bombarded with Easter references while the origins of traditions, such as decorated Easter eggs and the Easter bunny, are established, it becomes fairly obvious how the events will unfold. The adventure is lively but predictable, and the zany antics are more likely to please younger viewers. If you aren’t a diehard fan of the franchise, then you won’t miss much if you skip this special, and wait instead for the fifth, full-length film, Ice Age: Collision Course, which comes out this July. But if you can’t resist anything that bears the Ice Age title or simply love Easter specials, then The Great Egg-Scapade will help you while away half an hour and offer a few chuckles along the way. Something strange is afoot Authorities in the Wandsworth borough of London were tickled when an officer photographed a giant foot on wheels cruising along the sidewalk. The police shared the photo of a man wearing a silver suit and helmet standing inside the heel of the massive foot. A woman in a captain’s suit is seen standing on the base of the vehicle. Police didn’t have to kick in any doors to learn the backstory in this case. A few hours after police put the call out, the Twitter account for the Wandsworth Fringe Festival shared a front-view photo of the foot and its brave commander. The festival’s Ministry of Silly Ideas built the giant foot to promote this year’s event, which starts on May 6. Footage of the foot cruising around town and playing a little music was also shared on Twitter. There were no reports regarding whether the giant foot smelled as bad as one imagine. It certainly looks a bit like another famous British foot. HUFFINGTONPOST. COM

Nautical allure Shipwreck hunter and underwater photographer Tobias Friedrich snapped the remains of ships, planes and aircraft carriers while visiting countries including Papua New Guinea, Malta, Corsica, Egypt, Jordan and Barbados. The 35 year old from Wiesbaden, Germany, explained that he got a thrill from exploring wrecks. Friedrich said, “Diving into a wreck is like diving into a cave. There is usually no direct way out to the surface so you need to be sure that your dive equipment is working and that you have enough air in your tank before you enter. It can be very difficult and dangerous. Diving with at least one buddy is really important inside a wreck.” Friedrich meticulously plans each dive to ensure he captures the wrecks, using a wide-angle lens, at their most striking. He said, “I always like to explore new wrecks, so one time in my life I want to dive the wrecks of the Chuuk Lagoon in Micronesia and the Bikini Atoll because it’s been said that these are the best wreck dives in the world.” Friedrich has been taking underwater photographs since 2007 and admitted that his favourite shots include planes. A bumpy ride A Texas-bound American Airlines flight was forced to return to Seattle after striking at least one bird during takeoff, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport said. The incident, which occurred shortly after 3:30pm local time, severely damaged the nose of the Airbus 321. There were no reports of injuries among the 150 passengers and six crew members. American Airlines said in a statement that Flight 2310, bound for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, returned to Seattle “due to a bird strike, which struck the nose of the aircraft.” Airline spokesman Ross Feinstein said the plane “landed safely and taxied to the gate. Our maintenance team is currently evaluating the aircraft,” Feinstein added. Passengers were transferred to a different aircraft for the flight to Texas. The pilot told air traffic controllers, “Looks like we hit some birds after takeoff. We’re gonna need to go back and have the airplane looked at.” HUFFINGTONPOST.COM

Unlikely encounter The ‘alien’ beast, complete with elongated proboscis, has been filmed in seas off the east coast of China. With its two bulging teeth, it is unlike any creature the travellers have seen before so they have turned to local wildlife experts for help. The video now being shared tens of thousands of time on Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo shows the grey sea creature with smooth, glossy skin, which its captors described as being “dolphin-like”. However, the animal found in the sea near Zhoushan City, did not have a fin, and local fishermen did not hide their shock and even fear at seeing the bizarre marine animal for the first time. The animal had apparently been caught in the fishermen’s large nets and had reportedly already died when it floated to the surface and was then spotted by stunned locals. Reports said the animal was hauled back to shore and local wildlife experts were called in to identify the strange catch. Experts say, the animal was most likely a member of the beaked whale family. The animal was also most likely a young whale, as the species is capable of growing several times larger. The beaked whale is rarely seen in Chinese seas and is not considered to be endangered. 6 • Rub nail polish remover on your nails even if they don’t have polish on them. Any excess oil on your nails will prevent the polish from sticking and can result in quick chipping. And let’s face it: We’re not about that life. And if you’re out of nail polish remover and your nails are bare, quickly dip them in a mixture of water and white vinegar. • Lightly buff your nails to smooth bumps so that the polish will lay flat. Even small dips and dents in your nails can warp the polish and cause cracking. Give them a light buff to even them out. • Keep your nails at or below the tips of your fingers. Shorter nails mean less drama and a longerlasting mani. • Paint two basecoat layers: One on the top half of your nail and the second coat over the entire nail. • Roll the polish bottle between your hands. This warms up the polish so it’ll spread more easily. • Apply multiple thin coats instead of one thick coat. A thick coat of nail polish will only dry at the top layer, leaving your manicure vulnerable to smudges. • If you’re going for a neon look, use white polish as your base. The white base will bring out the colour of your neon polish without having a tonne of polish layers. • After you layer on your polish, don’t wait too long to apply your top coat. • Even though your nails might feel dry to the touch, your polish can take up to 12 hours to fully harden. Heat can interfere with the ‘curing’ process, which will result in smudging and cracking. Just be sure to wash your hands in cold water instead of hot. • Apply a thin layer of top coat on your nails every two or three days.

Ingredients: Method: • Garlic, minced

1 tbsp

• Onion, chopped

1/2 cup

• Ground beef

1 lb

• Marinara sauce

1 1/2 cup

• Shredded mozzarella cheese 8 oz • Salt and pepper

to taste

• Flour

1 1/2 cup

• Panko bread crumbs

2 cups

• Eggs

4

• Lasagna noodles

8 to 10

• Oil for frying

3 to 4 cups

• Coat a 10-inch frying pan with olive oil. Add minced garlic and chopped onion, stirring consistently until lightly browned. Add ground beef and stir to mix with onion and garlic. Once beef has begun to brown and water has been released drain water and fat then continue cooking until beef begins to brown and become tender and crispy. Add marinara sauce and mix together. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste, remove heat and add mozzarella. Stir until mozzarella binds to mixture. • While the mixture cools boil four cups of water in a medium pot and add lasagna noodles, lay them in across each other in a star formation so they do not bind together, stir regularly. After eight to 10 minutes drain pasta and allow to cool for five minutes. Cut noodles down to 3- to 4-inch slices and place mixture inside and roll. Place poppers in freezer for 12 minutes. • Dip poppers in egg wash flour and bread crumbs, then once more in the egg wash and bread crumbs. Freeze for additional 12 minutes. • Heat 3–4 inches of canola oil at medium heat in a pot for 15 minutes, test by splashing drops of water into oil (it should sizzle). Place poppers in oil three or four at a time until they are golden brown on all sides, allow them to cool for 10–12 minutes and enjoy with marinara sauce to dip!

Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.
