The Naruto Saga Naruto is one of the most famous manga and anime series created by Masashi Kishimoto. The series has a complex story. The tale is told in two parts, the first of which has 220 episodes and the second has 415 episodes and more to air. The series takes place in a fictional universe where countries use their ninja armies to conquer and rule lands. The series’ storyline follows the adventures of a group of young ninjas from the village of Konohagakure.
The Story Twelve years before the start of the series, Kurama the nine-tailed demon fox attacked Konohagakure, destroying much of the village and taking many lives. The leader of the village, the Fourth Hokage (leader) sacrificed his life to seal Kurama into a newborn, Naruto Uzumaki. Orphaned by the attack, Naruto was shunned by the villagers, who out of fear and anger viewed him as the Kurama itself. Though the Third Hokage outlawed speaking about anything related to Kurama, the children inherited the same animosity towards Naruto. In his thirst to be acknowledged, Naruto becomes part of Team 7 to train to become the next geat Hokage.
The Characters NAruto Naruto Uzumaki is the main character from the series. He is often ridiculed by the Konohagakure villagers, as he is the host of Kurama, the nine-tailed fox that attacked Konoha. He compensates for this with his cheerful and boisterous personality, vowing to never give up on any goal he sets. Naruto has ambitions of becoming Hokage, the leader of Konohagakure, in order to gain the villagers’ respect and be able to protect them and the world. Over the course of the series, Naruto befriends many foreign and Konoha people and has a significantly positive impact on their lives to the point where, by the middle of Part II, he is seen as an international hero.
Sakura Sakura Haruno is the sole female member of Team 7. As a child, Sakura was taunted by other children because of her large forehead but she was comforted by Ino Yamanaka, who became her best friend at the time. However when the two continued to grow they became increasingly distant. During the early episodes of Part I, Sakura always seems to be annoyed with Naruto and always striving to impress Sasuke, who in turn keeps trying to avoid her. Later in the series, a steadfast friendship is born between Sakura and Naruto.
Kakashi Kakashi Hatake is the leader of Team 7 and the sensei (mentor) to Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. Kakashi is an easygoing person but he keeps all the members of Team 7 in check. Kakashi treats his leadership position with a mysterious, detached manner and is consistently late to meetings as a result. The story reveals that Kakashi was trained by Naruto’s father during the Third Great Ninja War and obtained his Sharingan eye from one of his teammates and later enemy Obito Uchiha.

Sasuke
Orochimaru
Sasuke Uchiha is Naruto’s rival during the beginning of Part I. Sasuke is one of the few remaining members of the Uchiha clan along with his brother, Itachi Uchiha, who killed the rest of their family. Because of this, Sasuke’s sole desire is to kill his brother, and he develops a cold and withdrawn personality. He often treats people as means to achieving ends and nothing more, but that was not always the case. In the beginning of the series, Sasuke is seen protecting his team mates even at the risk of his life. It is when he combats with his brother and is defeated that everything changes. Sasuke then leaves the village to seek more power from criminal organisations, subsequently becoming a major villain in Part II.
Orochimaru is one of Konohagakure’s legendary Sannin (ninja). With a lifeambition to learn all of the world’s secrets, Orochimaru seeks immortality so that he may live long enough to accomplish his task. After being caught red-handed performing unethical experiments on his fellow citizens in persuit of immortality, he was banished from the village. For many years, Orochimaru sought the village’s destruction in order to take revenge and demonstrate what he had learnt. After several apparent deaths in the pursuit of his goals, Orochimaru realises that his approach is flawed because of Kabuto Yakushi, his former associate. He later starts taking interest in his former apprentice Sasuke.
Kurama Kurama, more commonly known as the Nine-Tails, is one of the nine tailed beasts. For centuries, the ninjas hunted these foxes down to use them as tools of war. As a result the foxes learnt to hate humanity. This was why Kurama destroyed Naruto’s village. After being sealed into Naruto Uzumaki, Kurama continues to maintain its negative opinions about the world. Naruto, however, persistently treats the fox with respect, causing it to overturn its views about humanity.
Madara Ma adara Uchih Uchiha ha Itachi Uchiha Itachi Uchiha was a prodigy of Konohagakure’s Uchiha clan. He became an international criminal after murdering his entire clan, sparing only his younger brother Sasuke. He afterwards joined the international criminal organisation known as Akatsuki, whose activity brought him into frequent conflict with Konoha and its ninjas — including Sasuke, who sought to avenge their family. After his death, however, Itachi’s motives were revealed to be more complicated than they seemed. We find out that his actions were always in the interest of his brother and village.
Madara Uchiha was a legendary leader of the Uchiha clan. He founded Konohagakure alongside his rival, Hashirama Senju, with the intention of beginning an era of peace. When the two couldn’t agree on how to achieve that peace, they fought for control of the village, a conflict that ended in Madara’s death. He rewrote his death and went into hiding to work on his plans to end world conflict. Unable to complete it in his first lifetime, he entrusted his knowledge and plans to Obito Uchiha shortly before his second death. Years later, Madara would be revived, only to see his plans foiled before dying one final time.

Fun Facts about Icebergs An iceberg is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off from a glacier or ice shelf and is floating in open water.
Q. What is a cat’s favourite colour? A. Purrr-ple
Icebergs travel with ocean currents, sometimes smashing up against the shore or getting caught in shallow waters. The word iceberg comes from the Dutch term ‘ijsberg’ which means ‘ice mountain’.
Q. What is the most special part of your body at Christmas? A. Mistle-Toe
Q. What happened when the dog went to the flea circus? A. He stole the show
Glaciers form on land as a result of snow accumulation over thousands of years. Icebergs are created when the edge of a glacier advances into the ocean and breaks off in pieces. Icebergs are really white. This colour is created by white light reflecting off tiny air bubbles trapped in the ice. There are also some antisepticblue overtones to it and a whole spectrum of green where the iceberg descends into the ocean. The biggest part of an iceberg, about seven-eighths of it, is below water. The interior temperature of an iceberg is between -15 and -20 oC.
Q. Why did the Easter Bunny cross the road? A. Because the chicken had his Easter eggs.
Q. What is the problem with twin witches? A. You never know which witch is which.
When iceberg ice melts quickly, the bubbles released from it make a sound like soda water fizzing. Icebergs are also classified by their shape. Tabular icebergs have steep sides and a flat top like a plateau, while non-tabular icebergs include irregular shapes such as rounded tops, spires, sloping sides, and blocks. Wind and water erode icebergs into amazing sculptural shapes.
Did you know? Badminton through the ages Badminton finds its origins in ancient civilisations of Europe and Asia. The ancient game known as ‘Battledore and Shuttlecock’ originated more than 2,000 years ago. In the 1600s Battledore and Shuttlecock was an upper class pastime in England and many European countries. Battledore and Shuttlecock was simply two people hitting a shuttlecock backwards and forwards with a simple bat as many times as they could without allowing it to hit the ground. A contemporary form of badminton — a game called ‘Poon’, was played in India in the 1800s where a net was introduced and players hit the shuttlecock across the net. British officers in the mid 1800s took this game back to England and it was introduced as a game for the guests of the Duke of Beaufort at his stately home ‘Badminton’ in Gloucestershire, England where it became popular. In March 1898, the first Open Tournament was held at Guildford while the first All England Championships were held the following year. Then in 1934, the International Badminton Federation was formed, with initial members including England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and India joining as an affiliate in 1936. The first major International Badminton Foundation tournament was the Thomas Cup in 1948. Badminton was introduced as a Commonwealth Games programme sport in Kingston Jamaica in 1966 and has been part of every Commonwealth Games programme since then. Initially all five disciplines were included — singles, doubles and mixed doubles, with the Teams Event included in the programme in later Commonwealth Games. Badminton is a relatively new Olympic Games sport. After being a demonstration sport in Munich in 1972, badminton became an Olympic sport in Barcelona in 1992, with the singles and doubles disciplines introduced for the first time in the Olympic Games. First warm-blooded fish The opah fish generates heat throughout its entire body by the constant flapping of its wing-like pectoral fins, according to a report in the journal Science. The deepwater predator maintains an average muscle temperature of about 4-5 oC above the surrounding water temperature. Its unique structure prevents the heat from being lost, said researchers from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service. Other fish, including tuna and some sharks, are capable of warming specific parts of their bodies which allows them to forage for food in the chilly depths, but they must return to the surface to protect vital organs from the effects of the cold. Endotherms are warm-blooded animals such as birds and mammals that generate their own heat and maintain a body temperature independent of their environment. Most fish are categorised as ecotherms along with other cold-blooded species such as amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates. The opah is a rusty reddish colour, has white spots and bright red fins. It weighs up to 200lb and is about the size of a car tyre, with an oval body shape. Found in oceans worldwide, the opah spends most of its time at depths of 165 to 1,300ft, hunting fish and squid. Five-year-old Josiah Duncan found one man’s rough appearance so disconcerting, he asked his mother what was wrong. When Ava Faulk explained that he was homeless, Josiah asked, “What does that mean?” He asked many more questions, including “Where is his house? Where is his family? Where does he keep his groceries?” According to Ms Faulk, it was the man’s lack of food which troubled Josiah most during the incident a few weeks ago in Prattville, Alabama. “He didn’t have any food,” Josiah said, who then pleaded with his mother to buy the man some food. Ms Faulk said, “[The homeless] man came in and sat down and nobody really waited on him. So Josiah jumped up and asked him if he needed a menu because you can’t order without one.” The homeless man asked for a hamburger but Ms Faulk insisted he could have whatever he wanted. The five-year-old then wished to say grace loudly before the man began eating, moving the restaurant with 11 other customers to tears. Ms Faulk said, “The man cried. I cried. Everybody cried.” TELEGRAPH.CO.UK
The panda diet The mystery of why giant pandas are forced to spend 14 hours a day eating has finally been solved — they can only digest around 17 per cent of the bamboo they swallow. Researchers found their gut bacteria are not the type for efficiently breaking down bamboo. In fact they are built to eat meat. The giant panda actually harbours a carnivorelike gut. Pandas are one of the most endangered species on Earth, with only 1,600 animals left in the wild. The study’s lead author, Zhihe Zhang, director of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China, said, “Unlike other plant-eating animals that have successfully evolved, anatomically specialised digestive systems to efficiently deconstruct fibrous plant matter, the giant panda still retains a gastrointestinal tract typical of carnivores. The animals also do not have the genes for plant-digesting enzymes in their own genome. This combined scenario may have increased their risk for extinction.” Study co-author Doctor Xiaoyan Pang, an associate professor in the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said, “This result is unexpected and quite interesting, because it implies the giant panda’s gut microbiota may not have adapted well to its unique diet, and places pandas at an evolutionary dilemma.” The researchers said that giant pandas evolved from bears that ate both plants and meat, and started eating bamboo exclusively about two million years ago. Windscreen viper An oblivious motorist had no idea they had an extra passenger onboard their car — until a huge snake suddenly appeared on their windscreen. The slippery customer had been nesting in the windshield washer reservoir tank when its peaceful sleep was brought to an abrupt end by the car’s engine starting. Disturbed from its unique hiding place, the snake slowly appeared through the car’s outside vents and found itself trapped on the windscreen as the driver was cruising down a motorway. In the video posted online, the snake is seen crawling up the window in an attempt to check out its surroundings, before it eventually gives up and appears to crawl straight back into the tank. The 52 second clip, which was originally posted to YouTube has clocked up more than 63,000 views. MIRROR.CO.UK
The careless goldfish By Mahnaz Mir Janice owned two goldfish that she had named Jim and Jill. Janice was a very good fish keeper. She never forgot to feed the fish before going to school in the morning and she fed them as soon as she was home in the evening. She was also very careful about their health so she had put clean pebbles in the aquarium, a couple of green plants and a fake red coral. Every Sunday, when Janice was at home, she would gingerly take out the fish from the aquarium and slip them in a bowl of clean fresh water. Then she would empty the aquarium, take out the pebbles and scrub them with a sponge until they shone. Sometimes she would put a small treasure chest with the pebbles for the fish to play with and sometimes, she would just drop a coin or two. The lovely aquarium was placed right beside the window and Jim and Jill would spend hours looking outside the window — the green grass, the colourful flowers, the naughty children playing here and there. It was fun for them to watch all those colours and hear all those sounds. But one day a strange thing happened. All the colours from outside the window just disappeared! It seemed as if the whole scene was coloured with white paint. Jim and Jill rubbed their eyes until they began to hurt. “What happened?” they asked each other. A while later they saw some kids running and throwing white balls at each other. Jim looked closely and saw that all the kids were wearing a lot of clothes — jumpers, coats, caps, scarves, gloves and long boots. Jill told Jim it must be snow. “How do you know about snow?” Jim asked her. “I watched it on the weather forecast on TV,” she said. It was Sunday so it meant it was cleaning day for Jill and Jim. Janice did what she did every time — emptied the aquarium and filled it again, but this time she also put a new gadget in it. Jim felt the water in their tank was a bit warmer than before. “I like this water,” he said to Jill, “But I wonder what that is?” he pointed to the new gadget that was making a slight whirring sound. “Do not go near it Jim,” Jill warned him, “You could get hurt.” Jim nodded but he had a plan forming in his head. At night when Jill went to sleep, Jim came closer to the gadget. It had a small fan that turned quickly and made that whirring sound. He went a little closer. Then a little more, then a little more until his fin touched the fan. “Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”. A sound came out of Jim’s fin, he was thrown back and hit the wall of the aquarium and dropped unconscious on the pebbles. Jill woke up with all this noise and went to see what had happened. She could see nothing but then on the black pebble she saw Jim. She swam to him and stroked his face with her fin and he opened his eyes. He stayed still and then said, “I was electrocuted.” Jill did not say anything to him but nursed him to health. Later when Jim was well, Jill scolded him a lot for not listening to her and told him never to fiddle with electronic things. Jim nodded again but this time he knew he had to listen to Jill because he had learnt his lesson. Share your short stories with us. Email them to hifive@tribune.com.pk

Mint and Melon Coolie
Soap powered boat You will need:
Ingredients:
• Styrofoam tray • A tray, bowl or cookie sheet full of water
Melon Mint leaves Water Sugar Lemon juice Ice
1/2 cup, cut into cubes 4 to 5 1/2 glass 1 tbsp 2 tbsp 4 cubes
• Dishwashing liquid • A toothpick
What to do: • Cut the foam tray or cardboard into a boat shape as shown in the picture above. A good size seems to be about two inches long. • Dip the toothpick into the liquid soap and use the toothpick to apply the soap onto the sides of the notch at the back of the boat. • Now carefully place the boat onto the surface of the water and watch it scoot across the water for several seconds — you’ve made a soappowered boat! • To demonstrate the boat again, you will need to rinse out the tray to remove any soap from the previous demonstration.
Method: • Blend the melon cubes and water in a blender. • Add the sugar, lemon juice and mint leaves and blend again. • Toss ice cubes in a tall glass and pour the coolie over it. • Garnish with mint leaves and enjoy.
Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.
How does it work: Soap is a surfactant — that means it breaks down the surface tension of water. As the surface tension is broken, it creates enough of a force to push the lightweight boat across the surface. SOURCE: SCIENCEBOB.COM
