“I was only teasing.” “I didn’t really mean to...” “He made me do it.” “She did it first.” “It was only a bit of fun.” We’ve all made these excuses at one time or another, when joking around with a friend has gone too far and you realise an apology is due. Good-natured teasing is a normal part of any friendship, but when teasing is used to hurt other people’s feelings or put them down in front of everyone else, then it turns into bullying. Bullies are people who hurt other people, either by saying mean things or by resorting to violence. In schools, where different children have to spend time together, bullying can often become a problem, especially for children who are the least bit different. Chances are that everyone reading this has either been bullied or have witnessed someone being bullied in the playground. It is also possible that you yourself have taken part in bullying someone. Since bullying is a problem that can affect lots of children, it is important to understand what it is and what can be done to stop it so that all children feel safe.

Boys, girls, big kids, little kids, smart kids and less smart kids can all be bullies if they do the following things: — They often pick on younger or smaller kids, kids who might be different in some way, or kids who don’t have many friends, such as new kids. — They often have one or two people who hang around with them to help them ‘gang up’ on someone. — They can use teasing, name-calling or blackmail against their target. — They may spread stories or lies about their target. — They may hide, damage or take their target’s things. — They may ignore or not speak to their target and try to get others to do the same. — They may physically hurt others by pushing, tripping, kicking or hitting them.

It is important to know that there is a difference between someone who is in a bad mood on a particular day and therefore snapped at a friend or classmate, and someone who regularly seeks out other children to make fun of them or hurt their feelings. Everybody sometimes says hurtful things without meaning to, but a bully is someone who does this often and who takes pleasure in it. The thing to know about bullies is that they might pick on a classmate to get attention and to entertain others. They might also not be very confident and try to hide this by insulting others, thinking that by making others feel bad they might feel better themselves. They might bully to impress others or to be the centre of attention.

Getting bullied can be a painful experience and can make you feel alone and left out. Here are some things you can do if someone is bullying you: — Tell someone you trust about it. You can tell a parent, a teacher, an older sibling, the principal or older friends. If the person you told cannot help you or does not do anything, find someone else. Never keep bullying a secret. — Try not to let the bully see that you are upset Bullies want to get a reaction out of you, and if you calmly walk away, they won’t have that satisfaction. — Avoid areas where the bully feels comfortable picking on you (for example, places where teahers cannot see you — such as corners of the playground, lonely corridors and behind large furniture in the classroom). — Try to surround yourself with friends and classmates who will stand up for you.

It might be that, for whatever reason, you say mean things to others and make fun of them to entertain others or to get attention. It might also be that you think this will make you popular or get you more friends. The first thing to realise is that hurting someone’s feel-ays. ings is never okay, even if it seems funny or entertaining. And if you have bullied someone in the past, it’s not too late to mend your ways. The best thing about your actions is that they are completely in your control and you can change them if you try. Here are some thingss you can do to stop bullying others: — Whenever you are about to say something about someone else, ask yourself, “Would I like it if someone said this to me?” If the answer is no, don’t say it. Same goes for doing something to others. — You might notice that you tend to bully others when you feel angry, stressed out or frustrated. Upcoming Movies to Watch Out for As 2014 — the year which gave us films like The Lego Movie, Maleficent and How to Train Your Dragon 2 — draws to a close, it is time to look ahead and see what other exciting films are coming our way in the remaining months as well as in 2015. Here are some of the most exciting ones: Big Hero 6 Recently released, this Disney production is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and a 14-year-old boy genius Hiro Hamada and their quest to rid their city of super villains. Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, Big Hero 6 begins when Hiro’s older brother takes him along to the robotics lab at his university, where Hiro meets his brother’s friends as well as a huge, cuddly robot called Baymax. When Hiro’s brother is killed by an evil villain, Hiro teams up with his brother’s friends and Baymax to save their city from destruction. Home In 2015, get ready for a new animated film, Home — this one produced by Dreamworks, the same studio that made Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon. Home is the story of an overly optimistic alien race called Boov which is led by Captain Smek. The Boov are being hunted by their enemy on their home planet so they decide to invade Earth and make it their new home. Convinced they are doing them a favour, they begin to relocate the human race, but one resourceful teenage girl, Tip, manages to avoid capture. While on the run, Tip meets and befriends a banished Boov named Oh, who has accidentally notified the enemies of his whereabouts. Will Tip and Oh save both their races from the alien enemy?

Over the Garden Wall Also just released is this new Cartoon Network animated miniseries, consisting of ten 12-minute episodes telling one whole story. This is possibly the first kids’ animated miniseries ever, and it is wonderful. It is the story of two brothers who one day climb over their garden wall and get lost in a big forest called the Unknown. In order to find their way home, the two must travel across the forest, which is full of magical creatures. They are helped along by Woodsman, a wise, elderly creature, and Beatrice, a bluebird who joins the brothers in order to undo a curse that has affected her whole family. A mixture of fairy tale, adventure series and sibling comedy, Over the Garden Wall is a must-watch.

Inside Out Inside Out is a DisneyPixar animated film about the five emotions — Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness — that live inside a little girl’s head. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions. These five emotions live in her head in Headquarters, the control centre inside Riley’s mind, where they advise her on everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in a new city, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Into the Woods Disney’s Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a musical format. The liveaction film follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel — all tied together by an original story of a baker and his wife who want to start a family but have been cursed by an evil witch, the same witch who wants to teach important lessons to the famous fairy tale characters. Filled with songs, adventure and magic, Into the Woods — slated to be released at the end of 2015 — seems worth waiting for.

Hello Kitty park A new Hello Kitty theme park is set to delight Chinese fans when it opens its doors at the beginning of 2015. Japanese company, Sanrio, who created Hello Kitty in 1974, have joined hands with entertainment design firm, Hettema Group from California, to bring their new park to life. The little white cat with the red bow will be the main feature of the theme park, which is currently under construction in Anji county, in East China’s Zhejiang province. Sanrio already owns two theme parks in Japan — Puroland and Harmonyland — which attract millions of visitors every year. Puroland, which is an indoor theme park based on Japanese cartoon characters, attracts more than 1.5 million visitors every year. Harmoneyland is also based on the famous Sanrio characters, including Hello Kitty, Cinnamon and My Melody. But this new park will exclusively be based on Hello Kitty. According to The Hettema Group website, the new Hello Kitty Park will be “a very special home-awayfrom home for Hello Kitty and all her friends.” DAILYMAIL.CO.UK

First comet landing

The European Space Agency on Wednesday successfully landed a probe on the surface of a comet, something that has never been done before. The comet is called 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It was discovered in 1969 and is quite small. Its nucleus — the solid part of a comet, sometimes called an ‘icy dirtball’ — is only about 2.5 miles or 4 kilometers wide. The comet is 311 million miles from Earth, and traveling through space at more than 34,000 miles an hour. A robot named Philae, which is a lander about the size of a washing machine, and weighs 220 pounds, landed on the comet in a historic event. The landing was achieved by two spacecrafts. The Rosetta craft, which the European Space Agency launched in 2004, has spent the past 10 years travelling to 67P. It has been orbiting the comet since this August. When it got close enough, Rosette launched Philae onto the comet’s surface, where Philae successfully landed. The comet landing is important for future research as it will tell us if a bombardment from comets billions of years ago created the Earth’s oceans and the building blocks of all living things. Stupidity virus A virus that infects human brains and makes us more stupid has been discovered, according to scientists in the US. The algae virus, never observed before in healthy people, was found to affect cognitive functions, including visual processing and spatial awareness. Scientists at Johns Hopkins Medical School and the University of Nebraska stumbled upon it during an unrelated study on throat microbes. The researchers were surprised to discover DNA in the throats of healthy individuals that matched the DNA of a virus known to infect green algae. Dr Robert Yolken, a virologist who led the original study, said, “This is a striking example showing that the ‘innocuous’ microorganisms we carry can affect behaviour and cognition.” Of the 90 participants in the study, 40 tested positive for the algae virus. Those who tested positive performed worse on tests designed to measure the speed and accuracy of visual processing. They also scored lower in tasks designed to measure attention. INDEPENDENT.CO.UK

Tech for the blind Last December, seventh-grader Shubham Banerjee asked his parents how blind people read. His father Neil Banerjee told his son to “Google it.” So Shubham did, and with a few Internet searches he learnt about Braille, the raised-dot writing system used by the blind, and Braille printers, which to the 12-year-old’s shock, cost thousands of dollars. This didn’t seem fair to Shubham, who decided to work on a low-cost Braille printer made out of Legos for his school science fair. Today, Shubham is the founder of business Braigo Labs, which aims to become the first source of low-cost Braille printers. Intel Capital, a big tech company announced this week that it has invested in the teenager’s company, making Shubham the world’s youngest tech entrepreneur to receive venture-capital funding. “It was curiosity,” explained Shubham, now 13 and an eighth-grader at Champion School in San Jose, California. “I’m always thinking of something. If you think it can be done, then it can probably be done.” Organisations for the visually impaired welcome the prospect of an affordable Braille printer, which they say could give blind people better access to literature and news. 6 Did you know? Was there really a chimpanzee war? You would think only human beings would be stupid enough to wage war on each other for no reason. But it turns out that chimpanzees have done the same too. The Gombe Chimpanzee War (also known as the ‘Four-Year War’ of Gombe), lasting from 1974 to 1978, was a violent conflict between two communities of chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, in Tanzania. The two warring chimpanzee groups were the Kasakela and the Kahama, which occupied territories in the northern and southern areas of the park, respectively. Initially, the two groups had been a single, united community but in 1974, Jane Goodall, a researcher who was studying the chimps, noticed that they had begun dividing themselves into northern and southern groups. Goodall had remarked in her notes that there had been conflict brewing among the chimps since 1971 but it was only three years later that it turned into an all-out war. The Kahama group resided in the south of the park and consisted of six adult males, three adult females and their young. The larger Kasakela group, meanwhile, consisted of 12 adult females and their young, and eight adult males. The Kasakela group resided in the north of the park. The first outbreak of violence occurred on January 7, 1974, when a party of six adult Kasakela males attacked and killed ‘Godi’, a young Kahama male, who had been feeding in a tree. This was the first time that any of the chimpanzees had been seen to deliberately kill a fellow chimp. Over the next four years, war ensued. The outbreak of the war was very shocking to researcher Goodall. During her time spent studying chimpanzees, Goodall had thought that while chimpanzees were similar to humans in many ways, they were much nicer in their behaviour. Because of the Gombe War, the violent side of chimpanzees was first revealed to us.

Words of the Week

Fun facts about numbers The numerical digits we use today such as 1, 2 and 3 are based on the Hindu-Arabic numeral system developed over 1,000 years ago.

Noun: A word, line, verse, number, sentence, or any sequence of characters reading the same backwards and forward. Origin: Created by English playwright Ben Jonson in the 17th century. It comes from the Greek word palindromes which means ‘backwards again’ Examples: - Was it a rat I saw? - Do geese see god? - Never odd or even? - Madam, I’m Adam - Eva, can I stab bats in a cave? - Rise to vote, sir!

Noun: A word which makes a new word when read backwards. Origin: Created by linguist C. C. Bombaugh in 1961. Interestingly, the name is ‘palindrome’ spelled backwards. Examples: - Repaid — Diaper - Stressed — Dessert - Swap — Paws - Deliver — Reviled - Zeus — Seuz

What comes after a million, billion and trillion? A quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion, septillion, octillion, nonillion, decillion and undecillion. The name of the popular search engine ‘Google’ came from a misspelling of the word ‘googol’, which is a very large number (the number one followed by one hundred zeros, to be exact). A ‘googolplex’ is the number 1 followed by a googol zeros — a number so ridiculously big that it can’t be written because there literally isn’t enough room in the entire universe to fit it in. Zero is the only number that can’t be represented in Roman numerals. The number seven shows up a lot in human culture. We have seven wonders of the world, seven deadly sins and seven colours of the rainbow. Not to mention seven seas, seven dwarves, seven days in the week and much more. 555 is used by some in Thailand as slang for ‘hahaha’, because the word for five is pronounced ‘ha’. In a room of just 23 people there’s a 50% chance that two people have the same birthday. In a room of 75 there’s a 99% chance of two people having the same birthday. This is known as the Birthday Problem. The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where you add the two preceding numbers in the sequence to give you the next one. So it starts 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc. The Fibonacci sequence shows up in nature a fair bit. For example, The spiral shapes of sunflowers follow a Fibonacci sequence.

In the forest of Zonzon, nzon, there lived lions, monkeys and many other animals. nimals. The lions were the unquestioned rulers. ers. No one could dare to question them because cause they were powerful, strong and fast. Nott tto mention they h had ti th d really ll sharp teeth. Whenever animal elections were held, the lions always scared everyone into voting for them, and they won every time. Zonzon was like a prison for all other animals — they couldn’t eat their favourite fruits without the lions’ permission, they couldn’t go out after dark, in fact they couldn’t even drink water from the river when it wasn’t their turn! The lions had also restricted them from entering their part of the forest which was much bigger than their own. They were all very sad and cursed the lions for their behaviour. In Zonzon, the monkeys had to live in the same tree and they kept fighting for the most comfortable branch to sleep. As there were many banana and apple trees on the other part of the forest, all they wanted was to give each monkey family their own home in a separate tree, amongst their favourite fruits. But, alas, it was not possible. One day, another family of monkeys came to Zonzon from a neighbouring forest. One of the new monkeys, Roco, was very surprised to hear the situation. “What!?” he said, “They don’t even let you eat bananas? But whyy don’t you people fight back?” “But… they are strong! Who can fight them? Their teeth are like knives!” said a shy monkey, Zony. “Yes, they are strong. But strength is not the only quality,” Roco said with a mysterious smile and whispered his plan in every ear. Two days later, the king of lions, Smarty, was taking a stroll to make sure all animals were behaving themselves. Roco was waiting for him at the corner tree. As soon as Smarty reached him, he said loudly, “Oh, hey Smarty!” Smarty was startled — never had any monkey addressed him directly. “Excuse me? How dare you use my name! I’m the most fearful lion in my pack!” Roco snorted, “Fearful? Maybe. But I’m the most talented creature in this forest.” “No you’re not.” Smarty was indignant. “Oh, really? Let’s have a competition then.”

You will need: “I don’t have time to compete with a monkey like you!” Smarty yelled. “Alright alright, Smarty, if you’re scared...” Roco didn’t complete his sentence but it changed the lion’s mind at once. Smarty was, in fact, quite they opposite of his name. “SCARED? Of you! No way. I’ll compete with you right now!” Roco climbed down from his tree. A hundred monkeys poked their heads out of trees to witness this competition. “Okay, Smarty, let’s do this. But if you lose, you have to resign from kingship, and have to hand over your part of the forest to us,” Roco’s mischievous smile was back. Smarty agreed. “I can beat you in anything,” he said. All the monkeys sat down in the crowd and started chattering excitedly. Zony, the shy monkey was chosen to be the announcer. “Our first competition is ‘Climbing Trees’!” she declared. As soon as the whistle was blown, Roco swiftly climbed the nearest tree and reached the top before Smarty could even take one step. “That’s cheating!” the lion roared in anger. Ignoring him, the shy monkey said quickly, “Next we have, ‘Swing from Tree To Tree!” On hearing that, Roco started swinging from the tree he had just climbed. He swung from all the trees in the clearing and came back to the ground. “Seems like I have won this round too,” he grinned. “I didn’t — it’s not... I can’t...” Smarty couldn’t utter a single sentence in his fury. Roco burped loudly and said, “Sorry mate, a competition is a competition, and you have lost!” Smarty roared and roared, but he had to keep his promise. The monkeys were allowed to enter Zonzon’s other half of the forest, and every monkey family finally had a tree of their own. Roco’s smartness proved that being strong and powerful are not the only ways you can win — brains are more important than brawns.

3 cups of caster sugar 1 cup of water A lolly stick A jar or bowl Fork Food colouring (optional)

What to do: 1. Place the sugar and water into a pan and heat whilst stirring until the sugar dissolves (ask a grownup to help with this part). Leave to cool for a little while. You can add a few drops of food colouring to the mixture, but this is optional. 2. Pour the solution into a glass jar and suspend the lolly stick into it, using the fork to hold it in place. Don’t let it touch the bottom or the sides. 3. You should see crystals forming after a few days.

What is happening: A crystal is a solid material called a mineral, with a naturally geometrically regular form. Some take millions of years to form, such as diamonds. The crystals we made take just a few days. Most minerals dissolved in water will form crystals if given enough time and space. The shape of the crystal formed depends on the mineral’s molecule shape.

In the case of our sugar crystals there are two processes at work: Evaporation — the water evaporated slowly, making the solution more saturated. Hence, the sugar molecules came out of the solution and collected on the stick. Precipitation — the solution we made was very concentrated which means that the water molecules were less and the sugar molecules were greater. Hence, the solution began to precipitate.
