Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC. It depicts the adventures of a Time Lord — a time-travelling humanoid (having an appearance or charcter resembling that of a human) alien known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his time-travelling space ship called the Time and Relative Dimension in Space (TARDIS). Its exterior resembles a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of enemies while working to save civilisations and help ordinary people. The Doctor is an adventurer through space and time, exploring the most wonderful and terrible places in the universe and usually ending up in trouble.

Sonic Screwdriver
The sonic screwdriver is a fictional tool in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It is a multifunctional (has many uses) tool used by the Doctor. It’s most common function is that of a lock pick (opening locks without the original key), but can be used to perform other operations such as medical scans, remotely controlling other devices and locating alien life. It can operate many computers, whether their origin is alien or human. Like the TARDIS, it has become one of the icons of the programme. Throughout the series, there have been many different versions of the sonic screwdriver, as with each Doctor the design of the screwdriver was changed.
TARDIS A Time and Relative Dimension in Space (TARDIS) is a product of the advanced technology of the Time Lords. A properly maintained and piloted TARDIS can transport its occupants to any point in time and to any place in the universe. The TARDIS has the ability to blend in with its surroundings using the ship's ‘chameleon circuit’. TARDISes provide their users with additional tools and abilities including a telepathically (the supposed communication of thoughts or ideas by means other than the known senses) based universal translation system.

Cybermen
The Daleks were the distorted and mutated (altered) remains of the Kaled people, placed in metal war machines by the Kaled’s chief scientist Davros. Chasing the Doctor across space and time, the Daleks invaded the Earth, developed the Reality Bomb and tried to imprison the Doctor. They fought the Time Lords in The Last Great Time War – a conflict so powerful and destructive that the universe was said to shake. In an effort to save reality, the Doctor used ‘the Moment’ to wipe out both races. But that wasn’t the end of the Daleks.
Originally born on Earth’s twin planet Mondas, the Cybermen were created as the Mondasians replaced parts of their dying bodies with plastic and steel. Eventually they added emotional inhibitors (substance that stops a chemical raction), suppressing all feelings – love, hate and even fear. Cybermen can convert humans. They take orders from a Cyber-leader, whose data can be downloaded to a drone (an unmanned aircaraft) if the leader is destroyed. Like the Daleks, the Cybermen have stood up against the Doctor through space and time. He has prevented them from destroying the Earth’s weather system, getting their hands on the Nemesis statue and taking over Victorian London with their Cyber-King.

The Time Lords are an ancient extraterrestrial (of or from outside the earth) civilisation of a humanoid species known as Gallifreyans in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, of which the series' main character, the Doctor, is a member. They developed timerelated technologies based on their perception of time which includes strictly controlled space/ time travel machines (known as TARDIS) and monitoring devices to travel through time. They can act to control timelines of a wide range of events and individuals, so long as they do not cross back into their own timeline.

Cat call Police reacted quickly when there was silence on a 999 call. But after breaking down the front door of the house from where the call was made, officers realised who was to blame – a cat named Bruce. The kitten was home alone while his owners were at work, and probably wanted some attention. While pawing at the house phone, he somehow managed to contact the emergency services. Once police arrived at the London flat, their fears were heightened by the sound of shrieking from inside. It turned out to be Bruce, fighting with his cat flatmate Audrey. After solving the mystery, police waited for James, the owner, to come home so they could explain what happened. The 33-year-old said: “Since we had the landline installed Bruce always rushes to answer the phone when it rings. He’s also fascinated by the buttons, which he loves to press.” Now faced with a bill of hundreds of pounds for a new front door, the sound engineer added: “The police were only doing their job. For all they know, something really dangerous was going on in the flat.” METRO. CO.UK
Duck-y silence There have been calls for a ten-second silence after an earthquake caused a giant rubber duck to deflate. The 18m-high artwork by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman has toured the world this year but was damaged when a 6.3-magnitude quake struck Taiwan. The duck began to deflate after a power cut caused its air pump to fail. Some onlookers were reportedly so upset by the incident they asked for a ten-second silence to honour the much-loved duck. Officials are confident of re-inflating the duck, having done so already when it was stationed in Hong Kong. On that occasion pollution was cited as a reason for the duck’s deflation. The Taiwanese quake appears to be the first time a natural phenomenon has been to blame for the duck’s demise. METRO.CO.UK

Exhusted owl
An exhausted northern hawk owl was rescued from a freezing cold lake in Finland before deciding to take a break on the edge of a canoe deck. The exhausted and soaking owl was found stranded in Lake Tuusula, North of Helsinki by local adventurer Pentti Taskinen. The owl was taken safely back ashore and dried off before it was able to fly to the forest. Unlike many other owls, the northern hawk owls are active during the day, but also feed on small rodents, mammals as well as other birds. They are often found in North America, Serbia and Northern Scandinavia. METRO.CO.UK
BatKid A young Batman fan suffering from leukemia will get the chance to don the famous black cape after the Make-A-Wish Foundation decided to transform part of San Francisco into Gotham City for him. Five-year-old Miles will have his work cut out after the charity revealed the young Caped Crusader will be going up against The Riddler and The Penguin, in a performance that will feature thousands of participants. A post on the Make-A-Wish Foundation page describes Miles as a “sunny, positive little boy and finds his inspiration in super heroes.” His wish for the charity was to become ‘BatKid’ for the day. Miles AKA BatKid will ride round parts of San Francisco saving the day. As part of the event, Penguin and Riddler will have to be stopped after ’kidnapping’ the San Francisco Giant’s mascot Lou Seal. Miles need not be worried though as he will have use of a Batmobile and will be helped by a crime-fighting partner, rumoured to be Robin. “The [Penguin’s] getaway car will be visible on Union Square (a convertible so that everyone can see what is happening), and the chase will be on,” reported a local newspaper. “After catching the Penguin, Batman will make his final stop at City Hall, where the mayor and the police chief of Gotham City will thank him and give him the key to the city.” Make-A-Wish is encouraging locals to take part by filming the event and turning up at locations around the city where the action is being played out. Word Origins Doughnuts Have you ever wondered why doughnuts (fried cakes) have holes? In truth, nobody knows for sure why people started making holes in them. There are some tales from a sailor, Captain Hanson Gregory, who claimed to have invented the holed doughnut in 1847 at the age of 16. There are a variety of versions of this tale, but the version he himself put forth in the Washington Post (March 26, 1916) was as follows: “I took the cover off the ship’s tin pepper box, and I cut into the middle of that doughnut, the first hole ever seen by mortal eyes. Well, sir, them doughnuts was the finest I ever tasted. No more indigestion, no more greasy sinkers but just well-done, friedthrough doughnuts.” He then claims to have taught this to a variety of people and thanks to being a sailor, the holed doughnut idea spread throughout the world. We are not sure whether this is true or not, but most bakers do think that the reason doughnuts have holes is as Captain Gregory stated, “to get rid of the slightly doughy centre.”

Cool facts The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world. They can reach a top speed of around 113km per hour. A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 113km in just a few seconds. Cheetahs are extremely fast however they tire quickly and can only keep up their top speed for a few minutes before they are too tired to continue. Cheetahs are smaller than other members of the big cat family, weighing only 45 – 60 kilogrammes. One way to recognise a cheetah is by the long, black lines which run from the inside of each eye to the mouth. These are usually called ‘tear lines’ and scientists believe they help protect the cheetah’s eyes from the harsh sun and help them to see long distances. Cheetahs are the only big cats that cannot roar. They can purr though and usually loudly when they are grooming or sitting near other cheetahs. While lions and leopards usually do their hunting at night, cheetahs hunt for food during the day. A cheetah has amazing eyesight during the day and can spot prey from five kilometres away.
