Make Your Own Compass

Supplies needed: • A small dish of water • A sewing needle • A bar magnet (without coating, preferably with the poles labeled) • Craft foam or waxed paper.

How to make it:

Step 1

Take the “North” side of your bar magnet and place it perpendicular to your needle. Starting at the top of the needle, slide the side of the bar magnet along the length of the needle. Do not slide back and forth, but rather slide from one end to the other. Stop and start back at the end you began with. Repeat several times (like fifty).

Turn the needle upside down and use the opposite end of the magnet and repeat the same process until the needle is magnetised.

Have an adult thread the needle through the waxed paper/foam circle. This will cause the needle to float on top of the water.

Place the needle on top of the water. Watch as the tip of the needle spins to point northward!

A team of 28 flexible gym girls entered the record books by cramming themselves into a Mini at the same time. This is a sight quite common in Pakistan where we regularly see a large family with almost half a dozen children trying to squeeze into a car.

The Sussex record-breakers took 18 minutes to wriggle into position inside the iconic vehicle in London to set the official record as part of Guinness World Records Day. Most of them had their faces squashed against the windscreen and bodies teeming out of windows.

Organiser Dani Maynard said the girls had been confident they would break their own record of 27 people set in Eastbourne last year. “While we have not quite been able to fit any of the girls into the Mini’s glove box, there is a surprising amount of space to utilise,” she said.

She added: “After our achievement last year, we know exactly what it takes to squeeze 28 people into a Mini and we stepped up our training regime to include extra stretching and fun activities like hula-hoop relay racing.”

More than 420,000 people worldwide took part in the eighth annual Guinness World Records Day in celebration of ‘weird, wacky and downright astonishing’ records.

Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said: “The Mini is a British icon, and the Minicram has become a symbol of classic world record breaking, up there with cream-cracker eating and leaving your fingernails untrimmed.”SOURCE: WEB.ORANGE.CO.UK

These pigs are sporty and have a relatively clean lifestyle! A Chinese farmer encourages his pigs to dive headfirst into a pond each day — because he says it makes them taste better.

Farmer Huang Demin says his diving pigs also bring visitors flocking to his farm in Guanshan village, Ningxiang county, in the country’s Huang Province.

He built a 10ft tall wooden diving board close to his pigsty so his livestock can enjoy a dive into the pond everyday.

He reckons it makes the animals grow healthier and faster — and says they love it, although some of them need a gentle nudge.

Grand model A 72-year-old Chinese grandfather has become an overnight fashion icon after modelling female clothing from his granddaughter’s clothing range.

Fashion designer Lyu Ting says her grandfather Liu Qianping recently visited her when she had just received a new consignment of clothes.

She comments: “When unpacking the boxes, he casually put on one piece — and I and my staff all thought it was a great match.”

Liu, who says he had never tried on women’s clothes before, was also apparently quite taken with how he looked.

So, when Lyu was unable to find the right model for her website, she turned to her grandfather.

Liu can now be seen striking a variety of poses on Lyu’s website. She says, “The sales number is five times more than before, and the traffic is hundreds of times more.”

Liu added: “I just want to do a little help to my granddaughter, and it didn’t hurt me at all. We were all very happy that day when they took the pictures. Life is all about happiness, isn’t it?”

High life It’s not just possible in movies proves Jonathan Trappe, an adventurer who has aped the Disney movie Up by taking to the skies in a house attached to helium balloons.

The 38-year-old, who was inspired by the 2009 Pixar film, staged a maiden flight ahead of a planned voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.

The cluster balloonist from Raleigh in North Carolina, debuted his floating house at the Leon International Balloon festival in Mexico.

It was a warm-up for his ambitious planned 2,500 mile transatlantic balloon flight in a 7ft lifeboat scheduled for next summer.

He said: “Every attempt before this was geared towards this flight. I’ve been training for a long time.”

In 2010, he became the first person to fly the English Channel attached to helium-filled balloons.

He added: “It’s about living an interesting life — for me as the pilot and those watching. So, one day we can look back and say: ‘Humankind were able to pull this off. They did it’.”

Santa gets stuck This unconventional Santa did not climb down a chimney and for that he was punished. This Santa Claus was left dangling from the ceiling of a shopping centre — after the rope got caught up in his beard.

Farther Christmas was stuck for about 40 minutes about 15ft above the ground inside Reading’s Broad Street Mall.

Eyewitness Ryan Gaudreau said: “Everyone was laughing at him — he didn’t really know what to do.”

Stephanie Maynard, marketing manager at the centre, said Santa, whose appearance was part of the switching on of the mall’s Christmas lights, was not hurt. “He could have just taken his beard off and let himself down but he was such a professional and he didn’t want to let the children down. He lost his footing as he came through the hole in the ceiling and there was a sudden jolt and he got caught in the clip on the rope,” she said.

She added: “Some people were absolutely mortified while others thought it was the funniest thing ever. They had to let another rope down and get him down and there was such a roar from the crowd.

It’s a tough life!

Probably tired out from all the growing, a picture shows a baby yawning in the womb.

It is one of dozens produced by Durham University researchers who were fascinated by whether foetuses yawn and, if so, why.

To find out, they gave 15 mothers-to-be 4D ultrasound scans four times during their pregnancy. The last was done at 36 weeks, just a few weeks before the eight girls and seven boys were born.

Rather than the grainy ‘flat’ images produced by the 2D scanners, a 4D machine stitches together pictures taken from a variety of angles to create clear three-dimensional images. These are then recorded on video — the fourth dimension. Researchers painstakingly analysed these highly detailed videos frame by frame to see how the foetuses moved their mouths.

Some academics believe that rather than yawning, the babies are simply opening and closing their mouths. But researcher Nadja Reissland said the scans provided clear evidence that they yawn as well.

On some occasions, a baby would slowly open their his mouth, before quickly snapping it shut — characteristics of a yawn.

The analysis revealed that the youngest babies yawned the most, but there was no difference between the sexes.

Dr Reissland calculated that if she had been able to monitor the babies for longer, she would have caught them yawning an average of six times an hour.

If yawning is a sign of brain development, Dr Reissland believes that it could one day be added to the indicators doctors use to determine whether a foetus is developing normally. SOURCE: .DAILYMAIL.CO.UK

“Cat got your tongue?” is a nonsense question that you ask when someone is being unusually quiet and not talking.

People usually ask a person, “Cat got your tongue?” to start a conversation. There are two possible origins of this phrase. The first refers to when victims of the cat-o’-nine-tails — a whip the English Navy used for flogging — were left speechless from the pain inflicted upon them.
