? w o n k u o y Did Fruit or Vegetable? Everyone probably knows that a tomato is really a fruit, but does everybody know how many other foods that we call vegetables are actually fruits? Did you know, for example, that bell pepper is a fruit? There are a number of seriously surprising foods that you probably think you know a lot about but in reality don’t fully understand. The terms we commonly use to classify our food -- namely our fruits, vegetables, berries, grains and nuts -- may be leading you astray. According to botanists, a fruit is the part of the plant that develops from a flower. It’s also the section of the plant that contains the seeds. The other parts of plants are considered vegetables. These include the stems, leaves and roots — and even the flower bud. The following are technically fruits: avocado, beans, peapods, corn kernels, cucumbers, grains, nuts, olives, peppers, pumpkin, squash, sunflower seeds and tomatoes. Vegetables include celery (stem), lettuce (leaves), cauliflower and broccoli (buds), and beets, carrots and potatoes (roots). From a culinary standpoint, vegetables are less sweet and served as part of the main dish. Fruits are more sweet and tart and are most often served as a dessert or snack. Both fruits and vegetables can be made into juice for a refreshing beverage. Nutritionally speaking, fruits and vegetables are similar. Compared with animal products, they’re generally lower in calories and fat, but higher in fiber. Fruits and vegetables also contain health-enhancing plant compounds such as antioxidants. And they’re loaded with vitamins and minerals. SOURCE: MAYOCLINIC.ORG

Best dressed at Halloween This could be the best Halloween costume you’ve seen this year. A child, presumably part of a creative family, was sent to a Halloween party dressed as a giant Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy. His picture was uploaded to Imgur last week where it has been viewed an amazing 1.7 million times. Posted under the title ‘This little kid ruled his Halloween school party’, the outfit has clearly impressed other users of the website. Rocket Raccoon is a fictional superhero voiced by Bradley Cooper in the hit Marvel Comics films. Meanwhile another child, this time dressed up as a snake , has also caused an online stir. The incredible outfit has already been viewed a massive 2.6 million times. A user commented under the picture saying, “OK, well that’s the scariest costume I’ve seen this year! I thought it was a creepy statue in the thumbnail!” GEORGIANEWSDAY.COM

Waking the dead

Families in Toraja in South Sulawesi believe in welcoming the spirit of a dead person back to the village of his origin. And as a popular belief, they dig up the graves of their deceased loved ones, wash them, groom them and dress them up in fancy new clothes before walking them around in the village once every three years. They also repair or fix broken and damaged coffins. They call the bizarre ritual of dolling up mummies Ma’nen or The Ceremony of Cleaning Corpses and practice it to honour the spirits of their ancestors. From babies to older people, corpses are exhumed by the families and given proper baths, grooming session and new clothes. They are then walked in straight lines around the village and buried again. Treasure trove Black cat selfie guide Halloween might have just passed but the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) are putting a big focus on all the black cats out there, showing the public how to make them look good in photos. It might seem odd, but according to experts, no one wants to adopt a black cat as their feline friend because they don’t look as good in selfies. So, the charity has released a video describing simple steps on how to make your black cat look as good as possible in photos. The steps include choosing a clean, minimal background, finding a spot with good but soft lighting and to make the eyes the focus of the picture. It also advices to check the exposure settings of the camera, so that the features of the cat don’t morph into one black blob. Figures show that out of all the cats under the care of the RSPCA, a massive 70% are black ones. MIRROR.CO.UK

A huge hoard of silver coins dating back 1,000 years has been declared an official treasure trove. Paul Coleman, 60 , found a lead basket containing the 5,248 Anglo-Saxon silver pennies with his metal detector. Some experts put the value of the find at £1.3 million, of which Mr Coleman can expect to receive a large share. Mr Coleman told a treasure trove inquest he almost did not join the Weekend Wanderers metal detector club trip in December. But he was glad he did when he stumbled across the valuable collection, dating back to the reign of Ethelred the Unready in the 990s. He said: “When the detector started beeping, it felt like the size of a manhole cover and that caused me to nearly not dig it up.” Mr Coleman, of Southampton, said some of the coins were coincidentally inscribed with his surname and added, “I joked that the hoard had my name on it - I didn’t realise it literally did.” Coroner Richard Hulett ruled the “exceptional” find was treasure, meaning that it goes to the Crown. However, Buckinghamshire County Museum in Aylesbury is set to bid for the coins. The value will be decided in January and Mr Coleman and the landowner can expect to receive a reward. In 2009, Terry Herbert dug up 3,500 silver and gold items in Staffordshire. He and farmer Fred Johnson shared £3.3 million after Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery bought the collection. Lady luck smiles By Mahnaz Mir There was once a fisherman who lived in the forest with his wife. They were very poor and even though they loved each other a lot, the two wished to have a better life. The wife often dreamt of buying new clothes and jewellery while the husband wanted a new house where he could live in comfort. Inspite of their dreams the two continued to live in poverty as each day the fisherman went to the lake early in the morning and looked for fish to catch. Each day he tried, but only managed to catch one or two fish that he brought home for dinner. Each night the fisherman fell asleep scheming and trying to find a way to catch enough fish to sell in the market. Then one morning the fisherman went to the lake and no matter how hard he tried he was not able to catch a single fish. Dishartened and empty handed, he returned home. When his wife saw him in such pain, she insisted he take her to the lake. After much insistance the fisherman gave in and took her to the lake. Once they got in the boat he took it to a certain distance and then stopped, saying that no one had ever taken their boat further than that point because it was very dangerous. The wife asked him to trust her and navigate the boat right to the middle of the lake. Even though he was frightened, the fisherman complied. Once the boat reached the middle of the lake the wife began to sing, she had a beautiful voice which attracted the fish and they came right up to the surface to listen. She then motioned for the fisherman to hook his fishing pole and catch as many fish as possible. The two later went to the market together and sold all the extra fish. This became their routine and gradually the fisheman and his wife became rich and were able to afford everything that they wished for. Whenever anyone asked them for the secret of their success, they smiled and answered, “We took a chance no one else would.”

With winters almost upon us, here are a few fun ideas to keep your green thumbs busy: • Start an avocado tree by sticking four toothpicks around the perimeter of the seed and suspending it in a glass of water with the round end down. Change the water every two days until roots form and start to fill the grass. Plant the growing seed and let it go, but watch out! They grow fast. • Create a leafy garden by placing the tops from carrots, beets, and onions, as well as the bottoms of celery, on dishes of clear water. Keep the tops watered each day and place the dish in a sunny window. You’ll see a small leafy forest growing within a week or so. • Suspend a sweet potato in a glass jar half filled with water. Keep the water filled so that it touches the bottom of the potato. Green sprouts will appear at the top and will eventually turn into an attractive viney houseplant. Some sweet potato vines have lasted a few years, growing up and around kitchen windows. • Plant an indoor herb garden. They are easy and quick to grow. Many herbs grow well indoors on a warm window sill. Purchase some cute pots or make your own, for your window sill and trying growing herbs like basil, chives and parsley. • Make pet rocks. When the weather is cold and gloomy pet rocks can add some colour and character to your garden. Making pet rocks is such a fun craft activity that can keep you indoor and entertained for hours.

Besides growing plants, activities over winter can include crafts and projects to get ready for next spring’s garden. Here are a few to get you started: • Paint clay planters for container gardening. • Turn popsicle sticks into plant labels with bright paint or markers. • Roll pine cones in peanut butter, then birdseed, to make simple bird feeders. • Read gardening books aimed at children. • Turn paper towel rolls and old newspaper into seed-starting pots for spring planting.

1/2 cup

Whipped cream

2 ½ cup

Material

• Water • Bleach • Food colouring • 2 clear cups Directions: • Fill one of the clear cups three quarters full with room temperature tap water. • Add two drops of food colouring to the water and observe the vividness of the food colouring while it mixes in the water. • Fill the other cup one quarter full with bleach before mixing it with the coloured water. Method: • Pour the whipped cream in a large mixing bowl. • Add the chocolate syrup and condensed milk to the bowl. • Keep blending the mixture with an electric beater until it is stiff. • Place in an air-tight container and freeze for six to eight hours.

Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.

What is happening: Bleach does something that water, very obviously, does not: it fades colours. This process is called bleaching, or whitening, and is a result of either oxidizing or reducing. Oxidizing bleaches work by breaking chemical bonds between the molecules of dye. The resulting molecules, after being oxidized, will no longer absorb visible light, resulting in faded colours. Bleach can also fade colours through reducing. Reducing bleach converts double bonds into single bonds. The reducing process results in a molecule that is unable to absorb visible light.
