Music has been a vital part of human history. Be it the invention of different musical instruments across various civilisations or the medieval oral tradition of ballads, music, rhythm and rhyme have been an integral part of the human experience. The tradition gained a new found popularity throughout the world over the past century. Here’s a timeline highlighting some significant moments from western pop music history.
1969
1955
1893 The Happy Birthday tune is written by two teachers in Louisville, Kentucky.
1936 Electric guitar makes its debut.
Elvis Presley becomes the first rock star. Presley’s first single, Heartbreak Hotel, becomes a number-one hit in the United States.

1964 The Beatles’ I Want to Hold Your Hand is a sensation, igniting the British invasion.
‘Pop’ is an abbreviation of the word ‘popular’. The genre originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. The term ‘pop song’ is first recorded as being used in 1926. The term ‘pop music’ originated in Britain in the mid-1950s as a description for rock and roll and the new youth music styles that it influenced. Since the late 1950s, however, pop has had the special meaning of non-classical music. Some of the most wellknown names in pop music history include: The Beatles, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and ABBA.
The Woodstock Music & Art Fair, or simply Woodstock, is a music festival, billed as ‘An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music’.
1983
1981 MTV music television debuts with non-stop music videos.
Compact discs begin to replace vinyl records. Madonna releases her debut album; the single Holiday becomes a hit.
1985 Michael Jackson releases Thriller; the video becomes a classic.
Early British popular music, originated in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries. Broadside ballads were arguably the first form of commercial popular music in Britain. They were a product of the development of cheap print from the Sixteenth Century. Technological, economic and social changes led to new forms of music in the Nineteenth Century, including the brass band, which produced a popular and communal form of classical music. Similarly, the music hall sprang up to cater for the entertainment of new urban societies, adapting existing forms of music to produce popular songs and acts. In the 1930s, the influence of American Jazz led to the creation of British dance bands, who provided a popular music that began to dominate social occasions and the radio airwaves. Parlour music was popular music performed in the parlours of middle class homes by amateur singers and pianists.
1989 Eight-yearold Britney Spears makes her musical television debut on Star Search.
1990 Grunge rock rises in Seattle, featuring bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

? w o n k u o y d i D Carnivorous Plants Most carnivorous plants eat flying, foraging, or crawling insects. Those that live in or around water capture very small aquatic prey like mosquito larvae and tiny fish. On rare occasions, some tropical carnivorous plants have even been reported to capture frogs, or even rats and birds, although these creatures were probably sick or already near death. But don’t worry, these plants pose no danger to humans, even if you fell asleep in a whole bed of them. Carnivorous plants tend to grow in places where the soil is thin or lacking in nutrients like bogs and rocky areas, so these plants must get some of their nutrients by trapping and digesting animals, especially insects. More than 600 species and subspecies of carnivorous plants have been identified, although some are now extinct. The Venus Flytrap is probably the most famous. Just like other plants that need to attract other creatures to help with things like pollination, carnivorous plants use different strategies to attract their prey. Some are sweetly scented, others are brightly coloured, still others have parts that are sticky or slippery or designed in a way that makes it hard for prey to escape. Once they have attracted their dinner, carnivorous plants use five basic trapping strategies: • Pitfall traps, like pitcher plants, in which the prey falls into a rolled leaf that contains a pool of digestive enzymes and/or bacteria at the bottom. • Flypaper traps, that use a sticky glue substance to hold onto unsuspecting insects. • Snap traps, like the Venus’s-flytrap, where the leaves actually snap shut to create a plant prison. • Bladder traps, which use a bladder to suck in aquatic creatures. • Lobster-pot traps, which use inward-pointing hairs to force prey towards the digestive enzymes. The Venus Flytrap has long been an object of fascination. The Venus Flytraps aren’t the only type of carnivorous plant that moves, but they are the most commonly known. When something touches the trigger hairs on the edges of the leaves, the cells on the inside wall of the trap transfer water to the outside walls, so the inside essentially goes limp. This makes the leaf snap closed. Another way carnivorous plants move can be observed in sundew plants, which have a long flypaper trap. Once the prey gets stuck on the gluey tentacles, the tentacles embrace the creature by growing faster on the outside than the inside. And they can do this really fast. One species of sundew can bend 180º in only a minute or so! SOURCE: FACTMONSTER.COM

Puppy pal Gerreirinho the donkey was discovered in excruciating pain with three broken legs and brought back to the home of Zenith Gurgel in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza. There, the foal struck up an unusual friendship with Zenith’s puppy. She named the donkey Guerreirinho, meaning ‘little warrior’, and over the weeks as he recovered, the tiny puppy stayed by his side. The heart-warming scenes have been recorded on video and have been a big hit on social media in the city, located in the east Brazilian state of Ceara. The publicity on Facebook has also helped Zenith raise enough money needed for Guerreirinho to have an operation and get back on his hooves again. MIRROR.CO.UK
Perfectly preserved skeleton A skeleton has been found by archaeologists and has been almost perfect preserved for a millennium. The sarcophagus was uncovered on September 16, buried underneath the small church of St Alban’s Priory in Odense, Denmark. The skeleton was found after work had begun on a light rail project scheduled to run through the area. Archaeologists had been giving the site a once-over as it is known to be an area of historic importance. The skeleton is likely to be that of a man, aged approximately 30 and 187cm tall, although little else is yet known about the body. The coffin and its remains have been moved to the University of Southern Denmark for further investigation. EXPRESS.CO.UK
Amazing skating skill
This eight-year-old superhuman boy squeezes himself down to just seven inches tall to skate under 53 cars backwards. In incredible footage posted online flexible Devisri Prasad is attempting to break the world record after training for six hours a day, and yet never missed a single day of school. The youngster is now waiting to have his attempt — as well as four other world records for fastest limbo skating under cars, longest limbo skating, longest limbo skating backwards and lowest limbo skating — verified by Guinness. The ultra-flexible youngster covered the 100m distance beneath the 53 cars in an incredible 22.59 seconds in the ‘farthest distance limbo skating under cars backwards’ category, smashing the previous record of 30m. The primary school pupil says he picked up the hobby at the age of six after watching his sisters rollerskating. HUFFINGTONPOST.COM
Oldest sprinter Sprinter Hidekichi Miyazaki has broken his own world record for “oldest competitive sprinter” in the world. Mr Miyazaki is 105-years-young and regularly completes in the 100-metre sprint. He was born on September 22 1910 and celebrated his birthday by running a 100-metre sprint in just 42.22 seconds. Speaking afterwards, Mr Miyazaki said, “Today my target was 35 seconds, I shed tears of disappointment because I was not in good condition. I am not satisfied with today’s time. But I am satisfied that I could cross finish line.” The sprinter is referred to as the “Golden Bolt” because he imitates Usain Bolt’s lightening pose. Usain Bolt had recent success at the Athletic World Championships where he ran the 100-metres in 9.58 seconds. “He hasn’t raced me yet,” says Mr Miyazaki who has longed for the opportunity to race again Usain Bolt. A Guinness World Records adjudicator waited on the sidelines, ready to present the runner with his third official certificate and a copy of Guinness World Records 2016. TELEGRAPH.CO.UK
Bali the tiger By Noor bint’e Shahid Once upon a time there was a tiger named Bali. He was very hungry and could not find any prey in the jungle, so he went towards the village. He saw a woman carrying a pot of water. He thought this as a great moment because the woman was alone. He attacked her and had a great feast. He also drank from her pot. As he was going to eat her hand, he saw something shiny on her hand. It was a gold bangle. He took it off and fled away. Several day passed. Legends of his evil deed were spread to every corner of the village. Then one day, as he was searching for food, a great idea struck his mind. He took the bangle and went to the local pond. A man was swimming there. When the man saw Bali, he began to scream. Bali comforted him by and said these words “Dear friend, please don’t be afraid I’m a frienly tiger and don’t eat people. I only ate that woman because there was no other prey available.” While the tiger pleaded with the man hunters from the village heard the man’s screams and came to defend him. They threw their spears at the tiger. One of the spears punctured through the tiger’s heart. The lesson to be taken away from this story is that no matter how good you are, if you mistreat someone once, no one trusts you again. Share your short stories with us. Material
Ingredients: Pineapple juice
250 ml
Transparent fizzy drink
250 ml
Vanilla ice cream
1 scoop
Canned pineapple
2 slices
Method:
• Pour the pineapple juice in a tall glass. • Add the fizzy drink. • Add the pineapple slices to the glass. • Top with vanilla ice cream. • Garnish with pineapple chunks and serve.
• A piece of tissue paper • A balloon • Scissors • A head of hair
Directions: • Cut out a ghost shape in the tissue as shown about 1.5 inches (4 cm) long and add some eyes with a marker. • If you are using 2-ply tissues, peel apart the 2 layers to get the tissue as thin as possible. • Blow up the balloon and tie it. Then rub it really fast through your hair for about 10 seconds. This will add a static charge. • Slowly bring the balloon near the ghost, and the ghost will begin to rise toward the balloon. If the balloon is charged enough, the ghost will rise and float right up to the balloon, even when it is several inches away. With a little practice, you can get the ghost to rise, float, and even dance around. TIP: The easiest way to make the ghost rise without it sticking to the balloon is to tape the very tip of the bottom of the ghost to a table. The ghost will rise and move along with the balloon. With a good charge, the balloon can control the ghost from several inches away. What is happening:
Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.
When you rub the balloon through your hair, invisible electrons with a negative charge build up on the surface of the balloon. The electrons have the power to pull very light objects with a positive charge toward them — in this case, the tissue ghost! SOURCE: SCIENCEBOB.COM
