In last week’s Hi Five we highlighted some significant moments from pop music history. Pop music has seen the rise of some of the biggest names in music history including The Beatles, Michael Jacson, Beyonce, NSYNC, The Rolling Stones and Britney Spears. This week we have brought to you a roundup of the careers of some of the greatest pop starts of the current century.

Initially Madonna joined music groups like Emmy and Breakfast Club. After going solo she released thirteen studio albums, six compilation albums, three soundtrack albums, four live albums, 11 extended plays, three remix albums, and 21 box sets. In 1982, Madonna signed a recording contract with Sire Records, a label owned by Warner Bros. Records. The first release under the label was her self-titled debut album, Madonna, in the year 1983 while her latest album released in 2012 is called MDNA, which became her eighth chart topper in the US. Madonna’s approach was far from the music industry wisdom of ‘Find a winning formula and stick to it.’ Her musical career has been a continuous experimentation with new musical ideas and new images and a constant quest for new heights of fame and acclaim. She has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world’s top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. She is ranked by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th Century and second topselling female artist in the United States, with 64.5 million certified albums. Her albums, The Immaculate Collection, Like a Virgin and True Blue, are among the top 100 certified, albums according to the RIAA.

Comprised entirely of white, middleclass boys including Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and A.J. McLean, the group found its greatest success in Canada and Europe, with their 1996 debut album charting in the Top Ten in nearly every country on the continent. Ironically, success in their native land did not follow until nearly two years later. The group rose to fame with their debut international album, Backstreet Boys. In the following year they released their second international album Backstreet’s Back, and their US debut album which continued the group’s success worldwide. They rose to superstardom with their third studio album Millennium and its follow-up album, Black & Blue. After a two-year hiatus, they regrouped and released a comeback album Never Gone. The group then released two albums as a quartet: Unbreakable and This Is Us. In 2013, they celebrated their 20th anniversary and released their first independent album, In a World Like This.

Their achievements include five Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, eleven MTV Europe Music Awards, and nineteen Teen Choice Awards out of nineteen nominations, among many others.

Justin Bieber released his debut EP, My World, in November 2009. It has been certified platinum in the United States. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut record to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Bieber released his first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, in March 2010. Fun facts about crows

Q: What do you call a single vampire? A: A bat-chelor

Q: Why didn’t the skeleton cross the road? A: He didn’t have guts

Crows have the biggest brain to body ratio among all bird species. Evolved with a highly developed forebrain, where intelligence is regulated, the anatomy of the crow brain is similar to humans. A test conducted in 2004 revealed that crows are cleverer than Bonobo chimpanzees. This fact made them the most intelligent creatures after humans, and hence, scientists call them ‘feathered apes’. Within the crow species, the smallest crow in the world is the Dwarf Jay from Mexico, about 21.5 cm long. It weighs 40g.

Q: When is it bad luck to meet a black cat? A: When you are a mouse

Q: What is a scarecrow’s favourite fruit? A: Strawberries

Q: What did the boy ghost say to the girl ghost? A: You sure are boo-tiful

The Common Raven (Corvus corax) and the Thick-billed Raven (Corvus crassirostris) of Ethiopia are the largest in the crow family. Both weigh about 1500g and have a length of 65 cm. Crows are very social and can even bond with humans. It has been noticed that crows forage the food disposed by humans. Moreover, they prove to be very useful when it comes to controlling pests that destroy crops. Crows have a very complex form of language and their distinctive ‘cawing’ has different meanings at different times. They have also been known to mimic sounds of other animals and can associate different commotions with different events.

? w o n k u o y d i D History of Toothpaste Egyptians are believed to have started using a paste to clean their teeth around 5000BC, before toothbrushes were invented. Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to have used toothpaste, and people in China and India first used toothpaste around 500BC. Ancient toothpaste was used to treat some of the same concerns that we have today — keeping teeth and gums clean, whitening teeth and freshening breath. The ingredients of ancient toothpastes were however very different and varied. They included a powder of ox hooves’ ashes and burnt eggshells that was combined with pumice. The Greeks and Romans favoured more abrasiveness and their toothpaste ingredients included crushed bones and oyster shells. The Romans added more flavouring to help with bad breath, as well as powdered charcoal and bark. The Chinese used a wide variety of substances in toothpastes over time that have included ginseng, herbal mints and salt. The development of toothpastes in more modern times started in the 1800s. Early versions contained soap and in the 1850s chalk was included. Betel nut was included in toothpaste in England in the 1800s, and in the 1860s a home encyclopedia described a home-made toothpaste that used ground charcoal. Prior to the 1850s, ‘toothpastes’ were usually powders. During the 1850s, a new toothpaste in a jar called a Crème Dentifrice was developed and in 1873 Colgate started the mass production of toothpaste in jars. Colgate introduced its toothpaste in a tube similar to modern-day toothpaste tubes in the 1890s. Until after 1945, toothpastes contained soap. After that time, soap was replaced by other ingredients to make the paste into a smooth emulsion. In the second half of the twentieth century modern toothpaste was developed to help prevent or treat specific diseases and conditions such as tooth sensitivity. Fluoride toothpastes to help prevent decay were introduced in 1914. Toothpastes with very low abrasiveness were also developed and helped prevent the problems caused by overzealous brushing. The most recent advances in toothpastes have included the development of whitening toothpastes, and toothpaste containing Triclosan which provides extra protection against caries, gum disease, plaque, calculus and bad breath. Toothpaste today typically contains fluoride, coloring, flavouring, sweetener, as well as ingredients that make the toothpaste a smooth paste, foam and stay moist. Individual toothpastes also may contain special ingredients. Toothpaste in tubes is used throughout the world and has been a very successful invention. SOURCE: COLGATEPROFESSIONAL.COM

World’s smallest snail species China has the smallest land snails. Researchers in in Guangxi Province in southern China have discovered a new species of land snail that measures a mere 0.86 mm in shell height. The species, called angustopila dominikae, is so small that 10 of the snails can fit into the eye of a needle. The tiny snails were found in a sample of soil at the base of a limestone cliff in Guangxi, just north of Vietnam. Many details about how the snails live are still unknown. Based on what’s known about other cave-dwelling snails, it’s likely these tiny creatures feed on microorganisms like bacteria and fungal filaments. It is also hypothesised that the round shape of the shells of these new species may allow these snails to wedge themselves into tiny cracks in rocks, or to float in water if necessary. As small as this snail species is, it doesn’t hold the record for smallest snail. That honor goes to ammonicera minortalis, a species of sea snail ranging in length from 0.32 mm to 0.46 mm. Water on Mars

Last month NASA announced the results of a new study showing that salty liquid water flows seasonally on Mars, giving the red planet one of the essential ingredients for life. The study, published online by Nature Geoscience, focuses on the mysterious recurring slope lineae, or “RSL” — narrow, streaky features on the planet’s surface spotted by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. While NASA has suspected that the RSL are made of salty brine, previous analyses of data from the spacecraft’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer have found neither salt nor water. The new study, however, is far more detailed. Researchers led by Lujendra Ojha of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology have found evidence for hydrated salts, likely magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate and sodium perchlorate, according to the study. “These soggy streaks suggest that there are vast reserves of underground water, presumably the last remains of lakes that may have once dotted the landscapes of this planet,” said Seth Shostak, senior astronomer and director of the Center for SETI Research, TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

World’s shortest body builder Hardest Mario level crossed A Japanese man filmed himself crying tears of happiness and shouting out joyously after finishing a notouriosly difficult level on Super Mario Maker. The game allows people to design their own Super Mario levels and the Pit of Panga: P-Break, level is thought to be the hardest created. It took its creator five hours to design and nine hours to beat and only six people of the 467,326 who have attempted have completed it. In the final few minutes of what must have been at least 10 hours of playing, the Japanese man had to steer Mario through complex manouveurs, jumping on falling objects and coming within inches of death. This is Choon Tan who, at just 4ft 10in, is Britain’s smallest bodybuilder. The 21-year-old has a genetic birth defect that affects bone development and stunted his growth. He spent years being bullied and teased over his slight frame. So Choon decided that even if he couldn’t change his height, he could change his body in another way — by bulking up. “I didn’t feel that I was as good or the same as everyone else. I got bullied and tormented because of it. Those several years were undoubtedly the worst of my life, but it is what led me to an incredible eye-opening journey,” he said. “Everything started to get to me and I just wanted it all to end. The Northumbria University student decided to bodybuild in the hopes it would help increase his self-confidence. He started training five times a week and changed his diet. Choon says the difference has not just been physical but also mental. He now brushes off any stupid remarks about his height and says now he is inundated with positive feedback. And his dedication has paid off — he is competing in the Men’s Physique section of the UK Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation competition. He also uses his Instagram account @ iamchoontan to inspire others. “My main ambition now is to inspire people to believe in themselves. And to know that they too can change their lives, no matter what the situation,” he said. MIRROR.CO.UK

Sara’s folly By Maryam Majeed One afternoon it suddenly started raining. Hamza and Sidra were busy with their homework, but little Sara had none and she was not even sleepy. Thrilled by the rain, she wanted to go out and play, but no one allowed her to. When their housekeeper, Rukhsana Apa, went off to sleep, little naughty Sara secretly ran out into the garden. It was full of water and she enjoyed splashing and rolling around in it. Seeing her having fun in the rain her friends Claire, Nathelie and Olivier also joined her. They even brought beach balls and some paper boats. Together they had a very wonderful time. They put the paper boats in the drains for a race, but very soon the boats got wet and torn. But nothing could dampen their moods. After some time, the rain gradually stopped and the sun came out. With the coming of the sun came a huge bright rainbow across the sky. Sara and her friends found it very beautiful and started counting the colours and announcing their favourites. Sara thanked God for the beautiful rainbow, the colours, the rain, the sun and for making them have so much fun. Then Sara — the wet little monkey — crept into her room, but then she sneezed and Rukhsana Apa caught her red-handed. She started scolding her and said that Sara would now surely fall ill. The little girl was scared and apologised to her as she changed into clean, warm, dry clothes. Sara had a great time playing in the rain and looking at the rain was very exciting. but she went down with very high fever because of getting wet. She felt miserable and disliked being in bed and having so many medicines and having to eat such dull food. She also felt very sorry for her parents who were worried for her. Sara learned her lesson and vowed to always listen to her elder’s advice as they always have a good reason for remaining cautious. Share your short stories with us. • Blue tack

• A plastic cup

• Water

• A paperclip

• Thick tissue or paper towel • A nail or little screwdriver

Directions: 1. Using the screwdriver put a hole through the centre of the cup from the inside. 2. Cut about 40cm of wool. 3. Tie a knot around the centre of the paper clip of the longest side.

Method: • Pre-heat oven to 200o C and place butter and sugar in large bowl and mix well.

4. Thread the other end through the top of the cup and pull so that the paper clip is at the top, with the wool hanging through. 5. Cut a pice of paper towel to the size of a 10 rupee note and wet in water.

• Add the egg and vanilla essence and mix again. • Sieve in flour and salt to mix and combine well. • Add the chocolate chips to the mixture.
