Hi light

While most of us dream of unusual careers, our definition of unusual may go as far as a professional ballet dancer or wildlife photographer. But that is not as far as it streches. It may take a lot of creativity, but by the looks of it, anything can turn into a career if you try hard enough. There are people out there who took the saying “If you do something well, don’t do it for free” very literally and have some pretty unusual jobs, some of which are truly mind boggling.

You threw batteries or other items into the trash, which you were not supposed to? Well, beware! Germany's garbage police might get you. Their job is to search other people's trash to find items that should have been disposed of differently. Germany has one of the world's toughest laws in that regard. And according to German TV channel , the detectives take their job quite seriously: They will ask your neighbours, examine shopping bills and observe your garbage cans to prove your wrongdoing.

You have no professional experience, but look good in a suit? You might qualify for a job as a fake executive in China. People who took the job said that the advertisment claimed “No experience necessary”. People are paid as much as $1,000 a week for simply being in China, shaking a few hands and watching movies. Recruiting fake businessmen is one way to create an image, particularly the image of connection that Chinese companies crave.

Officially, you’ll be called a “specialist for biological aviation safety,” but in practice, you’ll be a human scarecrow. Your daily routine: You receive a call that dozens of birds are waiting on a runway where a plane is about to land, so you rush to your car, fire several warning shots to disperse the bird crowd. Most of the time, however, you will try to prevent birds from even entering the vast properties of airports.

Although there are no specifics as to how to get hired, eHow confirms that there are fortune cookie writing jobs that exist. The requirements? Strong writing and communication skills, as well as a sense of humor. And don’t expect to get paid very handsomely. Fortune cookie writers need to be creative, inspiring and philosophical. They also need to write concisely to convey a message in just a few short words on a small piece of paper inside a cookie. Fortune cookie writers need strong writing and communication skills, as well as a sense of humor. Salaries vary based on their employment status and workload.

Just as with almost every other food production industry, a tester/taster is a necessary part of the production of pet food. In general, this is a trait of the more luxury and up-market brands, brands who want to be certain that they are meeting the high expectations and standards of their customers. So, as pets cannot communicate their level of satisfaction with the food they’re eating, or even suggest adding a bit more salt perhaps, humans must try their darnedest to do this for them. Now, it’s fairly clear that humans can’t fully speak for their furry counterparts in culinary matters, but a whole lot of research and experience means that a seasoned tester has a pretty good idea of what flavours and combinations will work and which won’t.

In Taiwan people like to have dramatic funerals which has sparked wealthy families to hire professional mourners to cry, sing and crawl on the ground to show their grief. This craze kicked off in the seventies when sons and daughters went off to work in the cities and couldn’t make it back for funerals. The parents would then hire replacement kids. While this was very popular years ago, it is now a dying trade.

After the Titanic tragedy in 1912, the International Ice Patrol was created to remove rogue icebergs and prevent any further incidents. Using satellites, radar and airplanes, the seas are searched for these icebergs and if any are found they are towed to an area where they do not pose a threat. Towing an iceberg can take up to 72 hours, as the boat needs ten hours to reach a speed of just one nautical mile (6076 feet) per hour.

A snake milker is someone who extracts or ‘milks’ venom from poisonous snakes in order to create antivenom used by hospitals and laboratories. If a person is bitten by a snake, it is important they be rushed to a hospital to get an antidote, which is made from the venom of a snake. Also, new medical research is showing that snake venom can be used to help in strokes and malignant tumors. A snake milker usually works at a serpentarium, where the snakes live. Snakes that are milked include cobras, mambas, vipers, asps, corals, copperheads, kraits, sea snakes and rattlesnakes.

As a stylist, you make breakfast, lunch and dinner look their best for photo and film shoots. Mixing your cooking skills with creative visual style, you use many tools — from lipstick and lard, to lacquer and lotion — to get a dish ready for its close-up. However, it’s not all about the artistic process: to protect your clients against legal issues, you’ve got to stay up to date on all truth in advertising laws.

Kids get really emotional about their toys. Remember when your favourite toy lost an arm, or suffered a similar life-threatening injury? It was devastating. But now there’s a special technician who can come to the rescue. The Build-A-Bear Workshops have a Teddy Bear Repair Technician who is hired to repair those much-loved teddy bears and get them back to their cuddly, intact, lovable selves.

erty Fun Facts about Statue of Lib

Q: What did the tree do when the bank closed? A: It started a new branch

Q: Why did the pine tree get into trouble? A: Because it was being knotty

Q: What did the little tree say to the big tree? A: Leaf me alone

While most people only know the statue as ‘Statue of Liberty,’ the full name is Liberty Enlightening the World. The name represents the country filled with possibilities, especially for the immigrants finding a new home in America. Most textbooks and other historical documents use the name Statue of Liberty. A portion of the Statue of Liberty made a debut at the World’s Fair in 1878. Although the statue’s construction was still in progress, the head took its place at the large fair in Paris. Many different workers and designers finished the base in New York City while the fair was taking place. Each spike in its crown represents a sea and a continent and each one is nearly nine feet tall and weighs more than 150 pounds. Officials have removed the spikes in the past to replace their supports. Originally designed to resemble a halo, also known as aureole, it ended up looking more like a crown.

Q: How can you tell that a tree is a dogwood tree? A: By its bark

The statue actually represents the Roman Goddess of Freedom. Frederic Bartholdi designed the statue and used his mother as a model for some parts of the statue, including the face. The robe on the statue is similar to the robe that the goddess reportedly wore.

Q: What kind of tree can fit into your hand? A: A palm tree

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper and at one time, it shined brightly like a penny. In time, the statue began to oxidize and form a green hue. The copper is very thin and covers the metal underneath. The copper’s thickness in less than that of two pennies stacked together.

? w o n k u o y d i D Trains: 1830 to 1900 In 1804, Richard Trevithick built a steam locomotive for his iron works at Penydarren in Wales. It was essentially built for a bet but it did manage to pull ten tonnes of iron. However, like most first models, it was highly unreliable. What he did encouraged others to improve on his design. In 1811, John Blenkinsop invented a steam engine which had cogs on one of its wheels. These gripped an extra rail laid down on the normal rail line and gave his engine more grip. In 1813 the ‘Puffing Billy’ was built by William Hedley to pull coal wagons at the Wylam Colliery in Northumberland. It was so reliable that it was used for fifty years. A man called George Stephenson lived in Wylam. His father looked after the pumping engine at the colliery. By the time George was fifteen, he was working on the same engine as his father. George Stephenson was fascinated by steam engines and in 1821 he was made engineer for the colliery. The owners of the colliery decided to build a rail line from Stockton to Darlington so that they could move their coal to a large market with more ease. Stephenson was given for the job of building this line. In 1825 the Stockton to Darlington rail line was opened. Two locomotives were used, the ‘Experiment’ and ‘No 1’ and they could pull 21 coal wagons 25 miles at 8 miles per hour. This was unheard of at the time and soon the line was in profit. Passengers were soon carried but steam trains did not operate on the line for passengers until 1833. In many ways, 1825 is seen as the start of the Age of the Railways. Later in 1826 George Stephenson was given a much bigger task — to build a railway between Manchester and Liverpool. However, the company financing the scheme was not convinced that steam trains would worked properly on this rail line. They organised a competition to find out what train and which type of train would be the best for their line. The competition was to be held at Rainhill near Liverpool. The Rainhill Trials took place in 1829. The winning train was the legendary ‘Rocket’ built by George Stephenson, it travelled at 46 kph — about 30 mph. He won £500. In 1830 the Liverpool to Manchester railway opened. The success of Stephenson’s train caught the public’s imagination and the so-called “Railway Mania” took place. Railways were seen as a way of earning a fortune. Between 1825 and 1835, the British parliament agreed to building 54 new rail lines. From 1836 to 1837, 39 new lines were agreed to. By 1900, Britain had 22,000 miles of rail track. Railways greatly helped industry. But not everybody approved of them. The Duke of Wellington feared that trains might encourage the poor and undesirables in society to come to London and that any trains coming from places such as Bath and Bristol had to pass near Eton School and that the pupils there might be disturbed. Some farmers believed that trains could cause cows to produce stale milk but trains did allow farmers to get their products to markets quicker and this was very important to farmers producing perishable goods. In 1838 Robert Stephenson, the son of George, completed the London to Birmingham rail line and later in 1841 Isambard Kingdom Brunel completed his London to Bristol line, which is now known as the Great Western Railway. This was such a stunning achievement that people used the rail line’s initials ‘GWR’ to call it ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’. SOURCE: HISTORYLEARNINGSITE.CO.UK

A bug’s life A tiny insect has gained viral fame after it convinced hundreds of thousands of viewers that it is actually an alien. The tiny black-coloured insect is uncannily reminiscent of the Bug aliens from Starship Troopers as it crawls creepily across its owner’s hand. But fear not, this is no alien from outer space — it is, in fact, a ghost mantis. Also known as Phyllocrania paradoxa, the insect usually has a dark brown body covered in leaf patterns. The natural habitat of the ghost mantis is Madagascar and Africa. The ghost mantis is a ‘sit-and-wait predator’ that relies on its camouflage. They mainly eat flies but are also partial to crickets, small grasshoppers and other insects. The video of the ghost mantis has more than 414,000 views since it was uploaded to Facebook on September 14, and many viewers are convinced the creature is from another planet. MIRROR.CO.UK

Reeling treasures

Five-year-old Avery was on a fishing trip with her dad when she caught the five-pound bass using a rather flimsy-looking pink plastic rod. Even better than the catch is Avery’s reaction to hooking the fish. The enthusiastic little girl is overcome with squeals as she reels in the whopper. “Did I get one?” she asks her dad. “Oh my gosh Avery, oh my gosh!” her dad cries out in unrestrained excitement. “Yes, yes, yes!!” cries the girl as she winds the spinner. “Help me!” she screeches as she begins to struggle against the fish. Eventually, her dad plucks the bass from the water and lays the 20-inch fish out on the boat, almost overcome with delight with his little girl’s effort. Her achievement is even more surprising given that bass have a reputation as slippery customers — as this fellow fisher can attest to. TELEGRAPH.CO.UK

Little champ Videos of toddler Arat Hosseini show him swinging from a trapeze at nine months old and performing backflips before his second birthday. The Iranian youngster, who turned two last month, has taken social media by storm with his crazy stunts and impressive flexibility and has more than 18,000 followers on Instagram. Arat’s parents Mohamad and Fatemeh, who live in Babol in the Mazandaran Province, say their son has had no professional training and practices for just 10 to 20 minutes daily. Mohamad said, “One day when I returned home from work and put my finger in Arat’s hand, he got up slowly and, gripping my finger very tightly, pulled his legs off the ground. At that time I noticed the strength and power Arat had and was very surprised. Arat’s favourite trick is performing a backwards somersault. He is very playful and does about 20 minutes of exercise a day. All the videos on our Instagram page show the first or second time he performed a trick. Usually he can do it easily after 10 minutes of practice.” Arat has perfected yoga poses such as balancing splits as well as more traditional gymnastic moves like backward walkovers and somersaults. Videos show the tiny tot performing press ups with 6.5kg of weights on his back and doing sit ups holding a large weight. “Arat is an extra special person and in sport he will be unattainable — he will succeed,” Mohamad said. “My wish is that Arat finds a lot of good friends in the world. Success is our goal and we can finish.” EXPRESS.CO.UK

The menace is back Mr. Wilson won’t be happy to hear this, but Dennis the Menace may finally be back home. A bronze statue of the rambunctious cartoon character was stolen in October, 2006 from a city park in in Monterey, California, the home town of its creator Hank Ketcham. No one knew what happened to the 3 1/2-foot, 200-pound statue until last month when it was found at Brothers Scrap Metals in Orlando, Florida. “Dennis” was menacingly close to being melted down until a relative of the scrap yard’s owner recognized the cartoon character and learned of the statue’s theft via the Internet. The statue arrived at City Hall on Tuesday and officials plan to award $5,000 to the scrapyard for recovering it. ‘Dennis’ is valued between $25,000 and $30,000, according to KION TV. However, Monterey Police first want to determine if the ‘Dennis’ statue is real or a duplicate.

My Mother’s Sacrifice By M Ibrahim Laeeq My mom only had one eye. She ran a small shop at the local flea market. She collected herbs from the mountainside to sell. I remember it was field day and my mom came to my school for the first time. How could she do this to me? Later that day I said to my mom, “Mom, why don’t you have the other eye? You’re going to embarrass me everywhere I go.” My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad but at the same time it felt good that I had said what I’d wanted to say all this time. My mom hadn’t punished me so it never occurred to me that I had hurt her feelings. That night I woke up and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I wanted nothing to do with my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I studied really hard and left my mother and came to a big city and got accepted in a famous university. I never returned to my village and married and settled down in the city. It had been years and I was living happily as a successful man. I liked it in the city because it didn’t remind me of my mom. Then one day, while at work, someone came to see me. As my secretary let the woman enter, I heard the buzz outside my office, “What? Who’s this?” It was my mother; it felt as if the whole world was falling apart. I asked her, “Who are you? I don’t know you,” I screamed at her “How dare you come to my workplace and scare my colleagues. Get out of here now!” To this, my mother quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and disappeared. Thank goodness she didn’t recognise me I thought, relieved. One day, a letter regarding a school reunion arrived. I lied to my wife saying that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to our old shack, just out of curiosity. I found my mother lying dead on the floor. I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand; it was a letter to me. It read: My son, I think my life has been long enough now. And I won’t visit the city anymore but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school. I’m sorry that I only have one eye and I was always an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye, so I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son seeing a whole new world in my stead. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple of times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, “It’s because he loves me.” I miss the times when you were still young and around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me. Love, Mom My world shattered right there. I had spent my life hating the person who only lived for me. I cried for my mother but to no avail, learning that day that there is more to people than meets the eye. Share your short stories with us. Email them to hifive@tribune.com.pk

THE EXPRESS TRIBUNE, OCTOBER 4, 2015

Material

Ingredients: Kiwi

1, peeled and chopped

Apple

1/2, peeled and chopped

Yoghurt

4 tbsp

Ice cubes

4-5

Method:

• Whizz the apple, kiwi and yoghurt together in a blender. • Pop the ice cubes into a tall glass.

• A large iron nail • About three feet of thin coated copper wire • A fresh D size battery • Some paper clips or other small magnetic objects.

Directions: 1. Leave about eight inches of wire loose at one end and wrap most of the rest of the wire around the nail. Try not to overlap the wires. 2. Cut the wire (if needed) so that there is about another eight inches loose at the other end too. 3. Now remove about an inch of the plastic coating from both ends of the wire and attach one wire to one end of a battery and the other wire to the other end of the battery. It is best to tape the wires to the battery — be careful though, the wire could get very hot! 4. Now you have an electromagnet! Put the point of the nail near a few paper clips and it should pick them up! Note: Making an electromagnet uses up the battery somewhat quickly which is why the battery may get warm, so disconnect the wires when you are done exploring.

• Pour the blended mixture over them. What is happening:

• Garnish with kiwi slices.

Remember kids, always get permission from your parents before you start. It’s always a good idea to have a helper nearby.

Most magnets, like the ones on many refrigerators, cannot be turned off, they are called permanent magnets. Magnets like the one you made that can be turned on and off, are called electromagnets. They run on electricity and are only magnetic when electricity is flowing. The electricity flowing through the wire arranges the molecules in the nail so that they are attracted to certain metals. Never get the wires of the electromagnet near a household outlet! Be safe — have fun! SOURCE: SCIENCEBOB.COM
