Karate Kids Karate Stances
Karate stances are common to all types of karate and karate forms. They keep the body balanced and stable and allow attacks and defences to be made with maximum effect. The three main karate stances are:
Side stance Kiba Dachi
Back stance Kokutsu Dachi
Karate Kit Karatekas wear a white cotton jacket (uwagi) and trouser known as karate gi. The shirt is tied on the waist with an obi (belt). The colour of the belt varies with the rank. The outfit is comfortable and loose to allow free movement. Karate, like other martial arts is also practiced barefoot. Beginners are given a white belt and as you become better at the art and are promoted to a new level the colour of your belt changes. In most schools of Karate, the black belt is the highest rank while some use the red belt as the highest rank.

Karate is a form of unarmed Japanese martial art developed from fighting methods from the Ryukyu Islands, what is now Okinawa, Japan. Karate is primarily a striking art, with punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques. According to legend, the evolution of karate began over two thousand years ago, in 5th Century AD when Bodhidharma (an Indian Buddhist monk) arrived in Shaolin-si (a small forest temple). Karate means ‘empty hands’ and refers to the fact that Karate originated as a system of self-defense relying on the effective use of the unarmed body of the practitioner (karateka). There are many styles and different moves involved in karate. Let’s take a closer look at some of the basic stances and strikes of karate.

Hi light
One of the most common and useful moves in nearly any martial art is the kick. There are multiple types of kicks, each with its own use. The ball all and the edge of the foot, the heel and the instep are all used as striking surfaces or in kicking. Karate kicks are delivered with one foot on the floor or both feet in the air. They can come from any direction; front, side or back.
Practicing karate stances brings stability and balance; it’s now time to learn some Karate arm strikes.
Front Kick The front kick in martial arts is a kick executed by lifting the knee straight forward, while keeping the foot and shin either hanging freely or pulled to the hip, and then straightening the leg in front of the practitioner and striking the target area.
Karate Punches Karate punches are similar to strikes. Of all the basic karate moves, punches are practiced the most. They are taught from the very first lesson and repeated over in most classes. For speed, most karate punches take the shortest path to the target, a straight line. The main point of impact of the karate punch is the two biggest knuckles of the fist.
The Karate Chop Of all Karate strikes the famous karate chop is by far the most popular. When karate first grabbed world attention in the 1960s the karate chop became the signature move.
Round Kick A roundhouse kick (also known as swinging kick or a power angle kick) is a kick in which the attacker swings his or her leg around in a semicircular motion, striking with the front of the leg or foot.

New superhero Captain Manchester a self-styled superhero has decided to dedicate his life to helping others after losing his job. From picking up litter to helping people carry their shopping bags, Captain Manchester says he was inspired by the superhero comics he reads to help people. “ It started as something to do to fill the time while I look for a new job,” he told a local newspaper.”I’ve got a bit of free time at the minute, so I have no problem helping out in the community or picking up a bit of litter and keeping the streets a bit cleaner,” he continued. The mystery man, who hands out business cards to members of the public, says his family has no idea about his secret life. He added: ‘My message to anyone inspired by Captain Manchester is — help someone out today. The young boy who chooses to keep his age a secret is helping a lot of people and helping to make the city cleaner, a great effort while he searches for a job. REUTERS.COM
Lego mini-me Police officer Rob Thomas is building a case of stolen identity brick by brick and he already has the offender’s number. The officer is being teased by colleagues who spotted his double – Lego’s new model policeman. His plastic mini-me comes complete with a lookalike moustache and even the same police ID number 1337 on his collar. “I just think it’s amazing he’s got the same number and bears such a resemblance to me. It really is astonishing,” said the 48-year-old, who has served with Hampshire police for 24 years. “One of my colleagues collects the Lego figures and found my doppelganger (double) as he opened the latest bag. He texted me about it and then when I clocked in for my next shift, there was the little Lego fellow waiting for me in my work tray.” The limited edition ‘constable’ mini figure, complete with hat and stick, boasts an image which any police officer would be happy with and looks exactly like Officer Rob Thomas. The Lego model claims he is an old-fashioned sort of policeman. “He knows every law by heart, he always keeps his uniform neat, and he only takes off his helmet in the presence of the Queen,” it adds. Lego said: “The fact that they share the same badge number is just the icing on the cake.” The police officer and his friends are fans of this Lego model. METRO.CO.UK

Caught green-faced A thief was caught not so much red-handed as green-faced in London after breaking into a car which sprayed him with a liquid that glows emerald under ultraviolet light. Yafet Askale, 28, denied entering the vehicle that police set up with a dye-trap in Harlesden, northwest London, to catch thieves in June. But he was found guilty of stealing objects inside the car after police produced photos showing his face covered with the liquid, invisible under normal light. Askale, from Harlesden, was sentenced to 49 hours of community service and ordered to pay 400 pounds (Rs69,000) costs on Friday. Police released photos of Askale on Monday, warning they had set up similar traps in the area in cars and houses. A smart and effective method to catch thieves. REUTERS.COM
Hide and seek When it’s time to shut them in the kitchen for the night or apply the flea medicine, cats have the ability of disappearing from view. While normally some cats would hide in the bathroom tub or under a bed, some cats are experts in hide and seek and have found the strangest places to hide in. A lot of cat owners posted photos of their cats hiding in odd places on social networking sites. Some of the most adventurous ones were two cats who slid inside a see-through box hoping the owner will not be able to find him. Another picture captured a cat at the back of a fridge hiding from its owners. There are even pictures of a cat hiding in a pool table pocket while another is poking its head out of a kitchen cupboard to make sure its owners do not find it. “Exploring is part of cats’ fundamental nature,” said cat expert Vicky Halls, but these cats have taken exploring to new adventure levels. Word Origins Tip You may have heard your parents leave ‘tip’ for the waiters that serve you in a restaurant. This definition of the word tip means gratuity or a sum of money as reward to someone for their services. However, the origin of the word ‘tip’ is quite different. In terms of the gratuity definition, it most likely comes from a popular form of speech among thieves and beggars called the ‘Thieves’ Cant’, which arose in Great Britain several hundred years ago with the primary aim of keeping nonthieves and the like from being able to fully understand what the thieves were talking about. One such slang word in this Thieves’ Cant was ‘tip’, meaning to give or to share. The first documented usage of ‘tip’ this way dates back to 1610. At some point within the next century, this sense of the word spread to being used by non-thieves as referring to money given as a bonus for services. The first documented instance of this definition popped up in 1706 in the George Farquhar play, The Beaux Stratagem, “Then I, Sir, tips me the Verger with half a Crown…” As to the ultimate origin of the word ‘tip’ in English, it first popped up in the 13th century meaning end, point or top, probably from the Middle Dutch word ‘tip’, meaning utmost point or extremity. Bamboo is the fastest-growing woody plant in the world; it can grow 35 inches in a single day. Tomato juice is the official state beverage of Ohio. During the 1600s, tulips were so valuable in Holland that their bulbs were worth more than gold. Vanilla flavoring comes from the pod of an orchid, Vanilla planifolia. Though the pods are called vanilla beans, they’re more closely related to corn. Pineapples were named such by European explorers who thought the fruit combined the look of a pinecone with flesh like that of an apple. Small pockets of air inside cranberries cause them to bounce and float in water. A pineapple is a berry. Peanuts are a type of bean.
