2 World Wide Wrestling Hi light

Wrestle Me Wrestling is a form of combat sport. It is a physical competition between two competitors. There are a wide range of styles and rules with both traditional and modern styles. Wrestling can be a real competition or an act for entertainment. WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), an American company, started airing professional wrestling on TV in 1963. Wrestlers fight each other as part of an entertainment act. Steve Austin, John Cena and The Undertaker all wrestled for WWE. Other countries followed WWE and gave entertainment wrestling their own local twist such as Mexicans (Lucha libre) and Japanese (Puroresu). Pakistan however, has a traditional form of wrestling known as kushti.

Puroresu What is it? Puroresu is the popular term for professional wrestling that has developed in Japan. The term comes from the Japanese pronunciation of ‘professional wrestling’ and is shortened to puroresu. How to play? Despite the similarity to its American equal (WWE) in that the outcome of the matches is set before the match starts, Japanese pro wrestling is different in its presentation of the sport. It is treated as a fight, with fewer stunts and acts; the stories told in Japanese matches are about a fighter’s spirit and strength. Wrestlers use martial arts techniques to fight their opponent. Rules Puroresu has a lot of different rules, which are different from wrestling in other countries. Every promotion (match) has its own different set of rules and there is no one order that all matches follow. Famous wrestlers Rikidōzan was known as the ‘father’ of puroresu.

Kushti What is it? Kushti is traditional Pakistani wrestling. In Urdu, the wrestlers are called pehalwan. How to play? Two men stand barefoot in a square field measuring at least 14 feet. At the referee’s signal, they start circling each other, their eyes closely following the movements of their, opponent. One of the two men makes the first move and attacks the other. They then attack each other with full force and bump into each other. Kushti techniques generally consist of crossing the arms and using legs to twist and turn the opponent’s body. It is different from wrestling in other countries in that the winner is not determined before the match starts and rather than using modern mats, pehalwans compete on dirt floors. Rules Pehalwans are not allowed to kick each other but can throw and pin the opponent. A win is achieved by pinning the opponent’s shoulders and hips to the ground at the same time, although victory by giving in, surrender, is also possible. Popular Pehalwans Some great names in Pakistani Kushti are Bholo, Jhara, Akki and Teli Pehalwan. ILLUSTRATION: JAMAL KHURSHID

Towering over Bristol-based graduate Tom Holmes set a new Guinness World Record after creating the world’s tallest free standing domino tower that reached 5.275m at its peak. It took the record breaker 7.5 hours and 2,688 dominos to complete the towering task. The final result was almost 20cm taller than the previous record and would tower above the average Double Decker bus by over a metre. “As engineers, we’re constantly looking for creative solutions to solve problems so it’s great to put my skills to use in a fun task like this,” he explained. “It’s not every day that you can say you’ve built the world’s largest domino tower.” He spent months planning the project with Roland Trim, a colleague at design and engineering consultancy firm Arup. “Like on any project, we tested our theories before starting construction,” Trim told Arup.com. The pair now wants to break their own record by attempting to build a 6m domino tower. METRO.CO.UK

Superheroes to the rescue

Two men dressed as Batman and Captain America rescued a cat from a fire. The two friends named John Buckland and Troy Marcum, had been working at children’s event nearby when they saw smoke coming out of a house in Milton, West Virginia. In true superhero fashion, the two friends rushed to see if anyone was inside the home and found a pet cat trapped inside. Buckland runs an organisation called Heroes 4 Hire that uses costumed superheroes to spread positive messages to kids. When he and Marcum saw the fire, they knew it was time to turn their teachings into action. Buckland, a former firefighter, said his training immediately came to use and he grabbed the cat then pulled it outside to safety. The occupants of the home were out of town and only the cat was home at the time of the fire. “I just want to know what’s going through that cat’s mind. I’m just glad that nobody else was in that house,” said Buckland. METRO.CO.UK

Want to pizza this? A 1,340-calorie pizzaburger has made its way on to the menu of an American diner because ‘some things just belong together’. The heavenly partnership has been created for the Boston’s Gourmet Pizza Restaurant by placing a half-pound burger within a cheese or pepperoni pizza. A traditional burger pickle accompanies the meat, along with a pizza base of mozzarella and pizza sauce. Called the ‘frankenburgers,’ the creations were initially launched in the spring at a Canadian branch and proved to be so popular that they are now being offered to all 40 branches in Boston. “It is the best thing I have ever tasted,” claimed a happy customer. Swan Spy Egyptian authorities have kept a swan in their custody after a citizen suspected the bird of spying. Officials say a man brought the bird to a police station believing it to be an undercover agent because it carried an electronic device. Mohammed Kamal, head of security in Qena, said that officials examined the bird and concluded that the device was probably a wildlife tracker, not an explosive or spying device. This is not the first time feathered creatures have been kept in Egyptian police’s custody as earlier a pigeon was suspected of being a spy for carrying a microfilm. In 2010, eyebrows were also raised after Egyptian officials claimed Turkey had sent sharks to spy on them. HUFFINGTONPOST.CO.UK

Word Origins OMG As many of you already know, OMG is the abbreviation for Oh My God, which became popular in the twenty-first century. However, the source of this abbreviation was not some popular TV show or celebrity, but a 75-year-old British admiral! His name was John Arbuthnot ‘Jacky’ Fisher and he coined the term while writing his memoirs in 1917. Almost 100 years ago. The exact phrase was: “I hear that a new order of Knighthood is on the tapia — OMG (Oh! My God!) -- Shower it on the Admiralty!” It’s ironic, that one of the most popular abbreviations in the world was created by someone who didn’t quite grasp the concept of using the acronyms (word formed from the initial letters of other words) to save time, since he immediately followed the term with the phrase it was supposed to shorten. However, when you think about it, it makes perfect sense that someone in the navy would create something like this: In olden days, ships’ primary form of communication was Morse code — a system that, like early texting, required each letter to be painfully spelled out. Navy men were used to abbreviations, and thus likely to come up with some of their own.
