PUPPET PLAY
From birthdays to school melas, childhood is incomplete without a puppet show. Puppets are non-living objects or characters manipulated and animated by puppeteers. Puppetry is a form of theatre or performance that involves puppets. Puppetry is an ancient form of performance and entertainment and takes many forms but all share the process of animating non-living objects. Pakistan has its own puppetry as well, including a Pakistani version of Sesame Street — Sim Sim Humara. Now let’s take a closer look at the puppetry Pakistan has to offer: Sim Sim Humara Sim Sim Humara is the Pakistani version of the children’s television series Sesame Street, a collaboration of Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop (RPTW) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The show which began airing in December 2011 on PTV was supposed to have 78 episodes but due to the canceling of funding had to stop airing. The show included Elmo and a host of new Pakistani characters. The aim of the program was to increase education among children. Sesame Street has had many co-productions around the world and the one in Pakistan is the first localised version in the country itself. Uncle Sargam Uncle Sargam is a puppet created by an award winning pupeeteer and television director Farooq Qaiser and was voiced by him as well. Uncle Sargam first appeared in the children’s television show Kaliyan aired on PTV in 1976 and has made many appearances on TV shows and carnivals and children’s events since. He remains one of the most popular puppets of Pakistan.

Types of Puppets
Carnival puppets are usually designed to be part of a parade and are at least the size of a human or much larger. A performer is dressed as a puppet and entertains people. Carnival puppets can be spotted in Disney World parades and even birthday parties. Glove puppets or muppets are puppets controlled by one hand. The puppeteer’s hand is inserted in the puppet’s head and he control’s the puppet’s mouth and head. The rest of the puppet’s body covers the arm of the puppeteer. Human-arm puppet also called a ‘two-man Muppet’ or a ‘live-hand puppet’, is similar to a glove puppet but is larger and requires two puppeteers. One puppeteer places a hand inside the puppet’s head and operates its head and mouth while the second puppeteer puts their arm into the glove and special sleeve attached to the puppet in order to operate the other puppet’s arms. This way, the puppet can perform hand movements as well. String puppets consist of a cloth body where in the puppeteer puts his/her arm into a slit in the back and pulls rings on strings that do certain tasks such as waving or moving the mouth.

Museum of Puppetry
The Museum of Puppetry located in Lahore houses over 4,000 puppets from 32 different nations. Constructed and managed by the RPTW, it is a unique museum where the master pieces of international puppeteers from different cultures and backgrounds are exhibited in order to preserve this art. The Museum provides a permanent forum for the promotion of puppetry through various means. It offers a wide range of activities including print/ video reference material, lectures, workshops and seminars, publications, preservation of folk puppet theatre, organisation of puppet plays and festivals on local, national and regional level, promotion of educational activities and awareness of social issues through puppetry.

The International Folk Puppet Festival is an annual event, celebrating folk puppeteers, story tellers and local crafts organised by Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop. The festival aims to promote traditional folk arts and performers of Pakistan and other countries. The event is quite informative for the puppetry fanciers in terms of new techniques and different kinds of handheld and string puppets introduced by foreign groups. The traditional Pakistani puppeteers also grab attention at the festival with their story-telling methods and film songs they use as background music to their performances. Puppets dressed in colourful traditional clothing are also sold to represent cultures.

Unfold the folds.

In the same way drag the other corner to the centre.
Fold the bottom upward.

Posh kick-out A group of civilised teenagers was asked to leave McDonald’s after bringing cutlery and candles to the restaurant. Cameron Ford and Adam Welland were out enjoying a fancy meal in the fast food restaurant in Kingston, only to be disturbed for bringing extras including a tablecloth, fake candles, glasses and even a table centrepiece made out of straws. Staff disapproved of the ambience and more specifically customers bringing in their own cutlery in the fast food chain. Dive into crisps
Crisp lovers can now literally dive into a bag after a manufacturer produced one the size of a caravan that can be filled by two million potato crisps. The world recordbreaking Corkers Crisps packet measures 7.6m by 3.8m and, when fully filled, tips the scales at 1,140kg (2,513lb). It took a group of workers 20 hours to fry the amount of crisps needed to fill the sea salt flavoured bag at the company’s state-of-the-art factory in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Rod Garnham, chief executive at Corkers Crisps, said: “As is normal with a world record attempt, we’ve had a few issues. The first bag attempt failed.” He continued, “It is big — if you stood in the top window of your house and looked out, it would be higher than that.” Lucky employees at the Cambridgeshire factory will get to share the crisps once the packet is dismantled and money raised from the Guinness World Records will go to children’s cancer charity Liam Fairhurst Foundation. Boxed-orghini A Lamborghini built out of cardboard and paper is the latest work from Taras Lesko, whose previous models include a cardboard robot from cartoon series Gundam Wing, which was 7ft tall. The Seattle designer made the copy of the sports car using computer software, including AfterEffects and Adobe Photoshop. Once he had designed the different elements of the car he printed them on a few hundred paper sheets before cutting them out using a special paper cutter. To prevent the 11.3kg model vehicle from falling down, Lesko used a strong base made of chipboard. The copy of the luxury car, which took months to complete, has impressed viewers on YouTube. Now, that is big! A liger (cross between a tiger and a lion) has officially been recognised as the world’s biggest cat, measuring an incredible 10 feet in length and weighing 922 pounds. The liger named Hercules casts a shadow over his keepers at Myrtle Beach Safari wildlife preserve in South Carolina. Guinness Book of World Records has given it the title of the world’s largest cat.
