2 Leonardo
Michelangelo Nicknamed Mike or Mikey, Mich M c elangelo is named after a famous Italian painter, poet and architect. He is the least mature of the four brothers. But he has a great sense of humour, and is very adventurous. His love of pizza is also legendary. Mikey wears an orange mask and wields a pair of nan a chakus — a martial arts weapon consisting of two sticks connected by a short chain or rope.
Turtles with superpowers Once upon a time a little boy was walking along the streets of New York City. In his hands was a jar filled with water, with four baby turtles in it Suddenly it. S dd l there th is i a traffic t ffi accident id t and a big truck spills the toxic waste it is carrying. In the commotion, the boy drops the jar and the turtles inside get swept into the underground sewers along with the radioactive waste. The waste mutated each of the turtles. In the sewers, the turtles meet a rat called Splinter who has also been mutated. The rat becomes their sensei (the Japanese word for teacher) and trains the turtles to become ninjas.
1984 Artists Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman come up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the form of a comic book.
Named after the famous Italian painter, inventor and engineer Leonardo Da Vinc n i,i Leo is th t e leader of the team. He is courageous, authoritative, and a dedicatted e s udent of the martial arts. He fe st eel es r sponsible for his three brothers re and wants to take care of them. Leonardo wears a blue mask and his weap pon o s of choice are two long, razor-sharp swords.
Raphael Raphael (also known as Raph) is the ‘bad boy’ of the team, because of his aggressive nature. Raph is physically strong and very impulsive, so he never hesitates to throw the first punch h. But at the same time, Raph is intensely loyal to his brothers and to his sensei and will go to any lengths to protect them. He is named after the Ita alian painter and architect of the same name. Raph wears a red mask and his weapon is a pair of sai, which is a martial arts weapon consisting of a pointed, prong-shaped sword.
Donatello Kn nown as Don or Donnie, Donatello is the scientist and inventor of th he group. He is a technological genius and d prefers to solve problems by using hi h s intellect and knowledge rather than resorting to mindless violence. This makes Don the least violent of the Ninja Turtles. Don wears a blue mask and wields a bo staff, a very long stick often used in the martial arts, as his weapon.
What’s green, lives in the sewers, eats pizza and fights crime? If you guessed any one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you’d be right. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (also known as tmnt or Ninja Turtles) are a team of four teenage turtles trained in the art of ninjutsu (which is basically the art of being a ninja). Armed with the knowledge of martial arts, the ninja turtles protect their city from criminals, evil warlords, mutated animals and even alien invaders. The characters were created in 1984 as part of a comic book series. Eventually, they became so popular that they had their own multiple television series, video games and movies, the latest of which was just released last month. Read on to find out all about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had many incarnations since they have been created. From comic books to animated television series, from video games to live action films, each representation of the ninja turtle team is exciting in its own way.

Classic Children’s Books That Were Banned Reading is one of the most powerful things you can do. Reading books gives you ideas, it can make you see the world from a whole new point of view. Because of the power of books, different people throughout history have tried to stop people from reading. Such people are usually those in authority, such as governments or schools. Certain books have been banned throughout the world for various reasons. But reading books is a freedom everyone should be entitled to, and this is why the Banned Books Week was launched in 1982. Every year for a week, the world celebrates the freedom to read and spreads awareness about books that have been banned. The Banned Books Week 2014 took place last week (21 to 27 September). In honour of the occasion, here is a list of children’s favourite books that have been banned for silly reasons over the years. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — The classic book written by Lewis Carroll tells the story of Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a magical place populated by peculiar animals that can talk. This book was banned in a province of China because it gave human-like abilities to animals and the Chinese government thought this was an insult to humans.
Bridge to Terabithia — This is a book written by Katherine Patterson which is about two children who make up a magical kingdom in a forest near their homes. The book was banned in some parts of USA because certain people were worried that its rich fantasy world might lead to confusion among children about what’s real and what’s fiction.
Harriet the Spy — Written by Louise Fitzhugh, this is a story about a girl who wants to be a spy so she goes around secretly spying on people in her neighbourhood and jotting down her observations in a notebook. People who wanted to ban the book complained that it taught children to lie, spy and talk back.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory — This Roald Dahl classic is a favourite of children of all ages. The story is about a boy who wins a golden ticket to the greatest chocolate factory in the world run by the eccentric Willy Wonka. This book was banned in some places which felt that it embraced a “poor philosophy of life.”
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz — Written by L. Frank Baum, this is the famous story of a girl Dorothy who is swept up in a tornado and ends up in the magical land of Oz where she befriends a scarecrow, a tin man and a cowardly lion. This book was banned in parts of USA because it depicted women in strong leadership roles, something that was considered “ungodly” in those days.

Butterfly the geep What do you get when you crossbreed a goat with a sheep? A geep, and there is one in Arizona, USA who is melting hearts across the internet. The geep is named Butterfly. Butterfly’s mother is a sheep and her father is a pygmy goat. She was born at My Petting Zoo in Scottsdale, much to the surprise of the zoo owner, Priscilla Motola. Motola says that when she and her children went to feed the animals one morning, they found what they believed to be a newborn goat. But upon closer look, they discovered that the baby was actually a sheep’s. Butterfly, named for her large black spots, has the feet and face of a goat but the wool and tail of a sheep. The adorable geep is causing quite a stir on social media. METRO.CO.UK
Doc McStuffins — the new Barbie Forget Barbie, the new cool doll to have is Disney’s Doc McStuffins, a toy line which is based on the Disney Junior TV character Dottie “Doc” McStuffins, a young girl who plays doctor with her stuffed animals. The Doc McStuffins set the record for the bestselling toy line based on an African-American character. Not only is the doll one of the few African-American dolls to become popular, but it is also noteworthy because it has inspired a lot of little girls to wear stethoscopes and pretend to be doctors during playtime. In a time where all toys are strictly either for girls or for boys, the science and technology-related toys are often in the boys section, which can send the wrong message to girls that they can’t pursue science-related interests. But Doc McStuffins is changing all that. The character mimics her mother (who is a doctor) and treats her stuffed animals on the TV show. TIME.COM

India goes to Mars
India’s first space mission to Mars, a Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) which is called Mangalyaan (Sanskrit for “Mars Craft”), reached the orbit of the planet on September 24, 2014, making India the first Asian country to achieve such a feat. The Mangalyaan has been travelling in space for 300 days, covering 670 million kilometres. If it succeeds in landing on Mars, it will be the first ever space mission to land on the Red Planet on its maiden attempt (USA and Russia both failed their maiden attempts). The Mangalyaan is an unmanned robotic mission which was launched from the rocket port in the Bay of Bengal in India in November 2013. The aim of this mission is to study the atmosphere of Mars and to search for methane gas as well as to figure out whether there is life on the Red Planet. BBC.COM

6 Word Origins Ring a Ring o’ Roses Almost all of us have played Ring a Ring o’ Roses when we were little. You hold hands and move in a circle and at the end everyone falls down to the floor. But where did this nursery rhyme originally come from? Because this famous nursery rhyme goes back almost two centuries (it was written in 1881), there are several theories surrounding its origin and not a lot of proof about which theory is correct. But the alleged backstory of Ring a Ring o’ Roses is very intriguing. The most popular theory says that the lyrics of the nursery rhyme (which have undergone certain changes over the years) actually refer to the Black Plague that hit London in 1665. The Black Plague refers to the breakout of a deadly disease, the bubonic plague, due to which a huge number of people in London died. The word ‘roses’ in the lyrics was actually ‘rosie’ which referred to a red rash that appeared on the skin of people who got the disease. ‘A pocketful of posies’ referred to the sweet smelling herbs that were carried around in pockets because it was believed that the disease spread due to bad smells. ‘A-tishoo A-tishoo’ mimicked the sneezing that occurred as part of the symptom and the end where everyone falls down is supposed to refer to people succumbing to the disease. But while this theory seems deliciously dark and interesting, folklorists (people who study the origin of folk tales and nursery rhymes) believe that it’s not really true. A more plausible origin story, according to them, is the ban on dancing that occurred in English in the 19th century. To avoid this ban and go on dancing, people began to play ring games which were similar to dances, only without music accompanying it.

The unicorn is the official animal of Scotland. Cows have best friends and become anxious when they are separated. If you could drive a car straight up into the sky at 60 mph, it would take about an hour to reach space, and about six months to reach the moon. Your pupils can expand by as much as 45% when looking at someone you love. When looking at stars, you’re actually looking into the past. Many of the stars we see at night have already died. Walking on Eggs You will need: • A few dozen eggs that are in egg cartons (Select large-sized eggs) • A large plastic trash bag • Barefoot friends
1
The phrase ‘walking on eggshells’ is an idiom that is often used to describe a situation in which people must tread lightly around a sensitive topic for fear of offending someone or creating a volatile situation, implying that eggshells are extremely fragile. But what if eggs were really much stronger than most of us imagine? Here’s an experiment to find out.
3
What to do: 1. If you just want to attempt the feat of standing on eggs, you’ll only need two cartons of eggs (two dozen eggs). If, however, you’re feeling up to the Walking on Eggs challenge, pick up six or eight cartons of large-sized eggs. 2. Spread the plastic trash bag (or bags) out on the floor and arrange the egg cartons into two rows. 3. Inspect all of the eggs to make sure there are no breaks or fractures in any of the eggshells. Make any replacements that might be necessary. 4. It’s important to make sure all of the eggs are oriented the same way in the cartons too. One end of the egg is more pointy while the other end is more round. Just make sure that all of the eggs are oriented in the same direction. By doing this, your foot will have a more level surface on which to stand. 5. Remove your shoes and socks. Find a friend to assist you as you step up onto the first carton of eggs. The key is to make your foot as flat as possible in order to distribute your weight evenly across the tops of the eggs. If the ball of your foot is large, you might try positioning it between two rows of eggs instead of resting it on the top of an egg. 6. When your foot is properly positioned, slowly shift all of your weight onto the egg-leg as you position your other foot on top of the second carton of eggs. No matter how long you walk on the eggs, they won’t break.
What is happening:
2
The shape of the egg is the secret. The egg’s unique shape gives it tremendous strength, despite its seeming fragility. The egg is the strongest at the top and the bottom. If you hold an egg in your hand and squeeze it at the top and the bottom, the egg doesn’t break because you are adding pressure to the ends which are the strongest parts of the egg. The curved form of the shell also distributes pressure evenly all over the shell rather than concentrating it at any one point. If you completely surround the egg with your hand and then squeeze, the pressure you apply by squeezing is distributed evenly all over the egg. However, eggs do not stand up well to uneven forces, which is why they crack easily on the side of a bowl. SOURCE: STEVESPANGLERSCIENCE.COM
