Hi light

s a y a l a m i H In geography class you must have been taught about the Himalayas — the mountain range in Asia. The Himalayas cross through five countries namely Bhutan, India, Nepal, China and Pakistan, and are home to some of the highest peaks in the world. The Mount Everest and K2 are just some of these peaks. Three of the world’s major rivers, including the Indus River, also cross the Himalayas. Let’s take a closer look at the peaks and passes of the Himalayas.

Travel Guide Adventure Travel Pakistan (ATP) and Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) take groups of people on tours of the highest peaks in Pakistan including K2 and Nanga Parbat. If you are adventurous and want to climb these mountains, contact them on the details below. PTDC email: info@tourism.gov.pk ATP email: info@adventurepakistan.com

Karakoram Highway The Karakoram Highway is the highest international road in the world. It connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram Range (mountain range that crosses India, Pakistan and China), through the Khunjerab Pass, at an elevation of 4,693m (15,397ft). And also serves as a popular tourist attraction. The Khunjerab Pass is the highest international border crossing in the world and is the highest point on the Karakoram Highway. The roadway across the pass was completed in 1982. Due to its height and the narrow roads, it is considered one of the most dangerous routes in the world.

Mount Everest is the Earth’s highest mountain, with a peak at 8,848m (29,029ft) above the sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas, at the border between China and Nepal. Mount Everest attracts many highly experienced mountaineers as well as capable climbers. There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal and the other from the north in Tibet. Mount Everest does not pose challenges while climbing on the standard route, but presents dangers such as altitude sickness, wind and avalanches.

K2 is the second highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest. It is located on the border of northern Pakistan and China. With a peak elevation of 8,611m (28,251ft), K2 is the highest point of the Karakoram Range and the highest point in Pakistan. K2 is known as the ‘Savage Mountain’ as it is extremely difficult to climb.

Say no to animal print A wildlife park has banned visitors from wearing leopard print clothing — because it is confusing the animals. Chessington World of Adventures Resort’s zookeepers noticed the trend for animal print clothing had caused animals to try to communicate with those wearing it — or to run away in fear. The ban follows the launch of a new experience ‘ZUFARI: Ride into Africa!’ which allows visitors to journey off-road on a safari adventure and meet the animals face to face. Since the launch, Chessington’s zookeepers have noticed the wildlife ‘becoming puzzled’ when spotting visitors that look like them. Zookeepers ZUFARI spokeswoman, Natalie Dilloway, said: “ZUFARI lets visitors get so close to wild species that if someone wears the same pattern to the animal’s coat they can become over friendly. If they wear the pattern of its predator, it has the opposite effect and the animals become afraid and run away.” In light of this, the resort does not allow people wearing animal print clothes inside the zoo. Batdad Masked dad Blake Wilson has shot to fame on social networking websites following heart-warming videos in which he puts Batman into the position of father. Employing the character’s deep voice, he lightly scolds his children and makes them do their homework while pretending to be the superhero. First, he used to try and copy Batman’s actions while wearing his mask but when his family did not enjoy his acts he decided to be a super-dad instead. He does everything according to what Batman would have done if he had kids. His children happily listen to him and think he is the coolest dad ever. DAILYMAIL.CO.UK

Cycle away Ninety-year-old Bert Blevens finished a 1497’ kilometres long marathon on a cycle from Kentucky to Florida. It took him 21 days to cruise across Tennessee, Georgia and most of Florida because his tricycle is not permitted on highways, a newspaper reported. “I feel great. I feel relaxed, I feel good. I’m not as tired as I thought I’d be, but I might take a little rest,” Blevens told a newspaper. Blevens’ son accompanied him during the first half of the journey, after which his daughter, Beth, stepped in to give her father company for the rest of the distance. Beth says there were times when she was not sure they were going to make it. This is a very big achievement especially if you are 90 years old. METRO.CO.UK

I’m not that old! The moon just got younger — by a few hundred million years. Scientists now claim that the moon is around 4.4 and 4.45 billion years old, rather than the 4.56 billion years previously thought. Despite being the nearest body to the Earth, astronomers are still not sure precisely how or when it formed. Scientists have long studied the moon’s rocks to try and estimate its age. As methods have improved, the most precisely determined age for the lunar rocks that arose is 4.360 billion years, the researchers said. Meanwhile on Earth, scientists have found signs of a major melting event that occurred around 4.45 billion years ago. From this, researchers have drawn the conclusion that the collision that formed the moon occurred around 100 million years or so before. However, scientists are carrying out further research. Word Origins BOYCOTT To boycott someone or something is to refuse to buy goods from them or not engage in activities with them. But did you know boycott is a word that comes from a person’s name? Captain Charles Boycott, who managed the Irish estates of the Earl of Erne, was a landlord in County Mayo, Ireland. In September 1880, Erne’s tenants and labourers were demanding lower rents, and Boycott expelled them. In response, people of the county refused to rent a farm or work for Boycott. They even refused to deliver Boycott’s mail to him. Boycott managed to get the autumn crop harvested, but at a loss, and by the end of the year he moved to England. The word was coined by one or more of the local people who were expelled. The first recorded use of the verb is in the Glasgow Herald of 1 November 1880. The noun appears in the Times (London) on 9 December. The speed with which the word ‘boycott’ caught on is amazing and it is widely used today to define the refusal to buy, use or engage with someone or something.

Cool facts Rabbits and parrots can see behind themselves without even moving their heads. Humans get a little taller in space because there is no gravity pulling down on them. Because of the unusual shape of their legs, kangaroos and emus struggle to walk backwards. A hippopotamus may seem huge but it can still run faster than a man. Sneezing with your eyes open is impossible. Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older. Typewriter is the longest word that can be written using the letters on only one row of the keyboard. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. Starfish don’t have brains. A cat has 32 muscles in each ear. Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur.
