Anushey Hasham The spectacular colour palette in Anushey’s silhouette has us swooning! We love the contemporary cuts in an ensemble that retains its old-world charm.

Bakhtawar Malik Bakhtawar looks super-pretty in a full-embellished, dusty pink lengha choli by Deena Rahman. Don’t miss the laser-cut detailing on her choli!

Hajra Sami Hajra makes a statement in an all-red ensemble. We love that she lets the bold colour do all the talking, and keeps the rest of her look understated. Extra points for the matching lipstick!

Maliha Aziz Jamil Maliha looks fun and festive in her Farah Talib Aziz silhouette. Though she keeps her accessories simple, she shines in this vibrant design.

Nishay Shafi Trust Nishay to make a statement even in a minimal, pink lengha choli. We love the way she uses a brown, fur scarf to up the glam-quotient!

What is the one country you want to visit and why? Italy, because I have to meet Giorgio Armani before he dies. What is the last book you read? I just finished Superfreakanomics, and I am about to start, History of God by Karen Armstrong. What is your dream vacation? Anywhere where my family is chilling, and is also being taken care of. What are three reasons why one should tune into your radio show? It has got great music! There is very little conversation, but great music.

Would you rather lick peanut butter off a hobos feet or be stuck in a jail with a lion? Peanut butter, any day! Actually, it depends on my mood — if I want to die then I would choose to be in a room with a lion.

What is the last thing you do before bed? I say my prayers or I spend time with my children — sometimes both.

What is your favourite TV show? Suits, The Big Bang Theory and House.

Who is the one person you would like to work with, that you have not already? Giorgio Armani.

What is the last photo in your camera roll?

Caramel popcorn or salted popcorn? That depends on my mood, but I usually prefer salted.

It is of a Mercedes that I am thinking of buying.

What did you want to be as a child? A businessman.

What is the one word that should be banned?

How do you take your tea or coffee? Black, which is how it’s supposed to be.

FASHION

WITH KHUBAN OMER KHAN The fashionable managing director at Farida Hasan, talks about the evolution of her wardrobe, which has resulted from the changes in her physique over the years

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

44

JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4 2017

How would you describe your body type? I would say I’m skinny-fat. Has your body type changed over the last five years? I used to be really fit. Even after I had my son, I was still really fit. Then I hit my 30s and every year since then I’m irreversibly gaining weight. The fact that I am unable to diet doesn’t help either.

How do you dress your body according to your body type? Loose tops are all I need to appear slimmer than I am. Luckily I have a deceptively thin face, so even when I’ve gained weight, people can’t tell. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I find dressing over-the-top for lunches and teas, especially at restaurants in Lahore, really inappropriate.

How has your style changed over the years? In college I was mostly a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl, and I never wore heels. Now I feel I’m more confident and more experimental in the way that I dress. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My tummy!

Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think all silhouettes suit me just fine, as long as they are not too body hugging. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing? Plunging necklines!

THE VAULT WITH MEHR AZIZ

The creative head of Mehr Aziz Studio talks about her love for jackets, taking us through her special, personal collection

How/when did you get interested in jackets? It’s always a struggle to find the right staple jacket for the winter season. Everyone ends up buying a solid black or brown jacket, thinking they can wear it with all their outfits, but I wanted to explore something fun and creative. Hence, I decided to start a line focusing on jackets. What is your favourite jacket of your own? A recently designed, trendy bomber jacket is my favourite these days. It is velvet, with a deer embroidered in gold thread onto a suede patch. The leather stripes on the sleeves give it an extra oomph. It’s a very versatile piece, I can wear it to a lunch with jeans, or with matching separates for an evening look. Where did you get them? Extremely skilled craftsman handcraft all my jackets. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? A velvet coat that I made for my mother is very special to me. It uses a bottle-green, velvet fabric, with authentic Kashmiri embroidery on the collar and the pockets. It makes her look very smart and I loved making it for her. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces: One of my favourite designs is a laser-cut, embellished shirt. It was very exciting to work with fabric on a CNC machine, and the results were as intricate as I wanted. Layering that jacket with other materials was also tricky, but I think the outcome was amazing — a great mix of traditional and contemporary techniques. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get/make in the future? I want to design jackets using my personal collection of feathers. I won’t share too much, as it’s a surprise! I also want to get the ‘Bouclé Tweed Jacket’ by Chanel, as it can be styled with anything and everything. I think its simplicity and femininity represent me as a person. JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4 2017

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY

WITH ALI JAFRI AND HAMZA JAFRI

Ali Jafri, founding member of Noori, and Hamza Jafri, guitarist, singer, composer and director at the MAD School, talk about their brotherhood. From playing in indoor tents in West Africa to growing up to being each other’s closest companions, these siblings come clean about it all What is your first memory of each other? Ali: Since we’re five years apart I have some faint memories of Hamza as a baby in his crib in London. A more vivid first memory is of us playing in some sort of colourful, indoor kids tent in West Africa — this was way back in 1980. Soon afterwards, in Southern Africa, I remember we thought it would be swell to sword fight with real box cutters. Hamza still has the scar on his hand, mine is more emotional. Hamza: Playing at our home in Zimbabwe. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Ali: Quite honestly, nothing crazy comes to mind. So, either we’re deathly boring together or our crazy meter is way out there! Hamza: We watched the war movie Platoon, which

was rated 18, in the cinema when we were both under 12 year olds.

those sappy, emotional talks. Hamza: By letting the disharmonious moment pass.

What did you get punished for the most as a child? Ali: We were lucky. We didn’t get punished much by our parents — either that or we didn’t notice getting punished. School was a different story though. In my time during the early 80s, children were usually harshly punished. There was no detention, no inspirational talk with the teacher, just a swift, peeled bamboo cane to the behind (for as little as not doing homework too!) Hamza: For making loud noises, and disturbing the peace.

What is the one secret talent your brother has, that you wish you had too? Ali: It’s no secret that Hamza can play the guitar and compose music like nobody’s business. I wish I could too! Hamza: His writing skills.

If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Ali: Nothing would fit! Well, maybe a tie. For the rest of my life ... wait, why is this even a question? Hamza: His pyjamas. If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Ali: Travel! We have different passports, his gets visa-free access to 175 countries, and mine to only 29, which includes choice destinations like Micronesia and Vanuatu. Hamza: Start an exercise regime. What is the one thing you love about your brother? Ali: Siblings have the unique advantage of sharing a completely unpretentious relationship, and that’s how Hamza and I are. He says it as it is — straight up. What’s not to love about that? Hamza: His sense of humour. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Ali: In probably the same fashion that all guys do: by just moving on. We don’t have any of

Describe your brother in three words: Ali: Pensive, sensitive and committed. Hamza: Intelligent, funny and loving. Which fictional character is your brother most like? Ali: Hamza would make a great character actor. He has this understated charisma and mystique, and he plays his cards carefully, not revealing too much. I don’t watch enough films or read enough fiction books to name a specific character with these traits. Hamza: The Thing in The Thing. How are your personalities similar? Ali: Actually, we couldn’t be more dissimilar — that’s what people say at least. Hamza’s the serious, quiet type. He’s much more composed and mature. Hamza: We both have a thirst for knowledge. I can’t live without my brother because… Ali: I haven’t entertained the thought of life without any of my siblings. As far as I am concerned, all my siblings will remain my siblings till the end of time. Sure, that’s taking them for granted — but a little bit of that is allowed amongst siblings, no? Hamza: Because we are one soul. JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4 2017

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS WITH JEEM BY HAMZA BOKHARI

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diơerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Wazhma Awan Freelance Stylist

People who know me know that I’m a global nomad. I’m very proud of my heritage and you’ll always see a Balochi influence in my style. Even with the Jeem cape, I tried adding some ethnicity to my look. I first paired the cape with a black and gold shalwar, and enhanced it by accessorising with a chunky arm-cuff, an ethnic ear-cuff and a classic anklet. I completed the outfit with gold, tilla khussay. I tied my hair up and for my make-up, I went for dramatic eyes with nude lips. I already have plans of wearing this to my sister’s mehndi! 56

JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4 2017

T

his ful beautiful cape is from Jeem by Hamza Bokhari’s ‘Nahrooz’ collection, which was showcased at Fashion Pakistan Week 2016. The cape is completely handmade, enduring months of craftsmanship. It is made using marori, zardozi and resham techniques in order to create a relatively modern silhouette, which also exudes old world charm.

Madiha Tariq Design Head, Generation

Personally, I like adding contemporary pieces to my ethnic outfits in order to give the silhouette my own unique touch, while keeping it clean and crisp. For this Jeem cape, I went for a fusion look. I first wore orange, flared pants to incorporate some colour and then added a chunky, gold belt for a contemporary touch. I kept my hair straight and for my make-up I went for bold, red lips with a dewy complexion. Since it’s the season of festivities, I would love to wear this outfit to a friend’s dholki or maybe even a fashion event where I want to make a statement.

Fatima Khan Architect

I love celebrating our culture in full bloom! Since I was going for a formal look I played with jewellery and a lot of bling. I wore this beautifully embellished Jeem cape with a rust coloured lehnga. I then paired it with a polki and kundan tikka, necklace and earrings. For my make-up I did a smoky eye, with nude lips and a lot of bronzer. I kept my hair simple and straight. I would totally wear this to a wedding — I love the burst of colours!

THE CORNER WITH ATIKA SHAUKAT

Interior designer and interior architect, Atika Shaukat, welcomes us into her favourite space — her grandiose indoor veranda By Minahil Qasim

O

60

JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4 2017

n a warm winter afternoon we make our way to Atika Shaukat’s house located in the outskirts of Lahore. A teal main door detailed with African Wangi wood and slabs of onyx, opens up to a beautiful indoor veranda, where our amiable host awaits us. The double height indoor veranda is the main focal area of the house. Here the large windowpanes with a picturesque view of the lush garden and terrace allow ample sunlight to brighten up the house. A wooden Indesign table, ornamented with ceramic mother-of-pearl statement pieces from China, sits on the entrances’ marbled floor inlay made of onyx. The textured, cream coloured walls adorned with traditional qandeel lamps and paintings by various artists add to the grand ambiance of the space. We are mesmerised by the impact that the passion fruit and grape vines, pressed against the upper story windowpanes create. A ceiling with arched wood slabs and a classic American hunter fan, add to the timeless appearance of the space. “The man behind this space was Wasif Ali Khan, a senior architect

who was adamant that this scenic indoor yet outdoor veranda has to be made, and spaces such as the study, the stairs, the living room, were to be built around it,” Shaukat explains while handing us a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. “I love natural light and greenery so the concept of an indoor veranda just brought it all together. We kept in mind how hot it gets in the summer, therefore the area is enclosed, however it manages to keep the entire house warm and well-lit,” she elaborates. The main hero of Shaukat’s indoor veranda is the fountain made in onyx and we can’t help inquire about it. “This fountain is my baby, not only did I design it, but I was involved in it till it’s execution. I wanted a fountain that gave a rocky, outdoorsy feel so I ordered these onyx stones from Karachi. I kept them uneven and as natural as possible. The water circulation system is designed to give a bubbly, natural stream effect.” All the pieces in Shaukat’s veranda, from her 20-year-old reupholstered velvet couch with 3D embroidery to her Egyptian head armchairs to her console to her glass coffee table to her Ghilaf-E-Kaaba and Ghilaf-E-RozE-Rasool wall hangings, gels in well with the space, whether its modern or traditional. “I love mixing and matching as I can’t seem to stick to one theme, thus my space is contemporary yet classical with a touch of colonial. One does not get bored like this and it’s more long lasting than sticking to one theme,” our host explains while gazing around her veranda. We leave our host’s house feeling inspired as her indoor veranda not only serves as an extension of a living space, but also provides a transition zone between the house and the garden. Furthermore, it provides ample space for relaxing and celebrating countless moments with family and friends.

FOOD

THE NOTEPAD Saba Sharjeal, CEO of The Mad Chef and host of the TV show Just Baking, which airs on Masala TV, lists the trendiest desserts for the wedding season

Engagement Has he popped the question already? If so, lets celebrate with a cake, and of course there has to be an edible ring box to go with it. This ‘Black and Gold Damask Cake’ is a winner when it comes to our engagement desserts, and the runner up is our Tiffany and Co themed cake.

Bridal shower Now this event can be tricky, especially if my client warns me “she’s a bridezilla — please help”. Lets be honest, I’m on my toes with this event, so I put my super-girly cap on. The desserts can range from make-up, to Prada bags, to lingerie or dresses, to even simple floral cakes. This one was done recently and is a favourite of mine — all handcrafted and edible.

Nikkah Four years ago my friend suggested converting the term ‘I do’ to ‘qabool hai!’ Ever since, it’s been the most popular and trendy product of ours. My clients usually distribute individually packed cookies or cupcakes as bidh or mithai, and some even serve them on beautifully decorated thalis or trays.

Baraat The baraat is probably the most emotional event, as the bride is about to start a new life and her cake should stand out like her. I tend to focus on delicate patterns, bold colours and I always like to add a touch of gold. The main colours I use are ivory and red for this event. It’s nice to keep the desserts for this day simple yet beautiful.

62

JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4 2017

Dholki I love it when a group of excited girls call me to design a dholak themed cake. It’s usually the start of the festivities. For this event we tend to focus on colours like fuchsia, yellow, purple and orange. The main focus of course is the dholak or doli and an intricate mehndi design done with royal icing adds the perfect touch.

Mehndi Mehndi themed desserts are super-fun to make! Think vibrant colours, shimmer, glitter, paisleys and henna. Our hottest sellers are our assorted cupcakes, which reflect the true essence of a traditional mehndi.

Valima For the valima cake, I tend to focus on pastels, edible, fragile laces and sugar flowers. The cake is glistened by a pearl sheen to further enhance the pastel shades like ice blue and mint green, and also uses a touch of silver or gold. Recently we started macaroon towers, which are little bites of heaven. I suggest two towers on either side of the wedding cake — they are such a lovely addition to a wedding dessert table.
