INTERVIEW
Fit, fIerce and Fabulous with Maya Nassar By Maha Rizvi
We chat with the inspirational fitness athlete, entrepreneur, and TV host of MTV’s Get Fit, Maya Nassar. From her journey to becoming the first ever government endorsed bikini bodybuilding competitor in Arab history to sharing some of her tried and tested tips and tricks — this Lebanese superstar comes clean about it all!
JANUARY 8-14 2017
40
How did you get into fitness bikini bodybuilding? Was this a life long passion? Back in the day, I led an unhealthy life and never worked out. I lost 20 kilos and five dress sizes, which is when I realised I had a passion for fitness. I wanted to push myself and set more challenging goals. So I did a lot of research online and in 2013 I participated in my first show. While it is mentally and physically challenging, I feel competing is a great opportunity and good fun whether you win or loose. How do sports empower women? Reaching challenging goals is always empowering. It makes you stronger mentally, and a healthier, independent and more confident person. It also puts you in a happier state of mind, which helps you achieve other goals. Why did you make the decision not to endorse any brands? I wanted to prove that I’m credible. There are many diet pills and machines that make claims to make one slimmer, but I want to educate people about the proper way to train and diet. How did the idea to create an app come along? When I entered my first competition I started writing advice columns and shared pictures and videos of my progress. A lot of people found this interesting, and would ask me for advice — even strangers. Since I had a background in journalism and a passion for fitness, I decided to write about it so that others can learn from me, and thus started an online platform that provides
41
JANUARY 8-14 2017
free health and fitness information. Initially I created a website which used to get about 8,000 visitors a day, which is when I decided to build an app, as it’s more advanced and always accessible.
Reaching challenging goals is always empowering. It makes you stronger mentally, and a healthier, independent and more confident person What is the one thing you hope people take back from your TV show, Get Fit? I want people to know that anyone can get fit, that it’s never too late, and that you can train anywhere. My program only uses basic equipment and the workouts are targeted at people who don’t have access to the gym. The workouts from the show are also available on my website and YouTube. What has been your biggest career challenge? I would say criticism on social media. I’ve been lucky to have supportive friends and family, but people don’t always approve of everything one may do. I tried to stay unaffected by what they had
to say, but it was a challenge. I had to accept that sometimes people think differently. My Arabic was also a challenge! I’m half Dutch and grew up in Nigeria and London before moving to Lebanon, thus I wasn’t fluent. What are three of the most important fitness tips? 1. Lift weights. Women don’t realise how effective it is, and think they’ll look like a man, but weights are the best way to burn fat and tone your body. There are so many benefits and it really is not enough to run, in fact I would say weights are superior to cardio! 2. Don’t drink liquid calories. With sugary beverages, often times you may not even realise how much you’re consuming in calories. 3. Consistency. A lot of people want results in a week or two, but it doesn’t happen like that. Body transformations take a minimum of three months, so don’t be impatient. What is the biggest exercise myth you want to beat? I want people to know that there is no magic bullet or substitute to hard work. Don’t fall for scams — you will never see the results. Just like Pakistani food, Arab food, can be unhealthy. How can people cook and eat these traditional dishes in the healthiest way? Never fry your food, stick to items that are steamed. Stay away from creamy sauces and cheese. Don’t eat processed foods, have more salads and vegetables, and replace white carbs with brown carbs. For meat lovers, replace fatty cuts with lean cuts.

I’m at MTV studios, which is not too far from my house. The show only takes 10 minutes but I stay a little bit longer to help edit the episode.
I go to the gym, for my hour and a half long workout. I then attend any meetings or consultations that I have booked for the day.
AM This is my time to tend to any personal projects I am working on, and then head over to do any photo shoots I am booked for the day.
It’s time for my Arabic classes, which I’m taking to improve my command on the language.
Head back home to have dinner with my husband.
Fast asleep!
TO S S U P What is your favourite exercise?
What do you binge on when it’s cheat day?
Squats.
Pasta — it’s my weakness.
What is an exercise that you find the hardest? Pull-ups. How many hours a day do you workout? An hour and a half. What is the oldest piece of workout gear you own? A pair of Nike pants that I’ve had for 10 years. I still have a lot of old clothes, which I look at when I’m lacking motivation. What does your workout playlist contain? A lot of Chris Brown songs!
Who is your biggest motivation? A body builder called Tom Venuto. He wrote a book called Burn Fat, Feed Muscle, and his words were so inspiring in my journey. I have interacted with him too and he’s a really nice person. An Arab dish you recommend? A Lebanese dish called lafitte, which is made of grape leaves. What is your life motto? Life is 10 per cent what happens to you, and 90 per cent how you react to it.

5am: Fast asleep… 7am: At around 7:30am, I wake up, and the first thing I do is take my daughter Zoay and my dogs out for a walk. This is a great warm up for me before I head to the gym.
8am: It’s gym time! I start my daily routine, which lasts about an hour — after all looking good takes work.
9am: As soon as I am back from the gym, the first thing I do is hit the shower. My shampoo and conditioner of choice is from the new Label.m hair range for men. It gets you ready for the day — I absolutely love it. 10am: After my shower, I’m dressed and ready for breakfast. My breakfast is truly one for champions, it consists of a protein shake, Special K cereal and boiled eggs.
10:30am: Now it is time for my meetings with the marketing department and/or administrative team of Toni & Guy. After all, life does need some planning.
11am: I head to the academy around 11am, to teach the students there. 1:30pm: I take a lunch break now. My lunch usually consists of a salad, grilled chicken or roast beef and some fruit juice. 2pm: After lunch, it’s back to the grind — visiting the salon and catering to any of my appointments for the day. This is what I do for majority of the day.
6pm: I reach the SCAFA Cooking School, as I am training to be a chef and it is now time for class. These days I am trying to perfect my hollandaise sauce.
8pm: I’m back home just in time to get the dinner menu started. 9pm: After dinner it’s time for Zoay to get into bed, and as a ritual, I always tuck her in. 10pm: After my daughter is asleep, it’s time for me to spend some time with my wife. Usually we just find something to watch on Netflix.
11:30pm: Zzz…I follow this routine till Saturday, and then it’s party time! 45

ART
THE VAULT WITH SAMEERA RAJA The artistic and creative Sameera Raja of Canvas Gallery, shares her love for contemporary art and showcases some of her favourite pieces
How/when did you get interested in art? Since I made the decision to join the National College of Arts at the age of 18. I guess I appreciated beauty and what can be more beautiful or fulfilling than art? What are your favourite pieces from your gallery? There are too many favourites, which vary according to my mood and frame of mind. Currently, I am enjoying works by Ghulam Mustafa (GM), Aamir Habib, Ayaz Jokhio, Muzzumil Raheel, Adeel uz Zafar, Muhammad Ali and Irfan Hasan. Where did you get them? My love started a long time ago. I am passionate about beauty captured in the form of art. My favourite pieces come from artists all over the world, or sometimes from our own show. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces: I’m not a person for stories, I am a visual person. If I see a work of art I love and I can afford to acquire it, I don’t think about it twice. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I buy through my eyes and not my ears. Neither do I buy a work of art for the name of the artist or its investment value, hence there are no parameters. At the end of the day, it is all about loving the work itself.

How would you describe your body type? I would say my body type is pear-shaped. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Yes, it certainly has changed back and forth constantly over the years. How has your style changed over the years? I don’t think my style has changed too much. It was, and still is adventurous. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? I would probably consider my thighs and arms to be my biggest problem area. How do you dress your body according to your body type? With my physique and love for trends, I prefer wearing wide-leg, high waisted, bootleg trousers with crop-tops. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think jumpsuits and saris suit me best. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? Skinny jeans!

FEATURE
IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY WITH AMINA SIBTAIN AND ZARA SIBTAIN Sisters Amina Sibtain, partner at Fitfibre, and Zara Sibtain, Coordinator of Parent and Family Programs at William & Mary College, talk to us about the love they share, as well as their crazy childhood memories
What is your first memory of each other? Amina: She is the youngest so it was easy to coerce her into doing things. I remember making her wear a lehnga, draping dupattas all over, and doing mehndi dances while a doll was her make-belief groom. Zara: Our parents enrolled us in karate lessons when we were little, so that we would stay out of trouble. The two of us would happily go to the classes but instead of participating, we would stand on the side and drink water. It’s safe to say we both never advanced from white belt! What is the craziest thing you have done together? Amina: Once we decided to jump on Zara’s bed and it broke, which led to our mother punishing her by making her sleep on a mattress on the floor for a month — I obviously escaped the situation effortlessly and without punishment. Zara: Our eldest sister was obsessed with The Backstreet Boys (BSB) when we were younger. All three of us shared a room, and she had put up posters of BSB all over the room. Amina and I both hated the band and one day we decided to vandalise her posters and draw all over them, needless to say, it did not go down well. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Amina: I was always super-melodramatic about my schoolwork and tests, and frankly my parents were over that very early on in my life. Also, I’ve always been a picky eater with a small appetite, which gets me into trouble till today. Zara: I always got in trouble because I was not good at anything school related, and miss-goody-two-shoes over here always had her work done and got straight A’s without even trying. JANUARY 8-14 2017
54
If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Amina: This is not really a clothing item, but I want her snuggie! Zara: Without a doubt her shoes. She is a shoe fanatic and I wish my shoe closet looked like hers. If I had to choose one pair I would pick her gold and silver strappy Gucci heels. They are supercute and versatile. If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Amina: Use her savings and go on a shopping spree. Zara: She owns these hideous pink sheep pyjamas, which she’s had for over a decade now. It’s about time they go! After I throw those out, I would take her poems and get them published. What is the one thing you love about your sister? Amina: She knows who she is and stands up for what she believes in — it can sometimes be extremely frustrating as well. Zara: Her sense of humour. She thinks she’s the funniest person she has ever met, and I hate to boost her ego but she is really funny. Also her loyalty — she is always there when I need her, and is the most loyal and sincere person I know. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Amina: We never fight, it’s mostly Zara lecturing me while I listen obediently and end up doing the exact opposite. Zara: We don’t really fight. Usually she just sits and stares at me till I laugh!
55
JANUARY 8-14 2017
What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too? Amina: Being financially responsible — I need to acquire this talent of hers as soon as possible! Zara: I’m not sure if this is a secret, but her ability to express through poetry. Describe your sister in three words: Amina: Responsible, loving and warm. Zara: Hilarious, loyal and dedicated. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Amina: Rafiki from The Lion King; he’s full of wisdom and Zara loved imitating monkeys as a child. Zara: I don’t know why but she reminds me of Daffy Duck. How are your personalities similar? Amina: Neither of us have a short temper, which comes in handy with our family because our parents and eldest sister are very short tempered. Zara: We let loose, have fun and don’t take ourselves too seriously, yet somehow she always manages to take it one step too far. I can’t live without my sister because… Amina: Someone has to give me the side eye when I’m discussing my insane and impractical life plans. Also, she’s my best friend and mother rolled into one very tiny package. Zara: She’s my best friend, and of course because we would have no one to make fun of at family gatherings.

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS WITH NAUMAN ARFEEN
While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diơerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!
Nauman Arfeen showcased his new collection ‘Pukaar’ at Fashion Pakistan Week (FPW), Winter Festive 2016. Inspired by the Mughals, ‘Pukaar’ is a collection that pleads the audience to break away from the hardships of life, and instead give love a chance, spreading peace and harmony along the way. To elicit such feelings, Arfeen used children as models for his finale at FPW 2016, leaving the audience in nothing but smiles. We do the same for this week’s One Piece, Three Ways. Arfeen’s piece is a soft green sherwani that varies in length for all three looks. Ahmed’s ensemble is a knee length top with straight black pants. For Zain’s look, Arfeen keeps the sherwani longer with a gold pajama and a matching turban. Mikael’s look uses a gold patyala shalwar, which gives the silhouette a traditional and ethnic vibe. How cute do these little models look? JANUARY 8-14 2017

THE CORNER
WITH LAYLA CHATOOR
Layla Chatoor, the creative luxury designer walks us through her favourite corner, her living room where she spends most of her time and feels most content By Sanya Pervez Hussain
O
n a sunny winter afternoon, we visit Layla Chatoor’s beautiful home in Karachi. Chatoor greets us with a warm cup of tea and cookies before we begin our tour through her lovely space. As we step into the living room, we take note of the Balinese-style aesthetic. Sunlight radiates through the floorto-ceiling windows, which overlooks a luscious garden creating warmth and adding personality to the room. “The green garden connects me to nature, which in turn grounds me and gives me inspiration for new creative endeavours,” explains Chatoor while glancing at her garden, which she and her husband take great pride in. “I wanted the living area to be a reflection of my personality — understated, minimal and modern,” says Chatoor. We come across a dark brown leather sofa and notice numerous family photos around the room. The leather sofa adds charm and once we seat ourselves on it, it doesn’t surprise us why Chatoor chose to place

it in a space where she spends most of her time — the comfort. We also spot a striking green and pink Persian carpet from Afghan Carpet, which Chatoor claims is one her favourite pieces. For her, it brings with it a sense of warmth, dimension and personality. A beautiful painting by Jamil Naqsh catches our eye. Upon inquiring, Chatoor explains her love for collecting artwork and paintings from around the world. “I love paintings, books and carpets, and we have collected several over the years. They tell stories of the journey and experiences I have had.” The coffee table books with candles, and shells on trays, give a New York City loft feel. Our host then opens the door to her fountain court, which features a massive structure in the centre, as well as charming wooden swings. We look around to observe the details in her living space. From photographs to artwork to blue and white Renaissance chairs and ceramic pieces, this corner reflects on Chatoor’s soft and experimental personality. Though she spends most of her time in here, whether it’s with her family or her ‘me’ time, Chatoor is able to maintain her corner spectacularly: “My house is very cosy and manageable. Since I wasn’t brought up here, I am very practical in my approach as to how the house should be managed and maintained. I get things done quite easily.” Chatoor also hangs out with her friends or watches television in here. “I frequently entertain guests here too, but at the same time it is my comfort room. I’ve had so many people over for brunch, dinner, coffee or cosy gatherings, and most guests steer away from formal areas and gravitate into this space. It’s warm and welcoming.” As we say our goodbyes, we thank Chatoor for her time and hospitality. On our walk out, she emphasises that her corner is to entertain guests but at the same time a creative place that inspires her to create each day. “This is one of the most special spaces in my house. Where God’s creations inspire me and give me the drive to do even more everyday,” she smiles.

THE NOTEPAD Salina Taqi, co-founder of YogaX, Pakistan’s first hot yoga studio, and the brains behind Salina Cosmetics, shares her seven favourite yoga poses Downward facing dog This pose is on the top of my favourite list — my day simply can’t start without downward facing dog! Its benefits are supreme — it energises the body, gets your blood flowing to the brain, improves your memory and reduces depression.
Childs pose This is my mid afternoon go-to pose. It stretches the hips and lengthens the back, which reduces fatigue and stress. It instantly relaxes me and improves my focus.
Chaturanga or lowered plank This is the ultimate strengthening and toning pose! It is challenging yet very powerful. This pose tones the entire body, especially the abdominal muscles. Always remember, a strong core leads to a strong body and a strong immunity.
Twisted crescent This is a superb pose as it aids detoxification by massaging the internal organs. The crescent strengthens and energises the body, while the twist aids in the detoxification process and improves digestion. I love this pose because it fires up the metabolic rate.
Astavakrasana or eight-angle pose I love this arm balance! It makes me feel strong, stable and balanced. I can only achieve this pose when I feel centred and in the moment.
Updog This pose lengthens the back, firms and tones the entire body and improves your posture. It stretches the lungs, chest, shoulders and abdomen, and can almost instantly improve the quality of your breath. It is even known for curing asthma within three to six months.
Shavasana This pose relaxes one’s entire being. It releases every morsel of stress and fatigue away. It also calms the mind and body, and improves your concentration and blood circulation.
