LIFE STYLE
With Fatima
Khan
Aura Crafts was founded by Fatima Khan’s parents, which began as a home-based hobby while she was still in university. Fatima along with her mother Saweela Khan now manages Aura Crafts that specialises in 100% natural handcrafted and cruelty free skincare products. We talk one on one with Fatima as she shares some details of her professional journey with us What inspired the idea of Aura Crafts? A passion for holistic health, my parents and I founded Aura as a home-based hobby of making handcrafted, natural soaps. How did it transition from hand crafted soaps to a whole plethora of organic products? The response of the home-made soaps was so fantastic that our family and friends convinced us to market them on social media. A year into it we were selling at several retail stores in Lahore and now, seven years later, we’re selling nationwide! In your opinion, how important is it to read the ingredients while buying skincare products? Incredibly important; what’s the point of moving towards natural, safe skincare if you’re not interested in knowing what the product contains? Your skin is like a sponge, so one should certainly feed it something nutritious! What does a typical work day involve? Yoga, a big breakfast, office time, family time, dog time, TV time and finally a little bit of meditation, and good old sleep time. What is the most gratifying part of your job? Making everything in-house, giving our employees a sense JANUARY 27-FEBRUARY 2 2019

to be as organised as him. I’m terribly failing, but it helps me meet my work deadlines and also helps me make room for more creativity - which means some new fun Aura products are on the horizon!
of productivity and pride about locally handcrafted products, and receiving positive reviews from customers who suffer from serious skin conditions. As Aura Crafts celebrate all skin colours, how do you feel about the country’s cosmetic industry facilitating a limited shade range? It really infuriates me. I’m a person with tan skin so it bothers me even more. We have a long way to go as a country and subcontinent, to tackle these unfair (pun intended) beauty standards. I don’t understand how we, as a nation, really look up to public figures like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra who fall in the tan/dark skin range, but we don’t seem to like those tones on ourselves, friends or our children. Doesn’t matter how fair or dark you are, I truly believe feeling beautiful from within is what shines brightest, and people should stop feeling privileged about their physical attributes. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in the field? Be honest, work hard and stay focused! Which products on your shelf do you gravitate towards most? It depends on the season. These days it’s Rosewood Essential Oil, Organic Rose Water, Head Over Heels Foot Scrub and Activated Charcoal Bar!

What is the most challenging part about your job? Finding local vendors with certified ingredients and maintaining an affordable price range with the increasingly expensive dollar to rupee rate! Most of our ingredients are imported, which means we spend everything on duties and customs. It’s absolutely nerve wrecking. How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it? I’m a bit all over the place. I guess you have to be when you own a business. I divide my week into two halves. I spend Monday, Wednesday and Friday with my marketing and retail team, where we discuss everything from sales, ra promotions to designing Aura artwork and I spend Tuesdayy and Thursday (sometimes Saturday) at the plant with my production team where I overlook the production plan, test out new recipes and decide future products. What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? I am fascinated by how incredibly organised my dad was so I’m learning
Where are you currently stocking? Lahore: All the Al Fatahs, Haryali Store, My Vitamin Store, The Organic Shop, Esa Jee DHA. Islamabad: Shams, The Edit Store, Al Fatah, Shaheen Chemist. Rawalpindi: Shaheen Chemist. Faisalabad: Al Fatah. Karachi: Necos, Springs Store, Agha’s Store, Pharmacie Plus. What are the top three Aura Crafts skincare products to pick up this winter? Revive face oil for dry and/or ageing skin. Goat milk bar for dry and sensitive skin. Lift me up hydrating + firming face scrub + mask. What is in store for Aura Crafts in the future? We’re going international and some exciting new product ranges are coming soon!
FOOD
There’s nothing Karachi loves more than a new eatery opening up in its already bustling food scene. But from the moment you walk into Bambou, you know it’s going to be a truly unique experience. Karachi is experimental and brave for trying different kinds of food and always welcomes all types of delicacies with ultimate fervour and open arms; but somehow Chinese cuisine always seems to be a major hit! Located on E-street, Bam-Bou; a perfectly lit restaurant with a modern Chinese interior, has a vast variety of Chinese cuisine. It offers various mouthwatering dishes accompanied by light starters, refreshing salads and soups as well as sea food, a myriad of mocktails and decadent desserts for all of us to end our meal on a high note. The menu is crafted with love and attention for real Chinese food lovers! From its serene ambiance to lip-smacking food, the restaurant definitely stands out as one of the best Chinese eateries! Crispy Beijing Beef Crispy Beef is one of the most popular dishes at any Chinese eatery so we decided to try theirs as per the server’s recommendation. The dish definitely was a hit and we couldn’t stop ourselves from eating it. Bam-Bou’s Beijing beef featured battered and perfectly deep-fried marinated beef, stir-fried in a wok with red bell peppers, sliced onions, and a sweet and spicy sauce. The beef was crispy from the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. The sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and sour sauce with a hint of spicy. Pair it with garlic rice and you’ve found yourself your new go to comfort meal. We can have this combination at any time of any day!
Asian Spicy Lobster Lobster is any seafood lover’s dream and with Bam-Bou’s Asian Spicy Lobster any die-hard foodie would get hooked to it. Just as we were presented with this dish, we couldn’t wait to dig in. The presentation was appealing and the lobster tasted just as good as it looked, maybe even better. As we devoured the lobster we couldn’t help but rave about how soft it was. The firm consistency between flaky and chewy and a light, sweet flavour packed with moisture definitely made the fresh lobster a mouth-watering dish and one of our favourites.

Chicken Burmese Khaosuey If you’re a true Khaosuey lover, then this should be your new go-to place! We were very eager to try their famous ‘Chicken Burmese Khaosuey’ and I must admit it’s the best Khoasuey I have ever eaten! I loved everything about this dish, from the presentation to the way you get a taste of every condiment. The flavours overlap each other perfectly and give you the real Burmese Khaosuey experience!
Bam-Bou Hot and Sour Soup For starters we tried out one of restaurant’s speciality, The Bam-Bou Hot and Sour Soup.’ One sip and we knew it was not our usual Hot and Sour. It was rich and thick, but not gloppy, the broth was packed with flavour even before the vinegar and pepper were added. The vegetables were crunchy and bright; the slivers of tofu and chicken were tender and comforting. Above all, the soup was light and fresh.
Chicken Manchurian Chicken Manchurian is one of the first dishes that come to our mind when we talk about Chinese cuisine and so we decided to try it. The Chicken Manchurian was served sizzling hot, literally. The diced fried chicken with a thick sauce of ginger and garlic together with soy sauce, corn starch, and ketchup was delicious but couldn’t beat our love for crispy beef and lobster.
Toffee Cream Cake By the end of trying out a variety of dishes we decided to give their dessert a try and we definitely did not regret it; their Toffee Cream Cake was sinfully delicious. The light, fluffy, and perfectly balanced sweet cake is definitely a crowd pleaser!

How did you get into modelling? I’ve always been obsessed with dressing up and taking pictures. I started channeling my love for fashion through Instagram and it pretty much became my portfolio in itself! That’s where I was discovered. If you were not a model, what would you be? I am an architect by qualification. I was doing art direction prior to modelling. So if I was not a model, I’d obviously be practicing architecture or interior design. But on the side I’d also be a fashion designer and blogger for sure. I just can’t lose touch with fashion; I wish I could do it all at the same time! If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive who would it be? Matt LeBlanc in his character from Friends; Joey Tribbiani. Describe yourself in three words? Honest, indecisive and moody. Any hidden talents? I can make “gol roti ”. I consider that a talent since I can’t cook at all! Biggest pet peeve? Loud chewing/dirty eating. What would be your trademark accessory? An anklet. What are the three fashion trends you love at the moment? I don’t exactly follow trends. I just don’t appreciate the obsession with trends especially in our country. Everyone looks the same; it just kills your personal style! But let’s just say this winter I’m looking forward to oversized layering, sleek hairdos and simply a fusion of sass and class intermixed! Top three favourite models? Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid and Winnie Harlow. Three things you can never leave your house without? Phone, wallet and earphones. If you had to be trapped in a TV show for a month, which one would you choose? Friends!

First celebrity crush? To be honest, I’ve never really had celebrity crushes plus I’ve always noticed women more than men, just for the sake of fashion inspiration, mind you! So I believe I could say I’ve only been obsessed with one celebrity in my life, and that’s Deepika Padukone! I adore that woman and her grace! If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Crisps; I’m not a foodie. So I can literally survive on snacks! But I’m not a chocolate person; I’m just crazy about crisps in all sorts of flavours! Would you rather be able to see 10 minutes into your own future or 10 minutes into the future of anyone but yourself? Definitely into my own future. Let’s not be nosey! One super power you wish to possess? Okay I just said let’s not be nosey but come on I’d love to be able to read minds! Would you rather find your true love or a suitcase with five million dollars inside? I’ll definitely find my true love and together we could make those five million dollars! What was the last lie you told? “I’m on my way home” I say this to my mom all the time and then I get back home hours later! When was the last time you were really scared and why? A few months back I slipped and fell head first on the marble floor. I was all alone. I genuinely felt I died right there and then. It really messed with my head for a few days, I would constantly feel there was some internal after effects and that I would die. That was a harsh reality check. It’s really just a matter of moments, you never know one minute it can be all good and you can be dead the very next minute. One bad habit you want to quit but are unable to? Not drinking water at all. What’s the best and worst thing about your job? The worst I’d say is lack of sleep. But the best part is that we could sleep till the very last minute of makeup call since we don’t have to get up and dress up for work, we literally walk in as zombies and come out as queens!
