TOSS UP

In a round of Toss Up with Deepak Perwani, the talented designer gives us the wittiest answers. From the strangest question he’s ever been asked, to sharing who makes it on his best-dressed list, the fashion mogul shares it all

What has been your favourite collection of your own till date? The ‘Flights of Fantasy’ collection that we showcased in Milan.

What’s your favourite festival? Holi – and my birthday, which is on Christmas!

What is your favourite ad campaign? Years ago there was this YSL campaign where the man had a snake wrapped around him. I love that, and Keira Knightly in the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle perfume ad.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? I’ve received many gifts, but my favourite would be the one I got this one time on Valentine’s Day. I got a dozen of every kind of flower in the city from an anonymous admirer — though I received no SMS, call, or letter after that.

One habit you wish you could break? Smoking.

What would the title of your autobiography be? The Bad Boy of Pakistani Fashion.

48

JULY 10-16 2016

What songs are on your playlist right now? Gabriel by Lamb.

If you could swap places with anyone for a day, who would it be and what would you do? I’d swap places with the Prime Minister and resign. Then I would get a better-looking President for the country.

Who do you think is the best-dressed in Pakistan today? Atiya Khan and Shehrbano Taseer. Who did you text last and what does it say? I texted my lawyers to let them know I’m on my way to them.

What was the best vacation you ever took and why is it your favourite? A couple of years ago, a bunch of friends and I decided to go to Spain after watching Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara. We all flew from wherever we were in the world and went around different cities in Spain and did lots of adventurous things, just like in the movie.

Who would you love to design for, and what would you make them? I would love to design for Natalie Portman, and I would make her a beautiful evening ball gown.

Strangest question you’ve ever been asked? What is on the top of your wish-list? My upcoming holiday in New York!

Every time I go out with my mother, I’m asked if she is my sister.

What is your favourite movie of all-time? I’ve watched What’s Up, Doc, Pretty Woman, and Clueless so many times. What is your first thought when you wake up in the morning? I better run, I’m getting late for work. What would you change about the fashion industry in Pakistan? Fashion journalism, and people with bloated egos who give themselves too much self-importance. Favourite home cooked food? Daal chawal and butter chicken, for sure. What is the best thing about living in Karachi? It’s a harsh city, but this is home.

Your favourite moment of 2016? It is yet to come! JULY 10-16 2016

THE VAULT The lovely owner of Biye Jewellery, Nazia Qadir unlocks her safe for us and shares her ethnic heirloom pieces and gives us a quick history ay lesson along the way

How and when did you get interested in jewellery? Growing up, my sisters and I were expected to adorn these gold baali earrings. While my sisters were very conscientious about it, I would find some excuse or the other to take them off and leave them lying around the house in the hope that I would lose them. I was definitely a tomboy in my growing up years, and jewellery was the least of my interests. However, receiving my first solitaire studs as a graduation present from my mother was when I truly noticed and perhaps realised what fine jewellery was about. Picking out my wedding pieces was also a special time to revisit our family traditions and ties with jewellery and the unique story that each piece carries with it over time. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? I’m a pushover for traditional pieces. My absolute favourites are the family heirloom pieces that have been passed down to me from my mother. My all-time favourite that does not get much airtime is the rani haar. It’s a unique combination of ruby, diamonds and pearls set in gold. Our family jeweller, Benod Behari Dutt in Kolkata, made a tika for my wedding with a lot of affection, that I absolutely fell in love with. Another piece that I can never get over is my ruby and diamond ring set in gold. My kamar

bandh (waist band/sari belt) is another favourite. Not very widely worn, yet the kamar bandh is a classic piece that every jewellery enthusiast must own. It was a mainstay in the Mughal era and a distinct part of Indian classical dance forms. As a trend, it has made a huge comeback even in contemporary dressing. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? This emerald ring given to me by my parents holds a special place in my heart. The Tiffany ‘Eternity Band’ necklace gifted to me by my husband is also very dear to me. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? According to my janam kundli (birth chart as per Vedic astrology) and family astrologer, my birthstone is emerald. My father, being an avid collector of gems and stones, acquired an emerald for me soon after my birth, which of course was given to me much later in the form of a ring. Ever since, I’ve been wearing it on my little finger, it’s definitely very special to me. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I have my eye on the Cartier ‘Love’ bangles.

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY

Gifted actress Hina Bayat and her sister Sadaf Kamal share their sisterhood. From playing pranks on each other, to chasing goons on the streets of Karachi, these sisters have been through it all – certainly two peas in a perfect pod! What’s your first memory of each other? Hina: We shared a room with three identical beds covered by a huge bed cover. Once Sadaf wrapped me up and left me swaddled in it after we had a fight. It took me forever to get myself out of it! Sadaf: We always did things together. I would mess up and she would fix it. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Hina: Oh, way too many! One of the craziest had to be when Sadaf was driving a friend and I to have chaat on Boat Basin. Two guys started following us on a motorbike and in trying to escape them, Sadaf almost knocked them over. The chase that followed was something out a Hollywood movie — and yes, we succeeded in losing them! Sadaf: You don’t want to know! What did you get punished for the most as a child? Hina: I rarely got punished, but when I did, it was for my temper and insolence. I was banished to the bathroom till I got my manners back. Sadaf: I used to end up breaking many things around the house like glasses and jugs, so naturally I was punished for that. Also for just being naughty and bullying Hina. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the other’s closet, what would it be? Hina: Sadaf’s favourite blue jeans, just to torture her! Sadaf: Anything embodying her style and elegance. If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would you do? Hina: I would tidy up her closet! Sadaf: First I would lose 20 kilos. Then, when I see her on TV screens, I would tell her: “you look 10 kilos heavier.”

60

JULY 10-16 2016

What is the one thing you love about your sister? Hina: I love and admire Sadaf’s sheer generosity and warmth. She has a heart of gold and a very welcoming aura — a rare quality in people today. Sadaf: That I can totally depend on her. When I am in a crisis or feel as if things are falling apart, she is always a call away. It is if she has a magic wand, because she always manages to take care of everything for me. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Hina: We fight, vent our anger, then once we have calmed down, we apologise to each other and literally hug and make up. Sadaf: Since our childhood, we have argued and fought the most. At that time we used ice cream to make up and now a hug followed by a nice cup of tea and samosas does the trick. What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you did too? Hina: Sadaf has a remarkable talent for making friends who will go out on a limb for her. She inspires a fierce loyalty in her friends, perhaps because she gives so much of herself to her friendships that it is reciprocated in the same manner. Sadaf: She is extremely articulate and so methodical in all that she does. She has the ability to see beyond what most can. Describe your sister in three words: Hina: Glamorous, pure and gullible. Sadaf: Limited edition. They don’t make them like this anymore. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Hina: If Peter Pan had a female version, that would be Sadaf. She lives in a happy world. Sadaf: Tinker Bell.

How are your personalities similar? Hina: We are very different as individuals but we share a common bond due to the values instilled in us. We will never compromise on our honesty or integrity and when it comes to our family and country, we will claw out the eye that casts an evil look our way. We are fiercely emotional when it concerns our own! Sadaf: We both share a common love for reading, travelling, shopping and enjoying life. Also, we are not fussy people.

I can’t live without my sister because… Hina: My sisters are my world! There is no other way I can express it. I am so grateful to my parents for inculcating such feelings in us and forging such a strong bond between us. Sadaf: As we live our lives, we all forget to say many things to the people that matter and touch our lives the most. I could never fathom the idea of my day, let alone my life, without Hina. She has always been my inner strength and inspiration. Hins, I love you, sister! JULY 10-16 2016

TWO

PIECES SIX WAYS

with Nina Neri

T

he ‘Metalic Favola Bag’ is from ‘The Great Gatsby’ collection. “I wanted to create something using chains that was easy to manipulate and creatively appealing. My Italian designer created this with Milan in mind, along with a sense of geometry,” states the designer.

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have six fashionistas showing us how to put together items from Nina Neri’s handbag collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Fatima Habib

Event planner

I consider myself a minimalist. I almost always gravitate towards classic pieces like tailored vests and pants, white button-down shirts and light denim.

With the silver-grey bag I opted for a monochromatic look. I paired a sleeveless grey turtleneck with ripped jeans and metallic oxfords, to dress the bag down. I went for darker eyes for this look, keeping my lip colour subtle. I would wear this outfit to dinner with friends.

With the pink bag I wore all-white, which is personally one of my favourite looks. I paired culottes with a pleated top and long vest, complemented with nude heels. I held the bag as a clutch with the chain hanging in front. For my make-up, I went for light eyes and nude lips with a voluminous blow-dry. This outfit is ideal for a formal brunch or any summer party.

62

JULY 10-16 2016

T

he Pink bag or the ‘Paris Bag’ is inspired from the novel The Great Gatsby. It is made of python leather and the chain is imported from Italy. “I wanted to design a bag using pearls. It is ideal to pair with eveningwear or for a wedding. Dolce & Gabbana is also using these pearls this season!” the designer shares.

Daneese Ali Socialite

Fashion, for me, is what you’re comfortable in, and my personal style is very casual. I love ripped jeans, collared shirts, and long shirts with tights.

I pulled out my long flared denim jeans and a white top to impart a casual look for the pearl pink bag. I accessorised this look with ear cuffs and left my hair open. I would wear this ensemble to a lunch.

With the grey bag, I wore my black culottes and a silver silk top. I wrapped the chains of the bag around my arm to give it a formal look. For my hair, I went with tight curls and accessorised with my Rolex ‘Daytona’ watch, Cartier bracelets and black stilettos. I would wear this look to a formal dinner.

Aleeha Danyal

Dentist

My personal style is an amalgamation. I could be wearing a classic ensemble one day and be in ripped jeans with a bomber jacket and sneakers the next. With the metallic bag I wore a full-sleeved powder pink top with black skinnies and paired the look with snakeskin heels. I decided to hold the bag as a clutch. For my hair, I opted for classic loose curls and for make-up, I went with dramatic eyes. The look could work for a dinner party.

For the second look, I wore white separates and painted my nails red for a pop of colour. I added my jewelled purple pumps with the pink pearl bag, and let the bag hang between both my hands. I would sport this look for fashion week.

JULY 10-16 2016

63

Rubab Ali Model

I would describe my personal style as trendy and edgy. Challenge me to try something new and I will do it wholeheartedly! I’m constantly looking for unusual ways to update my wardrobe.

With the metallic bag, I wore a midi dress with a Swarovski belt and rose pink pumps. I played it safe by staying in the black and grey family, so a pop of pink was necessary. I carried the bag half off my arm to add a sense of elegance to the look. I would wear this to a party.

The pink bag with the pearl chain had to be the hero. I went for a knee-length lace dress and black shoes, which in turn highlighted the pink bag. I wrapped the delicate pearl chain around my wrist and held it as a clutch. For my hair, I went for curls and for my make-up, dramatic eyes with red lipstick. I would wear this look to a party as well.

Risham Saqib Fashion designer

I paired the grey bag with a black skirt-pant and a frilly, off-white top, adding my black Hermès pumps. I carried the bag half way on my arm because that’s usually how I carry bags. I wore pearls from Chanel with my Chopard watch and a diamond tennis bracelet. For my hair I did a bouncy blow-dry, and for make-up I used a La Prairie foundation with ‘Please Me’ lipstick by MAC, with a Dior blush. I would wear this to a friend’s get-together or a day out on holiday.

64

JULY 10-16 2016

A person should know their own style well and avoid going overboard. I would say that my personal style is classy and trendy.

I styled the pink bag with a pleated Zara dress. The colour of the bag was light, so I wore a silver off-white dress to allow the focus to stay on the bag. I wore my ‘Doracora’ Louboutin ballerinas, twisted the beautiful pearl chains on my wrist and carried the bag as a clutch. I wanted the pearl chain to show as much as possible, since it adds to the beauty of the bag. I wore pearl earrings from Dior, a Chopard watch and a diamond tennis bracelet. I would wear this to a birthday party or a formal dinner.

Anush Ammar

CEO, Fabbitt

My personal style ranges from glamorous to experimental and even occasionally, hippy-chic. It depends on what I’m feeling and how I want to channel that vibe.

With the grey bag, I opted for a Mahgul outfit and a man bun to give a more fierce and powerful look. I kept wearing my everyday jewellery and added a Cartier bracelet. For make-up I went for bright pink lips and dramatic eyes and then contoured the rest of my face. I would wear this to a red carpet event.

With the pale-pink bag, I chose a loose shalwar with a tie-up shirt and white shoes. I used braids to give a softer look, perfect for the day or evening. I wore my engagement ring, a watch and to add some bling, my Cartier bracelet. I believe in accessorising the hands — after one’s eyes, they do most of the talking. I would wear this to a lunch.

THE

NINA NERI STORY

Sana Hasan Tata, the woman behind the international handbag brand Nina Neri taking Pakistan by storm, speaks to us about her sensational journey. From facing language barriers during her time at Academia Riacci in Italy, to exploring innovative machinery for her new venture, the young entrepreneur shares it all JULY 10-16 2016

65

With her father’s leather manufacturing and export business already in place, starting a leather goods brand came naturally to Tata. “It just made sense for me to start something involving leather. Though it wasn’t till after I went for my first course that I realised that designing handbags is my calling,” she says. Her first course in handbags was in Karachi, after which she went to Academia Riacci for a Handbag Designing and Manufacturing course. The biggest challenge she faced during her time in Italy was the language barrier, as none of her teachers knew how to speak English and she wasn’t well-versed in Italian.

Other issues she faced included using a sewing machine for the first time, though the language barrier was by far her biggest challenge. “I wish I could say I speak fluent Italian today, but sadly I don’t. However, I managed to pass my course and am running Nina Neri now, so overall my time in Italy was a success,” she smilingly says. After her course was complete she went on to work at Lapipe, one of the finest factories in Italy. Lapipe manufactures goods for mega design house conglomerates such as Gucci and Berluti. This experience was perhaps the most constructive for Tata. “I feel being thrown into such a big production house helped me learn more than I ever would have, had I come back home right after my course,” she says. The next step in her journey was a trade show where she found the accessories used on her handbags. She tells us that a trade show is usually held for large brands to make connections for accessories and bag hardware. She proudly says all accessories used on Nina Neri designs are imported from Italy and are also being used by premier designers such as Dolce & Gabbana. Finally, once all the research was done and Tata

“Though it wasn’t till after I went for my first course that I realised that designing handbags is my calling completed her education, she came back ready to step into the work force. “I told myself slow and steady wins the race, so I paced myself and didn’t rush a single step to make sure that even if the process is slow, I create superior bags instead of mediocre bags faster,” she shares. Tata says the next challenge she faced was the machinery. A lot of new machinery was needed for her venture and she went through a rigorous process to find only the best. After enduring an extensive process in efforts to create her brand, the successful entrepreneur happily states: “Today, I have designers and technicians from Italy who have helped me create the Nina Neri brand. Language is no longer a problem either, as I have translators to help me communicate with them!”

WHAT TO EAT: Baccarat The Italian restaurant Baccarat is a luxurious dining experience not to be missed. The opulent interiors, high-rise ceilings and larger-than-life glass chandeliers are straight out of the sets of The Great Gatsby. The Andalusian Gazpacho is highly recommended.

THINGS TO DO: Stroll on the Golden Circle The cafés in Golden Circle have a delightful selection of teas and juices, and the restaurants scattered on the cliffs, overlooking the sea, are simply divine. Stop by any of these food haven while exploring the streets of Monte-Carlo, and you will not be disappointed.

THE CORNER The talented women behind Jade Interiors, Aalia Monnoo and Mahvish Ellahi, share a special project with us — a space that went from being a dull bedroom to a corner mirroring a hip New York City loft By Natasha Monnoo

W

e visit the site of Jade Interiors’ latest project, an incredible space that was transformed from a dingy old bedroom to a contemporary haven resembling a loft in New York City. The lovely ladies from Jade, Aalia Monnoo and Mahvish Ellahi, share how they worked their magic on this space in a short span of 15 days. Geometric wall panelling and contemporary materials such as brass, metal, and concrete are juxtaposed in a monochromatic composition that is both tranquil and uplifting. It is apparent from the moment we step in that Monnoo and Ellahi have a remarkable eye for contemporary styling. They share with us how this room was renovated from termite-infested parquet and moth-eaten furniture into an area where fresh, modern pieces are placed on a beautiful herringbone design floor. Evidently the space has transformed beautifully, and we can see why it happens

“This is the kind of room where I’d like to sit and read a book. The palette is very muted here and that lends a sense of calm — Mahvish Ellahi

to be one of their favourite corners! When asked about their most loved detail in the room, Monnoo answers: “The geometric panels on the walls were something new and different that we wanted to try. People tend to ask for the same designs over and over again, but we’re always looking to create a unique space that does not exist anywhere else.” The colour palette for this room comprises cooling greys and whites, with hints of gold, black and a pop of emerald green. The furniture adheres to geometric patterns or embellishments; even the customised wall shelves mirror the geometric panel design on the opposite wall. The key pieces in this room include the dragon chair by Strata and the beehive console by Home Couture. We look over to find modern artwork and a handmade concrete stool, which we completely fall in love with. Upon inquiring, we learn that the stool is created with layers of different coloured concrete, applied over the course of several days. “This is the kind of room where I’d like to sit and read a book. The palette is very muted here and that lends a sense of calm,” says Ellahi. We almost dose off, quietly thinking to ourselves how serene it would feel to curl up with a book in this corner.

BEAUTY

Hair Xpertise Argan Oil Pure argan oil works like magic for hair! Not only is it a great moisturizer for lips and skin, but also keeps hair hydrated and acts as a serum. It also keeps hair frizz-free and soft but the best part is, unlike other oils, it does not make your hair greasy when applied.

THE NOTEPAD Laiqa Hasan, owner of the eponymous salon and spa, shares her all-time favourite hair products for the summer

James Brown Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner I love using James Brown shampoo and conditioner. It’s a great volume-booster for your hair, especially in the summer when hair tends to get flat due to humidity.

78

John Frieda Brilliant Brunette John Frieda’s hair range is great for brunette hair! Be it the light-reflecting hair shampoo, conditioner, hair serum or even the colour gloss, the entire range is fantastic! My absolute favourite, however, is their colour gloss. It’s perfect for people who don’t want to dye their hair because, not only does it enhance your original hair colour but it also adds dimension and light to it.

L’Oreal Studio Matte and Messy I love to experiment with sea salt sprays, my favourite one being L’Oreal Studio Matte and Messy sea salt spray. Unfortunately, as I have short hair, it doesn’t have the same effect as it does on long hair. Spray it a little and then scrunch your hair to get natural tousled waves and curls! In the summer it’s a great alternative to heating irons and curlers! JULY 10-16 2016

Schwarzkopf Instant Volumising Powder I’ve recently started using Schwarzkopf instant volume powder for blow-drys. Instead of back combing your hair, this powder, in small doses, can go a long way. Just dab a little on the roots and it builds volume and height!

Lolane Hair Treatment Another product that I can swear by is Lolane’s natural hair mask. It’s a deep conditioning hair mask that restores and rebuilds brittle dry hair to healthier and more lustrous conditions.

Saeed Ghani Almond Oil Who doesn’t know about the benefits of this local herbal oil? A weekly application of almond oil by Saeed Ghani leaves your hair nourished, thick and also prevents hair fall.
