Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage JULY 2-8 2017
24
How would you describe yourr body type? I would say I fall in the pearrshaped category of body types. My upper body is tiny ny d. and my hips are a bit broad. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body has dramatically changed over the past five years and it’s all because off my change in lifestyle and nutrition. After I started working out, I’ve seen such a huge change in my body, it hasn’t just made me look good, but most importantly it makes me feel good. Now, that’s a feeling I always want to wake up with. How has your style changed over the years? My style hasn’t really changed over the years, but it has just progressed with time. I like dressing for my age and don’t like looking older or younger than I am. I always maintain a signature ‘Jannat’ style mantra, which is: dress to impress and less is more. I like to be understated, chic and classy. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My most troublesome area has to be my hips and thighs. Not so fun! How do you dress your body according to your body type? I prefer high-waisted trousers, skirts, and silhouettes that accentuate my figure. I love

any anything tha that starts m at my wa waist. Bec Because I hav a tiny have upp upper body, I highlight that area the most and tend tto go for cuts and shapes that make my b body look proportionate. I am a huge ffan of crop-tops, high-waisted bottoms, and of cou course, heels to give me some height! In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I have always believed that less is more. Overdressing can really kill your outfit and I think that keeping it simple and classy is the best way to step out. Don’t go over the top – it really doesn’t do anything good for you! Simplicity is the smartest form of elegance. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? High-waisted trousers, skirts, jumpsuits, crop-tops and pencil skirts. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I’m not a big fan of low necklines and mini skirts – I like straight cuts and most importantly I like being, feeling and looking comfortable yet classy at the same time. Attitude is everything, and that is what shows most in any outfit you wear.

IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY WITH HAFSA AHSAN AND BUSHRA SALEH JAFFRANI
Sisters and business ppartners,, Hafsa and Bushra share childhood memories, their strengths and weaknesses and what makes them inseparable!
What’s your first memory of each other? Hafsa: Playing with Barbies and Polly pockets! That’s what our childhood was about and also watching plenty of movies. Bushra: Hafsa is in every childhood memory of mine since we are only a year and few months apart. But when I do look back, a lot of Barbie dolls, Polly pockets and kitchen sets come to mind. Also, we come from a big family so we spent a lot of our childhood with our cousins. It was one adventure after the other! Hafsa was probably the most disciplined out of all of us. I wish could say the same thing about myself! Haha… What is the craziest thing you’ve done together? Hafsa: During A-levels we snuck our dad’s car out. To make matters worse, we got back very late since 8:30pm was way past our curfew. It’s a good thing we had a plane to catch the next morning otherwise we wouldn’t have heard the end of it. Bushra: We learned to drive at a very young age! Let’s just say we used that to our advantage. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Hafsa: We were rarely punished! Being the youngest of five siblings has its advantages. But we would get into occasional fights. Bushra: We would get away with a lot of things since we were the youngest of five. I don’t remember being punished ever but that’s because I was not the violent one. Hafsa has always been fiercely strong and strangely into wrestling and throwing punches. So she was the one who used to get punished for using me as her punching bag. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Hafsa: Bee has an elaborate shoe collection. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on her N21 satin flats. Bushra: If I could raid her closet I wouldn’t go for the clothes, I would go straight to her make-up and extensive brush collection. I’m the one with bare minimum needs while she has all the technical nitty gritties. I wouldn’t mind making additions to my small collection. If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Hafsa: I would take a day off and be carefree and spontaneous! Go on a ride or do something crazy which I wouldn’t normally do. JULY 2-8 2017

arguments all the time! To make up it is either a simple apology message or we will pretend it never happened, usually the latter! What is the one secret talent that your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Hafsa: I wish I could be as spontaneous as she is. Bushra is always on the brim of doing something crazy while I am the more responsible one. Also, she is super creative.
Bushra: I would get all my work done! Hafsa is efficient and never lazy when it comes to getting all her work out of the way. That’s why she is important for our brand as she manages tasks well and drives us out of the house even on our laziest of days. What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Hafsa: She is free-spirited and a go-getter. She sometimes makes impulsive decisions and doesn’t worry about the consequences. She is high-spirited so it’s always amusing being around her. Bushra: Hafsa is someone I can depend on. She is very loving and she is the one person who’s always there for you regardless of the circumstances. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Hafsa: We have a love-hate relationship. It’s five opinions in one room! We’ve grown accustomed to arguing and then pretending it never happened. We can barely hold a grudge for longer than a day. Bushra: We get into heated
29
JULY 2-8 2017
Bushra: Her will to get even the most boring tasks done. Even though she is never ready on time, her work is always structured and on time. She never slacks and is decisive! I can use some of that organisation and decision making power in my life. Also, Hafsa is very good with makeup. I wouldn’t mind having the
precision and finesse she has. Describe your sibling in the three words: Hafsa: Exuberant, fun-loving and creative. Bushra: Loving, caring and organised. Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Hafsa: This may sound like a cliché but she is a lot like Rebecca Bloomwood from Confessions of a Shopaholic. We have to restrain her and take away her shopping privileges since she can’t stop herself from purchasing what she sets her eyes on. Bushra: Betty from Archie comics. How are your personalities similar? Hafsa: They aren’t! Haha… we are poles apart. But it’s a good thing opposites attract. Bushra: We have very different personalities but many common interests such as food, clothes and TV shows. I can’t live without my sister because….. Hafsa: She is my other half, my best friend. The ying to my yang! Bushra: I have never lived without her! All four of my sisters are my support system. I can’t get through life without them.

INTERVIEW
He’s eccentric, he’s humourous, he’s Ali Xeeshan! He is also one of the most celebrated and inspiring contemporary designers in the fashion industry today. Known for his astute craftsmanship and unique play on colours, Xeeshan proves that pink really is the new black. Known for his energetic and extravagant demeanour, Xeeshan has been toasted among the fashion fraternity. Whether with a rooster atop his head or a monkey on the runway, Xeeshan always knows how to leave a mark JULY 2-8 2017
42
What is your idea of style? Something new, something old. Something borrowed, something branded. What turns you on creatively? Loud is proud. Silence is violence. Do you consider fashion a language? Yes. It is a global language. What are the three signs of beauty for you in a woman? Poise, passion and demure. Are you ever jealous of another designer’s success? Jealousy is the most useless emotion. Envious, maybe! Have you failed at anything?
43
JULY 2-8 2017
I have failed at things I have never tried. What are the few childhood memories that shaped you? My first drawing was a cartoon figure on my diaper. What do you fear? The day I lose my power to imagine. Your favourite sound? A voice from within. Word you use the most? Fabulous. Three things no one knows about you? I can stay up for three days, I can speak French and I failed second grade twice.
Three hidden talents? 1. I remember my dreams exactly as they occured. I can even draw them. 2. I can hypnotize a person in 13 seconds. 3. I can literally talk to animals. At this point in your career, do you seek validation from your clients, fashion critics or other successful designers? Oh please! What was the precise moment when you really decided that designing was your path I knew my path since the beginning Any lesson that success has taught you? Nothing lasts forever.
INTERIORS
THE CORNER WITH HIRA W ZEESHAN
The ever-so-charming Hira W Zeeshan welcomes us into her home and gives us a tour of her lavish drawing room and her favourite spaces. She delves into her love for interiors and gives us tips on how to make a house a home By Ibriz Sheikh
H
ira W Zeeshan’s home is among the most stunning houses we’ve seen in Karachi. Tucked away in a quiet street in Defence, her home is a beautiful sanctuary, which exudes luxury from the moment you enter. As we enter, we walk through a lush green garden where flowers are blooming and the grass freshly watered. Our charming host for the day awaits us at the elaborate entrance, and so begins our tour. With a house so beautiful, we question how difficult it must be to choose just one favourite corner, but Wassan answers, “I keep this room for my formal living. It was completed very recently and there should always be somewhere formal to entertain your guests.” And so, we are taken straight through a grand wooden and glass door, into her formal drawing room where we immediately feel as though we’ve stepped into a Parisian museum. With everything set to perfection and no cushion out of place, our attention is first drawn to the grey, gold and plum colour combination

44
which gives the room a regal feel. “When we were deciding on a theme for the room, I had these colours in mind,” she says, adding that: “SanaSafinaz then worked around my colours and incorporated them into the design process.” A large chandelier hangs in the middle of the room, with its light reflecting in the mirrored table directly below it and in the majestic mirror which hangs perfectly on the grey textured wall. Large floor-toceiling sliding windows allow us to view the picturesque garden from one side of the room, and the serene pool area from the other. Custom-made lamps sit on either side of one of the sofas, and the console under the mirror is home to some unique accents. What really brings the room together however, is the French panelling in antique gold running across all the walls. From the luxurious fabrics, to the play of textures, the sumptuous aesthetic is nothing short of fabulous and we now understand why Wassan loves to spend her time at home. We are then taken through a corridor and into the dining room. On our way, we spot the most fabulous mirrored cabinet, tall planters and beautiful mirrored console tables. Through the sliding doors, and into the dining room, we feel like we’re in Downton Abbey! “I love Downton Abbey and inspiration was definitely drawn from it for my dining room,” Wassan explains. A black glossy table sits in the centre of the dining area, surrounded by suede, gold-studded chairs, while a faux fur chest of drawers sits against the wall which is laden with fabric as opposed to wallpaper (we touched to check and it’s definitely fabric!). “I wanted my dining area to match with the drawing room, hence the same colour scheme has been incorporated here,” she tells us. The space is the perfect blend of Victorian and modern eras, and all the personal touches that Wassan has added to her home make it a charming space. As our day with Wassan comes to an end, we’re thrilled to have spent some time in the luxury of Wassan’s home, and leave hoping she’ll invite us back for another cup of tea!
