THE CUT
FASHION
Anush Ammar Anush is so on-trend in this fuchsia pink kaftan! We absolutely love the cutwork detailing on the sleeves and the pearl tassels. She keeps the rest of her look simple with minimal make-up and her hair side-swept. She completes her look with Louis Vuitton’s Petite Malle side bag and black heels. TEdit loves!
Daneese Ali Daneese looks oh so trendy in these Rose official ripped jeans and slogan tee! She teams her look with Bottega Venetta loafers and a Chloe side bag. With her minimal accessories, she makes a bold statement with a red lip and loose curls. Way to go, Queen Dee!

Mehreen Amir Mehreen Amir plays with earthy tones and opts for this simple, long silhouette for a minimalistic look. Her all black cape does all the talking as she teams it with chic khaki pants and black Chanel mules. We also love how her subtle make-up and hair totally complement her look!

JULY 23-29 2017
Mishal Asad Fun and summery comes to mind looking at Mishal’s outfit! She goes for a tangerine tunic with super cool sleeve detailing – with sleek hair and bold winged eyeliner; her make-up is just right! She tops off the look with a neutral Chanel bag and some quirky Sophia Webster polka dot flats. P.S. we love the tangerine piping on her tulip shalwarr matching her kurta!
Shazia Ammar Shazia sure knows how to work stripes! She wears a navy blue and white jacket with white culottes and a tank – she teams the outfit with matching white shoes and a clutch. We think this a smart and chic look for any semi-formal event!

FASHION
The talent behind the fashion brand Leelas, who studied Law from SOAS in London, and later Fashion Design from Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, talks to us about her personal style! Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage JULY 23-29 2017
42
How would you describe your body type? I would say I’m petite. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body is pretty much the same, but I e, have recently adopted a healthier lifestyle, and going to CORE is now my favourite morning activity. s? How has your style changed over the years? Having lived in three of the largest n, metropolitan cities in the world (London, New York City and Karachi) my style has definitely evolved overtime with exposure and experience to different cultures. However, I’ve stayed true to my classic style so I don’t believe a person’s signature style necessarily changes. I strongly believe fashion is what’s trending, but style is what you pick for yourself.
In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I think succumbing to pressure and adopting something just because it’s ‘fashionable’ or ‘designer’ makes one lose their identity.
In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? I believe I don’t have a troublesome area and I also believe others should adopt the same ideology – love yourself!
Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Whatever the requirement of the day is, but my guilty pleasure is high-waisted pants.
How do you dress your body according to your body type? I don’t dress according to any specific body type, I dress according to what I want to project, which is how I perceive myself.
What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? Anything that’s inappropriate for the occasion, and by inappropriate I mean whatever I think is inappropriate.

THE VAULT WITH SANA MAHFOOZ OMAR
Sana Mahfooz Omar, the brains behind jewellery brand Accessories by Jade unlocks her vault and tells us about her precious trinkets
How and when did you become interested in jewellery? When I moved to Dubai in 2008, I didn’t know a lot of people here, so I used to spend my time browsing the shops. I was also inspired by the boutiques where artisans from all over the Middle East sell their craft products. The diversity and creativity of design, material and style is what really got me interested because until that point, Pakistani mainstream fashion had no place for luxury and designer costume or fashion jewellery. There was only real jewellery or imitation which tried very hard to look like real jewellery. I witnessed the variety of craft, materials and motifs being worn in the Middle East which was fascinating. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery (precious or costume)? Even though I wasn’t very fond of precious jewellery, I am very partial to our traditional Sindhi jewellery styles. My grandmother’s dohurri (every Sindhi woman has one) was always my favourite. I love the dohurri’s balance of rusticity and majesty, the beaten gold beads and colourful glass stones. Where did you get them? I inherited my dadi’s dohurri. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? I like to collect small trinkets from my travels as
49
JULY 23-29 2017
souvenirs; nothing big or expensive but something local to remind me of the places I’ve visited. So there’s nothing I’m emotionally attached to but lots of little pieces to remember places by. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? All the precious trinkets I have signify an important event in my life; my first salary, the birth of my children and recently my 40th birthday. I guess that’s how they were acquired — through milestones! Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I like to be spontaneous, so maybe something will take my fancy one of these days.

IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY WITH SHIZA HASSAN AND AISAM UL HAQ QURESHI
Pakistan’s top tennis player, Aisam ul Haq Qureshi and his sister Shiza Hassan, a designer, take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about their childhood antics. From taking daring rollercoaster rides together to getting in trouble for scratching their father’s car, these siblings share it all
What’s your first memory of each other? Shiza: We are only a year and a half apart. He’s been by my side since I opened my eyes. Aisam: Her following me everywhere when we were young and I used to swap our milk bottles all the time so I could drink more. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Shiza: We are both quite outdoorsy. Taking the scariest rollercoaster rides fearlessly is one of them however. We have yet to do some crazy skydiving or deep sea diving adventures together. Aisam: Shiza is somewhat not a very crazy person. The craziest thing was probably going for a swim in the canal when we were very young. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Shiza: We were a team and the mischief was also done as a comradeship. I remember we were playing with our little dinky cars, and made scratch trails all along our dad’s new car that he JULY 23-29 2017

had just brought home that day. It didn’t go down well with my dad and that has to be the most vivid punishment. Aisam: For scratching our first family car while playing with our toy cars on it. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Shiza: It would have to be one of his many stylish track pants. Aisam: Her pj’s! They look super comfy and too cute.
calm in every situation and pretend nothing’s happened. Aisam: Remembering each and every object at home, knowing exactly what to buy that would look good in the house and her talent for fashion. Describe your sibling in three words Shiza: Cool, generous, thoughtful. Aisam: Loving, caring, emotional.
If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Shiza: Be a little more selfish and throw my weight around a bit. Aisam: The first thing that I would do is take a vacation.
Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Shiza: He’s like spiderman. Does good without seeking gratitude in return. Aisam: My sister is one of a kind so can’t really compare her to a fictional character.
What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Shiza: He has a heart of gold. There is no one like him! Aisam: Super loving and always puts others before herself.
How are your personalities similar? Shiza: We are very similar at the core and have a shared set of values I believe. Aisam: We both put family first.
If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Shiza: I have to talk things out to be fine. He’s less talkative and least fussy. Aisam: We usually make up by apologising, hugging and by me buying her some gifts.
I can’t live without my brother/sister because… Shiza: Life would lose meaning without the feeling of the beautiful bond that we share and the love I feel for him. Aisam: Because she is my best friend. I can share anything and everything with her. I love her to bits. She is the best sister in the whole wide world.
What is the one secret talent your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Shiza: The ability to stay

THE CORNER WITH SHIRIN HASSAN
Ace designer, Shirin Hassan invites us into her beautiful home and gives us a tour of her favourite corner. She talks about her extensive painting collection and tells us a story about each of the unique pieces she’s picked up during her travels By Ibriz Sheikh
A
s we enter the beautiful home of Shirin Hassan, we first notice how lavish it is. A grand chandelier hangs in the foyer and Hassan shares why it is unique. “I hand carried this Turkish chandelier from Istanbul, especially for my entrance,,” she says. Quickly making our way inside, our charming host for the day awaits us outside her drawing room; where she loves entertaining her guests. There’s a certain charm in the way she’s decorated this space, and she’s made it look both lavish and cosy at the same time. We can’t help but notice the walls adorned with beautiful, unique pieces of art. “My house is known as an art gallery as we have around 40 paintings in my lounge,” Hassan says. She adds that, “My husband is very fond of paintings by Gulgee, Bashir Mirza, Moazzam Ali, Zoya, Iqbal Mehdi and Rind, amongst others.” Their love for art is evident in the three spectacular pieces that hang

above a sofa, upholstered in bottle green coloured velvet. The same sofa, and the one beside it, is home to some fabulous silk embroidered cushions which Hassan incorporated to add colour to the drawing room. “To add colour to the space, I picked up a variety of cushions from Delhi,” Hassan shares as we perch ourselves on the sofa and get comfortable. Our attention is drawn to the fabulous carpet beneath us, which makes a bold statement in the room, with its vivid colour palette and striking design. A glass table with a carved wooden edge sits in the centre. Placed atop the table are some unique pieces that Hassan has picked up during her travels. “I have been collecting plates from different countries like Turkey, London and Morocco,” she tells us. Across from us sit two beautiful chairs, with beautifully painted birds in a tropical setting. Teamed with the more traditional design of the sofa, the chairs add a modern twist to the regal look of the drawing room. The animal theme continues with a handcrafted fish decoration piece which sits atop a mahogany shelf. We are intrigued by the variety of different pieces that make Hassan’s house a home. “I have collected all my decoration pieces from different countries, including Morocco and Spain,” she shares. From the deep hues incorporated in the drawing room, to the luxe fabrics and unique pieces, Hassan’s favourite corner is truly charming and truly is an ode to old world charm. The space offers an eclectic yet tasteful aesthetic and we loved having our cups of tea, chatting with Hassan. But as the day comes to an end, and it’s time for us to leave, we’ve enjoyed spending our afternoon in Hassan’s favourite corner.

FOOD
THE NOTEPAD Dessert connoisseur and extraordinaire, Amna Tauqeer known for her delicious works of art, her too-prettyto-eat cakes, brownies and other delectable desserts shares with us some of her impressive dessert spread settings for different events!
The top of the list has to be the pure chocolate installations that I did for Magnum as part of their Magnum chocolate party in 2015. This was a challenge and then some! The weather couldn’t have been more horrid and consequently, the chocolate installations, more than a 1000 pure chocolate giveaways and dessert spread for over 1000 people proved to be a gargantuan task!
Having done countless dessert spreads, I came up with the idea of a dessert wall instead of a regular dessert table. The wall was the focal point of the baby shower and ended up being used as a photo backdrop as the party progressed!
Having worked on quite a few fashion shoots, this set for a designer’s shoot has to be my absolute favourite. The theme was ‘Sugar Rush’ and the palette was pastels. Half of the candy in the shoot was our in-house creation and the rest was flown in from abroad. The place did end up looking like a whimsical candy shop and I couldn’t have been happier with the final result.
The chocolate installation for the second magnum chocolate party was a tribute to the surrealistic moment. Team Raka and I had a fabulous time conceptualising the installations. The task of translating our vision into chocolate was challenging, to say the least and hadn’t been done in Pakistan before that. Quite a few sleepless nights and about 80 kilogrammes of the finest Belgian chocolate later, the installations received huge accolades from every forum!
“Striking and fun” — this was the brief given by the client for this dessert spread. The wheels for the spread were sourced from a small town near Hyderabad and lugged to Karachi on the day of the event!
What makes this cake so special is the fact that we had about 24 hours to create this giant masterpiece that featured hand moulded flowers, edible lace and embossing. It was a gigantic 80 pound cake and stood 5 feet tall! JULY 23-29 2017
