A Quick Bite With Meat The Cheese
Meat the Cheese is a joint venture by Mustafa Totana, Head Coach and Owner of Fit in 5, and his two younger brothers Muffadal and Yousuf Totana. The inception of Meat the Cheese is rooted in the plain and absolutely pure love for fine cuts of meat and different types of cheese that the brothers share. Karachi, although a melting pot of some of the best cuisines; lacked good quality and authentic options in that regard. One had to try quite a bit to find a tender, juicy and flavourful piece of authentic tenderloin steak. This and the spirit of entrepreneurship led to the birth of the Concept behind MTC- a modern cheese cellar lounge that would be a hub for all hardcore meat and cheese lovers serving over 12 different types of organic, unprocessed cheese. An R&D period of more than a year helped them gather the best team of chefs that would create an experimental and bold menu unlike any other in Pakistan with delicacies that offer an experience in every bite. MTC is also planning to launch in Lahore in a couple of months - a city of food lovers where a good “melt-in-your-mouth” steak is rare to find. Additionally, over 6 new variations to the original menu, with new styles of cooking, prime meat cuts and bold new flavours are launching this month to give their customers new reasons to keep coming back! Chipotle Bee-Eef-Eff Burger Unlike many beef burgers we’ve had this burger in chipotle sauce with melted cheese is served with sweet potato to beef up the matter! This burger can definitely become your go-to dish at Meat the Cheese!

How would you describe your body type? In one word: Petite. Has your body type changed over the last five years? No, not quite. I don’t gain or lose weight easily so my body has pretty much remained the same. How has your style changed over the years? My style has changed drastically over the years. I had my tomboy phase, I had an emo phase (not kidding!), had a time where I was all girly and less was never more for me and finally I’m more comfortable in basics. What item in your closet do you wear the most? My nude pumps – they go with everything! What is the one piece of clothing that you would never wear? I don’t know that yet. For now, I’d like to wear everything that I can think of. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing? I think not dressing according to your body type is the biggest mistake anywhere. What’s your favourite item in your closet? My nude pumps. What’s a style every woman should try at least once in her life? Style is very personal, in my opinion. I think every woman should try the style that she’s personally afraid of. Just do it for kicks and giggles and see where it takes you. If you could have any TV or movie character’s wardrobe, whose would you chose and why? Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, for obvious reasons. She had the best wardrobe and style too, of course. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? High-waisted anything works for me. Highwaisted pants are the most flattering on my body shape since they accentuate my waist and give my legs some length at the same time.

IT RUNS IN THE
FAMILY With Shoaeb Shams and
Anny Shoaeb Anny Shoaeb, founder of Fashion Central and husband Shoaeb Shams share with us some endearing details of their happily married life. From carefully managing things to each other’s liking to demonstrating love in the most realistic ways, this couple has it all figured out
How and where did you both meet? Interestingly, not many people would believe it but our first meeting was totally arranged with both set of parents being present. Not an ideal setting but worked out tremendously well. What did you like/ dislike about each other in your first meeting? Anny: The first meeting was arranged so there was not much interaction. Shoaeb: Well I was immediately in love with her stunning looks and amazing grace. How long did it take to decide that he/she was the one you wanted to marry? Anny: About a week’s time from the first meeting. Yep it was quick to say the least. Shoaeb: Well I had decided after the first meeting and was after my parents to make this happen. How do you demonstrate your love in different ways? Anny: I think my way of showing love is to be very conscious about his likes and dislikes and his particular mood swings. I know him very well so I know how he is going to react in particular situations so I make sure the situation is managed to his best liking. JULY 15-21 2018
36
Shoaeb: Anny is a romantic, I am not so much but I do make sure that our special days like birthdays and anniversaries are always celebrated in a special way. Of course, she loves to be pampered and I love making sure she is, I guess that would be my best way of showing my love. What frustrates you most about your partner? Anny: I am always eager and ready to tackle any situation and taking a decision right there and then, whereas Shoaeb is always calm and takes his time and always delays making decisions on the spot which is very frustrating. Shoaeb: Her mood swings are way too much to handle. Sometimes I have no idea what her reaction would be to a particular situation. Who makes up first if you have a fight or argument? Anny: Mostly Shoaeb. Shoaeb: Always me. One thing you love about each other? Anny: Shoaeb is very caring and supportive. Shoaeb: Anny is very understanding and really gets me. Something you would want to change about your partner? Anny: He should start listening to me…lol. Shoaeb: Probably the mood swings. Something you two have in common? Anny: We both have a serious sweet tooth. Shoaeb: Food and travel. Who keeps the room the tidiest? Anny: Obviously me. Shoaeb: Anny does and actually I make a mess so that she can make it tidy. Your best memory together so far? Anny: There are so many, it’s difficult to pick one. Shoaeb: Probably our evening in Switzerland when we left the kids at the hotel and had a fun night out. Your greatest strength as a couple? Anny: We understand each other very well and we gel well. Shoaeb: We always have each other’s back and are supportive of each other. Describe your relationship in three words? Anny: Awesome, fulfilling and complete. Shoaeb: Loving, caring and understanding.

Style 101 With Sanam N. Khan
1
A trend you’re ready to see die? Gucci trainers and Hermès oran sandals - they are tacky, commercial and just need to go!
2
Which runway trends will you sport this summer? Tulle! Tulle was all over Milan Spring 2018 Fashion Week and I love it! It’s festive, work wearable and glamorous all at the same time!
3
Sanam N. Khan, an avid traveller, a lover of fashion and a selfconfessed foodie gives us a lesson on the chicest trends to rock this summer! Settled in London, but a true Karachiite at heart; Sanam’s colourful and quirky style caught our fancy. Find out more about her and how she has fun with fashion!
When in doubt, where do you look for style inspiration? London street style! Living in this incredible city, London is famed for being the cultural hub of street style fashion. It’s a place where you can wear your wackiest outfit to breakfast and no one will even bat an eyelid. However, it’s also a place where you can be ultra-chic and businesslike one day and trend-led the next. Just by wandering around, you will stumble across new cuts, fabrics and colour ways that you had not spotted previously.

A summer essential you won’t leave the house without? Sunblock with a high SPF and sunglasses - I have a weakness for Celine sunnies!
Which items from your SS18 wardrobe will you keep for Fall? The darker single colored pleated skirts- just add a cropped or longline jumper over a basic tee and you’re good to go!
5
Which five must-have items does one need in their closet at all times? In no particular order: 1. Nude sandals/heels 2. A white and black basic tee/vest/body 3. A pair of dark wash denim skinny jeans 4. A white pair of sneakers (Love the puma heart trainers; I’m on my 2nd pair!) 5. A black leather jacket
6
What is the easiest way to revamp your wardrobe without breaking the bank? The first move is to actually see what you already have in your wardrobe. Pull out stuff you haven’t worn in ages - you will probably find things that you’d forgotten about and haven’t worn for ages. Pull out old trousers and hem them into culottes or cropped skinnies. Pair them with a basic white tee and statement earrings - which can be worn throughout the seasons and will often last for many years to come!
What item on your wish list is worth the splurge? The perfect work bag: Balenciaga’s Laundry Cabas Calfskin Tote.
8
7
What is your signature look this season? A lot of white, prints - lemon, floral and anything quirky, lace tops, pleated midi skirts and playsuits! Also neon eyeshadow on extra sunny days is a must!
9
What was your favourite designer showcase for SS18? Despite living outside of Pakistan, I have to confess I still am partial towards our designers - the talent in Pakistan is endless and blows my mind every year - I think I’m leaning towards Farah Talib Aziz’s SS18 showcase! Internationally I would have to pick Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent RTW SS18 all black collection!

FOOD
Table Talk with
Sweet
Tooth
Having studied textiles, Umer Hussain never imagined opening up a restaurant. Despite some hesitance from his family, due to inadequate experience in the field, Umer managed to make a name for himself in the food industry. Sweet Tooth is known for introducing quirky desserts and now fast food as well, from chocolate gol gappas to cheese stuffed burger buns, Umer has done it all. He describes why art is such a prominent part of Sweet Tooth be it paintings or music. We sat down with Umer to talk about his new ventures and how he manages to keep the standards high across all his branches
What inspired you to establish a dessert centered restaurant? When we started Sweet Tooth there was no other competition in the market. I always had a sweet tooth and felt like there was a huge void in the market. Since I loved desserts so much I jumped into the business myself. It was never my thing; I was into textiles, so I would say my love for desserts inspired me to bring Sweet Tooth into existence. What is the process of developing a new menu or a new dish at Sweet Tooth? One of the most important things that we keep in view before creating a new dish is that none of the other restaurants should be doing it. There are no cooks or chefs here at Sweet Tooth, the workers here just follow a recipe and the recipe is developed by me! What is your favorite thing from Sweet Tooth’s menu? Everything! It has to be my favourite or it wouldn’t be on the menu. My preferences keep changing however, these days I really enjoy Fruitylicious from the menu. What motivated you to establish a branch in Hunza and Mushpuri after Lahore and not in the rest of the big cities? Sweet Tooth has never been about money. It is more about experimenting and testing our limits. Team JULY 15-21 2018
40
Sweet Tooth tends to think out of the box in all matters. The idea behind opening up restaurants in Mushkpuri, Hunza, Gawadar and now Quetta was that whenever somebody looks up Pakistan on Google, all the places that pop up, that is where Sweet Tooth should be at. In your opinion what differentiates Lahore and Hunza in terms of taste and food choice? Since there is a lot of local tourism, a lot of people from Punjab are already familiar with us so it’s pretty much the same, I would say. Art is a big part of Sweet Tooth’s décor and it certainly isn’t limited to a single art style. Where do you get your inspiration from for such unique art work? It’s not just the décor that is filled with art it is much more than that. Everything we do has to be a piece of art. I am not exactly an artist but I sure am a huge admirer of art. Everything that you see in a Sweet Tooth restaurant is designed by me. There’s never an interior designer in the team. I draw my inspiration from all the things that are around me. How is Sweet Tooth’s menu different from what other dessert restaurants are offering? “Creating a whole new ice-cream culture” was the tag line that we started off with. We are creating desserts like never before. We have a chocolate burger, chocolate pizza and chocolate gol gappay, and then there is the butter scotch lava cake and so on. We came up with all of
41
JULY 15-21 2018
these things first and the rest of the restaurants followed suit. Since we are the pioneers, anything that the rest of the restaurants are offering is going to be off our list. We didn’t have a good experience with marketing our products as they got falsely claimed by other restaurants. Now we are trying to be more hush about the ideas that we are going to bring fourth until we execute them with a bang. We know you have a close connection with art since you’ve been promoting music and new artists. Are there any gigs happening in the near future that we should be looking forward to? Sweet Tooth live was an attempt to provide
a platform to new artists who take music as their passion. We had a live session in Hunza just the other day; it was a huge success and very entertaining. The sad thing is that most young people these days are more into raves and drugs and have forgotten what it is to experience good live music. Regardless, Sweet Tooth is always going to have live sessions, so yes there are a lot gigs coming up. We’ve heard you will also be trying your hands at lawn pretty soon, is that true? Yes, that is indeed true. It’s going to be called Sweet Tooth Ki Lawn. Most of our patrons are women, and what does a woman love the most? Chocolates and these days lawn. Since textiles are something that I have a degree in, I wanted to incorporate it into my work as well. The idea is wear your cravings. Desserts from our menu have been designed into clothing. What is the secret behind sustaining a successful restaurant? People need to know that it is something that is done out of sheer passion. There are always going to be problems but you should have a game plan. We have standard set SOPs and all my employees are loyal to me. So a good team I would say. What are some of the challenges of being a restaurateur? Opening up in Hunza was a challenge; it’s hard to manage a single restaurant in Lahore how much more difficult it would be managing a restaurant in Hunza. It was a test to explore our own capabilities, to test how well we perform even while being remotely inaccessible. A while ago somebody threw pampers in the washroom of Sweet Tooth Mushkpuri and we had to dig it all out, four feet down, destroy the floor and redo the entire sewage system. Setbacks are always going to be there, what matters is how you cope with challenges. What is in store for Sweet Tooth in the future? If we speak locally, Sweet Tooth is coming to the inner city with the most exquisite interior and art work teamed with of course, exceptional food. Other than that, we are expanding into the US, Canada, Australia and UAE. We are going to have two restaurants in Canada, one in Mississauga and one in Brampton. In America we are registered in seven states. Here in Pakistan it was more about exploring and experimenting. The reason that we don’t open up in Islamabad or Karachi is because it was never about money. We’ve been aiming high since the beginning and we just got started so there is for sure a lot in store for Sweet Tooth. JULY 15-21 2018

LIFE STYLE
With Sundus Talpur Academically trained as a sculptor, Sundus Talpur delved into the world of jewels after getting inspired by her mother who has been designing jewellery for the past 15 years. She talks about her design philosophy and every little detail that goes into creating her pieces
JULY 15-21 2018
44
How and when did you get into jewellery design? My mother is a jewellery designer since the past 15 years, so that’s really where I got it from. After I graduated from college, I was a sculptor and had full access to jeweller workshops. I used it for my sculpture making and es used goldsmithering techniques for my art work. I am a maker, and it was in the similarity of process that I found my true calling. My first gold cufff was a one-off piece that I had entirelyy carved and sculpted by hand, I cast it in 22k gold and it marked the beginning of this journey. After launching a small collection at Aura Art Jewellery, I went to England to do my Masters in Jewellery Design from Central Saint Martins and then went on to launch my first collection after my MA. m for Where do you draw inspiration from your pieces? ctices When I design, I look at traditions and practices e as from within our culture and use those hing my design inspiration, to create something urally new and contemporary that is still culturally aditionally rich. If and traditionally you’ve seen any of my work, it’s very organic, and texture based in 22k gold. All my pieces take inspiration from a type of textile, whether it be weaves, laces and now more culturally appropriate and heritage textiles. The connection with textiles has become my brand identity, and makes my work texturally rich. What makes your designs unique and distinct from others? I am what we call a ‘designer-maker’. All my pieces are hand-
45
JULY 15-21 2018
made and mostly only one offs, which makes it stand out in our precious jewel jewellery market. What also makes p my pieces unique is the idea of taking new contemporary designs while incorporating traditional trends of gold jewellery. T us about your latest Tell colle collection? ‘Dorr’ is a collection of 22k gold jewellery that dr draws inspiration from South Asian textile textiles. The design is contemporary and weara wearable, it’s made of statement pieces with sculptural sculp qualities yet it speaks of our textile heritage, keeping up with traditions of wearing 22k gold jewellery. The heart of this project is in the use of philanthropy in luxury design. Each jewellery element contains the ‘fired out’ details of hand-weave and embroidery. The woven textiles, and embroideries used to create the textures of each piece were purchased from artisans in Hala and the Umerkot district of Sindh. A percentile of the profit will be given back to the artisan communities involved in the making of this collection. Your favourite design from your collection and why? My Hurnich and weaved bead necklace is my favourite, it’s an amalgamation of all things my brand stands for. It’s a play of delicate forms and textures, where each bead and motif was sculpted by hand. It’s a full gold necklace, which is contemporary and easy to pair with eastern and western dresses. What is your design philosophy? The idea is to take the tradition of wearing gold jewellery
What are the current trends in jewellery? Statement jewellery! To wear a statement necklace and just pair it with diamond studs, or pearl tops, we don’t have to be all ‘matchy matchy’. Wear one ring or cuff and just let that do the talking.
How do you look at the market here and how do you want to improve it through your work? I’m not out to improve the market, we have an amazing jewellery industry - it just needs a proper platform. We have great jewellery designers and craftsmen yet all the work is pushed into ‘accessories’ right with shoes and bags. Not that I’m undermining anything else, but jewellery, like all other products needs to be given a proper place in the fashion industry. This is an area where we need to look at international jewellery and fashion industries and take inspiration from there.
What is the biggest faux pas a woman can make when wearing jewellery? Over doing it; everything in the locker does not have to be on you! Wear jewellery that brings out your personality, doesn’t drown it.
A celebrity you’d like to see your designs on? I’d love to see my stuff on Meesha Shafi. She stands for all the things I believe in, she knows how to make a statement. I’d love to see how my pieces could be styled on her.
Where do you see yourself and your label in the next 4-5 years? My current plan is to build the brand locally, and then InshAllah I’d like to see my product in the international market in due time.
Your favourite jewellery designer? I think my favourite international jeweller is the late Andrew Grima. His work really speaks to me and he was one of the pioneers of breaking tradition when it comes to precious fine jewellery.
and setting it in the contemporary. I think my product has appealed to all people who love metal but don’t wear gold unless it is in a traditional setting. I want my designs to be new and wearable, yet they are timeless in their nature. It’s not about purchasing but investing in a piece.

Times Meesha Shafi Truly Inspired Us
We W e all need rol role models, especially in today’s world. S omeone that sspeaks up when no one is speaking. Someone S omeone that ta Someone talks about the things no one talks a bout. Someone that inspires us to be a better about. vversion ersion of ourse ourselves. Meesha Shafi is definitely one o off those people people. Meesha has made her mark, be iitt in modelling, a acting and more recently, music. In 2 013, Meesha Shafi was named among the 100 2013, m ost influential people in Pakistan by international most ffranchise ranchise Hello M Magazine. And here we bring you 8 times Meesha truly inspired us with her views
I’ve learnt to ignore men who feel threatened by powerful women I can only speak for myself, and here I would definitely say being selective and confident about my choices has helped. The other thing to remember is hard work! A lot of it. And consistency. There are rarely any short cuts to success Misogyny is rampant in our surroundings and showbiz is no different Who I am is all because of the environment I grew up in, which was very progressive, enlightened and free. I am a child of privilege in that even though we had no money, we were a house full of artists. How we lived was very rooted in our culture and yet, at the same time, we were encouraged to be open to change. I often see people scared of things they don’t understand, and so [my art] often exists to challenge people and push them out of their comfort zone
My greatest achievements are yet to come. But the ones that have already come along the way have taught me how important it is to be humble. To keep one’s ego in check! As our ego and arrogance can often be our ultimate downfall I approach the future with nothing but hope and prayers for our country. It doesn’t matter how much one plans, the future of our careers depends on the future of Pakistan
