Dazzle by Sarah

Sarah Asif of Dazzle by Sarah specialises in creating dainty and sophisticated khussas and jootis featuring stunning craftsmanship and vibrant hues. She shares with us her love for exceptional handwork and traditional jootis as well as some interesting details about the exquisite footwear inside her vault! JULY 28-AUGUST 3 2019

28

How and when did you develop an interest in designing footwear? Handcrafted products have always caught my eye since childhood. Seeing my grandmother wearing hand weaved and hand embellished dresses so casually really fascinated me. I remember going to her wardrobe and coming across jootis, dresses and clutches luxuriously weaved with kora dabka and semi-precious gems. I would take them out and create looks on me and would secretly wish of having them one day as my assets. So in short, handcraft has always been my first love! Being a typical Pakistani girl, handcrafted jootis have always been my go-to shoes for casual wear as well as festive wear. But the fact that they would always cause blisters if worn for a while put me off! This annoyed me to a point where I decided to abandon my vast shoe collection and move to mules and padded shoes to give my feet some life. Keeping in line my love for handwork and traditional Pakistani jootis, I decided to step in the footwear industry. This brought me to fetching a piece of paper and a pencil and sketching out my first ever khussa pattern for the girls out there who crave for handcrafted luxury jootis like me. Which pair of khussas are your personal favourite from your collection? Pink Lotus from Dazzle X Shiza Hassan Eid Collection! That’s my personal favourite as it is a product of five different handwork techniques known by very few karigars in pockets of Pakistan. It is meticulously weaved with pink and white hued cut glass beads, hand-dyed silk thread loops, layers of shaded sequins, Swarovski crystals and hand embroidery. Is there any shoe you are emotionally attached to and why? That would be the Pink Lotus. It took me a day simply to decide on the basic material selection and the colour palette to ensure the right amount of pizazz while keeping it all subtle and classy for the festive season. I am glad I went for pastel hues as it was loved and admired by clients worldwide! Tell us about the first pair of shoes that you designed. The first pair I designed and launched was Adele. The

design aesthetics included chevrons encrusted with handdyed peach silk thread knots, pearls, sequins, dabka and gold beads to give a royal twist to the classic footwear. I was so eager to try out different handwork techniques in just one pair of shoes that the karigars had to tell me to save some for the next designs in line. However the Adele jootis have around 6 unique handwork techniques. Are there any materials that you would like to explore further? I believe that there is a dearth of handcrafted shoes in Pakistan. We are exploring and experimenting in different traditional footwear categories but Dazzle jootis have to be the queen of all the footwear because of their unbeatable design aesthetics and comfort. How would you describe your signature aesthetic? It’s all about the newest trend in town! Sorbet shades, delicate embellishments, a blend of classic and contemporary handwork is what sets us apart in terms of designing. We keep evolving our design aesthetics as per our customer’s needs as well as the latest fads on the streets while keeping our core, the traditional jooti shape consistent.

Blogger and marketer, Vanessa Alam rises up to our rapid fire challenge. From wanting to become a pilot and rebellious teenage days to her pet peeves and what she loves most about her job, Vanessa shares it all!

How did you get into marketing? I was in my first year of my Bachelors in Marketing and Media and decided to take a semester off because I needed a break. During that time off from university, I started an internship at Sunday Times where I helped kick start their Digital Marketing and when it was time to leave at the end of my internship period, I was offered a job there. I was then the Digital Marketing Specialist at Sunday Times which made me who I am professionally today. What is the first thing you remember wanting to become as a child? I remember wanting to be a pilot. Back then I didn’t have the fear of heights and was super adventurous. What is the worst thing that has ever happened to you on the job? How did you handle the situation? Oh I can never forget this, I had a meeting with a renowned brand’s Marketing head and I forgot my notepad on which I had jotted down all the points I wanted to talk about and wasn’t even carrying my laptop. But luckily I had read over the pointers a few times after writing them down. JULY 28-AUGUST 3 2019

30

Also, I pretended to be really confident. In my opinion, that’s the key. Be so confident that nobody can tell you don’t actually know what you’re talking about. What is the best thing about your job? The exposure; as a blogger and a marketer, I get to meet people from all walks of life, get to interact with representatives of various businesses big and small and that made me a better person. I’ve become more patient and accepting. What is the most rebellious thing you did as a teenager? I was very rebellious as a teenager and I gave my parents and teachers quite a tough time. What is your go to excuse to get out of an event? I try to make it to as many events as possible because I think it’s rude not to show up if someone has invited you. But if it’s something I’m really not interested in, I usually say my mother needs the car. If you had to choose another career what would you be doing? I’d be a human rights activists or the minister for minorities in Pakistan. What social stigma does society need to get over? Discrimination on the basis of religion.

31

JULY 28-AUGUST 3 2019

What’s the closest thing to real magic? True, unconditional love (friends, family, a special someone). What is your current obsession? Being around positive people who I love and of course, my newly Keratin infused hair. What is a pet peeve you have? There’s many but the biggest probably is not being on time. What is one fashion trend that can never let you down? Flared jeans/pants with a nicely fitting shirt always look good. Also, oversized sweaters with skinny jeans are something I feel comfortable in. What is the silliest nick name ever given to you? There are two actually, one given to me by my paternal grandmother, Mutki and then a lot of people also call me Neeesu. If animals could talk, which animal would be the most annoying? I don’t think any animal can be annoying. God made us all unique and so I accept and love each and everything for its uniqueness. P.S. I love animals. What is your advice for keeping love alive? Find happiness in each other’s happiness. Communicate, love unconditionally and just have faith. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A very happy businesswoman with a beautiful family.
