FASHION

How would you describe your body type? I’m tall, slim and slender. I have a straight figure, and I’m glad. I’m not one of those girls who like curvy or voluptuous figures anyway! Has your body type changed over the last five years? I wanted to get rid of my baby fat so I became proactive about going to the gym and dieting. But the one thing I never gave up on was sweets. It’s a necessity in one’s life! How has your style changed over the years? I don’t really think my style has changed because I’ve always kept it classy and simple, and I think that never goes out of fashion. At most, I experiment with whatever’s trending but if it doesn’t suit me then it’s a big no! Fashion for me is what you feel comfortable in. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? I’m happy with the way my figure is but I can be self-conscious about my calves. They are chunky compared to the rest of my body.

The super-stylish fashionista breaks down her style. Find out all her style secrets and learn the do’s and don’ts in her fashion rulebook Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

How do you dress your body according to your body type? Since I’m slim and slender, I like to add curves to my frame with peplum style dresses and tops. I’m obsessed with bootleg jeans and trousers because they are great for slender women as they add shape and dimension. I also feel skinny jeans look fabulous on me. To be honest, I feel I can carry off most styles because I don’t have a full figure and hence I won’t end up looking vulgar. A long top or sweater with culottes or skinny jeans is my everyday casual look. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? The biggest mistake women make is showing too much skin. I strongly believe that showing too much skin doesn’t make you look sexy! Also, don’t hide in the folds of your baggy outfit and don’t try to JUNE 11-17 2017

squeeze yourself into something just for the sake of being able to say ‘I’m a size so-and-so’. Thirdly, playing up your outfit with a couple of carefully chosen pieces of jewellery is a definite do. I really admire women who have the talent to mix and match and can pull off a new trend. Overdoing it however, is one of the worst fashion mistakes out there and probably something you want to avoid. Lastly, women here don’t dress according to their age. They dress more maturely and it makes them look much older. You have your whole life ahead of you to dress maturely; don’t take away your youth and innocence already! Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I don’t wear a specific style of silhouette that suits my body because no matter what I wear, I make it my own. Also, I’m lucky because I have a petite frame and I can easily fit in all sorts of ensembles. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? What I have and always will avoid is low necklines. I feel it is very inappropriate and vulgar to show your cleavage. I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable with that.

How can yoga benefit us in Ramazan ? Yoga is totally in sync with Ramazan. The guided meditation and pranayama (yogic breath) is deeply calming and very spiritual in nature and the asanas (poses) help us find balance. All these factors automatically make yoga become a part of Ramazan as all these teach us the same things as fasting.

stay hydrated with ample water. Stay away from sugary drinks and food. Try to include bananas, oatmeal, honey, almonds and peanut butter. These are great in nutritional value.

What would be an ideal time for yoga in Ramazan? Personally, I add pranayama to my rituals right after morning prayers. Alternate nostril breath, humming bee breath and full yogic retention breath are amongst a few of the pranayama techniques that help me feel grounded and calm and gently fall back asleep after sehri. I find that doing a full yoga practice right before iftarr is a healthy addition to my day. It keeps me grounded, focused and toned as well. Some nutritional tips you’d like to share: Dates are the best natural source for energy, sugar, fibre and minerals and of course, it’s a sunnat to begin and end your fast with dates. Tanya Elahi Owner of Gymtonic

What is an ideal workout routine in Ramazan? Any training routine that’s shorter (30-45mins), and focuses on strength and muscle building. Your body is already in a state of stress and catabolism so HIIT isn’t the best and that too, everyday! What is the correct time for working out while fasting during Ramazan? Depending on goals, fasted training right before iftarr can boost growth hormones and burn fat. Sadly, it can also burn a lot of muscle and cause exhaustion due to water and electrolyte loss. Ideal time would be 2-3 hours after iftar. What is a good diet for those fasting and working out during Ramazan? Ketogenic diets are great for Ramazan, unless you’re a serious athlete! Keep carbs to a minimum, stay away from rice, sweets, dates and iftar buffets. (A lot of people actually gain weight in Ramazan because they eat so many carbs at iftar and sehri!). Hydration is vital and simply drinking water

won’t cut it. Ensure you have the right balance of sodium and potassium if you’re exercising. What are the two fitness and diet do’s and don’ts during Ramazan? Do: Replenish with fluids and electrolytes especially if training intensely. Ensure you are getting enough protein during your eight-hour eating window. Don’t: Continue to exercise if you’re feeling faint or low on energy. Blood sugar and pressure levels can drop rapidly, causing you to collapse. Don’t focus only on HITT workouts alone. They burn out the CNS (central nervous system) and are hard on the body.

HEALTH

THE NOTEPAD Amina Sibtain of Fitfibre jots the do’s and don’ts for a healthier Ramazan. From the most nutritious things to eat, to the things you should avoid, the health enthusiast shares it all

61

Keep your iftarr light and focus on hydrating your system with plenty of water. Drink at least two litres between iftarr and sehri. Drinking fluids is crucial for staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles.

Eliminate processed sugar foods and sugar resources from your diet - such as breakfast cereals, cheese, canned vegetables, bread, crisps, etc. Instead have some fresh summer fruits like watermelon, berries, falsas, apricots, plums and cherries.

Replace sodas and carbonated sugary drinks with drinks like lemonade sans sugar, iced tea, fruit juice mixed with sparkling water, coconut water, black or green tea. Or better yet, just mash fresh fruit and herbs in the bottom of a glass – and top with ice and water.

Add flavour to your food with fresh mint sauce instead of ketchup and mayonnaise. Other great healthy ways to add flavour are the use of salt-free seasoning blends, yoghurt, fresh herbs and spices.

Don’t eat heavy meals between sehri and iftar. Instead, have a bowl of soup, which will be filling and easy on your system. Salads, grilled or roasted fish or chicken with greens are also some light options.

Increase your fibre intake at sehri time especially. Fibre helps your body stay full longer and gives you energy throughout the day. Some high fibre foods include split peas, lentils, black beans, broccoli, whole-wheat pasta and oatmeal.

Fitness Revelations

Ramazan is a time for self-refl flection and turning one’s focus inward. It is also the time of year that training and eating right is likely to suffer if you are fasting, but it doesn’t have to. These celebrities share their Ramazan routine, which may inspire you to focus on some of the known benefi fits that come from fasting, and centre your training on those new goals.

Imran Khan Politician Ramazan is the best time to detox and strengthen the body’s endurance. To fully attain the benefits fi of fasting, it is absolutely important to exercise. For young people, a fit and healthy body reflflects a person disciplined and in control of him or herself. I get to exercise even more than usual. I workout for an hour before I open my fast and walk at least two miles before sehri. For sehrii I have plenty of yoghurt, fruits and eggs and iftarr is a normal meal.

Ayesha Omar Actress I do kind of watch what I eat regularly but sometimes I cheat. I love samosass and pakoras every once in a while but I do try to watch what I eat during Ramazan as much as I can. I like to break my fast with coconut water and some fruits and dates of course, followed by a healthy meal. I try and keep things light even at sehrii with fruits and proteins.

Shahzad Noor Model I do work out during Ramazan, yes. I usually sleep early but during Ramazan I stay up till sehrii and eat small meals. I watch what I eat, avoiding oily and fried food. To avoid dehydration I take a lot of fluids and yoghurt and that keeps me hydrated and energetic during the fasting period.

Mehreen Syed Model I keep it very simple in Ramazan. I don’t commit to any shoots. And I don’t workout in Ramazan either but I take long walks after sehri, read my Quran and then get some sleep. My sehrii is hefty which consists of a paratha, eggs and youghurt all through the month, which gives me energy all day long. I have a light iftarr but I have a proper meal of steak or fish with veggies. And ofcourse, to keep my skin refreshed I take a lot of fluids and juices.

JUNE 11-17 2017

62

Nadia Hussain Model and Beautician I do not workout in Ramazan, since I am a bit lazy during this month. I do watch what I eat, I will have cereals and fruits or shakes for sehrii and then for iftarr a bowl of fruit salad. I also take a lot of vitamins and supplements to make sure my body gets enough nutrients.

Khalid Malik Entertainer/RJ I do like to work out during Ramazan, generally it’s just before iftarr. My staple during Ramazan is primarily dates, so my iftarr would be fruits and dates and I also have a protein shake before I head out. For sehri, I like to have a strong cup of coffee. Carbs are very important because you need that energy to sustain yourself. Good fats such as sweet potatoes are very important. Aside from that you’ve got the butter and coffee, you can also go for yoghurt. Lastly I would say stay away from chicken if you can; beef is the way to go.

Ghanna Ali Actress I don’t normally workout during Ramazan but I do like to go for a brisk walk in the evening. I follow a strict diet plan because I have a tendency to put on weight so I am always on a diet. I think that God has made our body super flexible and adaptable so I don’t really have to do much to keep myself energized throughout the day.

Hina Butt Member Provincial Assembly/Designer I try to fast as much as I can in Ramazan. For sehrii I prefer having an egg white omelette, a piece of brown bread and a fruit smoothie. Sometimes I cheat with a cheese omelette and paratha a with sweet lassi. For iftarr I can’t resist pakorass and samosass and some fruit chaat. I also make sure I have a portion of protein, either grilled chicken or fish. I hit the gym around 10pm and do one hour of weight training. At night I prefer to have grilled Salmon and vegetables and relax in front of the tv.

Waleed Khalid Model My workout in Ramazan is slightly different from my usual routine. It is an intense workout of 45 minutes, which helps me to get sound sleep as its very important in my profession. Being a true Lahori I used to eat a lot but it has changed now, I completely avoid oily and salty food at sehrii and iftarii as well. I drink lot of water with lemon, which is also great to lose weight. I think Ramazan provides you the best opportunity to sustain a healthy diet.
