Her denim top is our favourite part of her look with its hanging ruffles that make the look extra fabulous. We also can’t stop adoring her elegant leather flats, chic sunnies and that fresh-faced glow, hitting all the right notes for a summer-ready look!

WITH RABIA FAROOQUI Creative Head at Nadia Farooqui by day, and artist by night, Rabia Farooqui gives us a glimpse of her long hours as she juggles between her work and family life 5am: It’s time to call it a night after hours of painting and a lot of contemplation. I usually drop in a quick hello to my father who is awake at this hour to start his day - a truly contrasting situation.

11am: I wake up with a strong urge to go back to sleep. However, I must start my day which is usually with a strong cup of mixed chaii and half an hour play time with my niece Rania. Breakfast is usually unpredictable for me - some days I go all out where I have egg and toast with a glass of orange juice. Other days, I usually just stick to whole-grain cereal.

12pm: I reach Nadia Farooqui’s workshop around this time to begin the creative process of putting my thoughts onto paper and in turn discussing them with the sampling team. A lot of sketching happens during this time which is essential to start the day with a bang! JUNE 18-24 2017

1pm:

9pm:

Colour swatches, sampling with the addaa department, fabric decisions are all underway with Nadia Farooqui and the team. By this time I need another cup of tea to keep my mind rolling.

I am now mentally preparing myself to get into ‘artist mode’. This usually means spending some time on my laptop doing field related research. Research helps me develop narratives which can then be depicted visually in my work. I begin to make compositions as a response, which helps me empty my creative system. I then take 20 minutes to make sense of the outcome and understand my visual vocabulary.

2pm: The workers now have their lunch break. I end up going to the Nadia Farooqui studio and cater to walk-in clients for about an hour and help Nadia with her bridal appointments if need be.

3pm: Yes, I should be having lunch but most of the time I forget or get lazy. The alternative is to always call for cheekooo shake from Agha Juice nearby; not only does it keep you energised but it tastes so so good!

4pm: It’s time to go home! I spend time with my grandparents and keep them company while they have their tea. Rania (my niece) keeps us entertained while we indulge in an evening snack usually in the garden if it’s not too warm. Some days my cousin’s kids join in for an evening swim so this time is usually unpredictable.

10pm: It’s time to start painting! Depending on the size of the painting, I’m either sitting on the floor and working or on a high chair-either way I take 15 minutes to make sure it’s a comfortable space by ensuring all my supplies/ materials are in their desired spot. Last but not least, I open my favourite playlist on Soundcloud and connect my speakers to my phone. Depending on my mood, I’m either listening to Coke Studio or deep house.

11pm: Painting away- the night is still young!

I now start getting ready to hit the gym. It’s a 15-minute drive to Health Act and another five minute walk up the stairs which proves to be a great way to warm up! It’s an intense cardio workout which lasts for about an hour after which I am famished and ready to have dinner.

I take a short break since my fingers are usually numb by this time. The next half hour is most likely spent talking to my friends over the phone after which it’s back to work!

730pm: The entire family gets together for a sit down dinner. This is the time when the family gets to catch up and get a lowdown on everyone’s day. 31

THE VAULT WITH KOHAR JEWEL The creative duo behind Kohar Jewel, Ahmed Shoaib and Danish Naveed share their success story and pieces that are extra special to them! How and when did you become interested in jewellery? Both of us have one major thing in common; we both have always looked for ways to express our creativity. Growing up around families that adored jewellery, we learnt to admire and appreciate jewellery design. We would accompany them to jewellers and propose our own ideas to make their designs better. Often, our ideas were not entertained for some technical reason or the other. Before we knew it, we were drawing and designing our own pieces and collaborating with local craftsmen. The appreciation that we received, motivated us to dive into this market professionally. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? Our favourite pieces of jewellery are classics that never go out of style. Personally, we really like our pear and diamond combinations. This combination goes well with both eastern and western attires. Where did you get them? We designed and created them alongside our karighars. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces. Our love for traditional pieces with modern twists got us working on our pearl maala. This will sound funny but believe us when we say that we went through a lot of history books exploring Mughal art, and watching tonnes of old classic Indian movies to get inspiration from the era. This was also a golden opportunity to hang out with the elder and younger ladies from and outside our family, including our favourite, Farah Talib Aziz, to discover what a timeless piece means to women from different backgrounds. We believe that understanding your audience helps you create what people want while staying true to your creative ways.

Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? Pieces from our first collection will always stay close to our heart as we designed them with a lot of love. It is true that all our pieces go through a rigorous process; from sketches, stone selection, to putting it all together and then spending hours with the karigharr takes patience and dedication. Many times we were discouraged, and staying focused through it all was rather challenging. After a few months of this, when we showcased our first collection, all the hard work truly paid off. That feeling plays a huge role in emotionally attaching us to our first collection. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get to in the future? Yes! We have big plans that we are very excited about. Currently, we are working on a line of jewels that are statement, stand-alone pieces. We will share these with you all very soon, so stay tuned for more!

THE CORNER WITH SAIRA SHAFI The talented Interior Design Consultant and CEO of En Vogue furniture, gives us a tour of her studio in the bustling shopping district of Karachi By Ibriz Sheikh

A

s we walk into one of the many furniture studios in Karachi’s Zamzama area, we are met by our charming host fi , who gives for the day, Saira Shafi us a warm welcome. Before we are given a tour of the showroom, we’re taken straight through into her cosy offi ffi ce space, where we sit on the most comfortable chair, upholstered to perfection. Shafi gives us a brief history of the family business which was founded over 30 years ago by her mother, Neelam Mawaz. “Through the years, we’ve managed to place Vogue as a major player in both the domestic and international market for luxury furnishings,” she says, adding: “Our classic pieces with a timeless appeal are true to our design aesthetic.” After a brief chat, we’re intrigued and ready to take a walk around the various corners of the space. There is so much that our attention is drawn towards, from the contrasting themes in each piece to the use of exotic woods, to the luxurious fabrics of the upholstery and the intricate hand carvings. But the piece that really

stands out is the classic jhoola; which Shafi says is a favourite among her clients. At first glance, it becomes apparent that a lot of thought has gone into each piece, and we wonder where Shafi and her team draw inspiration from. “Of course, we follow western and international trends, but we also stay true to our rich cultural heritage and age-old traditions,” she says, which is evident in the ethnic Dewan-e-Khaas collection which we are told is inspired by Mother Nature. The collection incorporates peacock emotifs and floral carvings and features mother of pearl inlays, hand painted wood and heirloom pieces. Solid colours dominate this range and the use of raw silks gives the collection that luxe feel. As we walk over to another corner, it feels as though we’ve walked onto the set of a European period drama. The furniture is perfectly placed on a lavish rug and hues of deep red and gold give the space a regal feel. The prominent use of silks, velvet and luxe fabrics are an ode to old world charm, and Shafi explains that this collection was aimed at “reproducing period furniture, while staying true to the company’s design aesthetic.” Shafi delves into the details of how important it is for a piece of furniture to make an impact to your home. She gives us quick tips on how different pieces can be mixed and matched to bring out the best of your furniture. To explain further, Shafi shows us the more contemporary range of furniture. The collection boasts a play of texture and material, comprising leather, simple lines and glossy finishes. As our time with our host comes to an end, we leave realising how much work and effort goes into producing furniture of such grandeur. We’re convinced that choosing the right pieces for your space is truly what makes a house a home.

Bannofie Pie

Sheer Khurma

Ingredients

Ingredients

225g digestive biscuits 120g butter, melted 1 tin of caramel 300ml double cream 3 ripe bananas, finely sliced

1 litre milk 4 tbs sugar 5-6 green cardamom seeds ¼ cup chopped pistachios ½ cup chopped coconut dried ½ cup chopped almond ¼ cup raisins ¼ cup chopped dried dates 1 hand full of vermicelli 1 tsp kewraa essence

Method 1. Crumble the biscuits into a blender and blitz until you have fine crumbs. Add the melted butter and pulse again to combine. 2. Spoon the mixture evenly between 8 individual fluted, loose-bottomed tart tins (9cm). Alternatively, make one big banoffee pie, using a 20cm fluted, loosebottomed tart tin. Press the mixture in firmly – you can use a teaspoon for this - and refrigerate for at least half an hour. 3. Spread the caramel over the base of the tarts not quite to the edges. Arrange a layer of bananas on top of the caramel. 4. Whip the cream until it has just reached soft peaks. Dollop onto the tarts to give a pillowy effect. 5. Remove the tarts from the tins. Poke one banana chip into the centre of each tart and scatter with chocolate shavings.

1. Wash the dry fruits and soak in a little milk for 3-4 hours. 2. In a pot add milk, sugar and ilaichii seeds and simmer on low heat until it starts to thicken. 3. Add the vermicelli and keep cooking till it softens. 4. Add the pre-soaked dry fruit and cook for 5 minutes and just before removing from heat add the kewraa essence. 5. Can be served hot or chilled.

Gulab Jamuns

Scrumptious Homemade Cookies

Ingredients For Sheera/Syrup 2 cups sugar 2 cups water Tiny pinch of orange colour or some strands of saffron 1/4 tsp powdered cardamon For Gulab Jamuns 1 cup nido or any good quality powdered milk 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 tsp semolina/ sooji 2 tbsp plain all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder Oil as needed

Ingredients 2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp kosher salt 2 sticks butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar 2 extra-large eggs 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Method For the Gulab Jamuns 1. Combine the milk powder, baking powder, semolina and flour together. 2. Add in the egg, then mix it gently to make a soft dough. Now make small balls out of the dough. This should make about 16 balls. If the dough feels sticky, touch a bit of oil with your fingertips and then form the balls. If the dough is too hard, add a few drops of milk and knead it in until you can form smooth balls. Make sure you fry the balls immediately so that they don’t dry out. 3. Heat oil on medium, add the gulab jamunss one at a time. Carefully, splash some of the oil over them gently. Lower the heat, if the oil is too hot they will burn from the outside and stay raw on the inside. So keep the oil really low whilst they fry, gently stirring the oil around them so they turn around and get evenly coloured. When they have doubled in size and are evenly browned all over, remove with a slotted spoon and put them directly into the sheeraa/syrup. Remember, the sheeraa should not be boiling hot, it should be kept on very low heat so that it’s just slightly warm. They will expand a bit more as they soak up the syrup. For the Syrup/Sheera 1. Heat all the ingredients together until the sugar dissolves, then give it a boil on low heat for about 3-5 minutes so it thickens slightly. Let it cool. This will make a bit extra sheeraa, you can store any excess in the fridge for your next batch of gulab jamuns. It keeps well. Source: Fauzia’s Kitchen Fun

Method 1. Preheat oven to 375°. 2. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and salt. 3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and both sugars until light and fluffy. Mix in eggs and vanilla. 4. Add flour mixture and mix until well combined. Stir in chocolate chips. 5. Eat a bunch of the cookie dough (kidding!). 6. Scoop what’s left of the cookie dough onto an ungreased baking sheet. 7. Bake cookies 8 to 12 minutes, depending on how gooey you want those centres to be. 8. Let cool 5 minutes, then transfer cookies to a wire rack.
