FASHION

Aymen Hikmat Aymen is totally rocking her mint green outfit! She wears trendy flared pants with a slit running down the centre which makes her Sophia Webster heels pop right out. We think she is right on trend with her look!

Hafsa Shayan Hafsa wears a chic kurta a buttoned down the front with a slit, and pairs it with straight cropped pants with a black fringe at the bottom! She carries a classic Chanel Maxi and wears lacey contrasting shoes. Very elegant!

Maheen Rehman Maheen goes for a sleek look with her hair tied in a high pony! She wears a subtle ivory based print with a touch of bright pink, which she matches her lipstick to. Her sleeves with the slit and airy culottes are a great way of keeping cool in the summer — She certainly glams things up with her accessories; a Gucci bag and Manolo heels!

Rushna Shahjahan Rushna’s lawn print is fun and vibrant so she sticks to the theme and wears hot pink accessories that work great with her look! She wears tassle earrings, a mini Chanel and statement pom pom heels. No other way to make your shalwar kameezz look this fun!

Shanzey Sheikh Shanzey’s look is so easy on the eyes! From the colours, to the light fabric to how it’s stitched — Everything screams summer! She teams her look with a mini Lady Dior bag and metallic shoes. However, it’s her fringed pants that really add the wow factor to her look!

WITH ADNAN MALIK K Which commercial did you have the most fun producing and why? I’d say it’s a tie between the world cup anthem I did with the Justin Bibi’s for Coca Cola and Cornetto’s short film, Love Is In The Air. The former because it was a spur of the moment idea I got after seeing their video online and it instantly became viral. It was amazing shooting a street music video in the old city of Lahore with its home-grown artists. The latter because Cornetto pretty much let me write and direct a short, coming of age film that I really believed in. It gave me the confidence to work with narrative and was a stepping-stone for me to direct a feature film! Who is your favourite Pakistani singer? That’s a tough call! Runa Laila was so melodious, and of course, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sahib b was mesmerising, as is Abida Parveen jee. Also Reshma – what a crooner! Out of all the characters that you have played, whom can you relate to the most? Sikander from Dil Banjaaraa — he’s basically me five years ago. He is a passionate visualist, a commitment phobe, and someone who loves adventure and travel. The first thing I did to prepare for his character was buy the cologne Acqua Di Gio, as that’s what I used to wear back in the day. I think it instantly took me back in time!

We play a game of quirky questio ons with one of Pakkistan’’s finest nesst aactors, ctors, a national natiional heartthrob and d a tallented director! Learn n more about his likess and his life — caution: this su uperstar also has an am mazing seense of humou ur, sure to leave you in n splits!

List three things you can’t travel without: 1) Well, strangely, ear plugs! I wear them on flights now to drown out the sounds of crying babies, as well as strange, unexpected soundscapes of new places. 2) A pair of sneakers, so that I can go for a hike or play a sport or just go adventuring wherever I am. 3) A book. Even if I don’t read it, I like having it on my bedside wherever I am!

Who is your favourite co-star? I’ve enjoyed working with all my co-stars. I have learnt different things from Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed and Mira Sethi. Mahira acts from the soul, Sanam has excellent craft and Mira, a very strong will. If you were stuck in an elevator with someone dead or alive, who would you want it to be and why? There are so many people to learn from, and getting stuck in an elevator with anyone of them would be amazing. At this point I would probably say a filmmaker like Martin Scorcese or an entrepreneur like Elon Musk! I would just ask questions and sponge all the information. What is the strangest thing you’ve eaten? I’ve eaten some strange things over the years! But I think it was when I visited a restaurant named Carnivore in Nairobi about a decade ago that I ate a whole variety of animals without really knowing what’s what! Had strange dreams that night… What is the best present you have ever received and from who? I think it has to be my cat Mila! I’ve always loved animals, but living in an apartment in Karachi and traveling a lot, I was always afraid of committing to keeping a pet. But a few years ago, one of my closest friends Munizeh Sanai, brought over this beautiful, kind, playful, puffball as a birthday present to me, and Mila has enriched my life ever since! Do you have any pet names? Adu, AduTheKadu, Smoother, Danu, Addie, Edner…everybody kind of makes one up as they get to know me. What is the weirdest dare you have ever accepted? I feel like acting in a role like Khalil in Sadqay Tumharee was a massive dare that I gave to myself! I don’t know what possessed me to do it, but it was scary and pretty much took over my life and emotions for a year! If you could have only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Sounds like torture! Actually, I do have the same breakfast almost everyday: a cottage (or other kind of) cheese, sausage and tomato omelette with bajray ki roti, homemade yoghurt and granola, fresh veggie juice, lemon water and an iced coffee. It’s such a solid start to the day! What is the longest you’ve gone without sleep? I’m super cranky if I don’t get sleep – to the point where I become dysfunctional. That being said, maybe 36 hours… Who was your first crush? My mother has saved a lot of my childhood drawings and writings, and recently gave me this love letter I wrote to this American girl Annette Martin when I was in the 2nd grade! Passionate little guy I was.

WITH PALWASHA YOUSUF

FASHION

The style-savvy fashion and hair stylist at Meher’s Salon breaks down her personal style for us. She shares the styling rules she always abides by and the styles she would avoid Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

JUNE 4-10 2017

46

How would you describe your body type? I would say my body type is a mesomorph — with a prominent bone structure and an athletic physique, it’s easy for me to lose and gain weight if I work on it. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Yes, that’s a natural process that happens to everybody. Some people are lucky and blessed with great genes to remain a certain size but I have felt the need to exercise in order to keep my body toned. How has your style changed over the years? As the world of fashion has evolved, everyone’s sense of style also changes with time. I would still stick to a classic and chic look. The simpler, the better! In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My legs! How do you dress your body according to your body type? In my opinion, I look better in a structured look rather than going with the frills and too much draping, keeping in mind that my shoulders are slightly broad. Too much cloth can make me look bigger than my size.

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Everyone has their own sense of style and you can’t take that away from them. But at the same time I do feel that people love to follow what’s trending, not keeping their body type or personality in mind. One has to go with a sense of comfort and ease when it comes to dressing up and I truly am a big believer of being comfortable in your skin rather than going with the trend. Another place where people go wrong here is being too loud with their hair and makeup. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? High-waisted pants suit my body type; they definitely make my legs look longer. A structured top always gives me an edgier look which I love and jumpsuits definitely suit my body type, with a pair of good heels, it automatically adds height to the look. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I definitely shy away from wearing figure-hugging dresses, it makes me very uncomfortable.

THE VAULT WITH MAHVASH SHEIKH

The creative designer and owner of the brand new handbag line, Mahvash, talks about the most treasurable bags in her collection! How and when did you become interested in handbags? As a child I was always complimented on my sense of style and I was obsessed with carrying my mother’s ‘grown up’ handbags. I realised pretty early on that a nice bag could spruce up even the plainest of outfits. This interest eventually turned into a passion and I was lucky enough to gain admission into the internationally recognised Cordwainer’s Accessory Design Programme at the London College of Fashion. Now, I’m finally at that nerve wrecking moment when an artist is about to launch their baby into the world! What are your favourite handbags? I have so many favourites! From my own label, the metallic bag with pearls is at the top of the list. It’s a unique yet elegant stand out piece! I’m also currently obsessing over the ‘J’adior Flap Bag’ by Dior. Is there any bag you are emotionally attached to and why? It’s got to be my first-ever hand made creation at university. It was an all-leather, lace-up shoulder bag. It took ages to make but once complete it was truly an exhilarating moment. It set the tone for the gruelling yet rewarding years at university ahead. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite bags: I would have to say my red Saint Laurent ‘High School Satchel’ is my favourite. I actually walked into the store looking for something else, but they took out this piece from the back and said it suited me more – it hadn’t even launched as yet! That piece was very close to my personal style, which also reflects in my debut collection. I love a clean, timeless look with edgy and youthful details. All these characteristics resonate with the Mahvash woman – ‘an abiding beauty’. I drew inspiration from spring/summer trends, which are seen in the floral and pearl accents that I have

used, radiating a feminine and quirky appeal to an otherwise classic, clean-cut handbag. I want my bags to be elegant yet also make an impact as there is nothing like it in the local market. Is there anything on your mind that you want to make in the future? I’m very unpredictable as a designer, so I want to experiment but right now I’m definitely thinking of doing something that is all black and futuristic. It feels very farfetched at the moment but it’s something I intend on playing with. And who knows, I may even branch out into other creative interests! JUNE 4-10 2017

WITH BUSHRA ABBAS AND ADEN REHAN

Bushra Abbas and Aden Rehan, head PR guru at Aden Rehan PR & Management Solutions, talk sisterhood. From going on school trips together as children to exploring California together as adults — these siblings share it all!

What is your first memory of each other? Bushra: When our mother and father brought her home. I remember her all wrapped up in a beautiful grey and white satin blanket. She had rosy pink cheeks and was the cutest baby that I have ever seen till date. In many ways, I first experienced motherhood with her. I remember holding her right after I came home from school the next day – those memories are very dear to me. Aden: When I was four years old and she was 13 years old, I went with her on her school trip to Mangla Dam. She was the only teenager who took their four-yearold sibling with them. She also included me in all the conversations and singing sessions with her friends. In my teenage years she was very blunt though! What is the craziest thing you have done together? Bushra: What haven’t we tried! Besides our childhood adventures, the summer of 2011 was the craziest time in our adulthood. From late night awara gardii to pulling all-nighters for soulful conversations,

we have done it all. We laughed so hard that our parents used to wake up in frenzy at 3am. I remember crossing roads with her as she held my hand and dragged me from one place to another because I had forgotten to navigate Lahore’s traffic on foot. However, the craziest time was our one-week holiday in California last fall. We had a blast! We had tons of places to explore and a whole lot of catching up to do. Aden: We took the stage at a bar in Vegas, danced on and sang the Barbie song! The audience was quite entertained. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Bushra: I was mostly punished for being sassy. I was too impetuous to hold my tongue. I did learn that art later on though. Aden: Once I drew monsters on her Physics notebook a night before her exam. It was my mistake but since I am the baby of the house, our mother punished her for putting the notebook within my reach instead of scolding me. I feel sorry for her now. JUNE 4-10 2017

JUNE 4-10 2017

Describe your sister in three words: Bushra: Fierce, fearless and free spirited. Aden: Strong, empathetic and beautiful inside out. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Bushra: Her sassiness reminds me of Junior B Jones. She’ll tell you whatever is on her mind for sure. Aden: She has a very ‘I can do it’ attitude in life. She can easily be a superwoman who multitasks fantastically. How are your personalities similar? Bushra: I think both of us are deep thinkers but very practical. Aden: We are both very easy to be with, we have a similar social behaviour. We adapt and get comfortable at different places with different people. We are both entertaining too!

If you could only wear one piece of clothing fo or the rest of your life, from the otherss closet, what would it be? Bushra: I would wearr her pyjamas.. She has such h a nice collection n of cute and comfortable pyjamas – I want to ste eal them all! Aden: He er pyjamas arre more comforta able than min ne. What is th he one thing yo ou love about your siste er? Bushra: I can’t say jusst one. I can’t live without my sister because… Bushra: It won’t be fun. Aden: I believe blood is thicker than water. Family always comes first. If you u are fightiing with each othe er, how do you ma ake up? Bush hra: I thin nk it’s my birth riight to be e mad at her, give her an ea arful and then talk to her as if nothiing happ pened. THE CORNER WITH LOCO

The three proud owners of one of Karachi’s most coveted eateries, Loco; give us a tour of the restaurant. They talk aesthetics and share with us their inspiration behind the innovative design By Ibriz Sheikh

T

here’s nothing Karachi loves more than a new eatery opening up in its already bustling food scene. But from the moment you walk into one of Karachi’s newest eateries, Loco, you know it’s going to be a truly unique experience. Owners of Loco, Talal Malik, Mohammed Raza and Rayyan Durrani, give us a tour of the restaurant located right in the heart of Karachi. As we walk in, attention is immediately drawn to the floor-to-ceiling art work by Naveen Shakil on a brick wall, which is the focal point of the small, cosy space. With only eight tables to seat diners, the restaurant instantly gives you a homely feel. “While travelling in the US we dined at Gracias Madre, which is where we drew inspiration from,” Malik tells us as we are warmly welcomed inside. Upbeat and energetic Latin American music instantly fills our ears and almost immediately we feel like we’ve been transported to a lively tapas bar in the heart of Spain. As a variety of aromas fill the space, we are distracted by the beautifully

JUNE 4-10 2017

72

tiled floor which appears to be inspired by 19th Century European architecture. “Majority of the interiors and décor are imported, save for the hanging ceiling lights,” Durrani says, cheerfully adding that “Even the tapas bowls are imported from Spain!” With Loco’s offerings of Neapolitan pizza to tapas, from Argentinian dishes to Mexican quesadillas, it’s only fair to eat from Spanish crockery! “We wanted it to be a fusion of Latin food from across the Spanishspeaking world,” Raza says of their inspiration behind the menu. The use of large mirrors around the restaurant is a prominent feature of Loco. Through one of the mirrors, we catch glimpse of a Frida Khalo portrait which adds heaps of character to that specific corner of the restaurant. The bold and vivid colour palette of the painting lifts the otherwise plain grey wall on which it hangs. With the space being a small one, each corner has been utilised by Studio Subtractive to utmost perfection. A wrought iron structure is built into the corner on which rest a variety of plants; adding a touch of greenery to the space. It appears that attention to detail is the forte of the three minds behind Loco, which is evident in the perfectly placed table mats and floral centre pieces. Customers begin to walk in hoping to get a table at the much-coveted restaurant which foodies have been raving about since its opening. Whether it’s the simplicity of the black blinds or the elaborate art work, Loco is more than just a restaurant. It’s visually appealing aesthetics and innovative design are among the many reasons we’ll be back again!

FOOD

Hirra Pervaiz, the brains behind Tickle Those Tastebuds, shares some of her favourite, easy to prepare recipes for Ramazan. Make some of these appetising dishes to make your iftar extra delicious!

Mint Margarita

Spicy Okra and Onion Stir fry

Ingredients

Ingredients

1/2 cup Sugar 1/2 cup Water 1/4 tsp Salt 3-4 sprigs of mint (or more) 3 lemons, juice 3-4 cups ice cubes 1 cup 7up lime or Sprite (250ml)

1/2 kg okra 2 large or 3 medium sliced onions 1 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp red chilli powder 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 3-4 chopped green chillies 3-4 tomatoes Ghee/oil

Method

Method 1. Add the sugar, water, salt, sprigs of mint, lemon juice and ice cubes to a blender. Pulse a few times till the ice is completely crushed. 2. Fill each glass half with 7up/Sprite and pour the mint mixture over till the glass is full. 3. Garnish the rim of the glass with a slice of lemon or with mint leaves. Serve immediately.

Tips Prepare the drink just before serving, or the crushed ice will melt if made way in advance. You can prepare the mint mixture in advance and add ice to it and blend before serving.

1. Wash, pat dry the okra (this step is very important: make sure okra is dried completely before you cut it as it’ll get slimy and mushy if it remains wet). 2. Cut both ends of the okra and then cut each pod into 1 pieces. 3. Heat ghee or oil in a wok/kadai, add chopped okra and fry it on medium-heat until it is tender and turns dark green in colour. Keep aside. 4. Use the same ghee/oil (add more if needed) add sliced onions and fry for about 5 minutes. 5. Now add salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes. Mix well and let cook for 3-4 minutes. 6. Now add the fried okra to it and green chilies. Mix well so that all spices are fully incorporated with the okra. 7. FITNESS/HEALTH

THE NOTEPAD Fitness instructor, Aniqah Sheikh, jots down six fitness foods and items that keep her in shape

Health Act- Cold pressed juices I love the Health Act’s cold pressed juices!! They are super fresh (and yummy) and full of all the nutrients and vitamins you need to give you that extra boost!

Resistance bands I use these in almost every workout! They make the easiest exercises super challenging, which makes my workout even more intense — all you need is your body and your bands!

Avocados My favourite fruit – avocados, (yes it’s a fruit)! They are the best because they are so versatile and taste so good! You can eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner or use them as part of a face or hair mask! They are loaded with nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants and have been shown to lower cholesterol levels too!

Jump Rope One of my favourites and also super fun! I love that you can literally do it anywhere (as long as you have some open space) — it is so good for your agility, hand-to-eye coordination and balance. And you can always keep learning new moves!

LuluLemon Athletics - Align Pant II I could live in these yoga pants! They are so so so comfortable and great to work out in! You feel so secure in them with all the freedom to move!

Nike Zoom Flyknits I love these running shoes! They fit like a glove — are super light and airy but still provide all the support you need!
