WITH JEHANZEB SALIM The head of operation n s a t the super-cool bus-tour com m pany, Su uper Savari Express, takes us along on n an adventurous daylong journ ney exploring Karachi like never b e f o r e . Here we discover iconic site es and hidden treasures around o u r incredible city
5am: Dreaming of where to drive the Super Savari Express (SSE) to next.
6am: Snoring away…wishing I didn’t have such an ear arly ar lyy wake-up call!
7am: I quickly run to the washroom to freshen up and drive to the SSE head quarters before our guests begin to arrive.
8am: Once everyone’s attendance is taken, and they’ve checked into Super Savari Express (yes we give them the Wi-Fi password), we have a quick introduction and get ready to roll. If sitting on a bus so pretty even a bride would envy it isn’t enough, we wake everyone up, and give them a chance to do it desi-movie style, at our morning run with the pigeons at Kabootar Chowk.
10am: Each step brings us closer to the anda parathaa and chai fresh out of a dhaabaa at an old Iranian restaurant in the heart of the city. But fifirst we make sure we season everyone’s nostrils and taste buds with the aroma of the spices at the nearby Empress Market!
9am:
11am:
We continue on a walking tour through the old streets of Saddar, camera’s are ready, capturing shots of the old buildings, shops and people, all in the eerie calm that comes over Karachi on an early Sunday morning.
With full stomach’s and happy faces we make our way towards Frere Hall to explore it’s vast expanses. We also drive by the former Flag Staff House, the Old Metropole Hotel, a number of religious sites, and then visit a number of MARCH 19-25 2017

1pm: Our final drive explores Karachi’s Truck Art Wall as we head towards PIDC for the paann that made the place famous. Once everyone has secured a classic meetha paan, we head towards our fifinal stop, the St Patrick’s Cathedral.
2pm: We bid our farewells, people exchange numbers, hugs and take pictures, but most importantly they take back a new found appreciation for their city, leaving with a new bond, or strengthening an old one.
3pm: I head to the offifice to get some organisational work done. It’s my favorite part of the day because our offifice is an explosion of colour as soon as you enter.
4pm: I get down to organising our tours for the week, get in touch with people from all walks of life to introduce Super Savari Express to them, and work on different projects to see how we can take the venture to new heights.
5pm: My team and I order lunch from a shawarma food stall across the street, for Rs80 it’s messy, but a fair deal.
7pm: I get home and have a nice long shower before taking the Super Savari Vespa out for a spin. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the cool evening breeze and help attract attention (not complaining).
8pm: I have dinner with my friends or family.
10pm: Now I’m off to bed…dreaming of where to take the Super Savari Express to next. 47

The beautiful cloth hes were accessorised with timeless jewellery from Amrapali Jewels. From delicate pink numbe ers to rich velvet silhouetttes, the collection saw an array of designs, and pro oved the design houses’ ranging dimension as an arrtist. The magnificent ba ackdrop, the heirloom-wortthy ensembles modelled on some of Rano’s mu uses, and the artistic way in which the show un nfolded, told a brilliant ta ale of art and culture. Acccording to the designer,, the collection is a culm mination of her career, ass it showcases her evo olution as an artist, who has worked hard and has a raw passion for dessigning. She feels that the women who walked the ramp symbolise indepen ndence, strength and ambition. They are women who stand their own grou und and walk their own patth, much like Rano herse elf.

WITH REMA TASEER AND MYRA QURESHI Rema Taseer, CEO of the jewellery brand, Rema and a partner, with her sister Myra Qureshi, at their skincare line, Conatural, spill all their secrets and talk about their adventurous childhood — whether it was rollerblading with the neighbours, or unleashing their dogs in cases of emergency, find fi out all of it here!
What is your first memory of each other? Myra: The day Rema was born. My mother thought that the best way to get me acquainted and get me to be appreciative of my little sister would be to tell me that she had brought me a present. So I was given a huge Pink Panther stuffed toy, which was as tall as me. I was pretty chuffed to say the least! Rema: I remember my first day at Kontiki. I was playing in the sandpit and was most upset about joining school. I practically cried the whole morning! But when Myra came to pick to me up I was thrilled. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Myra: There have been too many things, and they are not for public pleasure!
Rema: We have done too much! I can’t even begin to record it. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Myra: My immense love for animals! I love animals and I used to bring all sorts of stray kittens indoor. I remember when I was seven years old, there was a man beating up a donkey with a wooden stick outside our gate for no apparent reason. The donkey was crying out in pain, so I unleashed my two German Shepherds. The dogs obviously bit him and ripped his clothes apart. The news travelled to all my neighbours and I got into trouble with my parents, as “there are better ways to deal with these things”. Oops… Rema: I was very sporty as a child, so I was always screamed at for rollerblading with my neighbours. I MARCH 19-25 2017

remember my parents sat us down and told us that it is forbidden! I also loved playing adventurous games, where I would pretend to be a hunter. I used to climb the walls of my house or hop onto the terrace and jump into the neighbour’s portion…none of it went down well with my parents! If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Myra: Rema’s pyjamas. We both have super comfy pyjamas! Rema: Her track pants. If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Myra: I would buy a new phone protector and cover. Rema’s phone is a perpetual disaster! Rema: I’d use her cooking skills — she’s a very good cook! What is the one thing you love about your sister? Myra: She is extremely grounded and emotionally intelligent. She has a unique gravitas — a way of expressing things in the subtlest yet most powerful manner. Rema: She has the ability to listen, but she sticks by her guns. She can’t tolerate nonsense and lies, and deals with people in a very strategic yet assertive manner. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Myra: There’s never a need to ‘make up’. I just won’t talk to her for a day if I’m annoyed and then everything will be ok. Rema: We fight, and right after we speak to each other as if we never fought. We work together as well, so something or the other forces us to talk no matter how annoyed we are at one another. What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too? Myra: She looks good in everything she wears. You could give her something that wouldn’t suit anyone in the whole world, but she’ll rock it! Rema: She is very dedicated and is a go-getter. If she

sets her mind to something — it will be done. She has the fantastic ability to balance everything. Describe your sister in three words: Myra: Grounded, loving and goofy. Rema: Caring, well-balanced, loving. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Myra: Much like Pocahontas, Rema is a noble, beautiful, free-spirited and a highly spiritual young woman who loves adventure and nature. She has wisdom beyond her years, and offers kindness and guidance to all those around her. Rema: Myra reminds me of Mulan: strong, independent, brave, heroic and the hero of her story. She is extremely strong and courageous, but she is also loving and full of emotion. She always believes in doing the right thing! How are your personalities similar? Myra: We are very driven, honest and trustworthy. Rema: We believe in love and kindness. I can’t live without my sister because… Myra: We are bonded together under a pack code. We know one another’s faults, virtues, catastrophes, mortifications, triumphs, desires, and how long the other can go without food, water and the toilet! Rema: We are always by each other’s side. We share every moment together, whether it is in our work or personal lives.

T
his delicately embellished shirt is from Hajra Hayat’s collection titled ‘Fleur Enchantee’. The designer has used pure chiffon fabric, in a smoky-grey d colour and embellished it with pearls and crystals. The most unique element about this ensemble is that fine calligraphy has been done in between the motifs. If you take a closer look, you will see that the design incorporates letters from the beautiful language of Urdu.
WITH HAJRA HAYAT While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diff iff fferent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!
Myda Malik Lahore Head, TGIF Magazine
I chose to pair this lovely Hajra Hayat shirt with sharara pants for a flattering daytime look. I styled my outfit with traditional jhumkas, a silver clutch by Jimmy Choo, ‘Hangisi’ pumps by Manolo Blahnik and lastly, my wedding ring. I think my fun, voluminous blowout complemented the attire and the look I was aiming for. Overall, I’d say this makes an effortlessly chic outfit to wear to a daytime wedding.

Amina Niazi Managing Editor, Siddy Says
My personal style is minimal. I like to mix things up, for instance I’d wear a sherwanii with a skirt. This Hajra Hayat shirt felt like a kurta a when I tried it on, so I paired it with ripped boyfriend jeans. I finished the look with a gold and pearl teeka that I wore on one side to add to the unorthodox vibe of my outfit. I wore my ‘Layla Pom-Pom’ sandals by Sophia Webster to give my ensemble a quirky touch. My teeka and ring was by Hamna Amir who makes some seriously swanky jewellery. Since I have a bob haircut, I feel nothing looks better on me than messy waves. I would wear this outfit to a formal, pre-wedding or anniversary brunch.
Mishal Javed Owner, Makeup Shack by M
My personal style is very versatile. I like mixing and matching pieces together according to my mood! I styled Hajra Hayat’s bridal shirt with a plain net sharara as the shirt makes a statement on its own, and I didn’t want to take away from it. I belted the dupatta to add some oomph to the outfit. For my make-up I went for intense smoky eyes with mauve lipstick and some highlighter on my cheeks. For my hair I opted for big, beachy waves. I would wear this ensemble to a sangeett or to a mehndi.

VIDEOGRAPHY
THE NOTEPAD Muhammad Waheed, the owner and creative brains behind The Wedding Story Films, one of Karachi’s leading videography studios, jots down a list of essentials which create the perfect cinematic experience at wedding events Punctuality This is the most important thing! Whether it’s the make-up artist or event planner, push them to finish everything on time. Things are usually delayed for everyone else because of these two departments.
Plan for the planner Ask your event planner to plan the décor and lighting keeping videography and photography in mind — warm lighting usually works best. The most important area is the stage; so ask them to keep it well-lit and soft from every corner.
Attention Keep an announcement system at your events — it helps a lot! Be it an announcement for dinner, a gathering or whether you want your whole family together for a group photo — it always comes in handy.
Unplugged Let your guests know that you will have an unplugged event, and therefore please don’t use your mobile phones. It looks really bad on camera when people are on their phones instead of enjoying and mingling at the event.
No show Make sure the main talent of the company you hired for photography and videography will be present at your events. Generally, the team photographers are not able to achieve the desired results without the main lead.
Divide and conquer Companies are either good at photography or good at videography. Having been in the industry for several years I can safely say that it is very rare to find someone who is good at both, and I can almost guarantee that if you hire one person for two things then the end results will be compromised. Hiring two companies will get you better results as each team will be more focused on their specific task, and there is very little price difference too!
Picking sides Don’t hire two companies for the same purpose — it will be a mess! If someone hires The Wedding Story Films for their event coverage, then rest assure that we will cover both bridal parties, hence there is no need to get a videographer from the bride and groom’s side separately.
