THE VAULT WITH ZAINAB ISHAQUE The owner and creative head of the quirky accessories haven, The Art Geek, unlocks her vault to share some of her favourite contemporary and conventional jewellery pieces!

How and when did you get interested in jewellery? I’ve always been obsessed with jewellery! As a child, I was always drooling over my mother’s jewellery. She is a woman of exceptional taste and therefore has an exquisite collection. I used to flaunt her pieces whenever I got the chance. I think her love for jewellery was passed down to me. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? I am a fan of unconventional jewellery pieces. I love collecting pieces with a dramatic flair, but my most favourite piece has to be this pair of gorgeous kundan jhumkass with tiny pearl tassels. They are the only traditional accessories I own and I am head over heels in love with them! Where did you get them? They were my mothers and she passed them on to me. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? All the pieces I have created hold sentimental value to me. I have no professional degree in jewellery designing, so I feel that every design I work on has taught me something new about the craft. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of you favourite pieces: I wish there was a fascinating story behind the kundan jhumkas but there really isn’t. One day, I finally asked my mother if I could have them and she said yes. Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I would love to own a Gigi Mariani creation! His sculptural designs are both powerful and breathtaking. MARCH 26-APRIL 1 2017

Style Anatomy WITH SAHEEFA JABBAR KHATTAK

The young style-star and influencer at Nishat, reveals all her style secrets. Find out which silhouettes she tries to avoid and which ones she can’t get enough of! Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage MARCH 26-APRIL 1 2017

60

How would you describe your body type? I am lean, muscular and somewhat thin. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Recently, it has not changed much. I had gained weight when I was younger, but ever since then, my weight has remained constant.

for me to deal with denim in the hot weather. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? I wish my baby fat would go away, or perhaps I just need to control my sweet tooth.

How has your style changed over the years? It has always been very basic, and I have always loved wearing a lot of white!

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Overdoing things usually does not look good. If you are confused, it is best to keep your outfit basic and simple.

How do you dress your body according to your body type? I am not very picky. How I dress usually depends on what I am feeling comfortable in. In the summer I wear a lot of flared, cotton pants, as it is impossible

What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I don’t like wearing something that everybody has. So if it is a common trend or design, I try to steer away from it!

ONE PIECE, THREE WAYS

D

elphi’s latest est collection features embellished crochet pieces in a variety of hues. One of the pieces is a classic statement shrug which suits every body type and mood. The designer states: “Our lovely muses have done justice to it by ili showing the versatility of this shrug. They prove that this season, this piece will be a party favourite for our fashion-savvy clientele.”

WITH DELPHI While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diff iff fferent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Meinu Baigmohamed Event Planner, Grandeur Events While one’s personal style keeps evolving, I generally stick to a minimal-chic style that is timeless, fuss-free and has clean lines. I threw on this glamorous, versatile shrug on one-shoulder and wore it with classic black pants. I then accessorised with a gold, mesh Christian Louboutin clutch. This look is perfect for a fun Karachi evening!

MARCH 26-APRIL 1 2017

70

Jeannette Faruque a aruque Fitness and Wellness Expert, and Owner, Studio X I would describe my personal style as elegant, simple and feminine. I wore this beautiful Delphi sequenced shrug over my white, classic cocktail dress by Roberto Cavalli. Adding the shrug to my outfit gave it a glamorous touch. I accessorised with beautiful earrings and silver shoes by Aldo. For my hair, Mahvash Hasan Salon gave me voluminous curls. I would wear this outfit to a dinner or an outdoor party.

Mahin Hasib Clothes and Jewellery Designer With this Delphi shrug, I opted for an edgy-chic look by pairing it with my custom-made distressed jeans and Gianvito Rossi heels. When it comes to statement pieces, I believe in letting the piece do all the talking, which is exactly what I aimed to achieve here. Ensemble Salon did my hair and make-up, and I think it complemented my overall look perfectly. I would wear this beautiful shrug to a lunch, tea or dinner — it’s fantastic!

THE NOTEPAD Saeeda Mandviwalla, the CEO and Creative Artistic Director of Toni & Guy South Pakistan, jots down her favourite hair and make-up trends for Spring/Summer 2017

Swing faux bob with textured fringes The bob never goes out of fashion, but we’ll see a different version of the bob at Toni & Guy Karachi. The faux bob with textured fringes will be a street-style culture this summer. Rather than a classic cut, we will see softer layering and texturising throughout the haircut to enhance movement. This will give freedom with styling to suit curly, wavy or straight hair types. If lighter and darker blonde tones are incorporated in the cut, it will add to the fun vibe of the hairstyle.

Va-va volume Who said less is more? Forget flat, when it comes to star-quality hair, big is always beautiful. You can never go wrong with the classic voluminous blow-dry for special summer nights out. Do some backcombing with big brushes, and tease the ends of your hair out with tongs to achieve a flowing movement and glamorous curls.

Colour contouring Contouring and colour blushing is used to enhance or soften features around the face. So enhance your hairstyle, with detailed, freehand placement and techniques like ‘Micro-lights’. This gives a luminous, luxe look and feel to the hair. Translucent and bold hues in sheer blushes of rouge and gold will accentuate your hair perfectly.

Braided tops and textured movement A ‘Crown Braid’ or a ‘Halo Braid’ is a beautiful style that can be dressed up or down and be worn at any time of the day. This hair trend will be a hit in the humidity this summer. For a more casual look you can leave the back hair open with curls or for a more formal, evening look you can wear it as a complete ‘Crown Braid’. Both of which look equally chic and über-cool.

Waves and curls For Spring/Summer 2017 curls and waves are trending as they embrace and enhance femininity and subtleness. Trends come and go every year, but natural curls remain the most original hairstyle for anyone who can rock them. This hair trend is one of the most stylish looks, which anyone can achieve conveniently at home with the right styling products and tools. Liven up your waves and curls using freehand colouring techniques or with a textured haircut to get the ramp look this summer.

Man-bun Men, say goodbye to the short back and sides created using a sleek gel finish. This summer you will see warrior braids and plaits on short haircuts and textured man-buns even on an almost shaved back — depending on your preference. This summer all you men out there have the freedom too! MARCH 26-APRIL 1 2017

THE CORNER WITH MAHNAZ ADAMJEE The fashion designer and entrepreneur welcomes us in her vibrant corner — a conservatory, that provides her with peace and serves as inspiration in her professional life By Alyzeh Alam

nterestingly enough, Mahnaz Adamjee’s favourite space, instantly catches our eye as soon as we enter her tasteful home. Her beautiful conservatory is bounded by four glass walls and overlooks the large, lush garden outside her home. She regards it as her “little sanctuary”, which is also the reason why the space makes it to her list of favourites. “What I love about it is how it’s detached from the house. This gives me a sense of privacy whenever I spend time here,” says Adamjee. The view of her garden is simply spectacular, and the serene sight brings with it a sense of tranquillity and peacefulness. As we begin our conversation with Adamjee, we learn that nature is the first and foremost entity that soothes her. Therefore it comes as no surprise, when she tells us that she likes to spend most of her time in this conservatory, indulging in a good book, drinking tea, practicing yoga or spending time with her friends. “If any of my family members were to look for me, they would have absolutely no trouble finding me in here,” she claims.

Adamjee’s home is approximately 40 years old, and naturally the conservatory has undergone various changes over time. Originally it was not an enclosed space, and had no boundaries, and although she was initially against her mother’s idea of enclosing it, she is now extremely grateful to her mother for going ahead with her decision. We look around the corner, to evaluate the contemporary yet traditional furniture the space is decorated with. The beige leather chairs with black, metal, cut-out details and matching black candle stands, give the area a modern touch. “Having lived in London for many years, most of my furniture is brought from there or inspired by designs I have seen there,” Adamjee shares while explaining her contemporary aesthetic. The tapestry and the main dining table are specific examples of pieces, Adamjee has brought from London. However, a vintage swing that belonged to Adamjee’s grandmother is actually her favourite piece in this corner. She tells us that it has been in the family for numerous years, and claims it is perfect for brief power naps. When asked how this area is mostly used, Adamjee answers: “Perhaps the most beneficial use of this corner is when I use it for my profession,” she continues, “the serenity not only allows my mind to work freely and imaginatively, but also the

bright hues found in the numerous flowers in the garden serve as inspiration for the colour palette I use in my clothes.” The conservatory is an ideal place for Adamjee to spend most of her time, also because of her love for nature and the outdoors. “I am able to spend all 12 months of the year inside this conservatory as I adore every season Karachi has to offer,” she smiles. As we begin to wrap up and leave, Adamjee stresses on her mother’s imperative role in the conservatory; from deciding to enclose it, to maintaining the garden and selecting most of the furniture. “Without my mother, this place would either not exist or not be half as beautiful as it is now,” she concludes.
