FEATURE
We’ve all had our fair share of heart breaks. Sometimes when relationships end we question and doubt our decision to leave the person behind despite all the issues, red flags and deal breakers. We feel we won’t be able to move on or find someone who will love us with all our flaws and shortcomings. We have all heard stories about toxic relationships. So many tales of passionate, insatiable, intense, heart-breaking affairs, and infallibly, the first thought that came to me used to be “why does this person keep holding on to this (clearly) damaging situation?” I must confess a part of me judged. How someone could withstand so much heartache and pain and still be willing to keep trying with the same person over and over again? It is always difficult to leave an extremely toxic relationship and the only way you can decide to end the cycle of abuse and control is by seeing the person for who and what they are, not for the potential they have. Loving them harder will never change them. The only thing that will change them is when they acknowledge their mistakes and are willing to fix them and that is usually not the case, no matter how badly you want it to be. If you’re confused and want to know for certain if the person who you think is the love of your life is actually toxic (trust me, deep down inside we all know who is toxic for us) read below and take the necessary steps. You can never fully be yourself around them. Being with a toxic person is like “walking on eggshells”. You can’t share certain things because you are afraid of how they’d react if you’d talk to them about something they wouldn’t like. You have to filter out details about any interaction with another person because you are afraid to completely be open and honest with them because chances are they’d take it in a completely twisted way. They make you question your self-worth. Deep down inside you know you deserve better and the way they taunt you or mock you or take subtle digs at you and later label it as ‘joking’ is not okay. They don’t see you as their partner and aren’t willing to fix whatever issues you have. There is no healthy communication. You don’t feel heard or are always blamed for issues that arise because of them. They always see you as their enemy and not their partner. They twist and distort facts and make you question your sanity. Toxic people lack empathy. They might not be able to comprehend the hurt and pain their words or actions cause. They often try to isolate you and you are left with no support system and are entirely dependent on them for emotional and mental peace. They put unexpected burden on you by making you their source of happiness. They expect you to always be available for them but your own emotional needs are neglected. They are extremely insecure and cannot see you growing and becoming a better version of yourself. They always run away from confrontation or become defensive. They never acknowledge their mistakes. They make you question your reality by distorting facts or changing narratives. They taunt you or mock you

to break your self-confidence. 14. You don’t even recognise your new self and often wonder how you ended up in that situation. 15. Whenever you try to walk away they pull you back in either by emotionally blackmailing or playing mind games. Always make sure to confide in a trusted loved one and try documenting the mental and emotional abuse you go through. Once you’re fully immersed in a toxic relationship you not only lose your identity but also your self-worth, confidence and sanity. It takes a lot of ups and downs before you find the courage to let go but once you do, the healing begins. Healing is never linear and there will be good days and bad days. Healing can be lonely and messy where you have to face your inner demons but once recovered from all the damage caused and once you fully heal you will feel liberated. Taking the required steps to heal i.e overcoming your fears, building yourself back up can take a lot from you but the end result is beautiful. Think of it as a caterpillar finally becoming a butterfly.

What is your idea of style? Elegance. What brings out your creativity? I love what vacations and exposure to different cultures can do. It not only gives your mind a break but refreshes it and makes it think from a whole new perspective be it cuts, colours or motifs. What was the precise moment when you really decided that designing was your forte? I had heard of PIFD and studying fashion really intrigued me. Once I started studying design I knew I had made the right decision. Do you think fashion has become too commercial and taken fun away from it? Fashion is for people, I believe there should always be a good balance between creativity and wearability. At this point in your career, do you seek validation from your clients, fashion critics or other successful designers? Not at all. My designs are products of my mind and are my babies though I am definitely happier when my vision clicks with that of my clientele.

Social media plays a significant role in promoting campaigns, isn’t it time designers found new ways to promote campaigns and heritage? Social media is quite strong and is a way of very personalised and relaxed marketing, it reaches masses and homes like no other medium can. I am all for it as long as it’s serving the purpose. How do you strike a balance between creative expression and commercial viability? I try and make sure that whatever new ideas are pouring in, get translated keeping in mind the personalities, frames and values of our women. Do seasons really matter anymore in the world of fashion? They should. Are you ever envious of another designer’s success? Never. Together we all make this industry, everyone has their own place. Have you failed at anything? So many times. Do you
ever learn without failing? My failures have made me a better person I feel. What are the three signs of beauty for you in a woman? Kindness, empathy and compassion. Physical beauty is no beauty unless you’re kind from within. What are the few childhood memories that shaped you? I think memories of visits to my parents’ hometown up north have really stuck with me. Those were happy and simple times that our village didn’t even have the basic facilities but still seeing the people so self sufficient, easy going and content is probably what kept me in my place.
Any lesson that success has taught you? I know happiness is from within, I believe that, but success in your career does give you happiness too. It’s quite underrated in quotes at times. What do you fear? Loss of my loved ones. Your favourite sound? The sound of my kids’ laughter and the rustling of leaves during monsoon. Three things no one knows about you? 1. I grew up in Karachi. 2. I’m a Pathan and fluent in Pashto. 3. I always eat dessert before my meal. I know, embarrassing.
