LIFE STYLE

Fauzia Zafar

Fauzia Zafar is the master of all trades, from being the head of influencer marketing at Pakistan’s largest E-commerce company, to being a full-time blogger and a mother of a new born baby girl, she speaks to T.Edit about her actively growing blog, “Rants Of A Desi Bride”. How did you come up with the idea of your blog? There were no wedding blogs back then and I thought an Instagram account would be a fun way to document my wedding journey. Honestly, I did not expect to get the kind of attention and appreciation it got! How do you manage to run an actively growing blog as well as a full-time corporate job? Since my job takes almost all of my time, I unfortunately am unable to post stuff on my blog as often as I’d like. However when I feel very strongly about something, I always make time to write and share it with my followers right away. For other usual content, it basically just needs a little bit of planning and scheduling on my end so I dedicate my weekends for all the blog work. What is the biggest misconception about blogging? That blogging is just taking pretty pictures and uploading them on a public profile or that it is an easy way of getting free stuff and passes to events. You need to put in effort to create quality content. There are so many exceptional bloggers in the country who schedule their entire day around their content - taking pictures in the right light, brainstorming and coming up with fantastic MARCH 29-APRIL 4 2020

ways to integrate brands while staying true to the aesthetic of their blog. You need to analyse your engagement rate, your followers, your total interactions - just having a million followers doesn’t count for anything if your total relevant engagement is 2% (I’ll stop because I can hear myself getting technical). What has been the most challenging project you have worked on so far? I collaborated with a couple of bloggers to create awareness about mental health and connect people with mental health experts. The kind of messages I received and the sort of information people trusted me with blew my mind. The pressure and responsibility that came with this project truly made it challenging but at the same time also turned out to be one of my favourites as it made me m feel like I was using this platform for something good and really important. Describe a typical day in your life? he No two days are usually ever the same but these days a typical day almost always include waking up and having a 10 minute chat with my husband about random things, cuddling with my baby girl, checking my work mail, reading and responding to messages from my followers and watching a short episode of a random show on Netflix. Define your signature style? As casual as Pj’s all day. o What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers? Please don’t consider blogging an easy ff or way out - a way to get free stuff ork that make quick money. It is hard work requires a lot of patience. Don’tt run after ork on the number of followers but work ork for getting loyal followers. Don’t work free and at the same time don’tt ask ’t have for too much money if you don’t and the results to justify it. Understand the responsibility that comes with a wer public space - you have the power to influence so use it for good and avoid being bad and ugly.

27

MARCH 29-APRIL 4 2020

How do you unwind after a stressful day or week? Games night with friends, catching up on sleep while someone volunteers to babysit, cooking (if i can muster the strength lol!), watching a good show or just a conversation with my siblings or husband. Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My husband. He is the kindest person I know, extremely honest and dedicated to whatever he puts his mind to whether it’s his job or his relationships. He’s also one of those very rare people in the world who are not afraid to accept their mistakes and flaws and then consciously fix them. Three skills to possess for running a successful blog? Disc Discipline to stay persistent, st staying true to your personal s style and always being kind and humble are all vital for running a successful blog. Three things you always c carry in your bag? Wallet, keys and a neutral lipstick. You’re now a mom to a new born w baby, what are the challenges and lessons you’re learning from this new ph phase of life? Being a mom is definitely the most reward yet the hardest thing I’ve rewarding ever do done in my life. It’s weird how your pe perspective on life changes when you are responsible for more than yo just yourself. You really learn how it feels to truly love unconditionally and how p pure and helpless babies are. I’ve als also developed a great deal of brand new respect for all the parents, especi especially mothers in the world. I’ve e been exposed to a whole new world a also sharing my learnings and I am b little on my blog! little by What next for Rants Of A Desi What’s Bride? I’ve ne never really planned anything, the blog and content is usually wh whatever is on my mind at the tim However what I can time. p promise are lot of honest, relatable conversations straight from the heart!

FITNESS

Fitness First With

Anam Rafiq Godil

Anam Rafiq, a certified barre instructor speaks to us about her journey as a fitness instructor. Read below as she explains in depth all about barre fitness, her own fitness philosophy, how she joined the fitness industry and more.

How would you describe your fitness philosophy? I believe that a successful workout routine is one that fits you and your lifestyle, and finds you moving your body in a way that makes you happy. Forcing yourself into a workout is a very bad idea, it’s a life style choice, it should be about balance, and it should be fully enjoyed and certainly should not be taken as a chore. So my philosophy is that don’t look at an exercise as a punishment or a chore, it should be an essential part of your day that makes you feel the best and gets you moving.

in What inspired you to join the fitness industry industry? I have always been physically act active. I love trying different ty types of workouts, although I a always thought something was m missing in my workouts. My main reason for turning into a barre instructor was when I gained weight after my baby. It just wasn’t coming down a it was frustrating, making and m me jump from one boot camp t another. One day I randomly to s star started doing this workout on Yo YouTu YouTube, it said barre, it was very differen from the normal routine different workout For the first time, that day workouts. actuall thought that my body has I actually done something really challenging. Since that day I’ve been doing barre every single day, sticking to a healthy balanced diet and including barre in my workout routine really helped me lose all the weight that I had gained. Not only did it change me physically but I also saw a significant change in mental health; it made me calmer and more relaxed. There are only a few barre instructors in Karachi and I wanted to help women especially those who struggle with postpartum depression, weight gain, insomnia through barre and that’s how I became a barre instructor.

What exactly is barre fitness? Barre is a hybrid workout that is inspired by ballet with techniques of pilates, dance and yoga. It focuses on low-impact, high intensity movements designed to strengthen and tone your body in ways that few other workouts can. Barre involves inch movements which makes a difference that most of the workoutss cannot. I mber when always remember uctor a barre instructor n inch says ‘down an ally lly pulse’ it literally ch ch. means an inch. A basic 60 minutes barre class comprises a nice warm up to begin with then focuses on the upper body, after ody that lower body at the barre, taking e mat for it down to the di with ith the core and ending the most relaxing cool down. Every barre instructor has their own way of teaching it but I try to make my classes fun by adding new props and cardio every week. MARCH 29-APRIL 4 2020

Three things in your diet you can’t go a day without? Definitely tea, I literally need three cups. However it’s not that good for your internal health but we all have our cravings. Dates, especially before my workouts as it really gives me energy. Apart from these two I enjoy banana smoothies, walnuts, oatmeal and milk. What is your typical day like? I have a kid so apart from my workout classes I spend each and every minute with him. I wake up spend time with him, I make a mind map of how I’ll go about in that day’s class which is in the afternoon. In the evening we take our dog for a walk and after that I take my second workout session in the evening. Night time is for family and in between I still practice a lot for my class choreography. I love to keep my degrees up to date so I just keep studying for any additional courses at night when my son sleeps. What is the most effective workout? I believe b ve that every workout is effective effecti ve onl only if you are willing to give your 1 100%, be punctual and staying motivated. It’s a lifelong com commitment . Obviously ba barre is really effective b but again your 100% commitment is required. When I say “ an inch down or an inch up pulse” I literally mean it and that is what will make a big change to your body so small is isomeric moves are ke e to get good and long key last sti results. lasting Advic vice ce you’d yo Advice give to people lo looking to a attain a healthier life style?? According to me, moderation and balance is key to a healthy lifestyle. Avoid following the latest fads blindly instead adopt a balanced diet with good carbs from fruits and vegetables, add nuts to

your diet. Working out at least five times a week or starting thrice a week. Get at least good eight hours of sleep at night. Also I think binge eating at night is really unhealthy. What are some misconceptions/ questions asked by your clients? I get a lot of questions regarding weight loss especially “if I work out all week will I become really skinny in a month” yes you can see a big difference only if you eat a balance diet along with your workout routine because if you want to go down on the scale you need to eat a healthy and balanced diet since your diet impacts more than your workout. Your favourite food to eat on a cheat day? Gluco biscuits with tea, very basic but very yummy. How is your fitness mantra different from others? Everyone has their own ways and style to instruct a certain workout programme. I believe in small and isometric movements which can actually make a big difference to your body with long lasting results. I tell my clients to take it slow and then I add challenges to the workout. I plan out my workout according to the group so, before taking of people I teach. Also, ays ask if they’ve any new client I always d while wh ever had any sort of injury and g on I always lways the workout is going ions. I give them modifications. love adding props to my ek workouts. Every week I’ll introduce a new prop and the entire class will be based on that. Lastly my barre classes are never the same. Every single barre class is different from the previous one even if we work on the same muscle group.

Which celebrity would you like to train and why? I would love to train Jacqueline Fernandez as she loves barre workouts. Her body is really flexible so adding barre challenges would be fun with her. Something you enjoy doing when you’re not working out? I love taking the weekends off so on weekends I don’t work. Weekends are for my family and I make the most out of it by spending time and going out with them which I enjoy a lot. A quote or saying that keeps you going? “The best hour of the day begins at the barre”. When it comes to eating healthy what are your top recommendations? Eating a healthy diet is not about strict limitations or starving yourself with food you love. It’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health and boosting your mood. The cornerstone of a healthy diet should be to replace processed food with real food. Eating food that is as close as possible to the way nature made it can make a big difference to the way you think, look and feel.

5 Ways to boost your

immune system

to fight

Coronavirus

Our immune system is a complex model of cells and system, each with their own role that work towards protecting us from illnesses - of any sort. The state of your body plays a vital role in determining if you’re more prone to get affected by an infection or a life threatening virus like Corona. Your physical, mental and emotional health all play a key role in keeping you strong and healthy. One of the many ways we can keep ourselves and others around us safe (during this global pandemic) is by being cautious and taking good care of our immune system.

Below are a few ways to boost your immune system 1. An antioxidant-rich diet

While Vitamin C is a popular choice when it comes to fighting off cold and viruses, antioxidants in general play a huge role in strengthening our immune system. They help in developing white blood cells and help destroy death cells which are key to destroying harmful bacteria. Antioxidants also help in repairing damaged DNA and boosting the body’s ability to repair itself. Food is the best possible source of antioxidants, so add some of the following to your shopping list: berries, dark chocolate, artichoke, coffee, kidney beans, green tea, apples, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables and oily fish.

2. Garlic This one in especially popular in South Asian households where garlic is popularly known and used to fight off cold, flu or any immunity dysfunction. The active compound found in garlic, allicin, has antibacterial properties that can help to prevent illness and infection. The benefits are ultimately in its antiinflammatory properties, which help to keep the immune system working at its best.

3. A good night’s sleep The benefits of restful and rejuvenating sleep are endless. For now let’s focus on its impact on the immune system. Research shows that ample sleep and a balanced body and brain’s sleep/wake cycle will improve the production of anti-inflammatory cells and killer cells, improving the body’s ability to fight off infections.

4. Movement A study by the Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise journal has shown that regular brisk walking increases the circulation of white blood cells. The main purpose of these immune cells is to kill any sickness-causing pathogens. The same benefits can be harnessed with regular weight (resistance) training too, which increases the heart rate and the body temperature (another factor that contributes to killing bacteria). This study, however, also came with a caveat: any exercise done for 75 minutes or longer at a high intensity causes a spike in hormones, which can compromise the immune system. So, a balance of low and high intensity is key – and if you’re starting to feel under the weather, don’t go all out, but do keep moving.

5. Cut down on alcohol and cigarettes

Smoking harms the immune system and can make the body less successful at fighting disease. This increases the risk for several immune and autoimmune disorders (conditions caused when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s healthy cells and tissues). If you break down the ingredients in alcohol, you’re essentially looking at pure sugar. When consumed in excess, sugar and/or alcohol are major culprits in reducing the body’s ability to produce white blood cells, which means you’re more likely to succumb to viruses and bugs. In the longer term, alcohol can seriously compromise immune cell function, making your body more susceptible to disease. Source: Vogue.co.uk
