FASHION

Style Anatomy WITH

SARAH LALANI

The style-savvy fashion stylist, Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of The Connoisseurs PK, Sarah Lalani, breaks down her personal style for us. She shares the styling rules she always abides by and the biggest fashion faux pas anyone can make while dressing up and so much more Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage MARCH 3-9 2019

24

How would you describe your body type? I’d say I’m curvy. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Of course! I’ve changed head to toe and nothing has been the way it used to be. As I’m stepping into my 30’s my body is changing in every way. This reminds me of my ability to conquer the greatest of avenues with wisdom and experience. I feels sexy and confident. How has your style changed over the years? I don’t think it has changed much. It’s just the outer form i.e. the clothes that keep changing from year to year. My style has always been this – I’ll wear anything I want to and I will be very happy about it regardless of how anyone sees it. After all, style is how you carry your outfit and not the outfit in itself, right? In your opinion, what is the most troublesome area of your body? My cute, round belly. It accentuates even more in my high waist pants. Sometimes, I look pregnant and that’s okay. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I really don’t believe in this very notion in the first place. This is something we at TCPK

25

MARCH 3-9 2019

also strongly discourage. I suggest all fashion schools should jettison the dress-according-toyour-body-type theories by now. Wear whatever you like and rock it as Ashley Graham does. This is 2019! In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing? Wear something they secretly want to wear and yet feel conscious about it or fail to walk out confidently due to anyone’s opinions but theirs. Everything else is a person’s personal choice and not a mistake. They know what they are doing and so I will not choose to be their fashion police in any way. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? High-waist and long flared pants, undoubtedly. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I think I can wear anything I like from swimsuits to saris. The question here arises about what I choose to wear with a given company and what to show on social media. I can’t remember the last time I wanted to wear something in a given circumstance and shied away and didn’t do that.

LIFESTYLE

WITH YASIR HUSSAIN

We play a round of rapid fire with one of Pakistan’s finest actors, Yasir Hussain. Find out what he thinks is the best part of being famous, the hardest role he has ever played and his goals for this year!

MARCH 3-9 2019

28

What is the best part of being famous? You get so much love and appreciation, everywhere, all the time. What was the hardest role you’ve ever played? Aangan Terha was a theatre play for which I played the role of Akbar, seven years ago. It was also portrayed by the late Saleem Nasir on television prior to that. What is your goal for this year? I am hoping to get married this year, I am also hoping to do a good film project that could be Aangan Terha, and a theatre play Naach Na Jaanay. What is the most rebellious thing you did as a teenager? I got a lot of piercings done, I had long hair, and I wore brown shoes to school where only black ones were allowed. Have you ever used your celebrity status to get something? Gohar and I were once driving in Lahore and he was not wearing a seat belt so a traffic police officer stopped us. I introduced us and that got us out of a ticket! What do you spend a lot of money on? Mostly on my family, my girlfriend and my dog! Other than them, hats and glasses. How did you get into acting? I don’t know what to really say, I have always been passionate about acting. Since I was a child I had a goal in mind, I worked towards it and the rest is history! I auditioned all over the place. PTV, Indus, theatre! Theatre gave me my first chance. Which character have you enjoyed playing the most so far? I played Moti in Karachi say Lahore and Lahore say Agay I definitely enjoyed playing this character the most so far. If you were not an actor, what would you be? I also wanted to be a doctor, so probably that. What has been your most rewarding project? I would say the films I’ve starred in, Karachi say Lahore and Lahore say Agay. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Wajahat Rauf for these. How would you describe your work journey in one line? It’s difficult to describe it in one line; I can probably write a whole book about my work journey.

29

MARCH 3-9 2019

k by Have you been star struck anybody? Yes, I heard Sri Devi’s voice over the phone, and I absolutely lost it. I was given the chance to have a conversation with her but I was not able to. What is one fashion trend that you don’t understand? High-necks. What new projects are you working on? I am working on Naach Na Jaanay, a theatre play by Daawar Mehmood and Anwar Maqsood. There’s a film I can’t give away too much about and a film for Aangan Terha is also in the works.

FASHION

WITH OMOROSE

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designer’s collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

T

his mint green embellished cape by Omorose exudes elegance with its delicate pearl details and sequin tassels. The cape is versatile enough to be dressed up or down with pants, saris and even jumpsuits. The subtle hue and delicate bling makes it perfect for both day and night events.

MARCH 3-9 2019

38

Mehek Saeed Stylist and Writer I paired this beautiful pistachio green cape with this equally gorgeous sari by Omorose. I normally don’t do top heavy looks because of my body type but this cape was too pretty to resist. I paired the outfit with Soma khussas because I like saris with flats especially when the length is such.

39

MARCH 3-9 2019

Mehek Rizvi Editor, GT Magazine I paired this gorgeous cape with a plain jumpsuit in the same colour. The traditional embellishments on this statement piece are juxtaposed with a western cut to add a unique spin to the design. I teamed the look with minimal accessories, with just a pair of earrings to break the monotony of one solid colour.

MARCH 3-9 2019

40

Zainab Raza Model Keeping everything pastel, I dressed myself up in one of Omorose’s classic crop top and boot cut pants, with this embellished cape being my favourite. I kept my hair and make-up very natural and neat to compliment the whole look and completed it by styling it with a statement ear piece and a very chic gold belt.

FOOD

Table Talk with

Hoagies

Hoagies is the ultimate stop to get scrumptious made-to-order comfort food in an uplifting, understated ambiance! From deliciously toasted sandwiches, whole wheat flat breads and loaded sides to amazing salads and tacos, Hoagies is sure to leave you spoilt for choices! We got in touch with the man behind the unconventional eatery, Zain Ansar to talk about his opinion on the city’s food revolution, his struggles and strategies as well as the most rewarding aspect of running an eatry in Lahore

MARCH 3-9 2019

42

Is Lahore experiencing a food revolution? Lahore is most definitely in the midst of a food revolution! Travelling across the globe and social media forums have provided Lahori customers with a lot of exposure in terms of food. The consumers are now more willing to experiment and try out different types of cuisines. Take Japanese restaurants as an example, these were once limited to hotels with limited clientele, and have now become part of the mainstream restaurant circuit. What sets Hoagies apart from competitors? Hoagies came to Lahore with a revolutionary take on what quick dining should be. We wanted to provide something that was great tasting as well as super fresh. Our sandwiches are made with fresh bread baked in-house daily, even our sauces are made in-house. It’s fresh, wholesome comfort food with the least amount of preservatives. What made you venture into the fast food business? I had been exploring various food related options to invest in but finding a product that spoke to me was challenging. When I came across Hoagies I felt that it was phenomenal and we

43

MARCH 3-9 2019

really don’t have anything like it in Lahore! What are the greatest challenges a restaurateur faces in Lahore? The challenges faced by us are probably very similar to those faced by restaurateurs around the globe. We are constantly searching for suppliers that can provide us with the best and freshest ingredients to use in our food. Also managing human resource and maintaining service standards requires consistent attention.

big trends in the market right now. Investors are increasingly privy towards food related businesses and are looking at international trends to mimic back home. One aspect of the restaurant you find rewarding? The instant feedback is amazing, if the customers like the product or generally a good day at the restaurant is quite rewarding.

One thing on the Hoagies menu everyone must try? Our tacos are extremely popular and our Philly Cheesesteak sandwich has reigned as a best seller. What explains how affordable Hoagies is? Customer feedback and repeated clientele are the best indicators of affordability. All in all we haven’t had customers complaining about our price range. All items in our menu are within the Rs1000 bracket and considering the taste and quality of our products, it is great value for money! How do you keep your work force motivated? Young people like those in our service team tend to feed off the vibe and energy of the place. We like to keep things orderly yet friendly. Also happy customers play a huge role in motivating those that serve them. Any new innovations coming to the Hoagies menu? We’ll be launching rice bowls and burgers on our menu very soon. What trends do you forecast in the food and beverages industry? Increasing competition and food innovation are MARCH 3-9 2019

BEAUTY

The

Beauty Edit

with Kamran Qureshi Jazzibiyat – Aesthetics Redefined

In recent years, people have become more accepting of cosmetic procedures in Pakistan due to various beauty fads set by several celebrities and social media. Chiselled facial features, fuller lips along with a healthier appearance of the skin and body have become more desirable among men and women. Certified in aesthetic medicine, Dr Kamran Qureshi of Jazzibiyat – Aesthetics Redefined, talks to us about ways of preventing premature ageing and the most popular cosmetic procedures being offered at the clinic

What is your area of expertise? My area of expertise is Aesthetic Medicine and anti–ageing. I am certified from some of the best institutes and trained by some of the best in this field, internationally. When I chose this field, I went to France for a diploma in Facial Anatomy. Though aesthetic medicine includes both surgical and nonsurgical procedures I work with non – surgical and minimally invasive procedures to improve cosmetic appearance whether it is the face or the whole body. What are the challenges that come with your job? I believe that all challenges are opportunities. The biggest challenge is that clients want miracles and obviously that does not happen right away. The other problem is that a lot of clients come at a stage where it becomes more difficult and costlier. I am working these days to educate people on looking after themselves MARCH 3-9 2019

46

at an early stage in life. That does not necessarily mean getting procedures done but establishing a skincare regime at an early age can help one age gracefully. What is the most gratifying part about your job? The smile on a client’s face is highly gratifying. Though aesthetic medicine procedures are elective, I assure you that they can significantly improve quality of life, psychological wellbeing and social engagement and when you are able to help your client achieve all of that, the sense of achievement is something out of this world. What is your greatest professional and personal strength? I believe in team work. If I can’t help my client I refer them to someone who can. The other thing is that I am very thorough in taking the medical history of the patient. You may be amazed to know that we have been able to help so many people suffering from other diseases and getting them to the right doctor. My biggest strength would be to actually make proper time for my patients/clients. I listen to what they want and evaluate what we can do to help them achieve their goal. I don’t believe in rushing things as it never leads to anything good. What are you most passionate about? Aesthetic medicine is my passion. I go for two to three international refresher courses each year to learn new innovations and brush up my skills. For the knowledge of the readers, I have a post-graduation in clinical research from University of Surrey UK and in Health Economics and Policy Making from London School of Economics. I am one of the very few health economists in the country and I am involved in research and implementation of a value-based healthcare system. What are some of the most popular treatments that you are offering? Our vampire facial (PRP) is very popular. Hair removal, non–surgical face lift (HIFU, radio frequency or threads),

47

MARCH 3-9 2019

microdermabrasion, mesotherapy, botox, fillers, body sculpturing, face contouring, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, liposuction, and hair transplants are also some popular treatments. What treatments/facials do you think are necessary to prevent premature ageing? Microdermabrasion, mesotherapy, hydra-facial, PRP are all safe procedures with minimal downtime and good results. Baby – botox is also a good option for not letting the lines appear. HIFU and Radio Frequency based non – surgical face lift helps a lot in taking years off you without jeopardising your expressions. How is Jazzibiyat – Aesthetics Redefined different from other cosmetology clinics? Best technology, professionalism coupled with a hint of love and affection is what makes us stand out from the rest. It is one of the few clinics where the whole staff is qualified and professional. All our nursing staff are registered nurses working under the guidance of trained and certified doctors. We have a relaxed sterile environment for our clients. Our biggest strength is client satisfaction and retention. Do you think there is a downside to getting frequent cosmetic procedures? I believe not. It entirely depends on what age you start getting them and is it needed for you in the first place or not. I think if you start looking after yourself at an earlier age through skin care and exercise, the need for procedures lessens. Is the ratio between male and female patients the same or is there a significant difference? Female clients are higher but there is a definite increase in male clients in the recent past. Male clients come for hair transplant and laser hair removal mostly. Laser hair removal is becoming popular among gym lovers who want to appreciate their hard work by seeing the muscle cuts. Waxing and shaving are not only cumbersome but also damaging for the skin.
