With Mahgul Lawn

FASHION

The most awaited lawn of the season — Mahgul Lawn 2017 is out for grabs and it sure is fabulous! This week we pick out our favourite prints, and choose which fashionistas styled it to utmost perfection

Ayesha Noon Ayesha is understated in her monochrome kameezz and pants — The printed green dupatta a really accentuates the dynamics of her entire look. She accessorises with a black bag and some cool fringed sandals. We love her effortless-chic style!

Farwa Farwa’s look is as easy breezy as it gets! She wears a bright floral sleeveless kameez with white flared pants. She cleverly stitches her silk dupatta a to her kameezz so it’s draped across as loose ruffles.

MAY 14-20 2017

32

Mahgul Rashid Mahgul is right on trend with the short length of her kameez and airy flared pants. We love how she wears her dupatta a like a scarf around her neck! All eyes on those strappy buckled shoes — Such a fun, easy and practical look!

33

MAY 14-20 2017

Selina Rashid Selina wears a classic boxy kurta a over her floral cropped pants — The colour combination and print of her lawn outfit is a breath of fresh air and one of our favourite prints from the collection! She goes with all black accessories keeping it fuss free.

Attiya Noon Attiya’s outfit has a neutral base, so the pop of orange and green in the border and dupatta a really makes it stand out! The kimono style sleeves work really well with her flared pants. She tops off her look with matching orange and black heels — very elegant!

LIFESTYLE

WITH FARAZ KHAN The multi-talented entrepreneur and CEO of SEED Venture es gives us a om taking his glimpse of his life. Fro daughter to school to o handling startups, he does it all.

5am: Wake up, rub my eyes, stare at thee ceiling and then head to the loo. I stand on my terrace, listening to the birds and looking at the city – we have a nicce view and a beautiful terrace that looks like it is part of a villa in Umbria.

6am: I watch my daughter sleeping blisssfully for five minutes and then wake her up softly. I love the way she looks at me when she wakes up – her smile tells mee she is genuinely happy to see me.

7am: I switch on the television while my wife gets our daughter ready for school. Once she is readdy, I take her to school

8am: This is the part of the day where crazy hasn’t begun yet. These are calm, uninterrupted mom ments I spend with my wife. We have breakfast together; I have a boiled egg with cottage cheese and a cup of green tea.

9am: I get to the offifice. Greet Lala at thee door, and then walk in. Jeean or Iqbal (our offifice peons) greet me and pre-empt what I need: one tall glass of waterr and a cup of tea (black with no milk). I begin checking my emails. This is my alone time. I talk to no one, smile at no one and plan my day. Almost always, the day is packed with meetings!

MAY 14-20 2017

36

4pm: The strategic hour! I say straategic because we reserve this slot to meet the members on o the Board of our ventures. It’s overwhelming to see the am mount of vision and brilliance they have when they get togetheer for a meeting, and they ask the right questions, ones thaat force me to reflect and review organisational direction.

6pm: We say goodbye and shakee hands – sounds like I am done right? Far from it! The SEEDD team get their chance to meet me now. I try to retain my smile as we talk, discuss, converse and plan for the next day.

7pm: We have a table tennis setuup in the basement. It’s a good thing we have this, because it creeates a chance for physical activity, not just for me but for the staff s too. They love their jobs but they hate their paunches – courtesy their desk jobs.

10am:

8pm:

Crazy officially begins. Meetings, conference calls, Skype calls, flustered colleagues, colleagues asking for cigarettes or just peeking in to say hello – it all starts to roll in. Then Khusro Ansari, my partner and comrade, walks in and I think to myself, ok, we’ve got this.

Homeward bound. I must have dinner with my family; which is why I disapprove of business dinners. It’s the only time I get to see my father, my wife, my daughter, my brothers and my nephew in one place. That’s the great thing about food, it brings people together; and if there is daal chawal, kebabs and watermelon, well then life is beautiful.

1pm: I cannot bear to sit in my chair anymore, I must move, but first lunch. Jeean brings in my soup; sometimes clear chicken, sometimes mulligatawny with salad. Ideally I would like to switch off but I think about what’s next on my to-do list. I check my phone; I have tonnes of unchecked Whatsapp messages. Personally, I don’t like Whatsapp, too much is said and very little is understood.

10pm: My wife, Beenish, and I love watching movies and TV series. New, old, you name it. We aren’t even looking for a star cast – it’s the story that counts. While we watch, my wife nibbles on the world’s unhealthiest goodies. How she manages to remain stick thin is beyond my understanding.

3am: 2pm: This time is dedicated to the start-ups SEED has invested in. If you ask me what we looked for when putting our money in ventures – commercial potential is important, but more often we are looking for people who look like they can handle the heat. We’ve been right, we’ve been wrong and we’ve learnt that, without tenacity, businesses can neither be created nor can they survive. I’m not the sort to micro-manage, but I do understand that owners look at me for a sense of direction and need to connect with me to revive their creative energy. I spend the next two to three hours meeting with the CEOs of each venture. There are debates, healthy arguments, coffee and lots of laughter. 37

A memory from your pregnancy you’d share with your child: I had a complicated pregnancy and I still remember that it was my 11th week and I was terrifi fied. My husband was with me and I kept looking at him scared to the core and when the doctor said she is now going to listen to the heartbeat my heart stopped. The moment I heard her heartbeat I had tears streaming down my face, it was like I was alive again, and her heartbeat was music to my ears. She was, is, and always will be my miracle. A secret you’d share with your child only on Mother’s Day: That she has my unconditional support no matter what and sometimes parents forget to mention that in their daily routines when they’re chastising their kid and trying to set rules and boundaries for them. I want her to know all of this and not let it be an unspoken assumption. I want her to know I’m finitely her number one fan and the world is her oyster. It’s not a secret but defi something she needs to know every Mother’s Day, after all I wouldn’t be a mother if she wasn’t there.

How would you describe your body type? I would describe my body type as petite.

skinny jeans. When wearing them, I have the option of going for either a casual or a slightly trendy look.

Has your body type changed over the last five years? From the time I started university, I had been carrying around my ‘freshman 15’ weight, until just over a year ago. However, over the last year I made an effort to become fit by making exercise part of my lifestyle, which in turn has helped me to become lean and toned. How has your style changed over the years? Considering I was living in Montreal for four years, where the weather was extremely cold or chilly for majority of the year, I felt restricted and demotivated when it came to dressing. However, after moving back to Karachi, my style has changed. From wearing boots, oversized sweatshirts and scarves I am now more simple and chic, and prefer a clean look. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? Over the years, I have grown to accept my body the way it is, while focusing on exercising to make myself stronger. How do you dress your body according to your body type? Since I am lean, I enjoy wearing ripped or

57

MAY 14-20 2017

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I believe that fashion is a form of art and allows for creativity enabling one to have a unique identity. The biggest mistake anyone can make while dressing up is not being authentic to that means of expression. I think it is essential for people to dress according to what they love and feel most comfortable in. When you follow that motto, confidence comes naturally. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Silhouettes that are neither too loose nor too fitted. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I don’t necessarily shy away from any particular clothing, however, my fashion pet peeves are feeling too tight in my outfit and wearing materials that can be sharp on my skin. I physically need to feel comfortable in everything that I wear.

THE VAULT WITH ZAHEEN KAMRAN

Former fashion student, jewellery designer for Mor Mahal and owner of the eponymous jewellery brand, talks to us about her designs and inspirations

How and when did you become interested in jewellery? I have always loved metal smiting, and the concept of making something miniature yet valuable with your hands is just mesmerising. It was in my foundation year at Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD) when I decided to pursue jewellery designing. What are your favourite pieces from your collection? I won’t be doing justice to my work if I name one piece as my favourite. There are a number of pieces, which are close to my heart and mind. From our latest collection the ‘Ball Braid Choker’ is the piece I admire the most. It’s a blend of art and simplicity. Is there any piece that you are emotionally attached to and why? I designed and manufactured the jewellery collection for a TV project titled Mor Mahal by Sarmad Khoosat. Each one of those pieces is close to my heart. Designing each piece according to the characteristics of a particular character and then getting it manufactured, the experience made me emotionally attached to each and every piece. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces: This is the story of how the ‘Ball Braid Choker’ came into being. I was working on my ‘Chasing Tray’, in which we embed the design on a metal sheet using hammering and chasing tools. The old school braid was stuck in my mind and I started moving my tools that way on the sheet. The result was amazing, so I picked the ‘Chased Dooms’ and arranged them besides the braid. Then I soldered the pieces, bended it and the ‘Ball Braid Choker’ was created. Is there anything on your radar that you want to make in the future? There are a lot of things that I want to achieve.

First is the revival of our local craftsmanship. We are working with NGO’s and are looking to provide opportunities to the labourers in remote areas of Pakistan. I am also working on some big projects with renowned names in the fashion and film industry. There is a lot more we have lined up which you will get to know about really soon! MAY 14-20 2017

ONE PIECE, THREE WAYS

T

p his wrap from Farah d Talib Aziz’s Eid collection is an easy piece to style. Dress it up or down, pair it with minimal or statement accessories d and you’re good to go for any occasion!

WITH FARAH TALIB AZIZ

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diff iff fferent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Aniqah Sheikh Fitness Instructor, Health Act

I styled this Farah Talib Aziz wrap with white skinny pants and teamed it with gold heels and a miniature Rema bag. I kept my hair casual and tousled, with soft make-up and a glossy lip. To complete the look I had my nails painted white. I would wear this look to a brunch.

Nida Shahbazker Partner, Impact

I chose to pair comfort with fashion! I wore denim capris as I wanted to keep all the attention on my top. I styled my outfit in a very versatile way — so it was balanced enough to be worn from lunch all the way to dinner! I matched my Gucci clutch and high heels, added a statement ring paired with pearl earrings which completed the look for me!

Aminah Tariq Owner of Amo and The City

This trendy wrap by FTA is perfect to be worn to a semi-formal dinner or even on Eid. I paired this mustard wrap with black flared pants and wore a black tank underneath to make the colour pop out more! I felt that the top was detailed enough so I went for minimal make-up and accessories, topped off with a bouncy blowdry.

ainab Shaukat’s latest creation is home to Lahore’s famous eatery, Bamboo Union. She takes us through the inspiration behind its design and some of her favourite areas as we take a tour of the restaurant located right in the heart of Lahore. As we walk in, attention is immediately drawn to the hanging bamboo structure and light fittings, which are the focal point of the restaurant. “The name Bamboo Union inspired me to add a touch of bamboo. I made a structure out of bamboo and hung it from the ceiling,” Shaukat tells us as we enter. The textured walls, together with the lightwood seating make for a calm and collected ambience. Inspiration was drawn from the British-headquartered Asian chain, Wagamama, which is evident in the benched seating and minimal décor. “Since this was going to be an eatery serving pan-Asian food, I followed the lines of Wagamama. keep the place minimal rather than cramped with décor,” says Shaukat when asked about her inspiration behind the design. As is the case with many of Shaukat’s projects, the use of natural-coloured wood is prominent throughout the eatery. The whitepolished wood used under the counter gives the place a unique feel, while the single grey wall gives the restaurant character and breaks the monotony of the wood. “I really wanted to add white somewhere, and since no one had really done white polished wood with visible grains in Lahore, I went ahead,” she says, adding that “white also gives the feel of openness, in whatever way it is used.” Shaukat’s use of white with a concrete-like texture not only makes the space look bigger but also gives it a sense of openness. As we move on to the live kitchen on the ground floor, food sizzles and the chefs are hard at work. It is precisely this aspect that makes the eatery one like no other. “Basically the ground floor is my favourite. As it has the live kitchen, you get to see the fire flaming and the chefs in action with your food,” she says. We walk over to the first floor and immediately notice how bright the area is. The design enables sunlight to enter through the beautifully panelled windows and offers a pretty view while you eat your meal. Just as we have a hard time deciding what our favourite part of the restaurant is, Shaukat too says she doesn’t think it an easy feat. “Since I designed the entire thing I seem to be in love with it altogether,” she says laughingly. Shaukat’s design aesthetic for Bamboo Union is minimal yet modern. The minimal approach gives you room to breathe while all the interior accents effortlessly complement each other.
