Unforgettable looks of the week!

THE CUT

FASHION

Fatima Bader Fatima styles her all black look to perfection with a hint of monochrome stripes! She ties her hair up to allow the off-shoulder top to do all the talking. She pairs it with black culottes and nude heels. We think this is the perfect dinner look!

Muzna Sultan Muzna takes away all our blues with her all-blue look! She teams her trendy cotton top with ripped, pearl embellished jeans and tops it off with patent nude heels. This ensemble is a great way to beat the heat!

Marjan Khizer Marjan keeps it casual chic in her white cropped breezy top and embellished jeans. She accessorises her easy and simple outfit with statement earrings and glittery silver flats, which definitely take her look up a notch!

33

MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

Sara Wassan All white everything is the way to go! Sara wears frayed cropped jeans with a white cotton bell sleeved top. She completes her look by adding a pop of colour with her sea green N21 flats. We think this look is a summer hit!

Marium Ahmad Marium is right on trend in her extremely ruffled sleeved aqua top. The off-shoulder element makes it just right to be paired with a choker — She really switches it up by adding more colour with her red and black heels. What’s not to love about this look?!

WITH ZARMINA FAISAL Yogi Zarmina Faisal takes us through her rejuvenating day. Learn all the health and skin care tips you need from the expert herself!

5am Sleeping…

8am First alarm – snooze! At 8:30am the second alarm rings – snooze again.

9am I wake up and start my morning routine. I spend about 10 minutes oil pulling daily, and then continue with my normal routine – brush/fl /floss, a bit of skin care, make my hair /fl presentable usually in a braid etc. I drink warm water with a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar and lots of water after.

9:30am I prep my studio for my upcoming class, and do a few stretches to start warming up.

10am Time for my morning yoga class!

11am The class ends and the students leave. I stay for a while longer, doing my own personal practice and finish off with a nice, long meditation to start my day on a good note. MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

36

8pm I take a shower and then eat dinner with my husband. Stir-fry vegetables cooked in coconut oil makes for the perfect meal.

9pm Wind down and read a book – I’m currently reading Women Who Run With The Wolves, which was recommended to me by my best friend.

10pm I watch an episode or a movie with my husband. He’s vetoed Gilmore Girls, so there’s usually an argument about what to watch at this time.

11pm I do my skin care routine. I put on a volcanic mud mask that leaves my skin feeling yummy, and put oil in my hair and leave it overnight since I don’t have my morning class the next day. After I wash the mask off, I put Vitamin-C essence on my face and top it off with apricot oil.

12am Lights out.

12noon I take a body shower and eat my first meal. It’s usually a big glass of vegetable juice and depending on how intense my class has been, some eggs cooked in coconut oil. I then have my cup of tea, which is an essential.

1pm I head into a meeting for an upcoming project that involves a college drive across Karachi. Here I talk to girls about beauty, skin and hair care, fitness and health.

2pm I’m still at the meeting!

3pm I get back home and have another cup of tea with a platter of fruit, and put on an episode of Gilmore Girls — my pet cat usually accompanies me.

5pm I go to a nearby park for a quick jog.

6pm I start prepping for my evening yoga class, which starts at 6:30pm.

7pm I’m in class. Usually the students stay back for another 10 to 15 minutes after class to ask questions or discuss something. 37

THE VAULT WITH MEHREEN TABANI

The talented owner and jeweller behind Allure by MHT, speaks to us about the exquisite jewellery inside her vault

How and when did you become interested in jewellery? I have always been inclined towards picking and wearing unique pieces of jewellery, however my current profession was quite unplanned. I knew of a karigharr who went out of business when the gold prices hiked about four years ago. He was my go-to person for statement pendants set in alloy. My friends were often fascinated by the unique pieces of jewellery I would wear, and on their insistence, I finally started my business. I have never looked back since and of course, God has been very kind. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? My absolute favourite is a pair of earrings set in rose-cut, American diamonds that we created for our formal collection last year. And of course, a diamond solitaire ring which is a gift from my husband is also my favourite. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? My sapphire and diamond ring is of great value to me, as it was an 18th birthday present from my parents. Another piece I’m very close to is a vintage, gold necklace, which is more than a 100 years old. That piece is a family heirloom, passed down from my great grandmother to my grandmother, to my mother and finally, to me. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces: My diamond and emerald earrings have been a little tough to acquire, as I had to request someone to get the emeralds from Zambia and set the earrings in India! It was quite a task.

Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I have my eye and heart set on a vintage emerald ring that I recently saw at the jewellers. It is from the pre-partition era. So let’s see… MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY WITH NIMRAH AND NISHA GHUMRO

The sister duo behind peacelovefashionkarachi reminisce about their childhood antics. From making prank calls, to their spontaneous travel adventures, these siblings have been through it all

What’s your first memory of each other? Nimrah: Pure joy and ecstasy. I was super excited to learn I had a baby sister to play with. I was totally obsessed with her. Nisha: I just remember being glued to her all the time since the very beginning. Wanting to dress like her, wanting to do the same things as her, basically I remember being her minion haha. What’ t’s the craziest i t th thiing you have done togeth ther?? Nimrah: We have done many crazy things together (better left unsaid) but the strangest, weirdest and craziest thing was when we prank called our father as revenge for telling us off (we were kids, okay, teenagers lol). Nisha: One crazy memory that specifically stands out is when we were both at university in London and randomly decided to pick up our back packs and hop on the first train that took us out of London with no prior travel plans or hotel booking, and even no

permission from the parents. Needless to say, that trip turned out to be one hell of an adventure. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Nimrah: Nothing really, I was a pretty perfect child. Nisha: I was extremely sporty as a child and would always end up breaking windows while playing cricket or breaking my mother’s favourite decoration pieces whilst attempting to play basketball indoors. However, my siister always l had d my back k and d would ld actuall lly get me out of being punished for causing such damages. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Nimrah: Nisha has an amazing collection of Missoni tops; I’d take them all. Nisha: I love my sister’s entire wardrobe but recently, I managed to sneak out one of her maternity t-shirts and it’s so comfortable, I could literally live in that t-shirt forever! MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

50

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Nimrah: Go back to London and do my Ph.D. Nisha: Hand over all my shoes to my sister, hehe. What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Nimrah: The bond that we share. We have grown up being very close to each other and I love how loving, compassionate and caring my sister is. Nisha: She is always there for me, no matter what. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Nimrah: She says sorry, I just sit and wait. Nisha: We rarely ever get into fights but I am always the first one to say sorry, even when it’s not my fault, somehow that’s just how it’s always been. What is the one secret talent that your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Nimrah: It’s not a secret talent, but my sister is a phenomenal dancer. I wish I could dance like that. Nish ha:: She knows all ll the latest t t mak ke-up hacks k and tricks and is really good at contouring and highlighting. I always turn to her to help me “bake my face” and give me other make-up tips. Wish I had that kind of skill and knowledge about all the latest products out there and how to use them correctly.

51

MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

Describe your sibling in the three words: Nimrah: Protective, genuine and a free spirit. Nisha: Responsible, caring and generous. Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Nimrah: Rachel Green from Friends. Nisha: Daenerys Targaryen (Khaleesi) from The Game of Thrones! Just as magnificent. How are your personalities similar? Nimrah: Ni h We are pretty siimil ilar. Growing i up so cllose to one another influenced our personalities too. We are still referred to as twins even though we have an age gap of a year and a half. We barely disagree, which is probably one of the biggest reasons why we never really fought as kids. Nisha: We both have very strong morals and almost always have the same opinions and viewpoints on matters. In fact, I think we have almost identical minds and are borderline telepathic, haha. I can’t live without my sister because….. Nimrah: Ni h: I can’t ’t live with ithoutt my siistter because she h is my sanity. I can’t make a decision without running it by her first. The bond I share with her is the most special bond I have formed with anyone in my life. She completes me. Nisha: Because she is my OXYGEN! Love her more than anything or anyone, sorry Mum and Dad! Xoxo.

Molecular Biologist,, Aga Khan Lahore I really love wearing suits. I feel the structure a suit gives you is very flattering for lots of different body types. I normally wear very sober colours but when I put this on I felt vibrant and adventurous. It’s imporrtant to try something different and move outt of your comfort zone. Because the print and colours of the suit are very powerful and stro ong, I didn’t accessorise at all and also kept my ma ake-up very light.

MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

Stylist I thought Sara’s summer suit was a reallly fun piece. Instead of just pairing it with jeans I thought it would be fun to do a resort inspired look, so I paired it with a vintage maxi and bejeweled slip ppers. I kept my hair fuss-free with som me beach waves and accessorised with be eaded bracelets and cocktail rings.

INTERIORS

THE CORNER

WITH SAEEDA MANDVIWALLA

The CEO and Creative Artistic Director of TONI&GUY South Pakistan, gives us a tour of her state-of-the-art f lagship salon– a true haven tucked away on a bustling street in Karachi By Maha Rizvi

T

ONI&GUY South Pakistan’s flagship salon is a quiet sanctuary, which resides on an energetic Karachi street. Pristine white walls, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a lush green landscape and a serene fishpond greet us as we walk inside the gate. The tranquil atmosphere makes us feel calm, which is imperative to truly enjoy a salon experience. Our charming host, Saeeda Mandviwalla, welcomes us in and makes us comfortable in her state-of-the-art salon. The space is minimalistic and Zen; the architecture primarily focuses on clean, modern lines while the interiors are tastefully done using contemporary, monochromatic furniture and the walls adorned with beautiful artwork are seen in various parts of the salon. Mandviwalla tells us that the international design team at Toni&Guy London and herself were behind the interior design. “Our interiors have to look somewhat the same all over the world. However ours is truly unique. We have spared no expense on the interiors and the exteriors, which give a skyline effect. I think the high-quality

MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

72

experience, consistency and care that you get at TONI&GUY can truly transport you,” says Mandviwalla. While it was essential for Mandviwalla to follow set guidelines given by TONI&GUY, she took it a step further and created a world-class salon space, which is regarded as the largest TONI&GUY salon in the world. She shares: “We have been called ‘mini Harrods’ by the press and the results have only gotten better over the last 10 years.” But Mandviwalla’s favourite space is not just a remarkable attraction; she also has some extremely special memories in this corner. “When I opened the salon this was where my family and friends came to wish me luck. I remember having coffee with them and admiring the art in the salon,” she recalls. She also tells us that the area, which she loves the most in this space, is her art corner and desk. “It gives me the freedom to see and hear all my clients at the salon and it is also where some of my favourite pieces reside – that being my paintings. I actually wanted to be an artist but I chose my profession through a career guidance book with my eyes closed,” she laughs. The salon is also home to some sentimental pieces such as the Venetian mask and porcelain doll, which have been given to Mandviwalla by her mother. We examine the exotic mask and doll on display, which artfully rests on a display stand, noticing how fabulously it adds colour and character to the salon space. The salon has the perfect balance of modernism and charm and we are quick to ask Mandviwalla where her inspiration came from. She answers: “The inspiration came from looking at my walls and making sure that when one looks at the walls, it feels calm and soothing. Hence, I have placed different artworks which in turn makes the space resemble a mini gallery.” Mandviwalla’s workspace provides the same comfort that a home would due to the charming details and personal touches Mandviwalla has incorporated; however, it is contemporary, world-class and truly a spectacular salon space. We leave thinking that though we came here expecting an impressive salon; we leave having learnt it is so much more!

INTERVIEW

After Hours with

RIZWAN BEYG by Amber Liaquat

It has been two decades since the brilliant and flamboyant designer, Rizwan Beyg, took the fashion world by storm with his timeless yet bold, classic yet alluring creations. There have been other successful fashion stories but never has anyone of Beyg’s stature crossed over. Rizwan rose to stardom by reinventing classic designs and giving them a flects on fashion and the small pleasures of life modern twist. The superlative designer refl MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

What is your idea of style? Style is about being comfortable in your own skin and not caring about trends or blindly following fashion. It’s more about knowing who you are and maintaining your sense of individuality. It’s best summed up in this quote “you laugh at me ‘cos Im different and I smile at you cos you’re all the same”. You can buy fashion, style you have to possess innately. What turns you on creatively? Everything! Do you consider fashion to be a language? More a philosophy than a language. What are the three signs of beauty for you in a woman? Confidence, grooming and

75

MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

individuality. What are the few childhood memories that shaped you? My exposure to travel, books and cinema, the things that opened my mind to possibilities and creativity. Are you ever jealous of another designer’s success? No, everyone has to shine in their own light. Have you failed at anything? Yes...Failure teaches you a lot more than success. It’s my mantra now. What do you fear? Mediocrity ...it’s better to be bad or good at something rather than mediocre.

Your favourite sound? The sound of rain, a baby breathing, a cat purring. There are so many sounds to love. A word you use the most? The f word and it’s called ‘Fashion’. The first time you went to a party? I never go to parties. Three things no one knows about you? I prefer that they remain unknown...mystery is very important if you want to be remembered. Your three hidden talents? Don’t know if they are hidden but I am a trained classical musician, I am a gifted chef and I am also a great psychotherapist.

BEAUTY

THE NOTEPAD Reputed hairstylist, Natasha Saigol, lists six hairstyles to watch out for in 2017

The Fringe Synonymously known as bangs, it is a style that never seems to fade out or lose its actuality. Bangs transition to go along with new fads, techniques, cuts, and face shapes. You can style them up or down, colour them in bright hues and create eye-catching angles to highlight your best facial features. Bangs have become thicker and are long enough to be split down the middle. Tip: You might want to wait until you’re back from the holidays to “cut it out”. Trust me, dealing with the heat, and your new bangs and sunscreen and a tan might prove a little challenging.

Waves S-waves are old-Hollywoodinspired, brushed-out curls (you could also call them retro waves or a vintage set). Veronica Lake was the style’s poster girl in the ‘40s, and then, seven decades later, everyone got on board, from Blake Lively to Beyoncé. Now we perfect them with a flat iron.

Power Hair Power hair doesn’t need to be ultra-styled. A simple behind-the-ear tuck can scream confidence. Slicked-back and ultracool, just add a pair of shades and you’re ready to go.

‘Bronde’ hair In some lighting it’s blonde, in others it’s golden brown. This transformative hair colour trend is called Ash bronde — and it’s the perfect warm-toned hair colour that can be adjusted to work on all skin tones. So if you’ve never considered going blonde before, maybe this is your year.

Boy cuts The boy cut hairstyle accentuates the face by bringing attention to the eyes and cheek bones. It’s a cut that’s becoming popular amongst women because of its low maintenance, as it can be quickly styled and done right with a low side parting. A slightly longer front adds just the right amount of femininity to this look. Audrey Hepburn’s enviable crop in Sabrina continues to inspire women everywhere. Even Rihanna and Anne Hathaway have sported this cut.

Tousled Waves Tousled waves don’t look the same on everyone because, firstly, we all have different types of hair and secondly, you can experiment with layering and colour. It can be loads of layers, starting on your crown, less layering, closer to the ends or something in between these two options. For instance, you may come up with an elegant feathered finish, extra drama with spiky ends or create a visually effortless effect of an out-of-bed-look. MAY 28-JUNE 3 2017

HOROSCOPE ARIES

TAURUS

GEMINI

Natives off Aries may feel inclined to try to use the slim moon in Cancer to their advantage by strong-arming the natives ves of o softer signs. Consider solving the ethics vs. efficiency issue by promising to avoid making things harder on the signs, but using such situations should they naturally arise.

Taureans a re n ott l ikk el elyy to be impacted by the moon in Ca Cancer,, and are nott like e lyy to ma ake it a trouble forr othe e rs.. Na Natii v es of this sign are e likely t o ap appr prec ecc ia a te t today as a day that they will not likely be bothered.

Naativves of this sig gn are likkely to o feel lesss co com mfortable th han n usual in n awkkwa w rd sit i uatiions, but as on ne of the mor ore social sig ig gns, should be aablle to show some control over the direcctio on of conversation today, thus helpin helping to keep themselves and others out off trouble by avoiding controversial topiccs.

Cancerians are not the sort of sign to have enemies, so provided that they stay in their own lane they should be fine. If any troubles should arise, try to appeal to Sagittarians, Leos, or Librans for help.

Natives of Leo should be e carefull about how they address colleag gues and subordinate es today, espe eci cial a ly al those of weakerr signs likke Gem min i i,i Cancer, and Piscces. Nativves of this sign are likely to be parrticularly sensitive toda ay, and too much energy or usse of the wrong euphemism co ould starttle them.

LIBRA

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

Librans should not notice any outright conflict today, but should be watchful of how the natives of strong and ambitious signs like Leo, Aries, and Aquarius may be treating the natives of softer signs like Pisces, Gemini, and Cancer (Scorpio and Capricorn are wild-cards). Whether deliberate or otherwise, communication between these signs could be precarious.

Natives of Scorpio should sting with discretion today. Natives of this sign n are likeely to experience more perceived assault thaan usual today, but will not be weakened in ttheir ability to handle it with near-lethal forrce. Those who are foolish enough to try to o manipulate Scorpios should be dealt with h without mercy, but misunderstandings should be handled with grace.

Sagittarians have an interesting opportunity to catch the wicked. Sagittarius is often mistaken for a soft sign, and anyone who makes this mistake and tries to capitalize on it will likely be left at the mercy of the wise Sagittarian.

CAPRICORN December 21 – January 19

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 18

February 19 – March 19

Na atives of Capricorn are in an intere esting position today. Capricorn is a strong sign, but it has fear in comm mon with Cancer, meaning that this ttrait will still be amplified in its native es. Those children of Capricorn who p play it cool will stay safe, while those e who show their hands to the wrong people are in danger. w

Nattives of Aquarius should avoid tryying to take advantage of the moon in Cancer, not because it is unethical, but because it is inefffective. While the manipulative Aquarius may be able to win argu uments and sway minds today, these e effects are not likely to last for very long in the minds of the people.

Children of Pisces should beware of the advances of the stronger signs. Natives of this sign are already known for being easily persuaded, and those who cannot get what they want out of a child of Pisces through reason may try to get it today through intimidation.
