How would you describe your body type? Technically, my body type is described as mesomorphthe hourglass shape. I have a naturally fit looking body and it’s not very difficult for me to lose or gain weight. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Not very much, during lazy weeks I put on an extra 2-3 kgs but on an active schedule I lose the excess weight fast enough. How has your style changed over the years? When I was younger I didn’t know what my style actually was. By the time I started choosing my own outfits, I wasn’t even sure what I liked as my style was influenced by how my mom used to dress me, along with what my friends wore depending on what was trending. Eventually I realised that I haven’t been dressing up the way I would actually like to. The more I got to know myself, the more my style and taste evolved. What are some of your current fashion obsessions? I would say one of my current fashion obsessions are PVC bags, cross body fanny packs, crop tops, sweats and of course t-shirt dresses. I also love accessorising with a uniform colour. If it’s an occasion where I can dress up, I love to wear statement pieces; it could be a chain, an ear piece, bandana/ scarf or even a belt. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing up? Less is truly more. What is the one piece of clothing that you would never wear? I am not really a fan of frock shirts. I like dresses but frocks and even frock styled kameezes don’t seem too flattering to me.
37
MAY 12-18 2019
Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think bodycon and flowy silhouettes both look good on me. In your opinion what is the silliest recent fashion trend? Two words, brand overdose. What item in your closet do you wear the most? My black boots and white sneakers. If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be? Madison Beer. What are the first items you gravitate toward while shopping? Trousers and cute pants. Which of these are you mostly likely to wear to a dinner date, red sheath evening gown or a little black dress? Little black dress. Boots, heels or flats? A good collection of sneakers actually.
INTERVIEW
Beauty with brains Ushna Shah jogs her mind as she answers a few of our quirky questions. Find out more about her likes and life. From pet peeves and guilty pleasures to her trademark accessory and current fashion fads she loves, Ushna tells us all! MAY 12-18 2019

When did you realise you wanted to pursue acting? I don’t remember wanting to do anything else. Before I could talk properly I’d put together costumes at home and put on shows for my family. Ever since then I’d star in school plays, town theatre plays and now here I am. If not an actor, what would you have rather been? A writer and director, which is something I still want to do. What has been your most rewarding project? It’s difficult to say, they’ve all been rewarding in their own ways. In one line, how would you describe your work journey? I took the road less travelled. What is the best part of being famous? Free perks. What is your guilty pleasure? Reruns of mindless sitcoms. Have you ever used your celebrity status to get out of a ticket? Always! What is your goal for this year? My goal for this year is to better myself, master emotional intelligence or at least handle it better. To be more empathetic and venture out my creativity in forms other than acting. According to you what’s something that will always be in fashion, no matter how much time passes? Elegance. What social stigma does society need to get over? Well let’s start with divorce. So many women stay in unhappy or abusive marriages simply to avoid the label imposed on them by the society. If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive who would it be? Tupac Shakur and Jinnah. Together. Biggest pet peeve? Slow drivers and noisy eaters. It makes me sick to a point where I have to leave the room. What would be your trademark accessory? I usually carry around a giant bag with me that can hold my scripts, laptop and everything else.
39
MAY 12-18 2019
What are the three fashion trends you love at the moment? Long baggy tees, tiny sunglasses and African prints. One bad habit you want to quit but are unable to? Staying up till late.
LIFE STYLE
We talk one on one with global brand building guru, banker and entrepreneur Asif Sana to talk about his newly launched men’s grooming lounge in partnership with make-up maestro Nabila. Designed as an up class club, NGents offers an experience of an era gone by. Apart from luxury services such as the grand Turkish hammam, a cosmetology clinic and a well-stocked cigar lounge guests can also indulge in fine cuisine offered at CafÊ S, authentic Italian thin crust pizza being a house favourite. Sana shares with us his passion and inspiration behind the spectacularly opulent spa that is NGents MAY 12-18 2019

How did the idea of creating a state of the art men’s grooming lounge in Lahore come about? After having enjoyed enormous success for 38 years, Nabila decided to lend her name “N” to the first ever gents exclusive salon with the brand name “NGents” in Karachi under the stewardship of her son Zair. Then team Nabila and I joined hands to initiate a partnership to meet the aspirations of contemporary gentlemen. This collaboration created the new NGents in Lahore with an aura of a classic bygone era, where uniformed barbers serve you in a luxury environment, where you can also unwind with friends over a freshly brewed cappuccino, a Cuban cigar or share a wood fired thin crust pizza from the brick oven. The salon offers a number of services, Therapy Clinic being one of them; can you tell us a bit about that? First and foremost, services offered in NGents Lahore are the basic haircut, hair styling, beard
and skincare that every man needs every two to three weeks. Nabila’s hair cut is a precision hair cut that the stylists are allowed to perform independently only after a minimum initial experience of three years followed after a rigorous training of nine months in Nabila’s academy. NGents Lahore has a communal grooming area called the Premium Lounge, where you can mix with peers while enjoying your grooming session. It also has Platinum Suites where men can have more privacy and tailor made service. Then there is ultimate luxury of an Exclusive by invitation only lounge where you can enjoy the grooming suite with your friends, partners, business associates, clients and family with the dedicated services of a butler and your own stylist. What inspired you to bring food and spa luxuries together in one place? Lahore built its first spa with good food around 400 years ago when the Shahi Hammam was built at Delhi Gate under the governor of Lahore Wazir Khan in 1635. Lahore’s Shahi Hammam used to welcome all horse riding royal guests from then Indian Empire capital of Delhi and offer them a hot bath, massage and emerging Lahore cuisine before the emperors messages were delivered to the governor of Lahore or vice versa. So in some way we wanted to recreate the same experience where men could unwind, enjoy luxury services and simply relax. What skills are required to run such service excellence business? The list can be very long but fundamentally the management philosophy has to be guest centric. Everything has to revolve around our guests. You have to train all your stylists, receptionist and

support staff to understand your guest needs. In order to lead a business successfully, one should have expertise in information management, operational efficiency; financial oversight and innovation. What are you most passionate about? I am certainly most passionate about service excellence. I want to deliver an absolute experience for our guests. In your opinion, what grooming procedures are trending more in men these days? Times have changed; men have now started to give importance to their whole body instead of just hair. Manicures and pedicures, camera smart make-up, Turkish steam hammam and facials are our highest selling services. How would you define NGents aesthetics in three words? Classic, unashamed luxury and timeless styling.

WITH SHAMOON ISMAIL
LIFESTYLE
Aspiring singer and songwriter Shamoon Ismail rises to our rapid fire challenge. From his biggest influences and favourite instruments to the habit he’ll never break and the silliest nickname ever given to him, Shamoon tells us all
What sparked your interest in music? I’ve been into music for as long as I can remember. How long have you been making music for? I started song writing around the age of 15-16 and producing music at the age of 19-20. Did you get any formal training to learn your art? No formal training, I’m self-taught. Internet, books and tutorials have helped a lot. Can you remember the first time you wrote a song? The first song I wrote was in English back in 2005. Why have you turned down record deals offered to you by Indian labels? Mainly because I want ownership of my music and total creative freedom. What is the most rebellious thing you did as a teenager? As a teenager most things I did are considered rebellious, from trying different things to getting involved in unnecessary drama. I was always in some kind of trouble. MAY 12-18 2019
44
What is the one habit you will never break? Listening to my core. What era of music do you admire the most? There are too many songs, compositions, verses, solos, productions, moods and vibes from different eras and genres that have had impact on me. It’s extremely hard to pick one. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you? First thing would be a knife that I always carry when I’m out for adventures. Second would be an acoustic guitar since there won’t be a lot do. Third, some kind of seasoning so the food doesn’t taste too bad. Growing up, who were your biggest influences? In my early teens it was mostly hip-hop, rap, RnB and mostly urban artists. Later some rock n roll legends and electronic producers. If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family think you had done? Fought with someone. Of all the instruments you play, which one is your favourite and why? Out of all the instruments that I can play, I play guitar the best so I’ll pick that as my favourite. I do enjoy playing the drums as well. What is your vision for the future? I want to make music for as long as I’m inspired. Learn every day and keep improving. Challenge myself more with a focused headspace.
