How would you describe your signature make-up style? My signature make-up style is about making the skin look real and not masked by one colour. I always use two-tothree foundation shades and give the skin true dimension without looking cakey. The make-up should look like it naturally belongs to the person. What do you love most about make-up? I love that make-up can really bring out your personality. Make-up is unique to each individual which makes being an artist even more enjoyable What are the three tools in your make-up kit that you can never be without? Beauty blender, eyebrow brush and tweezers.

What are the popular beauty trends this season? This season is about embracing the drama and acting casual about it. Neons and pops of colour are making its way in. Which celebrity would you want to do make-up on? The Kardashians. I would love to challenge my creative side to do something different since they’re already so glamorous! Do you listen to your client’s suggestions when doing their make-up or trust your craft? I always work as a team with my client. I listen to their ideas and explain my vision so we can come up with a tailored look together.

Dubai based make-up artist Madu has made it rather big in the world of beauty and is especially known for her talent in makeovers. Winner of Asia Bridal Middle East and with over 12 years experience in the make-up industry, Madu has recently opened her studio in Lahore and is catering to fashion shoots as well as bridal and party make-up. One great make-up tip: Always apply a moisturiser for smooth foundation application. What products do you think should be a staple in every woman’s purse? I always recommend mascara, blush and tinted lip balm and of course a good sun block.

Republic

Noted barrister - television host Fatima Shaheen vouches for Lahore’s latest state- of- the- art rehabilitation facility Health Republic. Shaheen endorses #IDareToQuit, a cause that merits to be highlighted nationwide. Learn more about Health Republic, its services and the need to raise awareness about the social issues here. What is Health Republic? Health Republic is a premium Psychiatric and Drug Rehab centre in Lahore, which for the first time in Pakistan fused the concept of hospitality industry with specialised psychiatric health care. Primary focus was to curb the judgmental behaviour towards drugs users/abusers, psychiatric patients and uplift the patients’ morale so they can contribute positively to the society in general. The concept is to make patients feel e comfortable in a very luxurious/ humane environment where they can have chef prepared meals of their liking, watch theirr favourite TV shows, do yoga, play indoor sports, read books, meanwhile getting advanced treatments while they enjoy their comfortable stay at Health Republic. Tell us about the #iDareToQuit campaign The campaign #iDareToQuit is primarily dedicated to mental distresses and drug addiction in which we are trying to raise awareness about mental health well-being and drug use and abuse as the pertinent issue of Pakistan. I have volunteered to endorse this social cause which needs to be highlighted at all the levels. Substance abuse and drug addiction is the root cause of so many mental and physical ailments, social/economic problems and in many cases even death, specifically in our youth today. As a public figure, I feel I have a strong responsibility to use my fame to raise awareness and initiate conversation on issues that actually matter - hence endorsing this campaign on Drug Addiction and Mental Issues.

Also m make-up artist Rida, has stepped fforward d tto be a part of this campaign. We will not only be going to universities but schools as well. Free medical camps will follow these awareness campaigns. What is the message from the team Health Republic that they would like to share with our readers? People suffering from psychiatric and substance abuse issues shouldn’t be judged or looked down upon as we don’t know MAY 3-9 2020

what they or their families have actually gone through. Instead root causes should be identified and treatment done for such individuals and support provided to their families. These issues are manageable and should be managed. It is our duty on a whole as a responsible institute and society in general to provide love and care to such individuals and support and assist them at every stage. We believe in healing! So we don’t have another generation of drugs, alcohol addicts and trauma passing itself off as a culture. What is Health Republic’s specialised work force? issues at Health Republic is bipolar, schizophrenia, anxiety, stress, eating disorders, gambling and anti-social personalities along with drug abuse issues. The troubling element is a surge of meth/ice usage in various age groups and both genders. This is extremely alarming. We also have in-house sample collection facility for testing, emergency room and a pharmacy. What steps are being taken for awareness initiatives? We are sponsoring events in educational institutes and residential societies. We are also doing campaigns through social media, magazines and bill boards plus spreading awareness messages through distributed brochures to house holds. What is Health Republic’s Module? Health Republic has both out and inpatient facilities. Our patients have dedicated medical and admin staff assigned to them. Medical and admin teams are active 24 hours round the clock keeping track of minute details as this is an extremely sensitive operation. Detailed medical tests are performed on the premises. We are also registered with Punjab Health Care Commission. All SOPs are developed according to Punjab Health Care Commission’s guide lines. This government department assisted/guided us in developing our SOPs from broader to minute details.

How well trained is your staff? We are an equal opportunity employer. Training workshops are regularly arranged where staff is taught on various subjects including SOPS, work place sexual harassment and employees rights. How do you plan to take this project further? This is the most advanced Pakistani rehab centre in Lahore. It’s the first unit. Further units are in the pipe line and will launch operations in Karachi, Islamabad and Multan. Having access to the highest quality psychiatric and drug detox treatment is the basic right of people.

Emotional Eating During

Covid-19

What is Emotional Eating? “Emotional eating” is not a clinical term, but a term we use to describe the phenomenon of eating in response to an emotional state, rather than hunger.” Obviously, we as humans intake food for a wide variety of reasons, to kill hunger, stay active and healthy and also to comfort ourselves during stressful or emotional times – and this is completely normal. However, emotional eating is something people don’t tend to take lightly. If we look at it from society’s point, it is hard to accept that someone is eating in response to anything other than hunger. As long as eating is not your only coping mechanism, you’re safe. Emotional eating is much more common than we think. In fact people who lose their appetite are far more rare than those who rely on food to cope with whatever they’re dealing with. MAY 3-9 2020

8

How to Conquer Emotional Eating Right Now Here are some ways to conquer emotional eating: Practice Acceptance Be kind and practice acceptance. It is okay to indulge in some comfort food in fact it is good to make yourself feel better and relaxed. You may be afraid of gaining weight because we are all home bound these days. However according to fitness trainers and experts it is alright even if you do gain weight. These are stressful times and one must make their health and happiness a priority even if that means relying on emotional eating to get through this phase. Eat Enough We all know or are someone who either eats too much or does not eat at all as a way of coping. Make sure you’re taking good care of yourself and eating regularly. Try incorporating healthy food and juices in your diet. It will not only make you feel active but also fresh and healthy. Be kind and nice towards yourself and even if you do see yourself gaining a few pounds, just know it’s okay. Change The Way You Cope Try exploring other coping strategies. If eating has been your only coping strategy then it’s time to start trying new things. How would we know what we enjoy if we don’t

even ever experience or try it out. Consider other activities that can soothe, distract or release negative energy. These will vary from individual to individual. You can consider journaling, painting, gardening, calling or texting friends, try your hand on DIY projects, sketching, colouring, playing games, organising your room and closet etc. Stay Connected In times like these, where we are all home bound and have no way to socialise in person, it is important to try and stay connected to our loved ones from a distance. There are several apps you can use to do so. Zoom, Houseparty, Facetime, Whatsapp and so on. Are some popularly used apps to stay in touch with your loved ones. Practice Self-Care Practice self-love and self-care. It doesn’t mean stuffing yourself with chocolates or taking a bubble bath. It can simply mean slowing down and resting. Try to get enough sleep, shower regularly, eat good food, do things that make you happy. You don’t have to give in to society’s pressure to do something productive. You can be kind and nice to yourself and do things which make you happy bonus points if it’s also productive! Source: www.verywellmind.com

Observing Ramazan during a quarantine is something none of us have experienced before. Muslims are most active in worship during this month. Breaking our fasts together, praying in a congregation and worshipping together is something that will not be possible in many parts of the world this year; due to the compulsory social distancing to slow and eventually stop the spread of Coronavirus. While this is unfortunate, we have no choice but to social distance and stay in our homes for the safety of ourselves, our families and those around us. MAY 3-9 2020

10

Many of us are weeks into this new norm with the global coronavirus pandemic continuing to wreak havoc. And while many of us are coming to grips (more or less) with our new routines, we are now imagining what Ramazan will be like this year and how to make the best out of the situation at hand. Muslims tend to become motivated to quit bad habits during this month and indulge in practicing gratitude. Ramazan is a month of spiritual rejuvenation and discipline, and a time to strengthen our bond with the Creator. Fasting during social distancing means being confined in our homes, and not be able to embrace others to wish them a blessed Ramazan nor break bread and pray together. That’s a big sacrifice we’ll have to make for everyone’s safety and to help flatten the curve. As hard and painful as it is, this is for a greater cause. It is also pertinent to note that Ramazan is also a difficult time especially during the outbreak of COVID-16. Having the added stress of income insecurity and fear for health and safety on top makes it all the more difficult. We must remind ourselves that it is okay to feel anxious and worried without any clarity or certainty about the future.

11

MAY 3-9 2020

We should remember those who are separated or estranged from their families and are experiencing loneliness. There are those living with abusive and toxic families, and those living with chronic and mental illness. Do your part and keep a check on those who may be in this situation. A quick phone or video call can be enough to put someone at ease. With that being said, people across the world are expressing their love, support and prayers to one another and helping each other stay motivated virtually. Mosques are live streaming Friday sermons, Taraweeh prayer, and reminders to keep us motivated to continue the Ramazan rituals in our homes. The world is trying its best to keep the positive vibes alive during this blessed month of Ramazan. In times like these, it is best to be as a patient and kind towards yourself and your loved ones. Make sure to keep a check on people who are dear to you. Head out for an evening walk post Iftaar. Spend your time before or after Iftaar remembering Allah and asking for forgiveness. Don’t spend recklessly on lavish food items instead help those in need. Pray and make the most out of this Holy month. Despite this difficult situation we must train ourselves to see the silver lining. We will come out of this stronger than ever and if we live to see another Ramazan — with no COVID-19 — many will not take it for granted. Once the old normal is back no one should take anything or anyone for granted. Source: www.medium.com

Reshaping fashion during the coronavirus pandemic

If applied wisely, fashion can be used to accentuate and uplift your mood. One can play with sartorial hacks to get a tangible boost of confidence or energy. By keeping in check your hour-long grooming rituals and morning forays into your closet, absorbing your concentration in crafting fashion or discovering your personal style, you can boost to your mental wellbeing. These are some great ways to not only spend some time with yourself, but also do something for yourself. Your body is in quarantine, but your mind doesn’t have to be With most people self-isolating/self-quarantining during these unfortunate times, getting dressed daily has become more of a task. And with that, productivity has taken a toll on us. However, if you want to make these bitter-bleak mornings wellprimed for action, routine is something you should try to stick to, as it makes the day feel more real. Wake up and plan on what you’re wearing like any other day, even if nobody will see you. Getting dressed in the morning is something we do every day, some more consciously than others. So, brush your teeth, wash your face, get showered, and then dress how you want to feel, rather than how you already feel. Put on some bright colours to feel energised, wear proper clothes while working and change into your PJs when you intend to laze around. Give yourself permission to enjoy fashion. You’ll be amazed at how your dress can impact your mood and influence your cognitive abilities. Dressing up for work Fashion is an ideal way of expressing yourself at work. We get dressed to maintain the decorum of our workplace and with each outfit we, intentionally or unintentionally, communicate non-verbally to the world around us. Although people are keeping from going out for work due to the Covid-19 outbreak, successive Zoom meetings have stretched out for many. In these times, mark each new day on lockdown by ‘turning a look’. Change outfits depending on your business and who you are speaking with. Keep it toned down from what you would normally wear to work, MAY 3-9 2020

but be expressive and fashionable. e. th You could simply pair a blazer with a button-up or a sweater to give the best mix of professional and casual. While you don’t want to appear overdressed or blind to the current state of the world, you also don’t want to appear like you’ve let yourself go. It’s not just to show on the video al call, but more for your own mental fashion health. Pull a Marie Kondo ploring your Learn more about yourself by exploring own style. It’s evident that what we wear is who we are. Fashion is a way of expression: the clothes we wear daily reflect the way we see ourselves and how we want others to perceive us. Take time to identifyy the clothes tyle doesn’t you love. Developing a sense of style mean buying new pieces, but starting in your own closet. Think about the pieces you really love and the reasons behind this attachment. Is it because of how the fabric feels against your skin, or the form-fitting bright patterned shirt that makes them special? Understanding why you keep wearing certain outfits can unlock a lot of information about what’s important to you. Subsequently, hop on to step 2: Think about the clothes you hate. It’s no use keeping something you’re not likely to wear again. You would’ve witnessed many instances when you bought outfits on impulse, but never wore. You’re not alone. Take time to realise why you didn’t wear them or what you dislike about

them. Understanding what you disregard will also tell you a lot about yourself, and about what not to buy again. Improve wellbeing by crafting fashion If you’re especially interested in fashion or like to create, go one step ahead: Repurpose old or outdated clothes. Invest time in organising a fashion-focused craft session for yourself, you can’t go shopping in these times anyway. Take the items you have on hand and get your creative juices flowing. Go crazy with experimenting and be open with decorating your clothes. If yyou want to go a step further, ta take basic sewing lessons from YouTube or Google. Don’t fret over doing it perfectly, focus on DIY. It’s all about you accentuating your persona through your creation, so be open, be wild and be mindful of what you’re designing. Engaging in a mindful activity improves our mental health, as it helps us pay attention to our thoughts and feelings. Personalisation could be applied to wornout clothes, helping you develop your own unique and individual style, while crafting can be therapeutic and help relieve the stress you could be feeling. When you’re crafting, you’re giving your mind a break too by focusing on one thing and the sense of accomplishment you get could boost your mental health and improve your immune system as well.

Living well

Aymen

with

T.Edit chats with Lahore based dietitian and nutritionist Aymen Subhani. Read on as she shares with us tips to survive Ramazan during social distancing, common weight loss myths and so much more. Tell us a bit about yourself? I’m a dietitian and a nutritionist based in Lahore. I trained at Bahria International Hospital. I work only from on Instagram where I have over more than 45,000 followers. I provide online consultation to clients/ patients based upon the preference made by them. My Instagram handle is @livingwellwithaymen What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist? A dietitian is the one who has studied in a university for four to five years with major nutrition subjects like dietetics. Whereas a nutritionist has no specific education background. Dietitians can provide medical nutrition therapy to their clients unlike nutritionists. Dietitians can do 101 client consultation sessions and are more professionally reliable and equipped at handling complex case patients than nutritionists. (I am not talking about the degree holding nutritionists here.) What are some common myths about weight loss diets? Common myths: Myth: There are magic weight loss foods and fat burners MAY 3-9 2020

16

are one of them. Fact: Being in a calorie deficit and working out five times a week is the only solution to healthy weight loss i.e. calories in < calories out. Fat burners have serious health complications. Myth: Carbohydrates cause weight gain. Fact: Surplus calories cause weight gain i.e. calories in > calories out Myth: Lifting weights makes women bulky. Fact: It does not. Lifting weights is great for toning your body ladies. Myth: Fruit has sugar and should be avoided Fact: Fruit is full of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and are great for your body! Myth: Cardio is best for weight loss and works for everyone. Fact: Fat loss is different for everyone. Different things work for different people. For instance, in PCOS, we recommend slow exercises with weights to ensure they’re body doesn’t go under stress and they start losing weight gradually. Myth: As long as I’m eating “healthy foods” I don’t have to worry about my calories. Fact: Eating whole foods and natural foods is good for your body, no doubt! But it’s entirely possible to go in calorie surplus and start gaining weight even while eating healthy foods if your calorie output is zero is less than the amount you’re consuming. These are stressful

17

MAY 3-9 2020

times, what should one incorporate in their daily meals to keep their energy levels up and boost their immune system? In these stressful times, everyone is snacking mindlessly and continuously. I would recommend eating mindfully which is knowing to stop when you’re full and not binge eat food. Include healthy snacks and keeping them at hand is crucial. So on your next grocery run, be sure to get fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts to consume as snacks. e.g. pair your carrot with homemade sour garlic dip, make banana bites with peanut butter and unsweetened dark chocolate, have sunflower seeds and popcorn as snacks. To keep your energy levels up and reach your weight loss goals, be sure to add protein in your diet. It could be from

oats, bran cereals, quinoa, beans lentils, fish, chicken or beef. 50% of your calories should be from carbohydrates (30% complex carbs like oats, quinoa, bran et cetera and 20% from refined carbohydrates like rice et cetera.) Have around 30% protein intake and 20% healthy fat intake ( can be from nuts, olive oil, avocado et cetera) To support and ensure proper build up of your immune system include Vitamin A, C, E and Zinc and Magnesium food sources in your diet. You can get these easily from protein sources like meat, beef, lentils, have nuts, seeds, fiber, yoghurt, cheese, apricots, carrots, turnips, green leafy vegetables like spinach, bell pepper, strawberries, oranges, papaya, lemon etc. What tips would you like to give to those who are fasting during social distancing? • Include all food groups in your diet daily. • Include yoghurt in your sehri so you don’t get thirsty. Can be taken in the form of lassi. • Include protein in your diet to speed up your weight loss during Ramazan. e.g. beef, chicken, fish, lentils, beans etc.

• Do not eat too many fried foods for iftari. Have healthy alternatives like baked pakoras instead of fried pakoras. Eat homemade food. Do not consume carbonated drinks or sodas. • Do not drink tea and coffee for sehri. • Reduce salt intake. What are your go to meals during Ramazan? My favourite one is lemon and spinach smoothie. It’s loaded with electrolytes, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins. Also helps me stay full for longer. For iftar I prefer chicken in my meals. Or homemade channa chaat with boiled/ baked potatoes. My favourite snack after iftar is stuffed dates; with nuts or peanut butter. What does your typical day look like? Due to social distancing and staying inside, my days are usually the same and start around 10 am. After having breakfast which is usually vegetable omelette with bran bread, I work on my strategies, planning ahead for at least a week, organising my stuff and content

creation for my Instagram page. In between I play with my cats, offer prayers, help my mother in the kitchen, follow up with my clients, and binge watch Netflix. What tips and activities would you suggest to stay active and healthy during Ramazan in quarantine? You can power walk at home for 30 - 40 minutes or climb up and down the stairs starting from 10 minutes per day to 30 minutes per day. Highly effective when it comes to losing weight. You can do yoga at home. I would say opt for healthy snacking and eating more fruits and vegetables. Being physically healthy is not important, your mental health is as important as being physically fit. So relax your mind, stay calm, stay inside, read a book, read Quran and watch something good and productive on TV. There’s a very good season to watch with your family these days, Dirilis: Ertugrul. Know your history and learn how to be a better Muslim. Who are best fit to be clients for dietitians? People who want to stay healthy and

achieve their goals be that managing your disease like hypertension or weight loss and weight gain, should consult with a dietitian instead of looking for shortcuts and throwing their money down the drain and still not getting any closer to their goals. Consult a dietitian instead of blindly following the trending diet. What worked for your friend, may not work for you. So recognise what your body needs and work with that. What advice would you give to fellow dietitians? For fellow dietitians, I’d say being a dietitian, you’re always striving to grow. I’d recommend from experience that start focusing on the ideal clients that aren’t going anywhere with the results and are not coming back. Recognise the mistake, learn what went wrong, learn how to face read your ideal client into knowing whether they’re lying about following the plan or not. These kind of clients are the ones that give you the platform and room to grow and learn more. Challenge yourself into achieving your goals. MAY 3-9 2020
