WITH WARDAH KHAN EEMAN

FASHION

Stylish mommy and director at children’s clothing line, All That Glitters, Wardah Khan Eeman shares her style secrets. From the styles she avoids, to the silhouettes that complement her frame, she decodes her style Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage g

How would you describe your body type? I like to believe I’m lean usually, but the last two years of back to back pregnancies have had a major effect on my body! Has your body type changed over the last five years? Of course my body has changed in five years. I had three C-sections and it takes a while for your body to feel like itself again. I work out five times a week and have been on a very controlled diet to get back into shape. How has your style changed over the years? Having lived all over London, DC, Dubai and now Lahore, has had an effect on my fashion and style. I feel it’s changed a lot, I’m a lot more confident in what I wear; I don’t think fashion should be a ‘be-all and end-all’ of your life. These days people take it too seriously, especially in Dubai and Lahore, I stick to classic looks! In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? Well, after having my babies, I have a lot of troublesome areas but you need to be smart in how you dress. I believe in wearing clothes that flatter the good areas and don’t highlight the troublesome areas! How do you dress your body according to your body type? Like I said earlier, my body has gone through hell and back, and I’m proud of maintaining my fitness after three children and getting back into shape in less than nine months! So now I’m confident enough to wear jeans and a t-shirt! When you are fit you don’t need to think too much about how to dress up. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? To each their own, but I can’t get over how over done Lahore’s fashion scene is! People need to calm down and stop taking themselves so seriously! I miss the times when the bride looked like the bride. Now you can’t tell who the bride is. Not to forget the top to toe designer looks make me laugh and sick at the same time! Instagram really has messed with our heads. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I think good clean cuts flatter any body type! But apart from cuts it’s maintaining a fit lifestyle to maintain a fit body — that’s important! What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I shy away from anything that doesn’t make me feel confident, from outfits that everyone else will be wearing and I hate following the bandwagon, so I create my own sense of style!

One Piece, Three Ways WITH SANA SAFINAZ While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. Noor Majid Mother of two I wanted the main focus to be the outfit so I kept my accessories to a bare minimum. I wore minimal make-up since it was a day look and paired it with an emerald green clutch and high heels to accentuate the flared trousers.

47

NOVEMBER 12-18 2017

Manahyl Khan Shafi Columnist, Grazia Pakistan How versatile is this piece! I wanted to do something different so I went for a coat style which highlights the embroidery and detailing of the piece. I used a satin belt to accentuate my waist and a cobalt blue clutch that goes perfectly with my look.

48

Maha Ahmad Hussain Head of Merchandising, Sana Safinaz I went for an evening look as my shirt was stitched as a halter. I paired it with a vintage Alexander McQueen clutch and a pair of Swarovski Gina heels to create a glam look, perfect for evening events. Moreover, I kept the make-up dewy and fresh and kept my hair striaght and fuss-free.

INTERVIEW

After hours by Amna Khan

NOVEMBER 12-18 2017

What did you think of Verna’s script when you first read it? Haroon: I read it for the first time around two years ago and since it was the first time I was reading a script, I honestly didn’t know how to go about it. The first thing that strikes you when you read a Shoaib Mansoor script is how natural it is – nothing seems too made-up in his scripts and that’s what I loved about it. Mahira: The script is always great if Shoaib Mansoor has written it because he writes so well. I had an issue with the ending and I kept bugging him about it – he wrote three different endings so that it could make sense to me. How would you describe your character? Haroon: It is a complex character, largely because he has physiological issues that obviously affect his mental health. So, yes it’s not a straight-forward character! Mahira: Sara is an educated, well-exposed and serious girl who questions the system. We all have issues with the system but she is someone who isn’t passive about it. She aggressively wants to do something to change the system. She’s strong but also fearless! How did Verna challenge you as actors? Haroon: Since it was my first movie it was an entirely new experience for me but I can definitely say I have grown. I’m also happy that I got the chance to work with one of the best directors in Pakistan and a very experienced coactor. However, to find out where I stand as an actor we’ll all have to wait for November 17. Mahira: There was a lot going

59

NOVEMBER 12-18 2017

on when I started shooting for Verna; Raees was about to release and I was away from home living in Islamabad. Due to these pressures, I told myself I won’t let the role of Sara take over me. I never got into real method except for a few scenes maybe because I didn’t want to carry her emotional baggage. However, I have to admit, by the end of the movie, it took over me involuntarily because of the depth and strength of her character. So, yes it was a new experience and made me grow as an actor and as a person. The trailer shows you as a woman in love, a woman who’s revengeful, betrayed and a woman who seeks justice. How challenging was it to switch into these different forms? Mahira: It was not that difficult because my character evolves pretty quickly in the movie and the storyline doesn’t focus on romance too much.

What should the audience expect from the movie? Haroon: The audience should expect a lot of hard-hitting stuff – stuff they haven’t seen or heard before. To me that is Shoaib Mansoor’s forte, he doesn’t present you with regular run-off-the-mill ideas. Mahira: It is a Shoaib Mansoor movie but it is different from his other movies. Khuda Ke Liye and Bol shed light on multiple issues and topics whereas Verna focuses on one subject which is what makes it different from the other Shoaib Mansoor movies. What are your views on the #Metoo campaign? Haroon: It is an issue that needs to be talked about as much as terrorism or corruption needs to be talked about. However, in light of recent events, I feel we tend to take things in the wrong direction, so we need to be very careful with how we address these issues. Mahira: It’s very very cool! It’s amazing how it has encouraged and empowered people to share their stories. Are there any exciting projects in the pipeline for you? Anything we should be looking forward to? Haroon: A lot of opportunities have popped up for me but I haven’t accepted any of them because I still don’t know where I stand as an actor. It is the audience’s response that will tell me where I’m headed after Verna.

Mahira: Maula Jutt is next and then another project with Dawn Films starring me and Sheheryar Munawar. What did you enjoy most while shooting this film? Haroon: Working with Shoaib Mansoor not just as an actor but more so as a musician was a dream come true and the most memorable experience. Mahira: My crew and the pulao I was served day and night! A trait your character has that you wish you had too? Haroon: Nothing! I wouldn’t want anything from that character and that is probably why it was so challenging for me. Mahira: Her decisiveness! Any memorable moments while shooting for the movie? Haroon: There were many memorable moments but one that will probably stick with me forever is the part where I had to go through military training for some scenes. There were some outdoor scenes that were done under water which were really challenging for me. Mahira: When we’d just be chilling and having a good time on the set. A character from any movie you wish you could play? Haroon: I’m a huge cricket fan so Aamir Khan’s character from the movie Lagaan. Mahira: Cate Blanchett’s role in Blue Jasmine. NOVEMBER 12-18 2017

THE VAULT WITH AIM COUTURE

Talented jewellery designer, Anmber Iqbal of AIM Couture unlocks her vault. From the pieces she is emotionally attached to, to how she ended up in the business of jewellery making, she shares it all How and when did you become interested in jewellery? Like many others in the business, it started as a hobby. I showcased at Henri Bendel, a luxury accessories store and other venues in Manhattan, New York. It all started in 2009 with 15 pieces and now I have more than 500 oneof-a-kind pieces in my inventory. I always had a thing for shiny things and meeting new people and this business did both for me. I believe that you do not need a business degree to run a business. For me there are two important things in the retail business. 1) Best customer service 2) Keeping your customers interested in your product by launching new designs regularly. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery (precious or costume)? I myself don’t wear earrings much but I’m a big fan of statement necklaces, cocktail rings, and bangles so you’ll see a lot of my favourites in my inventory. Quality mix metals, sterling silver with platinum or gold micron plating and natural gemstones are the elements of my exquisite pieces. I also make 21-22K real gold and real diamond pieces upon the customer’s request. Where is your jewellery made? I have two main production houses, one in India and one in Pakistan and I plan to expand further. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? I’m emotionally attached to my whole business. Every piece is precious to me as I put great effort and time to hand pick or design them. But my all-time favourite pieces are anything with tassels.

it’s easy and less time consuming for re-ordering. So I had this beautiful turquoise bangle design in mind, sketched it and gave it to my manufacturers in India to start on its master mold. It took them three months to make the first piece and I must say it was exactly how I imagined it. Now that’s one lucky scenario and it isn’t the same every time. Sometimes, after a couple of attempts they produce the piece I want. Time and money lost, delays the launch of new lines.

Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? It takes a few weeks to come up with designs, the colours, size, material and most importantly the budget and how long it’ll take to produce one piece. Once the master piece is done,

Future plans? I would like to be recognised by western and eastern boutiques all over US and internationally, and be able to stock my exquisite pieces there.

What inspired you to bring new desserts to the menu? Cosa Nostra has established its reputation as the only purveyor of premium gelato in Pakistan. Our customers naturally gravitate towards the gelato as their dessert option but we felt that it would be fun to pair the gelato with a range of complementing dessert items. That was our first creative impulse, but the dessert menu grew from there to include other things. What was the main challenge of developing a new dessert menu? The development process is always very interesting! The challenge is to standardise the recipes and maintain the quality of any new product. How are Cosa Nostra’s new desserts different from what other restaurants are offering? Our objective was to prepare desserts with a home baked flavour, using natural and high quality ingredients. All our desserts are made from scratch and we don’t use any flavour bases or premixes (which are quite common in other commercial kitchens). What are some of the challenges of being a restaurateur? There are many challenges. We try not to dwell on them!

75

NOVEMBER 12-18 2017

What continues to motivate or inspire you to come up with a new menu? The motivation is to excite our customers and have a menu that keeps changing and evolving. We’ve recently added some new items to the La Pizzeria menu and the response has been great. The focus is always to try new things and keep our customers happy. What is your least favourite culinary trend? This is Pakistan specific, but I really don’t understand how people can put Thai, Chinese, Italian, French, etc cuisine on the same menu! Five words to describe your latest dessert menu? Fresh, delicious, sinful, home-made goodness! What’s your favourite dessert from the menu and why? My favourite is the Strawberry Pavlova. I love fruity desserts! On a particularly indulgent day I crave our Warm Date Pudding, which is delicious with a hot cup of coffee. Also the Chocolate Fondant is to die for!

The film-maker received flak after she called out the doctor for harassing her sister, which sparked a debate among the public, with many questioning whether sending a friend request is considered harassment or not. Some called Obaid-Chinoy an influential personality, who over-used her power to destroy someone’s career.
