LIFESTYLE

Da i ly 6am: I have a dream that I am dropping my best friend to Nepal, where I recently was shooting episodes of my TV show. I say bye and drive down the road, noticing the tall trees that are backlit by an early morning winter sun. Something about this feels really good. I look down and see a wheelbarrow that’s filled with bright-green, fleshy leaves. Then I realise that my friend left her luggage in the back of my car! I don’t know what to do, so I wake up, realise that it was all a dream and go to the toilet.

11am: I was up till 4am rehearsing my lines, re-enacting in front of the mirror, and watching Billy Crystal host the Academy Awards for inspiration, so this is an early wake up, but I have a busy day ahead. My cat Mila is comfortably curled up and fast asleep on the couch. I draw the curtains to let light in, much to her annoyance, and spend five minutes giving her morning cuddles. I yell out “Sangeeta! Coffee!” She brings in a freshly brewed sippy cup of iced coffee.

12pm: After a decent tuck in of my regular breakfast including, lemon water, freshly squeezed juice, bajray ka paratha and an everything omelette, I check my email, social media and return calls. I make a costing plan for a commercial I’ve been asked to direct.

2pm: I’m at Core for my personal training session with Junaid. I love being here. It’s a great escape from the polluted, manic

Grind

WITH ADNAN MALIK

Karachi. It is very important that I feel like I’m in good shape for hosting tonight. However, I was told by my designer not to do upper body workouts, as it would ruin the fitting of my suit. Junaid suggests we do core work. I hate him sometimes! While warming up on the treadmill, I rehearse my lines for the show.

Talented actor and director, Adnan Malik, turns host for the Hum Style Awards 2016 in Karachi. We keep up with his hectic day leading up to the award show, to find out exactly what it takes to do it all

4pm: After a homemade steak and salad for lunch, I decide to take a catnap for an hour.

5pm: I wake up and decide to do a meditation from meditationoasis.com. It’s been insane the last few weeks, between shooting in Nepal, walking the Élan couture show and rehearsing for the Hum Style Awards, while simultaneously getting my apartment renovated. I need to unclutter and get in the zone.

6pm: I head over to Rashid’s Salon to get my beard trimmed, and hair cut and styled. While there, I run into Uzair Jaswal, a host of other celebrities and friends getting groomed too. It’s funny how salon time is now a ‘guy’ thing also. Rashid fills me in on all the latest gossip.

7pm: I put on my bespoke Sapphire suit and head out!

8pm: I pick up my brother Saqib on the way to the awards, which are held at the Expo Centre. My playlist on Spotify, ‘Discover Weekly’ is killing it. NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

9pm:

1am:

Backstage is really well organised. Nida Butt’s Mad School, Hum TV and Production 021 have done a fantastic job. There’s food, an information desk, separate rooms for various tiers of talent, a styling area for Nabila’s grooming team, a photo booth and a trailer in the back with a bathroom for the celebrities. This feels good! There’s also a bunch of dancers in from Dubai, and one of them is making a Snapchat video in Spanish. Pakistan feels so international right now.

We are finally on stage. My act is that I’m ‘looking for a wife’. I thought I’d take a jibe at myself, since getting married is such a hot topic in Pakistan, and I’m pretty single. While looking for a wife in the front row, Aamina and I go about our hosting duties. It’s always such a pleasure working with Aamina, I think she has the kindest disposition in the industry. Positive and full of heart!

10pm: The red carpet is full on! There are lots of people vying for attention. Photographs, selfies, Snapchat – the iPhone’s are buzzing! Events like this are amazing because they bring the industry together each time. Everyone’s looking spiffy and there’s a really positive vibe.

11pm: I sit in the front row with Meesha Shafi and Sheroo, both of whom I’ve been seeing strut their stuff at rehearsals. I’m most excited about Ahmed Ali Butt’s opening number with Meesha and Umair. Nida Butt and Ahmed have a great working relationship after collaborating on Grease, and this is Ahmed’s time to shine. The SMD screens, the customised song (written to comment on the current media scene and generously taking jibes at all celebrities) and all the backup dancers make it by far the best opening act I’ve seen at a show in Pakistan. It’s electric! Game on.

12pm: Aaminah Shaikh and I are looking at ourselves in the mirror of the trailer, rehearsing our lines and cracking up, while Shoaib Malik is using the bathroom. He overhears us making fun of cricketers and lets out a chuckle. 57

NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

2am: Aamina and I do some of our best skits but the audience has really thinned out. It is 2am. We manage to stay inspired, after all this show will be on TV.

3am: The show ends! I conclude my search for a wife by saying I don’t think I want to marry someone in show business. I mean, who wants to bring their work home with them? Then Ahmed Ali Butt, Ayesha Omar and Nida Butt join us on stage to bid adieu to the 50 people who are now left.

3:30am: I find Ehtasham bhai backstage, the director of Sadqay Tumhare, and we get into a long discussion about films and Pakistani cinema. Saqib is constantly ringing, saying we should leave. Some of us consider an after party, but that idea is short lived.

5am: I finally get home, take a long shower, pull out some leftovers from the fridge, and Mila and I watch the latest episode of Dil Banjaara online. I cringe at my performance. Oh, well, the Nepal episodes are going to be awesome, I tell myself, as I finally lay my head on a pillow.

6am: Deep in dreamland.

A VELVET AFFAIR Sania Maskatiya’s winter festive collection, featuring the stunning Amna Ilyas, sets the perfect tone for the upcoming festivities this season. STYLE Anatomy WITH MARWA CHUGTAI

A socialite and a true fashionista, Marwa Chugtai talks to us about her style evolution. From discovering the right cuts, to learning to be comfortable and confident in any silhouette, this style-savvy girl gives us all the right tips

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

68

How would you describe your body type? I am extremely curvy. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Oh it’s always changing! My weight has constantly fluctuated since before I can remember, and being a complete foodie doesn’t help the cause. When I moved to Chicago for a brief period, I lost control of my body and shot up four to six dress sizes! With my body type there’s a very thin line between flattering and well, just not. That was a wake up call and since then I’ve worked really hard to come back down to a size eight, and have a much more toned body. It feels really good! How has your style changed over the years? What I had back in school, I definitely wouldn’t classify as style, but I guess we’ve all been there. I was always in baggy clothes and had t-shirts in every colour of the rainbow. It was only when I moved to Europe for college that I began experimenting with my style and became obsessed with high-street fashion. My style reflects my personality — it’s comfortable, fun and stands out. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? I call it the JLO disorder.

69

NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

How do you dress your body according to your body type? I avoid loose-fit clothing and opt for high waist options in skinny jeans, pants and culottes. On a casual day you’ll spot me in graphic tees with ripped jeans and low-top trainers. For formal occasions, my go-to options are skirts, gowns or jumpsuits paired with a statement clutch. Currently I love headpieces and off-shoulder tops. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I guess we’re all guilty of it, as everyone likes being trendy and fashion forward, but you shouldn’t forget that nothing looks good unless you’re comfortable in your own skin. Sometimes it’s best to be different. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Silhouettes which highlight my waist and follow my curves. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? Comfort is key for me, so I tend to avoid low cuts and short dresses. Though I love peplum tops on other girls, you’ll never catch me in one. These things just don’t suit me.

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY WITH ZEEST ASAD AND BAKHTAWAR MALIK

Zeest Asad, senior executive at Guard Group, and her younger sister Bakhtawar Malik, student, talk to us about their unconditional bond. From running around in theme parks together, to growing up to be the best of friends, these sisters are #goals in everyway

What is your first memory of each other? Zeest: Rocking her in her bouncer. Bakhtawar: Her dancing on my first birthday — I’ve seen the videos! What is the craziest thing you have done together? Zeest: We ran around a theme park in swimsuits where no one could understand what we were saying. Bakhtawar: We’ve done one too many crazy things together, but the craziest memory would definitely be when we got lost in a water park in China. Chinese signs, and Chinese people, none of who understood a word of English surrounded us! What did you get punished for the most as a child? Zeest: Not being able to swallow medicine, which I still cannot. Bakhtawar: I don’t remember being punished for anything specific, but I do remember that I would have to wear 10 layers of clothes in the winter. Sweaters under shalwar kameez were a must at winter weddings. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Zeest: A light brown, full-length cardigan that I can wear with everything. Bakhtawar: I definitely can’t choose one piece of clothing from her closet! NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

70

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Zeest: I would go for my Masters. Bakhtawar: I would take advantage of being the eldest in the family! What is the one thing you love about your sister? Zeest: She can lighten up any tense situation with her bubbly nature. Bakhtawar: What I simply love about her is that she is someone who has never badmouthed anyone in her life. She is truly beautiful inside, and out. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Zeest: Once I’m done giving her the silent treatment for a little while, we just start talking. Bakhtawar: It’s usually my fault (guilty), so I am the one who always has to make up for it by apologising. What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you did too? Zeest: How she looks good in everything so effortlessly. Bakhtawar: It’s not exactly a talent, but I really wish I could be half as patient and tolerant as she is. Describe your sister in three words: Zeest: Fun-loving, living-on-the-edge and a fashionista. Bakhtawar: Calm, organised and soft spoken. Which fictional character is your sister most like? Zeest: Dee Dee from Dexter’s Laboratory. Bakhtawar: Betty from the Archie comic books. How are your personalities similar? Zeest: Both of us love being independent. As much as we enjoy being with family and friends, we always need our space and like our ‘me’ time. We also enjoy being adventurous and crazy together, and have an obsession with junk food. Bakhtawar: We’re adventurous, crazy and big foodies. We share a special love for junk food like no one else I know. I can’t live without my sister because… Zeest: She is my baby sister, my walkie-talkie and my entertainment. I can’t live without knowing what’s happening in her life. Her happy-go-lucky nature cheers me up every time. Sisters are the most genuine best friends, and are always there for you. I’m blessed to have her! Bakhtawar: I can’t live without her because she is my confidante, my best friend and literally like my second mother. She is the only one who can listen to my endless whining; I can’t imagine my life without her. Sisters are the most genuine friends and I feel truly blessed to have her.

Choose to go subtle with a neutral top or be a diva in royal blue or bright red. The designer claims these pants are a must have for your winter wardrobe!

WITH LAYLA CHATOOR

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diơerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Shehr Bano Hussain Journalist

My avant-garde style is reflective of my personality. I decided to pair the Layla Chatoor pants with a midnight black sequined jacket to add a sultry retro-vintage feel to the outfit. It’s reminiscent of Warhol’s muse, Edith Sedgwick’s personal style, who I am heavily influenced by. To accentuate the glitzy black jacket, I paired it with my pearl-embellished sulphate blue tank top. The floral detail on the oatmeal pants complemented my chunky black platforms with gold buckles. The ensemble that I created didn’t require assistance from jewellery, as I opted for bold pieces with the statement pants. For my hair, I went for beach-waves. I would wear this outfit to a make a statement at a formal dinner. NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

72

Hira Javeri

Creative director and designer, Ali Javeri Jewelers My personal style is edgy, vintage and heavily inspired by the 90s. I love leather jackets, booties and chokers. I also tend to go bohemian sometimes, so it just depends on what I’m feeling. I paired these Layla Chatoor pants with a classic navy blue button down from Intermix and an open-back, white Club Monaco blazer. Without a doubt, the easiest way to pull any look together is by accessorising, therefore I added two statement pieces — my vintage Versace bag and my Ali Javeri Jewelers spiked gold bracelet. I tied the whole look together with white Jeffrey Campbell platform heels. For my hair, I got a voluminous blow-dry. I think this makes for a great daytime look.

Daniya Sardar

Postgraduate, entrepreneurship

I would describe my personal style as versatile and one that varies according to the occasion and how I’m feeling. I can go from simple to bold, but I generally prefer to keep it straightforward and chic. I wore these elegant Layla Chatoor pants with a cut-out top to complement the embroidery on the pants. This also added a formal touch to the silhouette. When it comes to my hair, I like going for a glamorous look, so I curled my hair loosely and backcombed it for a little volume. I kept my make-up simple with basic winged eyeliner and bronze blush on. I completed my outfit with nude heels and pearl drop earrings. I would wear these trendy pants on a formal occasion, be it a daytime tea, lunch or dinner. 73

THE CORNER WITH SHAMSHA HASHWANI The talented luxury designer walks us through her favourite corner, her guestroom, and shares why it holds a special place in her heart By Sanya Pervez Hussain

O

n a warm sunny afternoon, we visit Shamsha Hashwani’s beautiful home in Karachi. Upon arriving, we are warmly greeted with fresh apple juice and delicious homemade wontons. Then begins our tour. As we step into her recently renovated guestroom, we notice a beautiful Tussaduq painting on the right. The colours in the painting complement the theme of the room, giving it rich definition. The painting is simple, yet makes a bold statement. We come across two large windows overlooking a luscious garden. While we take a closer look, Hashwani shares that the garden includes a walking track, where her husband goes for a morning stroll. A bed from Larry with a brown leather, cushioned headboard catches our eye, complementing the sunlight coming from the windows. We then eye the smaller details and unique furniture around the room, such as the

turquoise, suede two-seater, a brown wooden centre table trunk and two versatile marble tables used as coffee tables by Zeh. An intricate Persian rug by Afghan Carpet under the centre table, adds elegance to Hashwani’s marble floor. “My vision behind this corner was to utilise the space as best as I can, to make it look spacious, modern and most importantly, comfortable for my father who stays here often,” says Hashwani. As she continues to show us around, she mentions the hard work that went into this room and how the design by Naheed Mashooqullah makes the room her favourite spot for her father to stay in. Hashwani adorns the seating area with monochrome striped cushions along with a brown leather panel, holding a plasma TV. A white ottoman finished with brown polish, sits in front of the bed adding more seating space, and style, to the room. Her love for experimentation is evident in the way she plays with NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

76

various colours and materials. As we look around in awe of the spotless space, Hashwani informs us that the room is still not complete! She has more décor and furniture coming in. We spot a vase of lilies, and some candles used as decoration. She claims that she uses these pieces to spruce up the room, but we conclude that they also add warmth and depth to the area. “This room has changed a lot over the past years. A few years back, before I had opened my boutique, I began my business from home in this very room. Therefore this corner has a lot of meaning to me. After I shifted to my boutique, I thought I would change it completely and customise it for my father. He has supported me throughout my business and this is my way of showing appreciation. It also makes me realise how far I have come,” explains Hashwani. Now, this corner is primarily used as her father’s bedroom. The large windows serve as a pathway for her father to feel close to nature and enjoy his stay. “In his room I have also created a lounging space for when he has guests over, so they can comfortably enjoy themselves,” she says. Key elements found in Hashwani’s corner, such as jute, grey wallpaper and photo frames, do justice in brightening up the space. We wonder

77

NOVEMBER 20-26 2016

which components are her favourite, so we pose the question: “My favourite element is the desk, as my father always enjoys sitting on a spacious desk where he can work. It is a simple yet modern wooden desk, placed in such a way that he can watch television if he needs a break, or enjoy the beautiful view of our garden outside.” Cherishable memories of her beloved father, associated with this room, explain why this corner happens to be so special to our kind-hearted host. Hashwani’s warm and compassionate nature, strong bond with her father, and love for art and experimentation shines through in her favourite space. As we say our goodbyes, we walk out of the room admiring how well this corner depicts Hashwani’s personality, interests, and emotions.

THE NOTEPAD

ART ‘Illusion’ in Budapest, Hungary ‘Illusion’ found a beautiful home in Budapest, Hungary. This piece is very close to my heart as it got me the most recognition as an artist. Many international art pages shared this painting, I won an international competition, and I received ample appreciation in the form of likes, shares and comments. And of course, how adorable is the little angel of an owner?

Sara Abid is a self-taught artist who started painting in 2012 and started Artsy a year later, a brand through which she donates 100% of her earnings to charity. Here she jots down creations of her own, that are most dear to her

‘Reflection’ series in Florence, Italy Umbrellas, rain and vibrant colours are dominant features in my work. For me, an umbrella symbolises shelter, protection and security for an individual, whereas rain and the vibrant colours in the background reflect the different phases and experiences of life. I love how bold colours bring a plain canvas to life, the use of which projects positivity in my paintings. Positive energy brings joy, and this is exactly what I want my audience to experience. ‘Pak Meets Turkey’ series in Washington DC, USA Bold, bright and colourful, Pakistani truck art is always a celebration on wheels. I took it as my subject since I call my journey ‘a roller coaster ride’ — full of madness, joy and positivity. While painting this, I felt all these energies colliding and spilling onto the canvas. The cloudy effect in the background reflects the spiritual connection I feel while painting.

‘Freedom’ in Hermosillo, Mexico Gustav Klimt is one of my favourite artists and I took inspiration from his work to create this piece. The lovely owner, Claudia Barcelo, said to me upon purchasing the painting: “Freedom means a lot to me and your painting reflects the beauty of women and the rights of every individual to be free. The colours and the structure of your painting tell the observer a story of the simplicity and the complexity of life.” ‘Street of Hope’ in Seoul, South Korea I had an exhibition in South Korea held at ES Gallery, in 2014. My favourite work from that exhibition was ‘Street of Hope’ for which I wrote a poem as well. The last lines read: ‘Why not walk into the street of hope, Hope is a rainbow of positivity, Hope is free of cost, and it is surely the last thing ever lost...’

‘In Her Shoes’ in Kuwait City, Kuwait I shipped this piece to a Lebanese couple living in Kuwait back in 2013. I feel it’s needless to explain why is this my favourite piece, just look at it...

‘In Search’ in Dubai, UAE It was a particularly proud moment for me when a retired Pakistan air force officer became the owner of one of my favourite works. NOVEMBER 20-26 2016
