FEATURE
THE VAULT WITH MARIAM REHMAN The brains behind Stratford Shoes, Mariam Rehman shares how she got inspired to start her own shoe line, how she established her brand and the designs she loves!
How and when did you become interested in shoes? I have always been a shoe-lover. More than anything, I have always wanted a huge collection of shoes in my closet. I would start looking at people from their feet up, haha. Good shoes always attracted me and I would always want a pair for myself. Over the years, the local market got flooded with too much blingy stuff which I found hard to digest and comfort was also going out of the window. The international ones at that time always burned a hole in my pocket. Finally in 2012, it dawned on me that rather than drooling over others’ shoes, why not start a line of my own with comfortable, trendy, and affordable footwear for everyone. Share a story with us about how you designed one of your favourite pairs? My favourite pair has to be this piece that we did with the Eiffel tower on it. We were going to bring out a simple kolhapuri pair in a shocking pink colour and while choosing the materials, I stumbled across this Eiffel Tower shoe clip which fit perfectly on the strap. As funny as it may seem, we put it on there and it received a great response from customers. Everything about that shoe turned out to be perfect. Is there any design that you are emotionally attached to and why? Initially, when I started off a lot of people including the karighars would discourage me. They thought it was just a hobby that I am wasting money on. But it wasn’t; I had already done a short course in shoemaking so I knew exactly what I was jumping into. One of the designs that I made in my first collection had really chunky embellishments on it and everyone told me they looked gaudy and too typical and would not sell. But luckily for me, it was the most bought pair from my launch collection.

NOVEMBER 26-DECEMBER 2 2017
The hardship and criticism I faced for it is exactly what makes me emotionally attached to it. Tell us about your favourite shoes from your collection? My favourite shoes are the simplest ones. They are what I wear every single day. Most of them are blue, by the way. They include Trinkets, Blue Press, Flutter and Arnie from our latest collection. They are the pieces truly made from the heart. Is there anything on your radar that you want to make in the future? Yes, there are tonnes of things on my radar. But the project on the very top is sadly a secret that I can’t spill at all. But it will be something definitely one of a kind which has never been done before. Other than that, we really want to bring out our formals now which would include heels and wedges and varieties other than flats.
WITH SANA MOHAMED
FASHION
Fashionista and creative head at Hina Mohamed, Sana Mohamed, decodes her style. From the styles she loves, to the silhouettes she avoids, she shares it all Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

How would you describe your body type? I think my body type would classify as a lean column structure. I have a slim upper and lower body with broad shoulders. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body type has more or less remained the same. I have always maintained a healthy diet and like to keep myself fit. Sometimes I get, “You are so skinny, you don’t need to diet or exercise!” Well, as cliché as it sounds, I always say, a balanced diet is a good one and you need to stay fit to stay fabulous. Plus, I love kickboxing so why not do something I love? How has your style changed over the years? I think my style has evolved with fashion and with my love for experimenting with new looks all the time. On a regular day, I carry a more uniform look: a plain white or blue shirt with black pants. We are fortunate to live in a time where effortless denim is always on trend which is so versatile. When it comes to a formal look, I like to experiment with colours and cuts, which complement my understated, elegant style. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My cheeks are my most troublesome area. All my friends who know me well know that I would love a slimmer looking face any day. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I tend to lean towards tapered or high-waisted pants to complement my figure, often paired with a loose-fitted top to give a fuller look to my upper body. Sometimes, I like to wear tucked in shirts and accessorise them with a belt. I love belts! Sometimes I wear one around a top or even a kurta. With my body type, I tend to carry a cross-body bag to go with most of my casual looks. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Definitely, wearing boots as I feel our winters are not harsh enough here and it does not really serve the purpose! Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Button-down shirts and anything with a wider neck, which highlights my neck and collar bones. For my lower body, I have noticed tapered pants and knee length pencil skirts tend to sit well. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I shy away from wearing crop tops as they can tend to look a bit skimpy as I have an inward waistline. I do shy away from wearing very high heels simply for comfort reasons.

Sara Omar Mian Creative Director at Lajwanti This black top was my favourite piece from Zonia’s collection Zelliij. Anam Sethi Freelance Writer, Entrepreneur and Dessert Consultant This black top from Zonia’s collection is definitely a statement piece so I paired it with a simple black dress and sheer leggings. I also added pink heels and pink lipstick for some colour. I’d wear this outfit for a fun night out with the girls, or even to a concert or a fashion event.
