Ali Tareen We love Ali’s effortless look. His dark blue, cuffed jeans complement his white shirt and grey cardigan perfectly, allowing the brown leather shoes to stand out and complete the outfit.

Mahgul Kabir Mahgul wears an all-black, full-sleeved dress, accentuating her petite waistline with a beige leather belt. Her dalmatian print heels give her otherwise simple look some edge.

Amina Sibtain Amina opts for a sea pink velvet top, keeping in line with this season’s trend. Her frilled pants add that extra oomph — we can’t keep our eyes off her!

How would you describe your body type? I am tall, with a lean upper body and fuller hips. Has your body type changed over the last five years? My body type has definitely evolved over the last six years, as that’s when I had my son. Motherhood changed my body and although I exercised throughout my pregnancy, and returned to being healthy and fit soon after, I definitely find it more difficult to lose weight in my 30s. How has your style changed over the years? My style has definitely evolved. I now tend to choose less busy and more structured outfits where the focus is on quality and fit. I believe in being simple in my choices and my wardrobe tends to be more monochrome than print heavy. I love elegant cuts and believe that with the right accessories, even a simple men’s shirt and jeans can look smart. As a mom I like to be comfortable and enjoy my clothes, while keeping it trendy. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? Like most Pakistani women will tell you — my hips! How do you dress your body according to your body type? I love experimenting with my choices as long as they look good! I tend to be particular about the quality of jeans and pants I own, and invest in items that are flattering for my lower body. For example, I would rather invest in an expensive pair of jeans and pair it with a Zara top. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? I think the biggest mistake people make is when they blindly follow trends that are not appropriate for their age or body type. Additionally, keeping in mind the culture that we live in, I think dressing appropriately for the event one is going to, and being aware of one’s surroundings is also important. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I am experimental with my choices and would describe my style as eclectic — my wardrobe is a reflection of that. Flattering tops, jackets or anything with an interesting back is definitely my weakness for eveningwear. I also love anything structured and well tailored, from a fitted top to a t-shirt with jeans to a trendy evening jumpsuit or even a pair of overalls. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I hate anything ill-fitted or poorly tailored and I guess an outfit that is too snug is not my thing!

THE VAULT WITH MADIHA IHSAN Madiha Ihsan’s mission is to allow people throughout the world to enjoy the beauty of gemstones and experience the comfort that wearing them brings. Her jewellery line, Opal by Madiha Ihsan, creates personal adornments that are worthy of being passed down from one generation to the next and here she talks about some of her favourites How and when did you get interested in jewellery? If memory serves me right, since my childhood I used to break things in order to make a unique design out of them. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? All of my pieces are my favourite. I put in a lot of effort to try and catch up with new trends for these designs.

Is there anything on your radar that you want to get in the future? I am greatly inspired by the jhumars and maatha patis worn by Meena Kumari in Pakeeza. They were pure, traditional and evergreen fashion statements, and I want to present these traditional ornaments in a modern way through my own designs.

Where did you get these pieces? I have created a lot of the designs but sometimes, I really do need the help and support of my team. I take suggestions from my friends and family and find that my children are my biggest critics. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to and why? I wear my old mala which was the first piece I created when I was a college-going girl. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? I am a jewellery and ring maniac. However, each year on my anniversary my husband says, “beauty needs no ornaments.” Every year, I used to acknowledge his feelings but after a few years my husband gifted me a diamond ring on our anniversary, which is so close to my heart. The ring is precious and beautiful, but what made it special is that he gifted it to me and of course the surprise factor. I always wished to have that ring. NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY WITH RIDA SHAHID AMJAD, ANUSHEH SHAHID AND MEHA SHAHID

Rida Shahid Amjad, the fashion designer behind the label’s Rida Shazad and Ivory, Anusheh Shahid, brand manager for HSY in Karachi, and Meha Shahid, visual communication design student, take us through their sisterhood. From jet setting to Turkey together to always being there to comfort one another, these sisters show us why blood runs thicker than water

NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

58

What are your first memories of each other? Rida: My first memories are doing my younger sisters’ make-up while playing dress up. I thought I was a pro! Anusheh: Our weekends! They were always the same — toy store, movie store, Mr Burger, and sleepovers at our grandmother’s place. Meha: Tagging along with my sisters to their friend’s birthdays and hangouts. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Rida: All the fun things we’ve done on our trips together. Anusheh: We’ve taken some pretty crazy trips together. Most recently, was our ‘sisters’ holiday in Turkey. Meha: Our Turkey trip was pretty crazy. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Rida: Answering back to my parents when I didn’t agree with something. Anusheh: Compared to Rida and Meha, I barely ever got punished. Whenever I did, it was mostly for not spending enough time at home. Meha: Fighting with other kids, I was a bit of a bully as a child. What is the one thing you love about your sisters? Rida: We argue sometimes, but at the end of the day we stick by each other no matter what. I would be someone’s worst enemy if they tried to hurt my sisters. Anusheh: Even though we’re all living in different cities at the moment, it’s good to know that we’re always there for each other — no matter what the time or where the place. Meha: The fact that no matter what happens

59 NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

they’re always by my side. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Rida: My younger sisters always call for a truce. Anusheh: We eventually get over it and start speaking to each other like nothing ever happened. Meha: The third sister intervenes and we just hug it out, forgetting that it ever happened. What is the one secret talent your sisters have, that you wish you had too? Rida: Anusheh is very hardworking and super-smart and Meha is a go-getter and a high achiever. Anusheh: Rida is really good at making friends with anyone she meets, and Meha doesn’t let stupid stuff affect her. Meha: Anusheh is a go-getter and Rida has great people skills! Describe your sisters in three words: Rida: Talented, beautiful and intelligent. Anusheh: Rida — get’s stuff done. Meha — practically my twin! Meha: Fun, real and supportive. Which fictional characters are your sisters most like? Rida: Meha is like Stewie and Anusheh is basically Sleeping Beauty. Anusheh: Rida is like Elsa from Frozen and Meha is like Buttercup from The Powerpuff Girls. Meha: Anusheh is like April from Parks and Recreation and Rida is like Elsa from Frozen. How are your personalities similar? Rida: We are all strong-headed and kind-hearted. Anusheh: We are all stubborn and headstrong, but our hearts are in the right place. Meha: We are all actually quite sensitive but always put up a strong front. I can’t live without my sisters because… Rida: They complete me. Anusheh: Without them I would not have any sense of direction. Meha: My life would be colourless if they weren’t a part of it.

ONE PIECE THREE WAYS

T

he pink sweater by Style Berri is from the brand’s latest winter collection. The light pink sweater features detachable ruffle sleeves, hence the sweater can be worn with just the gold buttons or with the ruffle sleeves attached. This makes the comfortable yet trendy piece extremely versatile as well.

WITH STYLE BERRI

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many diơerent ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

Amna Babar Model

My personal style is either very laid back or very sleek, though I personally prefer to keep it casual-chic. I wanted to style this sweatshirt in a unique way since I like to experiment with my look often. So, I wore gold pleated trousers from Topshop and I paired it with my Roger Vivier pumps. I then added Mango earrings, a Topshop choker and Loewe glasses to accessorise. For my hair I went for a pulled back bun and kept my make-up subtle by going for a dewy look. I would wear this outfit to a brunch.

Saba Pervez Dada Creative Director, Address

I like to be comfortable but chic; for the most part I see how I’m feeling on a particular day and style my outfit accordingly. I styled the Style Berri sweater with a flared white skirt from Topshop and silver, metallic Dune sneakers. I then wore my Linda Farrow statement sunnies as I wanted to go for a casual-smart look. For my hair and make-up I got a voluminous blow-dry, and applied some subtle eyeliner and a nude-pink lipstick. I think this is a great outfit to wear to a winter brunch.

Maliha Aziz Jamil

Marketing Director, Farah Talib Aziz

This Style Berri sweatshirt is not only super trendy, but also a wardrobe staple for the winter season! It’s a go-to piece that can be dressed up or down for a chic and effortless daytime look. I layered the pink sweater with a structured, popped-collar, white, peplum button down and my ripped jeans that I live in. I went for a vintage 80s look with a massive pearl neckpiece and earrings. To make my outfit fun and feminine, I wore satin ballerina pumps and a bedazzled Miu Miu clutch. My look is perfect for a Sunday brunch!

Tucked away in the Alpine Valley of Northern Italy, the Lake Como region is often touted as a ‘playground for the rich and famous’. With breath-taking views, serene gardens and luxurious resorts, Como is the perfect destination to escape to, away from stress and the hustlebustle of a hectic daily routine. Discover our journey, as we explore this hidden gem NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

First Day Adventures 11am: Arrive In Style Arrive at Hotel Villa d’Este, your luxury resort for the next two days. Located in Cernobbio, sprawled over 25 acres of lush gardens and beautiful architecture, this world-renowned hotel overlooks the picturesque lake. Once home to the Italian monarchs, the charming estate is comprised of several villas, fantastic restaurants, prestigious stores and divine sceneries. Top that with impeccable service and a personalised concierge, and you have the perfect, opulent experience. 1pm: The Epic Escape One of the many perks of staying at Hotel Villa d’Este is easy access to the lake. Hop on a personal boat tour of the Lago di Como to get a flavour of the towns perched upon the lakeshores. When you’ve taken enough photos of the mesmerising views, make a stop at Bellagio, one of the most exclusive areas in Lake Como. 5pm: Snack Siesta Siesta, the afternoon nap, is a famous source of R&R for the people of southern Europe. We completely surrender to the idea — after so much activity, you may be fatigued. We recommend a pit stop at Hotel Splendide’s panoramic terrace bar. Their appetising classic pizza and homemade potato wedges make for a nice afternoon snack. To quench your thirst, try their freshly squeezed grapefruit juice — it will have you refreshed in seconds.

7pm: The Villa Life One famous attraction in the Como region is the elaborate villas and the lush estates spread across the area, with heavenly views of the lake. The town of Bellagio houses a few prominent villas, which you simply cannot miss. One such locale is the Villa del Melzi. This luxurious mansion once belonged to the aristocracy of Italy. The villa’s garden, Giardini del Melzi, is a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of Bellagio, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing session with your favourite novel. Take a walk through the colourful architectural structure, and discover Villa Serbelloni, another sprawling mansion with a breath-taking view. 8:30pm: Dinner With A View End your trip to Bellagio with a mouthwatering dinner. The Hotel Metropole Bellagio is your place to go. Their terrace restaurant is equipped with incredible views of Bellagio, Lake Como, and the surrounding coasts. When you’re done taking Instagram photos (trust us, this view will have your fingers on the click button throughout the night), order the ‘Grilled Sea Bass’, a local favourite. For those of you looking for the authentic flavour of Italy, indulge in the ‘Fresh Tomato Penne’.

69 NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

Second Day Serenity 10am: The Shopping Haven No vacation or getaway is complete without a bit of retail therapy. If you’re looking to indulge yourself in the best of this season’s runway trends, look no further, Hotel Villa d’Este is home to the exclusive Vergottini Boutique. From über-cool Fendi pieces to magnificent McQueen clutches, the boutique’s carefully curated selection will leave you stunned. If your taste includes vintage or local treasurables, venture out to the Centro di Como, to discover the nearby artisanal talent.

12pm: Lunch By The Pool After all that extensive shopping, you may need to refuel. To grab a casual bite, head over to the Sundeck Pool Bar. Overlooking an azure blue pool and serene lake, the bar, covered in umbrellas, offers tasty snacks. We highly recommend the scrumptious ‘Tomato and Cheese Penne’, and the juicy ‘Beef Burger’. The satisfying side of fries will complement your meal perfectly. To beat the heat, we recommend you complete lunch with a fresh plate of succulent watermelon. 3pm: The Secret Garden One of the major perks of staying at a fabulous resort is that you don’t have to wander too far to discover something exciting. One of the main highlights of the Villa d’Este is the scenic garden. Walk through acres of lush chestnut and pine trees, delicate azaleas, rose bushes and exquisite bamboos. This Renaissance-style garden is the most talked about attraction, and a 16th century mosaic — the perfect backdrop to take a few envy-evoking Snapchats.

NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

70

5pm: Tea Party For Two Hotel Villa d’Este’s Bar Canova offers the ideal atmosphere to unwind, relax and enjoy a fine cup of Darjeeling tea. The charming architecture, the fine notes of the live, classical piano and the sublime views from the terrace will leave you spellbound. To top it all off, the tea is unbelievably delectable — you won’t be able to resist just one cup. 7pm: The Royal Return Amongst the many luxurious services Hotel Villa d’Este has to offer, without a doubt, our favourite is the personal chartered helicopter. As you embark on the last leg of your journey, head back to the airport, or to another fabulous Italian resort (we hear Portifino is great), using the helicopter service. As you fly over the estate, you will witness striking views of the quaint Lake Como and its surrounding Alpine mountains. Truly a picture-perfect postcard shot.

INTERIORS

THE CORNER WITH MARYAM ALI

Maryam Ali, CEO of BloDry Bar, walks us through her salon and shares not only the inspiration behind the interiors but also why this salon is unique By Minahil Qasim

B

ased in Cantt, Lahore we make our way to BloDry Bar, a trendy express salon oĐering everything from hair services to manicures to their famous, instant brightening seaweed facials. Our host Maryam Ali ushers us into her sleek space. “I have been a resident of Cantt all my life, and the lack of a good, reputable, professional salon in Cantt was my biggest problem growing up. That, along with my lifelong passion for all things hair, was naturally the reason I choose Cantt as my flagship location,” Ali states. Inspired by salons in New York the compact space is set up by Ali’s mother Nickie and interior designer Hamza Tarar. We observe the gleaming white floors on which the black, in-house makeup stations stand out. The stations maintain well-organised sterile tools, while white-framed mirrors serve as a division between the stations.

White abstract grills enhance the grey tiled wallpaper, making the main wall the ‘hero’ of the salon. We discover that Hamza Tarar had proposed this unique idea. A white, lace-patterned counter resides in a corner ornamented with magazines and a vase filled with long, green stems, adding a relaxed vibe to the area. “New York-style salons have been the main inspiration behind the design aesthetic of BloDry Bar. Whenever I visited a salon there, the minimalistic, efficient and clean feeling I got, always inspired me, hence that’s the ambiance I aimed for,” shares Ali. As we take a seat on one of the comfortable, black armchairs, all set to get Essie’s ‘Bachelorette Bash’ painted on our nails, we notice how floating black cabinets have been added onto the off-white and silver leafing walls. These cabinets are full of products such as Fit Fibre, Zhoosh eyelashes and NOVEMBER 27-DECEMBER 3 2016

L’Oreal hair colour to name a few. “Though I wanted a very clean feel, I realised that BloDry Bar had begun looking very sterile and hospital-like, so I gave the area a complete makeover. This included adding subtle yet trendy wallpaper and complementing, assorted, black floating cabinets,” our hosts explains. We find ourselves admiring the art pieces adorning the salon wall, some of which are custom-made by Sana Dar and some are 3D art pieces from Nikita by Alina Rizvi. The art pieces not only add the right pop of colour to the salon, but also bring life to the walls. The corner stays true to the revolutionary philosophy of an express, high fashion salon. It focuses on time-efficient, hygienic services in a clean and organised space, which evokes tranquillity and peace of mind. BloDry Bar matches with Lahore’s fast paced way of life and fulfils the demands of a modern working women, with ample style.

BEAUTY Bronze eyes What goes better with a wine-stained lip than a chic bronze eye? Tom Ford has come out with lovely double-stacked creams and powder colours. The famous Kat Von D Metal Crush Eye Shadows live up to their fine reputation, and ‘Synergy’ can simply be rubbed all over your eyes with a finger for instant depth and elegance. You don’t want to miss out on this!

Photos by: Bina Khan Photography

Bina Khan, the talented make-up artist shares the seven make-up essentials she swears by. Take note as her tips and tricks are sure to keep you right on trend this season

Setting sprays Set your base with a spritz of MAC Fix+ Spray. It doesn’t grease, but instead makes you look hydrated and cared for. Caudalie also does an amazing grape water that hydrates and moisturises your skin to keep it looking fresh all night long.

High pigment drops/bases Given the dry weather, we all want invisible coverage. While Marc Jacob’s Re(marc)able Full Cover Foundation carries fives times the pigment of normal foundations, the revolutionary Cover FX drops can be added straight onto your moisturiser, your base or just be dotted on your face for seamless, invisible, flawless coverage. I love them!

A good face cream While some may clasp a jar of Crème de la Mer to their chest, I personally adore Nivea’s soft face and body cream. Dabble a few dots onto the areas where you want an extra glow and watch your face look hydrated, happy and autumn ready.

Highlighter Your highlights should be less sun-burnish and more cool and wintery for the upcoming season.. Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Glow Kit in ‘Gleam’ has a stunning set of chilly, rich shades for your skin. Swish them over your upper cheekbones, the bridge of your nose and forehead, with a softt feathery brush to get the best results.

Wine lips If you want full coverage but still want to stay in your comfort zone, try a deep, matte, dramatic shade like wine. Nothing beats Kat Von D’s Liquid Lipstick in ‘Nosferatu’, or ‘Toy’ by Nars. The stunning MAC ‘Burnt Blue’ Liptensity Lipstick is also one of my favourite wine-stained shades this season. You will find a version in every brand, high-end or high street.

Liner One can never look complete without a liner. Nothing can beat a crisp, neat liner that pulls together even the most basic look. Kat Von D’s fantastic Tattoo Liner has a felt tip that mimics the fine point of art brushes. I am obsessed with it!
