#MeToo: Filmmaker Jami reveals he was raped by a ‘powerful person in media’ Speaking in support of the ongoing #Metoo movement and to stop the attack on the movement and the victims, filmmaker Jami has revealed that he was raped almost 13 years ago by a close friend then, who is a media giant in Pakistan media industry. In a series of posts on Twitter, the director broke his silence, “I know it’s a suicide what I’m writing right now but this is important before they harm the movement,” Jami is among the very few Pakistani celebrities who have been vocal about facing sexual harassment in the industry” He further added, “I’m p****d that they are attacking the movement and victims so I’m coming here today after 13 years or so to say 99.99% survivors are telling the truth always”.

Twitter removes almost 1 million tweets on Kashmir, accused of bowing to Indian censorship Twitter has been accused of bowing to Indian censorship and suppressing freedom of speech in Kashmir, after nearly one million tweets were removed. Almost 100 accounts were also made inaccessible to locals in the last two years, spurring claims that Twitter is contradicting the values it purports to uphold. Twitter agreed to uphold 131 of 4,722 requests from Indian officials to remove Kashmir content. Since August, 2017,over 920,000 tweets that referenced Kashmir were removed.
INTERVIEW
Hira
Tareen We catch up with the versatile actor Hira Tareen who has been making waves in our showbiz industry. Read below to find out all about her character Salma in the drama Khaas, how she became an actor and so much more! What type of roles do you enjoy doing the most? I really like doing roles that challenge stereotypes and every role I have done so far has excited me that way. Each new character is a clean canvas ready to be painted on with different shades and layers and a chance to create a brand new human that comes to life on screen. For me it isn’t about the number of scenes a character has, but more about how much impact it makes in the storyline. With the character I played in Khaas, there is a sense of satisfaction people are getting from a woman who is in sharp contrast to the powerless damsel in distress who cannot stand up for herself against the lead male antagonist. However I’m still waiting for the day when a strong and educated woman will be shown and perceived in a positive light without any negative shades, someone who is altruistic and genuinely caring towards people because she’s so much more
aware of why something is right rather than just doing it because it’s a social norm. That’s the type of role that I am looking forward to doing. What did you think of the script of Khaas when you first read it? I thought it was very real and relatable. Sometimes when you are reading you think to yourself, “who on earth would talk like this in real life?” but I didn’t feel this while reading this particular script. The flow of both the dialogues and story seemed pretty natural. I really liked how Sarwat Nazir wrote the lines of each character in a way that’s left to the interpretation of the audience on how they want to perceive the character. How would you describe your character? My interpretation of Salma’s character is that she is a confident and strongheaded girl who comes from an affluent background. her life by her parents, she is accustomed to having things her way all the time. She gives herself a lot of importance and expects others to do the same. The minute Salma puts her eyes on anything she wants, she wants it right away, which makes her seem a bit erratic with her judgment. She’s the type of person who will not hesitate to express her reservations or concerns about any issue. If it bothers her, it has to be out there for people to know and it has to change immediately. Having been through a divorce earlier, she goes into every relationship headstrong and makes sure that her concerns are addressed right away. That being said she’s a pretty observant person and can pick up on cues of something that doesn’t feel right, but rather than waiting to bring things up at the right time and in the right way, she nips it in the bud and forces everyone to deal with it. How did Khaas challenge you as an actor? I had the challenge of figuring out how to play Salma differently from the other characters I have played before. When you are repeatedly cast for similar roles, you really have to figure out some interesting quirks in the personality of the character and create a unique backstory. I had to figure out whether to play a seemingly negative character completely black or white or to add some grey areas leaving it up to the audience’s perception. So I tried not to place any moral judgments on Salma’s character instead I tried to really understand why she was doing what she did, and find myself in her somewhere. When did you decide you wanted to pursue acting as a career? In my early teens I would spend my free time making funny videos with a new camcorder we got, playing different characters along with my sister Zara. We would show our parents and they’d show those videos to all our family

friends which was pretty embarrassing. I guess I never really thought much of it, until an opportunity to audition for a Pakistani drama, which was being shot in Texas, came along. I got a pretty important part, and it came by surprise because I didn’t actually go to audition. I was accompanying my brother who was reading lines and the director asked me to just mock the female character and read along with him. After that reading, the director offered me the girl’s role. Being part of such a big production with some of the leading names of the industry at such a young age, I guess I was fascinated and it sparked an interest. However I didn’t pursue acting professionally after that right away. But deep down inside I knew that after finishing my studies I would give acting a shot again. When I did finally start, one thing led to another and it became a full-time career. What is one trait of Salma in Khaas you wish to posess in real life? Her no BS attitude and being able to communicate exactly what’s on her mind without waiting for the right moment. How do you overcome challenges? In my experience challenges have always turned out to be some very important stepping-stones in my life. Sure when they come your way it’s human nature to worry. But once I’m done worrying and move on to the phase of overcoming the challenge, I tryy to think portunity about whether there is an opportunity hat I hidden somewhere within it that ’s can take advantage of. I feel it’s also very important to create a network of positive people. I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to share your vision and goals with genuine like-minded people who wish you well, and in your toughest times will be your pillar of strength and remind you to stay focused on your goals no matter what.
What gratifies you the most? Spending precious time with my beautiful daughter. Three things no one knows about you? 1. When I was a kid I was extremely flexible and I used to turn both my feet backwards and scare guests who were visiting us. I thought it was hilarious. 2. I made a sketch of Tupac Shakur for an Art contest in Junior High School in the US, and won first prize. A teacher wanted to buy it from me for $800 but I didn’t sell it to her. I wish I did though, because I have no idea where it is now. 3. I have a form of this condition called Synesthesia called OLP. I apply genders, colours and personalities to numbers and alphabets and even imagine relationships between them. I also have randomly triggered memories at completely unrelated times. It may sound pretty weird but quite a few people have this condition. What’s next for Hira Tareen? Well aside from new acting projects in the pipeline and some super fun videos that I have planned for my YouTube channel, I have been taking out a lot of time to think and formulate ideas. I am also planning to rebrand and launch my clothing brand again by 2020 as well as take part in some cause-based initiatives.
