WITH ALVEENA ABID

FASHION

The oh-so-charming publicist and fashionista, Alveena Abid shares her style secrets. From the silhouettes she loves to the styles she avoids, she decodes her style Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

OCTOBER 22-28 2017

46

How would you describe your body type? Athletic. Has your body type changed over the last five years? Yes! I would call it a drastic transformation. My metabolism and I don’t get along, so weight management has always been an issue. But over the past five years I have started eating clean and working out to help keep myself in shape. How has your style changed over the years? It hasn’t changed much as I have always kept it minimal. But yes, one thing that has changed for sure is that I have started following trends quite regularly but only the ones that suit me. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My legs. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I have always avoided bodyhugging silhouettes since I am very conscious about my curves. I usually pair my tops with palazzos and culottes. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Not dressing up according to their age. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? Flowy. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? One piece, hmm! There’s actually a very long list but I can’t wear anything that’s too revealing because I feel uncomfortable.

THE NOTEPAD Faraz Khan, social entrepreneur, investor, published author, public speaker, and CEO and co-founder of Seed Ventures jots down the six start-ups that are proving to be the most promising in the country Gizelle Communications

Seed

This was the first company that we invested in. This is probably the largest infrastructure media company in Pakistan that is going global right now. It’s promising because the business model is unique; we work on a public-private partnership basis with public sector authorities. We develop infrastructure with them and then sell it to the private sector. The reason why it’s unique is because people don’t like working hard these days and that’s the only thing this company has done. It’s picked up projects and products that everyone thought were too much work and offered too little money. In the end we put in the work and made a decent amount of money. It’s a true unicorn in the making!

Seed is a company we founded seven years back, and it works on three segments: first with microentrepreneurs, so thela walas, carpenters and cobblers, second with schools and third with universities. For these three segments we’re focusing on entrepreneurship, how to teach them entrepreneurship, how to incubate their ideas, how to finance their ideas and how to mentor these companies. Essentially we’re investing in three ecosystems. We started ahead of the market and people didn’t believe it would work. Right now we are amongst the top three companies in the whole country, that are in this field.

Stimulus

This is an events and activations company, which started three years back. In terms of turnover it’s become the fifth largest in the country. We do major events, launches and activations for major brands like Pepsi and Bank Al Falah. We create customer engagement points for the brand and also do their launches and events. The reason it’s successful is because we focus on innovation and entertainment with creative ways of connecting the stakeholders. I think that’s why this company has become a very successful, profitable company in a short span of time.

Stimulus focuses on the non-profit sector. When we started the company we told the non-profit and development sector that they need to bring sustainability and move away from donations, and instead offer products and services that will make their initiative successful. We were thrown out of their office, because ‘no one talks about business in charity’. Low and behold, the whole model shifted and now charity institutions are doing business to sustain themselves. In the last 10 years we’ve created a very strong brand in the development sector, as Stimulus is one of the top consultancies in the country at the moment.

DG9

Aerosync

This is a fairly new company, which started two years ago. It’s a digital company that provides social media solutions and develops mobile wallets for financial services. We’ve got major financial institutions working with us to develop mobile wallets. DG9 focuses on digital payments, grass root payments bringing financial literacy to the underprivileged market in our country.

Aerosync is a very interesting company! It’s a start-up that came to us for funding and we completely revamped it’s model. The idea of this company is to design products that improve the facilities of the underprivileged entrepreneurs, like thelas. So a conventional thela is four wheeled cart, and the new thela is solar powered, it can be pulled with a cycle or a motorcycle, it has a shelving mechanism that can work five things simultaneously, it has a digital paying system, essentially the new thela is sexy. There are four on the street at the moment!

One Piece, Three Ways WITH ZAINAB SALMAN While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas showing us how to put together an item from a designer’s collection, according to their own individual style and taste!

T

his white piece by Zainab Salman is a fun piece to have in your summer wardrobe. Adorned with pearls and crochet detailing, the piece can be worn casually or dressed up for more formal occasions. The lightweight white fabric is perfect for the summer heat and the sleeve detailing gives it character.. Here’s how three stylesavvy ladies styled the piece in their own unique way. OCTOBER 22-28 2017

62

Maham Lashari Owner Luxus Grand Hotel I love wearing different cuts and standing out from the crowd. I paired this pearl embellished shirt by Zainab Salman with an elegant sarong skirt. I teamed my ensemble with metallic gold Gianvito Rossi heels and kept the rest of my accessories to a minimum. I opted for a sleek blowout and minimal make-up but added a deep plum lip colour; making it perfect for a night out.

63

OCTOBER 22-28 2017

Mahrukh Majid Make-up Artist at The Make-up Room This piece is so quirky and fun! I paired the white top with my favourite denim to give it a casual chic look. I paired the ensemble with my statement pink Louboutins to add a pop of colour and would wear this outfit to a lunch or tea. The pearl embellishment on the top gives it a formal finish - which is perfect for me.

OCTOBER 22-28 2017

64

Amna Ahmer Dermatologist and Laser Specialist I love a classic look. I am all about simple, classic cuts which shape my body well. I paired this white Zainab Salman top with straight cigarette pants. I love the balloon sleeves which give the outfit a nice shape. I accessorised with simple pearl earrings and rings. To add a pop of colour to my outfit, I wore my Nadira shoes by Manolo Blahnik. I feel that white and emerald green always go well together.

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY

What’s your first memory of each other? Munischa: Amal imitating me like a parrot. Amal : I was in awe of her so I would follow everything she did. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Munischa: Too many to disclose. The list can go on and on! Amal: She’s my partner in crime so we have countless memories together but as children we sold posters in a park and unintentionally campaigned for a political leader. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Munischa: Almost everything! I was the eldest so my mum decided to punish me for most things that went wrong so the other two could follow suit. Mostly for talking in bed after 8:30 pm! Amal: Since I’m the youngest I used to get away with murder but Munischa was always the victim!

WITH AMAL AND MUNISCHA ASIF Sister duo Amal, Marketing Executive At Misha Lakhani and Munischa Asif, Senior Digital Artist at East River, talk sisterhood. From their childhood antics to how their brand came into being, these sisters share it all

If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? M u n i s c h a : There are a bunch of things that I would like to wear from her closet. Amal’s turned into a shopaholic so she definitely owns a lot more than me. For now, I’d totally like to steal her pink flamenco style maxi! Amal: I doubt I want to own anything from her closet. I always end up shopping for her! OCTOBER 22-28 2017

68

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Munischa: Gain some weight. Amal: Take some time off from work and pamper myself! What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Munischa: Her ability to laugh no matter what the situation. She keeps my inner child alive! Amal: Her innocence and the fact that I can rely on her for anything and everything. She spoils me rotten! If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up?? Munischa: I hug her tightly! Amal: I always have to break the ice; she waits for me to make the first move. What is the one secret talent your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Munischa: Recycling outfits. e’s Amal: She’s extremely calm and patient! Also, she’s a perfectionist- if she takes up a task she’ll put her heart and soul into it. Describe your sibling in three words: Munischa: Inventive, brave and original. Amal: Grounded, selfless and caring. Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Munischa: Muttley. Amal: Phoebe from Friends. How are your personalities similar? Munischa: We both make a conscious effort to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong. Our conscience drives us. We’ve always ole shared similar interests and that seems to be the sole reason why our fashion label ‘Amal and Munischa’ came into existence. It solidifies our bond as sisters and creative people who share a similar passion for fashion and design. Amal: We always love the same stuff. Our choice is very similar. Also, we know how to make each other happy! I can’t live without my brother/sister because… Munischa: She’s my extension, my soul twin and understands me when no one else does. She plays all possible roles that could ever exist in a person’s life. Amal: She’s my best friend almost like a second mother to me. I trust her with my life!

TOSS UP

WITH FAISAL KAPADIA

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would you say to them? Muhammad Ali the boxer was my hero as I grew up. I would like to meet him although he is not amongst us anymore and tell him how he inspired me to rise above the ordinary and to never give up no matter how much people put you down. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you take with you? My laptop, a satellite phone for WiFi and flip flops. What would be harder for you, to tell someone you love them or that you don’t love them back? Expression has never been an issue for me so neither of the above would be hard for me. What do you think would be the hardest thing for you to give up? Writing..I am predominantly a wordsmith so giving that up would be impossible. What makes you bored? Mediocrity of effort.

Faisal kapadia is a renowned Digital Strategist and CEO of Mind Map Communications, a 360 degree digital agency focused on creating disruption and virality through their campaigns. He is also a writer, blogger and commentator with a strong voice in the socio-economic and technology space in Pakistan

Are you old fashioned? Yes as these days believing in chivalry, honour and honesty is considered old fashioned, thus I am. Something or someone you miss the most from your childhood? The carefree abandon of not knowing what tomorrow holds.

OCTOBER 22-28 2017

76

Punctual or late? Early. If you could only have one of the following, which would you choose? : Trust or love? Trust because without that love or any positive emotion cannot exist. Tell us about your favourite book, magazine or comic? My favourite magazine is Popular Science and my favourite book is The Robots of Dawn by Isaac Asimov. Who is someone you envy? I envy someone who can abandon everything to just write and do nothing else in life. The worst punishment you received as a child? Not being able to read comic books when grades suffered was the worst. Name three things in nature you find most beautiful? Sunsets, waves at the beach and jungle waterfalls. Which are your two favourite careers and why? Digital strategy and diplomacy. The hardest thing you’ve ever had to do? Suffer through a spell of disability related to my eyes. When was the last time you lied and to whom and why? I don’t lie. Something you regret in life? Having had a chance to work with some top notch tech firms in their formative years I gave it up to come back to Pakistan. What scares you the most and why? The dark, again because of my experience with eye-related disability. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? Marco Polo.

77

OCTOBER 22-28 2017

What’s the best and worst part of your job? The best thing about what I do is that I get to deal with cutting edge stuff in the digital field and experiment on it to realise how it has impact in the local landscape. The worst thing is when people don’t understand that we digital strategists have to sleep as well. Who is your favourite client? My favourite client is someone who trusts me to do what they have hired me to do.

WITH MEHEK SAEED Style Editor at Grazia Pakistan and fashion journalist, Mehek Saeed, takes us through her busy schedule

8am: I’ve been waking up at this hour for the past few months. Sometimes, I roll out of bed and start my day or roll over and go back to sleep (entirely depending on stress levels).

9am I wake up again. I’m not ashamed to admit that the first thing I reach for is my phone and I usually check three to four apps before I get up – Mail, Instagram, and WhatsApp – sometimes Snapchat.

10am: I work from home so I make it a point to try and shower and get dressed for the day by this time. But the first thing I do before anything else is make coffee. I need coffee to function!

12pm: For days when we have shoots

OCTOBER 22-28 2017

78

for Grazia I sort out the clothes and style the looks. On non-shoot days, I would begin my day by reading the news. I like knowing and reading about all things culture, current events, and entertainment from my favourite local and foreign publications. I check Instep, Images Dawn, The Business of Fashion, Who What Wear and ManRepeller regularly.

1pm: I have numerous PR queries in my mail and on Whatsapp. I check them and send out my replies. I also make my calls around this time to check in with people and get the scoop for my stories. 1 pm is my deadline for the newspaper so if I’m filing a story on the day it should be done by then.

2pm: I have lunch – at home if it’s a non-shoot day or I grab something to go from Mall One.

3pm: I put together a fashion feature for Grazia which entails trawling through hundreds of celebrity, street style, runway, and Instagram images and looking at a lot of websites and products. Send. Done.

5pm: There is most likely an event at this hour so I put together my outfit. I prefer to do casual chic over very dressed up so this normally doesn’t take too much time.

8pm: I don’t do fashionably late and always arrive to events on time. If I’m not there on time, I’m most likely not coming. If there are no events happening at night, I usually see my friends for a catch-up dinner or hang with family. Otherwise, I’ll stay in and find something on Netflix or watch GOT on repeat.

11pm: If I’m out and in the company of really great people with good energy, I’ll make an exception and stay for a while, considering 11 pm is my usual bedtime. Once home, my nighttime beauty routine commences and then Zzzz.

We can’t think of a better face and personality for an international brand like L’Oréal!

Sajal Aly makes her singing debut! Sajal Aly, the Mom starlet has been making headlines yet again with two of her recent serials, O Rangreza and Yaqeen Ka Safar. While there is no doubt the actor possesses ace acting skills, what we didn’t know was that Sajal is just as gifted, a singer. And now her secret’s finally out. The actor sang a rendition for her latest show O Rangreza which also features rising star Bilal Abbas Khan, and to be honest, it’s surpassed our expectations. The star surprised us with her melodious vocals and we’re hoping she delves further into singing. The acoustic rendition of the song is soulful and would most certainly make you a fan.
