WITH FIZZA FURQAN

FASHION ION

Creative Fashion Head at Daraz and freelance photoshoot and celebrity stylist, Fizza Furqan spills her style secrets. From her w favourite silhouettes to how er her style has evolved over the years, she shares it all Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they y work their anatomies to their advantage advantag ge ge

How would you describe your body type? I would describe myself to have a tall, slim yet curvy body type - perhaps an hourglass figure. Has your body type changed over the last 5 years? I take my fitness regime quite seriously so I suppose there have been ample changes in my body type - for the better. It’s not been easy but i’d like to think I’ve done a decent job maintaining it and improving it with each day. Cutting out fries is the hardest part! How has your style changed over the years? I’ve always been pretty up-to-date with fashion d trends and while I wouldn’t say I’m open to any and every new trend, I would say the that I have definitely become a lot more experimental now than ever before. Since part of my job is to style celebrities, it kind of helps me customise new fashion trends to always remain consistent with my personal style statement - though I’m not one to blindly follow fashion trends because they’re “trending”. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? My hips tend to gain weight faster than any other part of my body. How do you dress your body according to your body type? For everyday wear, I love my standard attire which is a baggy-fit button down paired with perfectly fitted jeans. Otherwise I like to wear outfits that accentuate my waist and have a long hem-line. Thankfully I’m

tall and have a pretty sk skinny waist so dresses, cculottes, pants, long sskirts, high waisted lowe ers and anything belted w works for me. In your opinion what is tthe biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Blindly following trends while paying zero attention to their personal style, body type and most importantly, their individuality. Style should always be personal. People tend to either wear too much or too little - moderation is key! Ive always been of the opinion that every trend is not to be followed, so pick wisely and just be yourself. Remember, you wear the clothes, the clothes shouldn’t be wearing you! Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I have long legs and a slim waist so for my body type, jumpsuits, long/midi sheath dresses and flared high-waisted pants are all great. What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why? I’m not sure there is one. Maybe harem pants - worst piece of clothing ever created!

Kayseria’s winter collection, Magic in Print, comprises dark winter hues, exquisite prints and feminine charm. The use of rustic tones, blues, magentas and black are used throughout the designs to give you an updated look and a joyful encounter with winter. Celebrate the pride and charm of your femininity and enhance your look this season. Bonjour!

Mahwash Bhimjee COO Triumph I’m all about slogan tees these days and I love this one by HeF Clothing. The message is a strong one and the t-shirt itself is super cool. I paired the tee with black tights and white Nike runners and added a bright red pout to add some colour to the monochrome look. I kept my hair in natural waves and would wear this look to the beach or casually around the city.

Iat Ibrahim Ecommerce Manager I wanted to keep my look casual, so I paired this HeF tee with a pair of jeans and white Adidas kicks. I love that this tee is perfect for a hot day in the city. I kept my accessories to a minimum and would wear this outfit to the beach or for a casual day out.

BEAUTY

THE NOTEPAD The brains behind skincare brand Aura, Fatima Khan shares seven simple skincare tips to maintain a healthy, natural glow with Aura’s 100% natural skin care products Start fresh! There’s nothing like getting a good night’s sleep! That’s when your body recovers, allowing you to look and feel energised for the next day. Wash your face with any of Aura’s 100% natural soap bars for an instant pick-me-up! Products I highly recommend are the Activated Charcoal Bar for oilycombination skin and the Goat Milk Bar for dry skin, babies, and people suffering from psoriasis, eczema or rosacea.

Go to sleep bare faced! The worst thing you can do to your skin is to block your pores. That’s what happens when you don’t remove your make-up before going to bed. Blocked pores can cause pimples, skin rashes, dark spots and even accelerate the process of aging! Aura’s Blackhead Buster Peel-Off Mask is your best friend! This dark as night mask removes grime, controls excess oil, and fights blackheads and whiteheads without irritating the skin.

Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise! It doesn’t matter whether you have oily, combination or dry skin. Every skin type needs hydration to maintain skin elasticity and fight sun damage. Aura offers two face oils, revive and restore that can be used in place of a night moisturiser, day cream and even a make-up primer!

Healthy skin is a lifestyle Taking care of your body goes beyond a natural skincare regime. The key to good skin health is good general health, and while there are some things you cannot control (such as medical conditions), you can choose a healthy lifestyle which involves eating on time, eating healthy, drinking a lot of water, exercising and also tapping into your mental health. Yoga is an excellent mix of physical and mental activity that improves blood circulation, relieves stress and boosts the immune system. Tried and tested!

Don’t forget the rest of your body! Moisturise your body daily and protect it from oxidative stress, which causes spots, dullness and dryness. Our Moroccan Argan Oil is a multi-tasking 100% pure cold-pressed oil which provides instant hydration, soothes cracked heels, treats split ends and lightens stretch marks.

Let your hair breathe Give your hair a break from constant over-heating and chemical use. Hair is precious and needs a lot of nutrients to stay strong and healthy, so on your day off, simply oil your hair with nourishing natural ingredients! Aura’s 100% natural Hair Rescue Strengthening Oil uses 10 locally selected herbs to support long-term hair fall, control hair fall, promote hair growth and leave the hair looking like a million bucks!

Love the skin you’re in This isn’t a skincare tip, it’s just a quick reminder to everyone out there who doesn’t feel comfortable in their own skin, to love your body just the way it is! Aura does not promote or sell any fairness and whitening products because at Aura, we celebrate all shades of beauty. I believe the obsession with being light skinned in Pakistan has manifested into a form of bullying, impacting young children and adults who feel the constant need to become fairer, in hopes of looking more beautiful — but beauty has no colour honestly! I believe it is our responsibility as an ethical skincare brand to help shatter these standards of beauty and promote the love for natural beauty — dark, tan or fair! OCTOBER 8-14 2017

What’s your first memory of each other? Ayesha: Sam has always stood up for and protected me and that’s one of my earliest memories. Samira: My first memory is when we were in nursery and Ayesha was being bullied by two boys, I stepped in and beat them up. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Ayesha: So many, but the most traumatising was when she asked me to stuff pomegranate up my nose saying it’ll be fun. It really wasn’t! 911, it was. Samira: Jumping off the roof of the patio onto the garden at the age of five. What did you get punished for the most as a child? Ayesha: I rarely got punished but if I did, I’d run straight to our mother’s expensive vase and put my finger on it pretending to topple it if she came any closer. Of course, one day I did tip it over. A well-deserved whack it was! Samira: Swinging off curtains always got me into trouble.

INTERVIEW

OCTOBER 8-14 2017

62

How did you become a stylist? It just happened. All my academic life I figured that I’m not someone who could sit and work inside the box. For me, it was not just one element but the entire picture. Luckily my first job turned out to be a stylist’s job and it’s been almost 12 years that I’ve been working in this field. How do you stay updated on current trends? Mostly through Instagram, magazines, lots of culture and history books. My style is very different; I was inspired from different styles and now I’ve formed my own signature style. I love following Japanese people as I feel they’re very organic. I also like the 70s and 60s eras. I like to mix and match – it’s a challenge to mix different cultures together with today’s trends. I guess that’s why I enjoy Coke Studio as the show does the same with music. How important is it for an artist to have a style statement on ‘Coke Studio’? In our society, people think a style statement has to be something out of the box but that is really not the case: it can be something really simple as well. Ali Noor, for example, wears a basic shalwar kameez with a printed shawl with short hair and that became a style statement. Style statement doesn’t necessarily mean designer-wear or branded, even a simple muslin kurta can make a statement. One should be in their comfort zone while making sure what is in rhythm with their music. Your style should look effortless. How important is the communication between you and artists? It’s very important! I feel that audio and visual go hand in hand and so it’s important to pay attention to the look and style. For this season, Ali Sethi’s song is a tribute to Mehdi sahab. Ali sang Ranjish hi Sahi which is an iconic ghazal but it’s old and sad. People

63

OCTOBER 8-14 2017

probably expected Ali to look sombre and most likely did not expect his shimmery and vibrant look. But then I ask ‘why not?’ I think Ali carried it off quite well! Has there ever been a conflict where you thought something else and the artists didn’t agree? Most of my work is all pre-planned. By now, celebrities have seen my work and they trust me as a stylist. And sometimes even if there is conflict, we talk it out and make things work. A little conflict is healthy; it means people take interest in their looks. How important do you think it is for a show like Coke Studio to have a stylist? If you review seasons seven to 10, that’ll give you a very clear answer as to how important stylists are. There’s been a variety of costumes, a certain uniformity to match the feel of the show, and lots of creativity remaining within that feel. It also gives people — audiences, bloggers, the press — many things to talk about. I would say that’s a job well done! (laughs) Can you make out someone’s personality with the way they dress? I don’t judge people usually but of course, the way you’re dressed does give an impression of who you are. Or maybe it’s just me thinking too much because it’s my profession. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re a celebrity or not, your style always leaves an impression on whoever you meet. Three must-haves in your styling kit? Face wash, a nail cutter and safety pins. Any special moment on the sets of Coke Studio that you would like to share? It’s been a great journey for me. Every single song I’m a part of is a special memory. Coke Studio feels like family now.
