Cancer Facts • The average age of a woman diagnosed with breast cancer is 62 • The average age of a woman who dies from breast cancer is 68 • Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women between age 55 and 64 • About 10% of breast cancers occur in women younger than 45
Breast cancer has been the cause of despair and loss for many and so October; Breast Cancer Awareness Month offers a reason to celebrate and to reflect. In the pink month of the year, an annual international health campaign organised by major breast cancer charities is initiated to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research on its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Survival rates continue to climb due to early detection, better screening, increased awareness, and new treatment options that help detect cancer when it is most treatable.
Breast cancer symptoms • A lump, mass and change in the feel or position of the breast are among the most common symptoms of breast cancer. Other symptoms include: • Swelling, redness or inflammation • Changes in the nipple • Nipple discharge • Pain in the breast • Itchy or irritated breasts • Changes in colour • Peeling or flaky skin • Sharing our journey with others reminds us we’re not alone
Seemi Farid Survivor I was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after my husband’s demise and I was devastated. I was told the trigger being stress. I could choose to mope about it or beat it. I decided on the latter. My children were the pillar of strength at this time. I had my mastectomy done. Then my treatment at Shaukat Khanum Hospital began. I had told my kids “I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t want to know the extent of my disease, I want to beat it and recover! Just follow what the doctor says and i’ll do as told”. It wasn’t easy, eight cycles of chemo, radiation and 12 cycles of herceptin (cancer prevention treatment drug) I am cancer-free now Alhamdulillah for nine years. My advice to anyone who is diagnosed with breast cancer is “keep a positive attitude and outlook to the disease and you will win half of the battle! Do not let it get the better of you!”

Natasha Rana Survivor I was diagnosed with breast cancer two days after my 40th birthday. I was visiting my brother and his family in Bangkok when my daughter identified a very small dimple on my breast. Went to the hospital for a mammogram where I was told I had stage two breast cancer. I had surgery there and then came back to Pakistan to Shaukat Khanum Hospital where I got six rounds of chemo which was absolute hell and then six weeks of radiation every day. My treatment finished about two and half years ago. Cancer is tough but I’m tougher, that was the attitude that kept me alive. I’m still on medication for life but I have never appreciated life more and for that I am thankful to my cancer.
A Amber Liaqat C Caregiver It was one of the most difficult times of our lives together as a family. M mother was the centre of our universe. She was strong and My h healthy so being diagnosed with cancer came as a shock to us. But w had hope as it was stage 1 and we were told that breast cancer we is the most curable form of cancer. After a full year of treatment which included eight cycles of chemotherapy, thirty radiations and mastectomy, my mother was finall declared cancer-free. We celebrated with a trip to Europe. On our return, she had developed cough, which we assumed was due to fatigue from the long journey since her immunity was very low but the cough aggravated. We went back to Shaukat Khanum only to find out that her cancer had rapidly spread to her lungs, liver and brain. Doctors suggested we should go with another round of chemotherapy but before we could start another round of treatment, it was too late and my mother lost the battle. As a caregiver, seeing my mother fight cancer like a soldier, losing her beautiful hair, chemotherapy’s side affects which made her so weak that she could barely concentrate and in the end lost her life was the biggest tragedy. But I would advise all those caregivers and families to offer all the support, comfort and most importantly encouragement to cancer patients in their battle against cancer and help them celebrate the little steps on the long and slow road back to recovery.
